Wataru × Saeki
Saeki × Wataru

I am constantly blabbering names since I completed the book. I am in love with the art , the characters , story , dialogues , everything. If this author write anything new I will be first in line to grab a new copy.

I LOVE THIS SOO MUCH!!🌈❤

So what's it about?

A hot-headed, movie geek, struggling high schooler, sweet like sugar , awkward as hell boy and a A grader, also a movie geek, hot , loving boy spends there summer exploring their fav movie location and discovering their love for each other.

Did you like the formula I mentioned? If your answer is yes, you’re accepted to the full, heartfelt, sweet-swoon-soft, enjoyed ride!

"For me Wataru you are always the part of bright blue summer"

Please make a movie/series out of it like now , this deserves it.

This feels like summer / Boy, you make me feel so alive / Just be my lover / Boy, you'll lead me to paradise (Get You – Daniel Caesar feat. Kali Uchis).

Somewhere along the way, writers around the world must have realized that the best gay love stories always take place during the summer, and that’s pretty cool. Ari & Dante, The Language of Seabirds, or even The Summer of ‘85, something about those few couple of months imbues people the intense urge to write the most nostalgia fueled and achingly sweet love stories out there. I guess we can now add My Summer of You to the list. See? Even the titles all fit together nicely! Haha! Yeah, I’ve got to say… this one is for the yearners, so don’t mind me, I’m just getting a little emotional right now. You win My Summer of You, you got me! I think it’s the way stories about summer love almost always start out as easy-breezy as can be, but without fail, end up leaving me hopelessly unmoored. You know that strange Doctor Strange power where he pushes people outside of their own body and they become, like, astral projected ghosts of themselves? If you can imagine that, then you know what this manga did to me. Anyway, the basic story here is that a popular guy named Chiharu and a not-so-popular guy named Wataru become unlikely friends, bonding through their shared love of movies. It was funny to read along as Wataru’s inner monologue is constantly going on and on about how much of a "hot guy" Chiharu is, and at first he says it in a “dude bro” kind of way, but then it turns into a term of genuine attraction. Anyway, this is a classic “the hot guy falls first” story in manga (my favorite!), and because Wataru’s clueless as hell, Chiharu then decides to take him on a pilgrimage of sorts to go to all the filming locations of their favorite movie, with the intention to finally confess his feelings. It’s sweet and nice, but if this in any shape and form sounds somewhat familiar, that’s because other than a few tweaks here and there, this premise basically has the same bones as all of these gay manga I’ve been reading. Even down to the hair color of the main characters. But, that’s not such a terrible thing, is it? Just because you walk down all the usual paths doesn’t mean you won’t see something beautiful along the way. Something new you didn't notice before.

Besides, I've always hoped I’d see the day where LGBT+ stories grow in such abundance that it gets to the point where you can point out and predict all the tropes you’re probably going to see. I don't know if we're quite there yet, but it's a nice thought regardless. Otherwise, even though the manga didn’t really get too into the whole “film bro” aspects, I do still enjoy reading about characters with specific passions and special interests. And sure, saying “I love movies” is one of the most common things a person could say when talking about what they’re into, but I still think it's a nice theme to center the story around. Maybe I'm just basic, but I like movies, and I enjoy stories about people who like the things that I like! I like to think that this story finds a sweet spot between interest and pretentiousness, and while I don't mind reading about pretentious art lovers as much as a lot of other folks do, I can understand why waxing poetic about cinema might not be the most interesting thing to most people. Conversely, I’d much rather read a story about movie buffs over music snobs because… as a resident music snob, whenever a character in a movie or a book or manga will say something overly opinionated about music, I’ll almost always have something to say about it. It always takes me out, you know? Remember that scene in La La Land where Ryan Gosling explains what jazz is to Emma Stone? I’m sure you do because I mention it in every other review I write. And you could probably tell that it might have made the movie worse for me because it still makes me roll my eyes to this day! While with movies, I like them well enough, it’s true, but if someone comes at me with an intense opinion about them, I usually just smile and nod, polite-style. Also, not to be shallow, but the characters being gay will literally elevate any kind of story for me. I mean, if someone out there wants to make a queer version of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, I won't be mad. In fact, I’ll sure as hell be seated! Anyway, I really enjoyed this. The movie thing was great, the forlorn summer yearning thing was great, and… oh yeah, the gay thing was pretty great too.

This manga had NO RIGHT being this cute 🥹😭 I absolutely adore these two so much!!!! This was so heartwarming and as a film lover, I felt so connected to these characters and their shared passion for film. Saeki is also one of the SOFTEST characters I’ve ever read about and I absolutely adored him. I can’t wait to read more of them in the future. 😭💗

A sweet read, quite fitting for the summer, of two schoolboys finding each other. Maybe a bit generic and neat within the boundaries of the genre, but sometimes that is satisfying enough
You can’t just go turning a person into a memory!

In The Summer of You we follow Wataru Toda and “hot guy” Chiharu Saeki, who coincidentally is also a bit aloof and very outspokenly romantic towards Wataru.
He also has an unintentional sarcastic streak, for instance responding to the main character in the following manner:
Why… me?
Good question.

Movies bond them together and lead to some real banter, and at least not the “boom, now I am in love with you” approach many other manga in the genre seem to take.
The drama at 50%, and the coincidence involved are very much fairytale like.

The whole approach to the relationship from Wataru his side could be framed as kind of gay-baiting, but overal the story and art style work fine enough and the humor is enjoyable, if not alway intentional:
I just never managed to get into them - well now, that’s an interesting thing to say about one’s exes….

I want to read the sequel, so a solid enough three stars despite some critiques as included above.

This was such an adorable manga that is perfect for passing time. Adorable and short with no drama involved and make you think of realistic college love. After all not all of us have the incidents happening every ten seconds. A art was pretty good too but unfortunately this is not the type that will stay with you for a while though.

I'm not sure where I found the recommendation to read this manga. It could have been from my library's website, but once I read the description I knew that it was a title I wanted to check out. The Summer of You focuses on two high school boys who find themselves falling for each other after a summer together. While the drama played out a little too perfectly in some areas, I really found this to be sweet and endearing. There was one specific issue that I did take with the story (I won't reveal it here due to spoilers); however, it may not necessarily have been a correlation that Furuya was attempting to make. I enjoyed the art; however, there were moments within the text where the text bubbles were slightly difficult to associate with characters. I couldn't always figure out who was speaking unless it was based on the context of the conversation. The story definitely wraps up in a convenient way, but I liked it and it worked for the story. I will be continuing on with the next volume.

❝For me, Wataru, you were always a part of a bright blue summer.❞

✧ an aspect i really loved about this story was how, even though Saeki confessed to Wataru at the end of ch 1, that was all he wanted: to let Wataru be aware of how he felt about him, but he never forced Wataru to reciprocate those feelings so i'm glad we were able to see Wataru's feelings slowly develop rather than be rushed and saying i love you back to Saeki just bc he confessed.
✧ i loved their confession scenes (Saeki in the beginning and Wataru towards the end)!! the way they had done it was SO who they were as a character and it was the cutest. 🥺
✧ i love how seeing the person who likes you with someone else can cause you to realize that, maybe, you might reciprocate those feelings back? 🤣 or at least, start questioning everything, lmao.
✧ this was originally going to be four stars for me, but the final chapter had me on a chokehold from all the emotions i didn't expect to feel in a manga with only 5 chapters that i couldn't help but give it five stars overall.
✧ thank god there's a sequel bc i need!! to see more cute moments of these two as a couple, thank you. <3

“to me…you will always be part of my summer.”

The Summer of You will definitely appeal to fans of shounen-ai like Seven Says. I, however, found it rather generic and clichéd.
As the title itself suggests The Summer of You is very much a light summer romance. The manga follows Chiharu and Wataru, two boys who attend the same high school and find themselves bonding over their shared love for film. When Chiharu confesses that he’s in love with Wataru, and while the latter is surprised and confused he claims that this won’t affect their friendship. During summer break they embark on various day trips to see various filming locations from some of their favourite films. During this time, you guessed it, Wataru starts questioning his feelings for Chiharu…
This is a very mellow shounen-ai that makes for easy reading. While I wasn’t all that taken by the mangaka’s art style (something about the faces didn’t vibe with moi) I’m sure many other readers will fall in love with it. I liked the slow-burn friends-to-lovers dynamic between Wataru and Chiharu; however, I could have done without the ‘past meeting’ storyline. It was obvious and rather contrived.
All in all, The Summer of You was a more than decent read and I’m sure that will appeal to ardent shounen-ai fans.

Last chapter aside, this is probably the most realistic manga I've ever read.
I've been in a situation like that (except she didn't leave and we still "friends") and God I wish I had the guts to punch and say "fuck you" the way Wataru does. Confessing like that and expecting an answer straight away or deciding all by yourself is so unfair. I got so angry when Saeki said "thank you", I knew he was gonna leave cause that's how manga works but when Wataru found him and punched him and screamed at him I almost cried because that's how I've been feeling for a long time. This story resonated with me so much.

This was such a breath of fresh air.
A sweet story of friends to lovers but done in a way that I don't think I've ever experienced in this genre.
If I'm to be considered well-read in any handful of areas, you can bet Yaoi Manga is on that list - and somehow, I've never encountered a story so removed from the usual toxicity I've come to expect in the beginning of these types of stories - though is super PG.

This first volume ensured that I'll be coming back for next one.

This was really cute.

As much as I love reading smutty books, nothing beats the sweetness of books/mangas about first loves ❤

I really liked this first book of the series and will be hopping straight into volume #2 next. This gave me a Tripping Over You vibe, with Saeki being direct about his feelings in the first chapter and Wataru being completely thrown off balance by the unexpected declaration. At times, I thought Saeki came on a little strong for someone who claimed to be okay with them remaining just friends, but his sudden bursts of affection and emotion were later explained and I definitely didn't see that coming. The end was very much a beginning and I can't wait to see what happens between these two next. I think Saeki needs some serious snuggles. And maybe Wataru will finally start calling him Chiharu?

I really liked this one!! A great YA m/m romance manga about two tweens who embark on a film pilgrimage during the summer.

This volume is thick and has so much bonus extras that I was like !!! Like seriously it's a great volume/edition. I can't wait to read the sequels because I totally need more of these two. They're so adorable.

This gave me such a sense of nostalgia for endless summer days!

Wataru and Saeki are unlikely friends, brought together by their love of movies. Wataru is handsome and popular, and yet he refuses to go out with anyone. One evening, he confesses to Wataru that it's because he has a crush on him. Wataru takes the news well, though he is dumbfounded. Why him? But the boys continue to be friends and make plans for the summer: they will visit important locations from one of Saeki's favourite films. And maybe some things will change between them too.

I loved that Wataru didn't freak out when Saeki confessed. Also really thankful that the manga let their friendship blossom organically, it was so nice following them on their trips. The angsty part got me good, and I loved the ending. I don't know, it just had something of that summer holiday magic.

The was a pretty solid volume. It was very cute summer read to pass time. It didn't have much conflict or drama which is nice. The only thing is that it isn't something that will stick with you for very long.

Overall I would recommend if you want a sweet mlm friends to lovers manga.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Reread, cuz I realized I never read #2, still great! :)

Very cute high school romance. Rated G. "Plain" guy and the hot guy. They like movies. The "you don't remember but" part seemed a bit farfetched, (what's that trope called? it surely has a name) but otherwise a very believable contemporary story. It kind of mostly resolves, I thought it was a one shot, but there's a second volume coming in July which I've pre-ordered.

Hola lectores!

Hang on, my old review was lost! Augh, I forgot how I reviewed it back then and I wanted to run over it again at least before going on my new review. But anyway, my feelings are the same (I guess). It's still the best Shounen Ai that I have read. It give me the right amount of fluff and angst, it's a solid take on that. I just adore it so much. I love just how Nagisa reach out to you and shove in your mouth the beauty of simplest things. I'm really quite full of love right now.

Reading it in the second time, the scenes are still pretty etched in my mind despite reading a bunch the past couple of weeks. It still gives me that emotions I felt reading it the first time. I love how it just tugs at your heart's every beat. It's just so pure and wholesome. I love it so much.
