Avoiding Temptation

I hit on her first.

Realized she was my best friend Finn's little sister second.

And got a bloody nose third — compliments of Finn after he watched me nearly score with the new underclassman.

After all I did have a reputation on campus, word on the street was that a girl could orgasm within one minute just watching me eat Lucky Charms.
You can't make this stuff up — even though it was at least four minutes and included outside circumstances. Ahem, I digress.

Point is, not only did I earn the attention of the worst sort of girl for me — my best friend's only sibling — but now she's out to seduce me.

Me! One of the most famous Pleasure Ponies of them all!

I can't shower — she follows me to the bathroom. Literally.
I can't sleep — Lucky me, she lives in the same dorm.

And I can't focus on anything except for her taunting eyes every single time something goes her way.

I want her, but I don't want her to know I want her, and I definitely don't want to die before graduation, which is looking more and more likely considering we can't keep our hands off each other.

Something's gotta give, and I have an inkling I should probably start writing my eulogy now because that something is probably going to be me.

So I am in a book slump. And it's entirely Covid's fault and to be honest all I want to do is get lost in a book but I literally spend days looking on GoodReads, stalking authors on FaceBook (you know in the non creepy way) and I just can never settle on a book to read. I have ARC's I'm SUPER excited to read that I'm scared to start because I don't want my distraction to taint the words so I just stare longingly at them.

Anyway I decided to just read one of the KU books I had been wanting to read that I had downloaded in January and just dive in. And it kind of worked but then it also kind of didn't. So I don't really know what to say, other than read other reviews if your unsure if this is the right book for you because my brain is fog.

3.5 STARS ✰

Recently, I just read four books that all were focused on heavy topics so I wanted a break from those type of reads and wanted something light and easy to read.

May 2021 2x attempt: Finished in 2 days // 3.5 stars
Originally in 2019: It was a 'not the book, but me' situation // DNF at 30%

Avoiding Temptation is a spinoff novel of Wingmen Inc. Specifically, this novel is in Rachel Van Dyken's A Bro Code series which is a series of interconnected standalones. This 16 chapter + epilogue book is spoken in dual perspective - Tatum & Slater POVs.

This novella includes. . .
✓ Best friend's sister & forced proximity tropes
✓ Cocky and witty hero
✓ RomCom Fun that includes lighthearted banter

STORY PLOT

Tatum (h) recently transferred to the college her brother is attending to escape from the shit storm her ex left for her at her previous school. Unknowingly to Finn (Tatum's older brother) and Slater (H), she moves in with them which is the worse thing to happen for Slater as he is very much attracted to the off-limits little sister - Tatum. But how much self-control does Slater have to stay away from her? Answer: very little.

Why did I rate it 3.5 stars?

This book is fast paced and on the shorter side for a novel being just shy of 170 pages. The biggest problem I had with this book was that RVD tried to incorporate heavier triggering topics like a parent divorce, cyberbullying, and accidental OD leading to death. She introduced these heavy topics as part of the MC stories, then glossed over them. Basically, they are mentioned as tolling on the character for 5-6 pages in a specific chapter, then it is back to full on funny banter and lighthearted conversations. I felt that if they were going to be introduced that they should of been explored more to further develop the characters backstories.

═════════════════════════════
FINAL VERDICT ON BOOK
═════════════════════════════

Overall, it was a decent read that hit what I was looking for in a book.

Steam factor: low. There was a lot of sexual tension but the actual act was almost always interrupted by someone, specifically, Finn. Sure, those moments were funny but I was hoping with all the tension we would get a sweet moment since Tatum had bad experiences in the past.

Recommend: Yes, if you are looking for a light read!

Secondary Characters: LOVED. I liked how RVD brought characters from other worlds into this novel like Jake & Char Lynn (The Wager - The Bet series) and of course nutty Nadine Titus (Grandma present in The Bet series) In this book, Nadine is the aunt to Finn and Tatum but that doesn't' make her any less the batty matchmaking women. She is a force to be reckon with!

Character + Relationship Development: alright. I felt there was a chance for them to be developed past being superficial but it sorta fell flat. I enjoyed the characters for their funny banter but the connection was seen physical > emotional on several occasions.

I LOVE THIS WORLD!!!

This.Frikkin.Story. It is everything you want to read in an emotional romantic comedy. It wasn’t slap-stick funny, but man did it have depth of humor. It was real! It wasn’t silly. It was relatable! It was just plain fun!

The chemistry between Slater and Tatum was beyond sparking, sexually and verbal! They sparred just as good between the sheets than out of them.

Another best couple of hours I’ve spent reading in a while story! I can’t wait to devour more!

REVIEW: 3.75 stars—AVOIDING TEMPTATION is the third instalment in Rachel Van Dyken’s contemporary, adult BRO CODE erotic, romance series focusing on four friends known as the Pleasure Ponies who work for Wingman Inc: Knox, Finn, Leo, and Slater. This is Slater and Tatum’s story line. AVOIDING TEMPTATION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. The Bro Code is a spin off from the author’s Wingman, Inc series.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Slater and Tatum) AVOIDING TEMPTATION follows the best friends’s little sister relationship between Finn’s sister and sophomore Tatum, and Pleasure Pony Slater. Tatum has transferred schools following the fall-out of a relationship that spiralled out of control. Hoping to start anew, Tatum recognized her brother’s best friend Slater, and proceeded to try and seduce our story line hero but all does not go according to plan when Finn walks in on Slater and Tatum, threatening Slater within inches of his life. When Finn and Tatum’s family life begins to split and fall apart, Finn heads home, leaving Tatum and Slater to dance around the palpable sexual attraction between one another. What ensues is the quick building romance and relationship between Tatum and Slater, and the potential fall-out when Finn calls foul on the unwritten bro-code between best friends and brothers.

The relationship between Slater and Tatum is one of immediate attraction but Slater is unaware of Tatum’s connection to his best friend Finn. It quickly becomes apparent that Tatum will become a permanent fixture in the best friend’s residence, a position that places Tatum and Finn within feet of one another. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. There is plenty of back and forth texting between our story line couple, texting of which Slater is completely unaware.

We are reintroduced to Pleasure Ponies Finn, and Leo Blackwood, as well as Leo’s fiancée Kora Robinson, and Finn and Tatum’s colorful and eccentric ninety two year old Aunt Nadine.

AVOIDING TEMPTATION is a fun and flirty story line with a little bit of drama and conflict. The premise is captivating and engaging; the romance is sweet and seductive; the characters are energetic and charismatic. I am looking forward to Finn’s story.

Avoiding Temptation definitely lives up to its title!!!! And then some!
The sizzling chemistry between the characters was off the charts and the banter was so flipping good, I found myself laughing ALOT!!!!
This story was intriguing, steamy, emotional but also had some really beautiful words that really struck a chord with me.
Slater is the ultimate book boyfriend. He's incredibly charming, goes after what he wants and has a wicked sense of humour. He does struggle with self control especially when it comes to his new roommate!!!
This book was an absolute pleasure to read and I'm extremely excited for Finn's story!!!

My Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Admittedly, I have had such a love/hate relationship with this series.

And while this one wasn't bad by any means, I just couldn't take these two seriously because of some major sexual happenings too early on. To be fair, they don't actually go all the way, but things happened that I feel would have been better off happening later in the story. Once we got to see them interact with each other more. And while yes, I can see where those moments would add to the guilt and the tension between them, for me, it just didn't work. It made their entire relationship seem cheap.

Now aside from that? I enjoyed the rest of this novel. I adored the tension between Slater and Tatum, the way they tried to be friends, the way they tried to adhere to Finn's strict hands-off policy. I liked the way Kora and Leo made an appearance (even more so because I immediately understood what they were up to). And I LOVED seeing Grandma Nadine in all her glory (also there is definitely something to be said for how the author brings back old familiar faces from other novels).

I definitely think this novel is going to entertain a lot of people, and those little things that annoyed me will probably not bother others. I would read more from this author, and I can't wait to finish out this series with Finn's book (as I have a feeling it's going to be amazing considering what he put poor Slater through).

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Avoiding Temptation is a definite must read. It is the third book in the Bro Code series written by Rachel Van Dyken and I have to admit it’s my favourite to date.

Slater is one of the ‘Pleasure Ponies’ that help and comfort ladies who are in need of some support whilst studying at the college they all attend. The rule is that they must not enter into any type of relationship with the ladies accessing their services and as you can imagine, dating a sister is a definite no go also.

I adore Slater. In my opinion he’s the most sensitive and caring of the Pleasure Ponies, and to top his fabulous personality he appears to be the full package due to his looks and great physique too. I think Tatum is a fabulous young lady. She is Finn’s sister and transfers to the guy’s college after some bad experiences at her former place of study.
The chemistry between Slater and Tatum is off the charts and I loved the situations that they often found themselves in. I loved the banter and chat among all the characters in the book. There were many ‘laugh out loud’ moments that awarded me some strange looks from those around me as I read.

I can recommend this book for you to read without a second thought. I am now left waiting impatiently for the next book to be released which is titled The Setup, but thankfully is coming very soon!

Avoiding Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken is book Three in A Bro Code standalone Series. This is the story of Slater and Tatum. I have read the previous books which did add to my enjoyment of this one but you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Slater makes a fatal mistake when he hits on Tatum who turns out to be his best friend Finn's sister. Of course he puts the breaks on doing anything more with her but Tatum has other thoughts. Tatum has just moved in she knows what she wants which of course is Slater. So the chase begins with Slater trying to do the right thing by Tatum and his friend but Tatum isn't having it. Tatum is out to seduce Slater one hot encounter at a time.
Loved it.

A bit of forbidden romance tied in with the classic humor found with the involvement of Wingmen inc. This next book in the Bro Code series will not disappoint in bringing all the fun and steamy scenes you are always hoping for. Slater and Tatum have clear chemistry right at the start. Finn of course has a different perspective of his sister Tatum. Getting the chance to read the thoughts going on Slater's head has some of my favorite parts. Not to mention the constant double meaning conversations, and the things people overhear.
Rachel Van Dyken sure knows how to tie in serious, silly, sad and sexy.
I read this book so fast because I could not put it down and cannot wait to read the next one.
I received a pre released copy of this book.

And then there were two....Pleasure Ponies left at the college. Finn and Slater.
In this stand alone book, Finn's sister, Tatum, transfers to the school, moves into thier dorm suite and deciedes that Slater is going to be her choice of entertainment.
This book is, in many ways, a lot lighter and funnier than the previous books in the series. The antics that go on in in this book, had me laughing out loud (I was glad no one was home to see me). The chemistry is off the charts!
There are parts that are serious and are addressed in a manner that does not tear your heart out.
Slater is the kind of guy, I wish I had as a friend in college. Tatum might make me head for the hills!
I read an advanced copy for an homest review.

I have a feeling that Rachel van Dyken should write a college full of stories! She has a delightful way of combining emotion and humor all in a great package! I loved how Slater and Tatum tried to stay in the 'friend-zone'...and failed. I also appreciated how sensitive and caring Slater was; you have to love a guy who appreciates body products and your emotions.

Tatum is the sister of Slater's best friend, that's why they have to resist one another. The problem is they have already gotten a taste which makes it all the more difficult.

I liked how Tatum knew exactly what she wanted and went after it. Slater was a lot of fun to read, especially when he tried to avoid temptation.

This book is exactly what you would expect from the title and even more fun. I couldn't put it down.

Slater at times doesn't understand where his woman's mind is at, “I’m sporting a boner, and you’re fixated on my towel?” Slater is a bossy one, "I groaned. “You’re not leaving this house without wearing a bra.” I liked this book, I really loved Slater.

Avoiding Temptation is the third book in the Bro Code series by the ever-talented, Rachel Van Dyken. Each book can be read as standalone but I highly recommend reading the whole series since it’s all kids of sexy, sweet, and hilarious. The Pleasure Ponies were down to two. Two down and two to go...

Slater and Finn. Best friends. Roommates. The two Pleasure Ponies on campus. Two seniors who were not allowed to date. Client or not. It was a Wingmen rule. One they never had an issue with until she walked in. Tatum. A stranger to Slater and a little sister to Finn. In Slater’s defense he didn’t know that the girl he was making out with against the wall was Finn’s sister. She also happened to be their new dorm mate. And a temptation to Slater. Finn told him she was off-limits.

Tatum wanted him before she even met him. Slater had no idea what he has unleashed without knowing it. She knew she should leave him alone. He was after-all her brother’s best friend but she wasn’t a little girl anymore. She knew what and who she wanted and it was Slater. But will it be worth it if she ruined a friendship?

I can’t really say more than that but I will say that I didn’t want the book to end! I have been falling for Slater with each book and now I am completely in love with the man. He is so fucking funny. Blunt. Sweet. Hot as fuck. And I could say the exact same for Tatum except I would add daring as hell. I loved their banter. Chemistry. And crazy antics. I just love them so hard. And Finn...oh, Finn. You are too much. I can’t wait his story!

Three down. One to go!

Quotes:

“You a clinger?” I asked.
One shoulder lifted and fell in a casual shrug. “Not unless I’m being picked up and slammed against the nearest wall.” She took a step forward. “No.”

“I’ll be the best friend you never knew you always wanted—needed—” he took another step “—craved.”
“Yeah okay, Romeo.” I put my hand up. “Know your audience.”

“That smile scares me.” I grabbed the juice and sniffed the top.
She rolled her eyes.“Good grief, if I was going to hurt you, I wouldn’t just kill you dead. I’d torture you first. I watch Dateline. I’m not an amateur.”

Definitely not my favorite book by Rachel Van Dyken but by no means a bad read, this quick and sexy story features a feisty, troublemaking college student and her brother’s best friend. At novella length, this flies by and has plenty of great banter. There’s some angst given the forbidden nature of the relationship, but the overall feel of the story is light and fun. It faltered for me because of the focus on sex, starting with a kiss before names are exchanged and continuing with a complete WTF moment in a co-ed shower. It’s a lot of fun but I couldn’t always take the relationship seriously.

The story follows Tatum, a transfer student who just started attending the same college as her protective big brother. Within minutes of meeting her brother’s best friend, Slater, they exchange a steamy kiss that blurs the boundaries of their relationship. Though Slater knows Tatum’s brother would kill him if he pursued his sister, the sexual tension between them is so strong that it cannot be ignored. As Slater wars with his feelings, he begins to get to know Tatum better and discovers that it’s more than lust between them.

I’m definitely used to a much slower burn from Van Dyken, so while the writing itself is as strong as always, it felt like the physical side of things dominated the story. If you’re okay with that, you’ll probably take no issues with the story - it’s got everything else that we’ve come to know and love about Van Dyken’s writing. Without a doubt, the story grew on me as it went along, but it was difficult to overcome the first impression. My favorite part was the humor involving Tatum’s brother, Finn. There are some truly funny moments, and I am absolutely looking forward to his book. I received an ARC via Social Butterfly PR and am voluntarily leaving a review of this funny read.

Avoiding Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken is the very definition of good time in romance. Slater and Tatum's unique chemistry made me laugh till my stomach hurt and also raised the heat quite a few notches. It was a superbly written sweet, sexy, funny and a bit of forbidden brother's best friend story.

Tatum is off limits to Slater. One: she is his partner aka best friend aka fellow Pleasure Pony Finn's sister. Second: he has a troubled past regarding his own sister. Third: Tatum is hiding a big secret from him that would make him push away completely. But Tatum is determined to break down his resolve because she owes a lot of her present happiness to this guy. Why? How? You need to join this hilarious, slow burn and steamy chase to know more.

This story is a light hearted take on brother's best friend. Rather than making it angsty and suffering, Rachel Van Dyken gave the familiar trope a witty twist. I loved Tatum. Her past relationship was bitter and destroyed her. But she got herself back and I mentally clapped slowly how she went all out for what she wants. It was so funny and crazy to see this sassy, sweet, fiery and mischievous girl making Slater uncomfortable. The Slater who can make girls drop panties with a smile. His calm, cool and confident swagger got a major hit by Tatum. I thouroughly enjoyed his uncomfortable encounters with Tatum as he tried to hide and control his burning attraction to her. Or how they tried to hide from Finn. They resisted till the end but damn the explosion was worth all the waiting.

Avoiding Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken was an unputdownable sexy, witty and emotional read. You can definitely expect a party of fun, sin and love!

A perfect standalone in the Bro Code Series, this the latest read from Rachel Van Dyken has me totally hooked to her work all over again.
Slater was just everything I thought he was going to be and that actually surprised me because he had a few foibles that had me scratching my head wondering …why? I liked the fact that he wasn’t afraid to admit that he fancied a little bit of what Leo had, something and someone for himself, a partner that he could settle down with, little did he realise that his heart was already falling for his best friends sister.
It was virtually impossible for the pair of them to keep their distance, after all, they are sharing living space but that doesn’t mean that Slater doesn’t try…the fly in the ointment was the fact that Tatum didn’t want to keep her distance…and so the fun and game began.
The connection between the two of them was palpable, and it was easy to see why the author presented such richly rounded and interesting characters that I wanted to know what was going on with them, they brought so much to the story that it wasn’t just the dynamic between Slater and Tatum that kept me enthralled but also the brother-sister relationship between Finn and Tatum.
It is always interesting when there is a sibling aspect to a storyline, and this was no different. How would what was happening between Tatum and Slater affect Finn and what did it have in store for their Wingman business.
With Finn’s story still to come, I have to say that I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for him.
Superbly written this was a fantastic read.

Slater has found himself in quite the predicament... he has met his match, the woman of his dreams, and can't have her. She is forbidden on so many levels! As a member of the team at Wingman Inc. he signed an agreement that he would not date or become involved with anyone. It's a company that helps women find their happy again after heartbreak, and Slater is quite good at what he does...the women on campus that he has helped sing his praises all the time.

But there is one woman in particular that wants to be able to attest to his skills on a more personal level... his roommates little sister Tatum. She has switched schools just to be closer to him and has made her intentions clear, but letting her act on them could bring a whole host of complications to Slater's life. He admits they have some serious chemistry, but he isn't so sure he wants to lose his friend and job over a little fling!

Avoiding Temptation is an intoxicating little tale that will have you hooked from the very first page! Watching Slater try to resist Tatum, and stay under her brother's radar was quite entertaining... it was a very sexy game of cat and mouse! I really enjoyed this newest installment to the Bro Code series, Slater and Tatum brought life to the pages, and put on a very exciting little show. Highly recommend this one, it's good on the heart and certain to leave you harboring a serious book boyfriend crush!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

Avoiding Temptation is a brother’s best friend romance packed full of explosive chemistry, swoon worthy moments and a few emotional ones.

Tatum and Slater had INSTANT chemistry and it only grew from there. I loved their first interaction and Finn’s reaction to catching them. The banter, the chemistry, everything about these two was great from the start. I fell in love with both these characters.

Slater has a side to him I didn’t even know. He has experienced loss, pain and heartache. He is so caring and when it comes to Tatum it really shows. He also has a protective side. Of course, he knows he shouldn’t be with her, he shouldn’t go after her, but these two are drawn together like moths to a flame. Tatum, that girl. I LOVE her. She hasn’t had the best relationships and it lead to some pretty horrible things, even her family life isn’t the best, minus her relationship with Finn. But she finds her confidence, she goes after what she wants. Can’t help be applaud the girl.

There is a little bit of Leo and Kora in this one, which I LOVED. Plus, plenty of Finn. I loved the friendship between Finn and Deacon. There are a few times throughout this book that showed just how strong their bond is with each other.

Avoiding Temptation is another fantastic addition to the Bro Code Series and I can’t wait to see what is in store for Finn.

Avoiding Temptation was everything! I love Slater so much.
This book is a Bro Code Novel, part of Wingman Inc series, but it can be read as a standalone. Slater is my favorite. We first met him in Co-Ed when he was mistakenly paied with a female roommate. We learned during that novel how awful some people can be when Slater told the story about his sister killing herself. It's been awhile since I read Co-ed so I'd forgotten what happened. We learn more about how awful High School was for Slater, and how he was a victim of bullying. Thankfully his mom stopped him from something tragic and he bounced back.
Enter Tatum. She's a transfer from another college, a stranger to Slater, and just happens to be his best friend's sister. They meet at a party & make out until Slater gets a cold dose of reality from Finn. Tatum seems to be a confident woman who knows what she wants, but there's things that led to the school transfer that even her brother doesn't know.
The magnetism between Tatum and Slater is undeniable. How do you avoid temptation when it happens to be your new roommate??
I love how Rachel Van Dyken isn't afraid to write about social issues involving suicide prevention, bullying, and physical/sexual abuse. She does so in a way that brings awareness and hopefully hope to those who might be going through something similar. Thank you for another great book!

Avoiding Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken
Reviewer: Chelsea
Rating: 4 stars!!

One more Pleasure Pony find love in the third book in this series!! I was so excited that this was Slaters book! I have loved him since book one and wanted to get in his head since then!!

This book starts with a punch, literally and ends with a gunshot, it kept me on my toes and I loved the ride! Slater meets Finns sister in an unconventional way that ends up with him getting punched in the face by one of his best friends. How can he avoid her when she is everywhere, literally.

Tatum knew who Slater was before he recognized her so she used that to her advantage. I loved getting to see more of Finns background through Tatum and sometimes I felt so bad for her.

I really liked this story! I loved the chemistry between these two and o was so happy to at least get more information on the previous Pleasure Ponies that have since found love but I also was sad that we didn’t get much from them.

All that to say I can’t wait for the finale in this series!! Finns book may by my favorite!! I can’t wait to see who he falls for!!

Avoiding Temptation is the 3rd book in the Bro Code Series. We first met Slater in Co-Ed and I was intrigued by his character and his story when I read it a year ago and was excited to get into his book and boy does it start off with a bang! The moment Slater meets Tatum the sexual chemistry is immediate and intense! Slater soon finds out Tatum is Finn’s sister so she is immediately forbidden and he has to avoid temptation at all costs otherwise risk loosing a friendship with his best friend.

What I love most about this book is the witty one liners, the snarky comments and playful banter. I lost count how many times I gasped and laughed out loud. But on top of the humor Rachel Van Dyken is incredibly talented at intertwining a beautiful story of friendship and love with the perfect amount of humor.

This is a quick fast past read and I couldn’t get enough. I loved the return of a much loved character from a previous series.

These books are phenomenal and I cannot wait for Finn’s book up next.
