A shifter, three sexy mages, and an Elemental with magic thought to be extinct… what could possibly go wrong?
I was born the day my parents died—talk about luck. I grew up bouncing around the foster system, never knowing when the rug would be pulled out from under me. Now, I’m twenty-two and while I’m free of the dangers of my childhood, life still isn’t easy.
When a strange couple appears chanting in some weird language, I try to walk away, but the guy whips out a freaking fire lasso and starts making like he’s going to hogtie me right there on the street. That’s when all kinds of crazy breaks loose. Next thing I know, I’m strapped to a bed in what looks like a hospital, I can’t speak, and some woman is telling me I’m a Vox Elemental, which leaves me a choice between getting shipped off to a magic school to train my voice or be silenced forever.
Of course I choose the school; who wouldn’t? Turns out my new home is a highly competitive, cut-throat academy where one wrong step could cost me everything. I promise myself that I’ll work hard and get free, which all goes out the window when I meet not one, not two, but four of the hottest guys I have ever seen, and they are definitely not part of the curriculum. As if juggling new relationships, a new school, and some rather testy mean girls weren’t enough, there’s also someone or something making a meal out of the student body—literally. Add that to the things I have to manage. Assuming I survive…
Some luck, huh?
Publisher’s note:Academy of Elemental Magic is a full-length reverse harem supernatural fantasy academy series with magic and steam meant for mature readers.
Fiona Starr is a USA Today Bestselling Author of Paranormal Romance. She writes everything from Reverse Harem to M/F, as long as it has magic, shifters, and other creatures! She loves fated mates and enemies to lovers romance, even better when it's set in a gripping mystery. Actually, most tropes are fair game, as long as we get to the HEA (which we always do!). She lives her happily ever after in the mountains of Colorado with her hunky husband and their fleet of fur babies.
So this was... something. I was really curious about the powers and the mc being a vox. But honestly this was 30% powers, 50% boys and 20% information. There was no chemistry between the characters even tho eventually they all got together out of nowhere. It wasn't bad, it seemed rushed but it doesn't give that anger that comes when you read a really bad book. It has potential if taken a bit more care of. Hopefully the second book is going to be better.

I had so many expectations. Why God Why??!! I have never been so disappointed in a book. Oh the masterpiece it could have been. The minute I read the synopsis I was so freaking excited. When you have read as many Paranormal and fantasy books as I have there really aren't many concepts that would surprise and excite you (I once read 200+ ebooks during my 5th semester summer break. And Yes I was counting). The book started out great, the mystery of the FMC and her powers were so intriguing. The first fight that propelled her into the world of magic gave me something to look forward to. And then the book devolved into a stupid f*ckfest. Literally.
I was impressed by the fact that the FMC felt bad about accidentally killing someone even in self defense (I have read books in the same genre where even if the MCs kill for the first time they are completely unaffected). What I couldn't digest was the fact that seeing how it was very clearly told that the FMC didn't know about the magic world and had a very human upbringing, so her getting into a poly-amorous relationship didn't strike to her as weird. Like seriously. In the human world that's called "cheating" and not "being casual". Like that didn't even register on her moral compass.
Also, the guy she was seriously dating Sasha was apparently engaged to someone else (who he had been in a relationship for years on and off) and she got upset cause clearly that's cheating and her frequent booty calls with the other mage Raff isn't (she got offended saying that he lied to her. she didn't tell him about the other guy she was screwing. That's lying by omission). Another thing that irked me was the fact that the werewolf was okay with sharing his mate. If you have read any werewolf romance you would know werewolf mating is sacred, they are possessive and the only time they share is if the girl has more than one mates. Nothing was specified about the mating so I don't know maybe that's not the case here. And this whole storyline made me realize that I had come here for a powerful, badass and most importantly self respecting heroine and a really nice paranormal mystery. Instead I got a freaking soap opera with the FMC fawning over every guy she met and then immediately screwing him. (I know it's a reverse harem but c'mon, atleast have some chemistry). I won't be continuing this series that's for sure. I hope the author has other series that I could read cause the writing was pretty good regardless of the story.

2.5-3 stars. Honestly this was a pretty enjoyable fast read. The reason for my star power here has more to do with the fact that though i finished it just a couple days ago... I'm having trouble even remembering the ending lol. I will say that the whole Vox (Voice) Elemental had a unique flair but I feel like the whole supernatural world itself was sort of glossed over, more like a whole wham, bam, thank you ma'am intro. Its insta everything in this book.. insta magic, insta lust, insta enemies, insta love, insta harem. Makes sense really with such a short book.
Character wise.. I'm still on the fence about Whitt.. not sure yet what is going on there. Most of the guys seem ok. Jamey is my favorite but in all honesty I still feel like we barely even know any of these people. Not sure if I'm all that involved yet. I do feel like the "villian('s)" here were mere child's play in the grand scheme of things. Its crazy that the book has ended after just one small challenge.
I'm on the fence when it comes whether to continue this series. It could go either way at this point. We will just have to see.
One day when she is attacked by strangers Ava finds out she can do magic
She is brought to a magic academy to learn to control her magic. She also finds out that her magic should have been extinct, but it seems it isn’t. Next to that her parents weren’t killed in an accident, but got murdered. She wakes up at the academy during summer break, so she has some weeks to work on her magic before most of the students come back for the schoolyear. She also makes friends with two girls and some really hot men.
And why choose when you can have them all? Raff is the first one she has a very hot time with. But there is also Sacha and Jamey. Jamey is taking it slow for a reason. Next to all the sexy and steamy moments with these men, Ava learns how to control her magic more and more.
But of course there have to be some evil people to, attacking girls when school has started again. But it seems they are after Ava, can she protect herself?
For that you have to read the book, you won’t regret it when you like a book with magic and sexy men.
This was a quick fun read that had some interesting characters, and a decent magic system (well, from what little I’ve seen so far).
Only frustrating elements were:
1) that although Natalie started strong, she abruptly fades out. What good is an antagonist with a good reason for a grudge if they aren’t utilized? 2) that there is no build up towards Ava building her harem. She jumps into bed with the first guy quick enough, and I’d wished for a bit more will they/won’t they.
The setting worked well, and they characters find themselves at numerous locations on campus and not just the usual dorm, classroom, cafeteria combo. Left on a bit of a cliffhanger, but not one that’s going to drive you nuts... at least I don’t think so, anyway 🙂
Spoiler alert so please dont read the 2nd paragraph if you dont want to know a small detail about the book! This was a breath of fresh air and unlike any other Paranormal Academy RH book that I have read and I have read several!
What made me love this book the most was that the heroine knew who she wanted and didnt question it! And the same goes for the guys. There were no alpha possive men who didnt want to share with other men. This book was written like it was a normal everyday thing. Ava didnt question weather it was morally wrong to want more than one guy and she was even ok with the thought of sharing one of her guys with another female as long as it meant she could have him.
I do wish there was a bit more getting to know each other before jumping right into bed but it seemed to all workout! I cannot wait to read more!!!

I liked Ava - she is strong and resilient. She has had a lot of crap in her life, but when she suddenly finds out she is magical, everything is turned upside down. The romance is fast paced and fast burn. I do wish there was some conversation between the guys and her about their feelings of being in an RH, the guys aren’t really friends, and there isn’t any talk that an RH relationship is the norm or acceptable in this world, so that piece felt a little awkward. There is some OW drama, that mostly is handled off screen so that felt like it was just thrown in. However, I did have fun reading it and am intrigued by the world and Ava so I will be checking out book 2.
First half was alright but had Insta lust. Then we skip over a month with her already in a physical relationship with one of the men. Somehow one of the men was in a situation engagement but didn't think to explain when she found out. Then acted like everything was normal the next time he saw her? She was warned about the playboy and still decided she wanted him because he made her wet every time he's in the room. Barf. Everything felt kinda shallow.
This is a magical start to a series and I have found a new author to follow. Ava and her men have worked their way through a lot and I cannot wait for this series to continue. A definite must read.
Oh my, I just love reading about Ava and her very interesting adventure. Ava finding out she has magic but not just any magic all the different types of elemental magic. And the fact that she learns that she could possibly have a chance to succeed with her elemental magic. The other characters were just as well thought of as Ava is. I cant wait to read more.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Hidden Power is short length book in a typical academy style setting that stays very shallow to truly feel anything and finishes off rather soon.
I picked up this book for the somewhat novelty aspect of vox powers, it's not that greatly utilised. Just one training scene and the climax fight scene, both which felt brief to actually feel any impact. Even this elemental magic doesn't play a badass role to bring liveliness to the scenes, most of the times I felt this immersive magical essence missing. The lack of world building could be attributed for that. I mean there is barely anything just to get a gist of this supernatural world but not enough to add some weight to this academy location.
The FMC doesn't have much of a memorable personality, just a reactionary character for the plot elements. The guys were the weakest. There is barely any details to any of the three dudes that insta connect with her, not to mention a fourth one coming in towards the end. Their interactions with Ava are bland. Her hook up with Raff is too soon with no content to show anything beyond the lusting at first meet. Seriously, I couldn't feel any chemistry with any of the guys without any fucking substance to base that on. As if Sasha dude had any characterisation, there is stupidity added in the mix that doesn't help his character at all.
There is very weak evil dude for the climax to take place, it's not having enough space in a too short book and ends up just being bland like the romance to create any hook for me to continue.
It wasn't terrible, but not good either. First, I hated the guys' names. Why did they all have androgynous names? She was a little too affected by them right of the bat, too. I hate insta-love with zero angst. Boring. Also, I didn't like Ava's lack of passion or reaction to, well, anything. Everything was just a little to even-keeled for my taste. thus fucking up the only interesting relationship development left. The author seems to turn every potential climactic moment into a dud. No reason to continue, so I won't.
Amazeballs i love it read it super fast enjoyed every second felt short cause i wanted more and more haha Yay for a good book restoring my love of books my brain feels partially healed from all the meh books ive read lately fingers crossed this awesomeness book trend continues!!!
We meet Ava under interesting circumstances and we know she's got some magic. Vox Elemental who can conjure all the elements instead of 1-2. She's more or less forced to attend this school to learn control or lose her voice forever without ever getting it back. Her kind is extremely rare and she's the only one we know of. Most of the magical community is okay with her kind but there is some that are not. There are some sexy guys who she is drawn to. That's the gist of the book. Here is what I think and I'm being 100% honest...there's no other way for me.
This book reads super fast. You blink and its over. If I didnt know better I'd think this was a YA because it reads like one. They are in their early 20s but act like 17 year olds. To be honest it feels like there wasn't a lot of effort put into this book. Dont get me wrong authors work hard on books but there's a lot that bothers me in this one. There is definitely a plot but not much to it. She didnt develop it very far and same with the characters she created. We need more building of the story and characters for sure. She gave us a skimming of information if I were to describe it. Ava's character bothered me quite a bit. When she first arrives she's pretty ticked off but she does a complete 180 pretty fast and gets all excited about stuff. She makes friends instantly which okay but its like they moved into bffs in 2 seconds. Not really believable to me. Then she starts meeting some hotties. Sasha, Rafferty, and Jamey. She turns into a horndog with Rafferty knows nothing about the guy only that he's a ladies man. The love scenes were okay but not spectacular. There's no emotional connection between her and the guys. What she has with Jamey is more real than what she has with the other 2. I like him best. Not that the other 2 arent important the author just didnt do enough for them. Then...we meet a 4th guy Whitt. We know nothing about him. Ava doesnt even talk to him besides "nice to meet you" and shook his hand. Then its like he didnt exist in the book or to Ava. I'm like what happened??? I think as little as he was in the book it would have been more prudent to introduce him at the very very end of this book or in book 2 where we get to know him. Then again we dont know much about the other guys either. This definitely doesnt read like other Academy books. Ava fights nothing. She's like okay with EVERYTHING! There is sinister stuff happening but it doesnt even really happen til 70-80% in. Its very rushed. I liked the blurb but man we just didnt get that. I feel let down. On a positive note...I liked the story and I like it enough to continue. To me I think why it went wrong was that there is a lot of information the author wanted to put out there and tell us but didnt want to make the book long for whatever reason? So, she cut some things short and tried to jam it into a novella length book. I mean most of it went to that 70-80% mark. Just a guess though. Hopefully 2nd book is more put together.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and the first book in the Academy of Elemental Magic series. Avaline is attacked by magic wielders while at her summer job. She never even knew real magic existed. However she feels something bubbling up in her, and to save her life she somehow manages to tap into her own dormant magic, kill one of her attackers and incapacitate the other one. She wakes up a month later on the grounds of an academy that teaches mages how to use and control their magic. She’s given a choice, stay at the academy and hone her gifts or return to the human world without her voice.
While I enjoyed the book, I didn’t feel it had the “WOW” factor for me to give it a higher rating. I found the storyline very promising, and will definitely continue the series. Perhaps I need to layoff academy stories for a while because they’re all beginning to sound the same . . . An innocent human doesn’t know she has powers, ends up at a supernatural academy where 3 or 4 of the most gorgeous and sought after men all fall in love with her and are content to share her while protecting her from evil forces trying to destroy her . . . While still dealing with school and mean girl shit. I’m still down for this trope but reading about 8 of these series back to back make them all seem so formulaic and I’m looking for something that will really set it apart from the rest. Maybe an unexpected twist - like one of the men decides that he can’t share afterall and leaves the harem . . . Or something happens between the heroine and one of the men that she can’t forgive and ends the relationship with one member of her harem . . . Something really different. (If anyone has read something like this, please leave a comment cuz I’d love to read it too!)
The other issue I had is that even for a paranormal reverse harem story, she fell into bed with her men awfully fast. There was absolutely NO development of any type of relationship. I mean, she had sex with Raff 15 min after meeting him! The only one that she seemed to get to know before having sex with was James. So I don’t feel invested in their group relationship. It doesn’t have the feeling that I get from other RH stories, where a relationship builds between the heroine and one man first, while she feels conflicted because she has feelings for someone else too, etc. Avaline just seems ready to strip for any good looking hunk. The only different thing here I’ve never read before is that she’s willing to share one of her men, Sasha, with another woman if it means she can keep him. Of course he’s too in love with her to consider it, which is a bit disappointing. Because if the author hadn’t made Natalie a bitchy mean girl, it would have been interesting to explore a RH story where one of the men also had a relationship with someone “outside” the group. If done well, that would have definitely raised my rating of this book.
As I said, I do plan on continuing the series, so I must be invested in some way. Maybe it’s because I’m crushing on James and want to see more of him!
Tackling Hidden Power was my first attempt at trying to thin out the long list of e-books I’ve downloaded over the last few years when the Stuff-Your-Kindle-Day type events roll around—and I then promptly forget all about LOL
It was, perhaps, not a great first pick to motivate me to carry on with my plan.
The story’s pacing was fairly jerky and, the vibe, all over the place. It felt like the author couldn’t decided if she wanted to go the route of light-hearted or serious. Also, the tenses were sort of all jumbled up:
“What’s the catch?” I asked. Professor Storken looks surprised. “Catch? What do you mean?”
The insta-lust was out of control and then the book brusquely ended at a seemingly random point.
Throughout my reading journey, I kept wondering what was so special about our FMC, Avaline (aside from being a super rare Vox elemental), to have all these men—a professor included?!—so captivated and taken with her. I had zero grasp on who she was as person, aside from being a horndog with questionable morals when it came to dating—she was 100% cool with dating a dude with a committed girlfriend but categorically REFUSED to get involved with someone with a fiancé.
She was bland, unoriginal and forgettable. And it was utterly weird and glaringly conspicuous how it was never even touched upon or addressed in the slightest how she’d engaged in physical and emotional relationships with several men simultaneously. Was that common in this universe? Were the guys all chill with sharing the same woman? Did they even know they were low-key sharing a girlfriend?
There was no nuance or layers to this book, which to be fair, it was super short and only the first installment of a series, but still. There was no substance, no depth to it, and the few conflicts that arose got fixed almost instantaneously with little or no effort. Things felt half baked and barely thought through. This was an unsatisfying read all around and I won’t be continuing with the series.
Are my standards too high or am I just not picking up good books?
This book was about 150 pages of pure nothing. Ok, that might be a little harsh, but honestly, there was no character development, no plot, no history, basically no romance that was believable, no elaboration of each power, breeze past how Ava learned her powers.
She's a Vox which is supposed to be a type of mage that is "extinct", but there isn't a lot of info on the voxs. Also, the secret society that want to wipe out the voxs was a good start, but so underdeveloped. I wanted to know more. There was absolutely no connection between Ava and anyone. Her friends were random. They knock on her door and boom, friend made. Like I guess but I need them to hangout and talk to each other. I wanted a friend like Red from My Bloodline by KC Kean. Ava was just such a flat character. She was a card board box. Also, the guys were also card board boxes. If someone asked me a characteristic from anyone, I wouldn't be able to answer. Ava has sexual relations but without the foundation of a relationship or familiarity, it just felt sloppy. The only plus side was that I was starting to like the shifter. Not enough to redeem this book however. What was so annoying was that the book glossed over important points such as Ava learning how to control her powers. She gets plopped into a school and learns that she is a very powerful mage and starts to learn her powers but that's all off the page... wtf. The ending was kind of stupid. The two girls who are friends with Sasha's fiance were behind controlling the demon (i forgot what they called it) and ok who are they? Shouldn't we have been introduced to the "villains" so that it is more of a shock or at least so the reader has a reason to care that it was them who did it?
Out of no where, we learn that Sasha has a fiance, but literally I didn't see any romance between Sasha and Ava. The revelation of the fiance was just awkward, weird and random. Also, there was no elaboration on why Sasha has a fiance in the first place. Ava just avoids him. Also, at the end, we get introduced to the teacher who completes the harem and my first thought was "why"? She already doesn't have any romance between the others and now we add another... k. I want books like Zodiac Academy, Sera's Curse, Seven Wishes, Variant Lost, Trickery etc and this just wasn't it.

Ava has been in foster homes all her life. She was taken in by Marin, whom she calls foster granny. They are enjoying time together before Ava has to start work. On her way to work, she is attacked by two people. She doesn't understand what is going on, only that magic is real. Ava is injured in the attack. When Ava awakens from her injuries, she finds out things about her and her parents. Ava finds out the she is a Vox Elemental, they are extremely powerful and rare. Ava is told either go to school to learn or lose her voice forever in order to go home. Ava is taken to the school to meet the headmaster. When she goes there, she meets Sasha, she is instantly drawn to him. She finds out that she will be tutored to get her caught up in school but also to help her learn her magic. Ava makes friends with two girls at school, they spend a lot of time together. When another male student comes in, she is instantly drawn to him to. She can't believe how her body is reacting to the men around her. The man is one of her friends brothers. They are drawn to another. Ava is also drawn to another boy named James, he is a sweet and respectful of her. He keeps telling her they have an affinity connection. They feel every time they touch. Ava will get closer to the men as she falls into a routing with school. When school starts, she finds out a truth about Sasha, she is being bullied by a group of girls. Ava has a vision of another man she never met but feels like she knows him. Things get really dangerous at school for the students, they believe it an animal attack. Due to James attacking the creature to protect Ava and a hurt student, they learn there is dark magic going on.
This book sets up the character Avaline, her learning about her magic and some of her past, her relationships with the guys. The book is a great read, but gets even better at the end. You will enjoy this book, but remember it is a reverse harem. If you don't like them, you might not enjoy this book, even thought that doesn't not take away from the story. I really enjoyed the ride of the book and looking forward to the next one.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I got this as a freebie a few months ago as I hunted for books to finish my Paranormal Roman & Urban Fantasy A-Z challenge on Goodreads.
This starts with Avaline doing her job as a lifeguard at the lake when she is attacked with magic by two assailants who know her name. She wakes up a month later to learn she, too, has magic. A dangerous magic. She has two choices and decides to stay at the school to learn how to control her vox magic.
I can't decide whether I liked this or not.
Everything was happening so quickly in it. She meets the guys, she lusts after them, she sleeps with one of them very quickly. She gets to lessons and on her second try ever she manages to make fire. I just expected things to take time...for her to initially struggle considering she didn't even know she had magic until a day or two ago.
I struggled to connect with the characters and wasn't really convinced by their relationships. I didn't feel any real sort of chemistry going on between any of them. Once again, I feel like this bit was rushed. I get lust but... I wasn't a fan of how the author wrote the romance parts.
This story had a lot of promise but we don't really learn much of anything. Ava learns about magic in lessons but we don't get to hear it. To me it feels like a bit of paper that's been scrunched into a ball and then flattened causing creases and ripples that means some details in the story have been glossed over. It could do with expanding a little with more details on certain aspects.
At this point I don't believe I'll be reading more of this series.
This book/series came to me as a suggestion on Amazon, as I've been reading a ton of Academy/Reverse Harem books for the past year. I thought I would check it out as I've kind of been on a reading slump lately and have been looking for something new to read.
Uh I guess I liked Ava, she's a young woman at twenty years old that lost her parent's when she born and than was basically passed from foster home to foster home, until she landed with her "Foster Granny" as she likes to call her. Than all of the sudden she finds out that life might not be what it actually seems for her and she finds herself with a choice of going to a Magical Academy and learn how to harnest her powers or lose her voice all together. I found Ava to be kind of wishy-washy with her feelings.
I have to say that Jamey is probably my favorite of the guy's, than probably Raff, and than Sasha (I would have said Sasha second except for the fact he kept a big secret from her.)
As for how this book went as a paranormal academy book I think it went pretty normally. Dead Parents? Check.... Poor Lost Female Lead that finds out they secretly have powers? Check.... Tons of hot guy's veying for LF attention? Check... I did enjoy this first book though and did think that this series had potential. I will say that there was just No Big Wow moment for me in this book, but it held my interest enough that I wanted to read more of the series.
I feel like this book would do a lot better as an erotic series with fantasy aspects cause dayum, there be a lot of sex talks.
Just kidding. But she does act like a horn dog for more than the first half of the book, and when she wasn’t horning on the guys, she was repeating herself about her supposed new life and what was expected of her. Part of me got the impression we were paddling around on water waiting for the green light to advance.
I liked the guys, they were done nicely. A lot better than most reverse harems I find nowadays. There was no awkwardness and I loved how she got with them and how they complimented each other. I liked that there was no drama, that people didn’t really gawk at her being with more than one person. It’s not like... NORMAL, but it isn’t gross or anything. Thank the Lordt.
The story is fun, and I like the idea of vox elementals. I find it a little weird that people find her abnormal. If she went negative, she could say they’re treating her like an experiment they’re allowing to live because they wanna study her. But so far people have been trying to be accommodating to her situation.
Overall it was a little more than okay. I liked a few things and though it wasn’t a glowing experience, it’s something I want to return to.
Avaline or Ava Sable bounced around allot after her parents died what she doesn't know is the truth about her and her parents and then a nice lady takes her in and raises her. And at the age of 22 she's in college has a job and everything seems okay until to crazy people with magic attack her she's given a choice learn to Barnes her power of forever be silenced she takes option one. Her new school is full of plenty not mates and one sweet wolf. Sasha a mage with secrets Rafferty the player and Jamey the shifter still waters run deep. Jamey and Ava have something special then there's the wild card Whittney don't know much about him but Ava she's dreamed about him. The thing about Ava she shouldn't exist she's a Vox she can wield all the elements which has put a pretty big target on her back mean girls hate her and a secret sect wants to make sure she doesn't exist anymore. There closer then anyone knows two students have been hurt and the evil is after Ava next who can she really trust. There's intrigue a steamy romance or three developing and a magical power to be learned Ava has her hands full at the Academy of Elementals.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.
Avaline bounced around foster homes until she was 9 and landed with her foster Granny, Marin. At 22 years old, Avaline is attacked by two magic users. She learns that both her and Marin have magic as well. Avaline is a Vox who can tap into all elements of magic, whereas most magic users only have one or two elements. Vox's are rare because they have mostly been exterminated by the Order of Scorpius. She joins the The Stormwood Academy for Elemental Magic Users to learn how to control her powers. A shadow banshee attacks a couple girls at school, while trying for and failing to kill, Aveline. The the banshee gets to Aveline one night and she uses her power to kill the banshee, kill one of its hosts, and blinds another. The hosts controlling the banshee were a couple of mean-girls at the Academy who were performing an initiation into the Order. The book ends with three of her harem happily accepting their situation and a fourth one joining.
She jumped into bed with almost all of her harem members right away. There was no angst, no building relationships, no doubts, nothing. And now there's nothing left to look forward to in book 2. Disappointing because I like the way the author writes.

ONE WICKEDLY DELIGHTFUL TREAT!!! Smashing! Fiona blows through with gale force winds, swirling and swaying, mixing it up and nailing it down, tossing this bad boy into the eye of the storm, blasting it into a tailspin with an astonishing culmination. One tumultuous wild ride blowing all the churning emotions forward, fusing this gem together piece by piece seamlessly. Bridging the trials and tribulations, along with a slew of shocking twists and unexpected turns, tempting our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. Add magic, undercurrents and perplexing situations along with a boatload of trouble while dodging dastardly intentions, makes for one thrilling rollercoaster ride. The chemistry sizzles, intense and explosive. The characters are authentic and original with qualities and traits that transforms into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and colorful descriptions so rich and lively, they blend and flow smoothly. Remarkable job Fiona, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
For starters, I debated between 2 or 3 stars. But 3 stars means the book is a good read and just couldn't give it that. Don't get me wrong, the storyline had the potential to be not only a good read but a great read. Also very little grammatical errors which is a huge plus. Problems I have were the core of the book. The fast forwards didn't allow the reader to gain a connection with the characters nor the relationships with said characters. I feel that Sasha was cheated out of monumental "firsts". It's okay to fast forward, but those only work once the strength of characters and relationships are established or if nothing happens during the fast forwards, this one failed to deliver. So even though I thought the storyline was great, it just fell flat with the characters because I never connected nor got to know the characters; they were just there. I want to fall into a story not just read words on a page and that's basically what the book delivered. Sorry to be harsh, but I give honest reviews.
Too many of, "The Academy", books have become the new, "Michael Crighton or Dean Koontz", books. Same formula, same basic theme. There are some good ones out there that are actually ORIGINAL, but not many. This one started off ok then fell into the same trap. Girl gets mind blowing change of life experience, school or death or loss of powers, less than a day on campus becomes uncontrollably attracted to first guys she meets, less tha a day she's all about sexy time, uncontrollable urges most times without even speaking to the guy, hops on his dick, then meets another, hops on for a ride. Rinse, repeat. Nothing but physical attraction. No depth to these characters or relationships. The thing that really bugs me is the authors try to make it seem the women are taking charge in these scenarios. To a small degree yes, but, making such decisions right after thier life turns upside down is just really IMMATURE. No foundation. Just stupid. Not romantic, not even particularly sexy. Opposite of strong female IMHO. Just Icky.
As Ava is walking, two strange people begin chanting and she is attacked. She also finds out that magic is real and that she has it! She is injured in the attack and, as she recovers, she finds out her parents were murdered and that she herself is a rare Vox Elemental. But she needs to be able to control this power she had not been aware of, so she is sent to the Academy.
At school, Ava will begin to meet the people who will shape her future. She meets up with the typical school bullies. She is attracted to certain guys who will be very important to her and she receives their protection. When the students are in danger, they discover dark magic is being used. What is behind the attacks on the students? Are they after Ava?
This is a fast-paced book with lots going on. The characters are intriguing and the story line pulls the reader in from start to finish. Grab your copy and enjoy the start of a new series!
