Carnton #2

Colors of Truth

Rate this book
In a town battered and bruised by war, one woman embarks upon an impossible search—and one man must face the past in the very place that almost destroyed him.

Tennessee, 1866. According to the last letter Irish immigrant Catriona O'Toole received from her twin brother, Ryan, he was being dispatched to Franklin, Tennessee, where—as a conscripted Confederate soldier—he likely endured the bloody Battle of Franklin that claimed the lives of thousands. Catriona leaves behind the lush green of their Irish homeland in search of him, with nothing to her name except the sum of cash Ryan sent to their family. Now, as the sole provider for her seven-year-old spitfire sister, Nora, Catriona hopes to reunite the siblings—the only surviving members of their devastated family.

Wade Cunningham is a former Federal soldier who now works for the newly formed United States Secret Service and is trying to uncover counterfeiting rings in the postwar South. In order to infiltrate their sophisticated enterprise, he must pose as a former Confederate in Franklin—a town where counterfeit greens run rampant. When Wade meets Catriona, he is immediately intrigued by her and the little redheaded scamp in her care—but what he doesn't anticipate is that the cash in Catriona's possession is some of the most convincing counterfeit money he's ever seen. Soon the object of Wade's affection is also the suspect in a major crime—one he's expected to prosecute.

Tamera Alexander is one of the authors I most admire, and this book is yet another example of why. Her characters are layered and endearing, the plot is full of believable conflict and tension, the pacing is perfect, and the themes are significant and meaningful. There is power in Tamera's writing. Her stories shine light in dark places, offering a beacon of truth and hope. I loved Colors of Truth and found it completely satisfying.

'As hard as it is to face the truth, it's even harder to live with a lie.'

In 1866 Franklin, Tennessee, Catriona O'Toole arrives with her little sister Nora to search for their brother Ryan. His last letter to Catriona said he was conscripted as a Confederate soldier. He also sent a large amount of money for their family to make a life in the US. When Catriona arrives, she learns of the horrific battle of Franklin and fears the worst. She has to find a way to make a new life now.

Wade Cunningham, former Federal officer and now a member of the newly formed Secret Service returns to Franklin to uncover counterfeiting rings in the South, which is very prevalent. He has to pose as a Confederate, an abhorrent act to him. Then he discovers that the cash Catriona carries is some of the best forgery he has ever seen.

'No matter the debate among his own countrymen, he could not and would not, abide living in a nation where fellow human beings were bought and sold like cattle.'

Book two in Tamera Alexander's Carton novels is a most wonderful addition to this series. These Carnton novels are so moving, totally grabbing my heart with the intensity of the words she has set forth on these pages. Gripping is a good word to use to describe this book. Alexander's research is impeccable and she brings this history to life in her readers' minds. Absolutely compelling, this book held me captive till the last page. And I shed many tears during the reading of it.

Much of the history in this book is not easy to read, but Alexander handles it in such a respectful way that it brings honor to that grievous time in our nation's history. And I highly recommend her website for even more information about Carnton and the events that took place there in November of 1865 during the battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. It is absolutely fascinating and heartrending at the same time. Tamera Alexander has written a masterpiece. Her heart is in this book. I very highly recommend.

Recently my family and I visited Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee.
Yes, I visited it because I was inspired to by this book.
After visiting the house then reading the book completely came to life. The characters and the plot I could completely visualize it in my mind.
Historical fiction books are my go to reads and they are all the more realistic when you visit the site of the books.
I absolutely love this author's books. They are so full of detail, you can easily visualize what is going on.
I have learned a lot from this author. Immaculate research.
Looking forward to what she puts out next.

Tamera Alexander is such an amazing writer. Her ability to tell a story is exceptional. As always, the descriptions throughout the story makes you feel transported right into the scene being described!
The historical detail was so rich. I always get a history lesson when I read a Tamera Alexander book. Reading this was like watching a really good historical drama.
The story was slow in unfolding but Tamera took such care in explaining, with excellent detail, the setting & backstory of the time period, while using historical facts that, together, laid the ground work to help you understand the plot better.
I also loved how there was a strong spiritual undertone, using scripture and solid Biblical truths written into the characters dialogue. This is something I always want when I'm reading and Tamera always delivers on this.
The reason this was 4 stars for me and not 5 is because it took awhile to get to the more significant, major points of the story. It was also a little less romantically focused than some of her other books. These factors are just a matter of preference for me though--it didn't make it an unpleasant read!
This was such a beautiful, heartwarming book and I'm sure anyone who loves Tamera Alexander's writing will love this one.

Tamera Alexander knows history. She knows romance. This book was so well written that I could hardly put it down. She develops her characters with such depth and allows the reader to watch them grow and develop along the way. The romance is a slow burn. The heroine, is a feisty red head Irish immigrant who is also the caretaker of her little seven year old sister. She doesn't trust easily and understandably so. The hero, is a secret service man in search of a counterfeiter. He is also a war veteran. Wade Cunningham seems to be attracted to Catriona O'Toole from the get go. He is patient with her skittishness and gains her trust and love. This was a very dark time in our American History and some scenes were hard to read and very sad. Alexander didn't sugarcoat but she did offer hope through her characters. This book is a timely story it seems even after all these years. The inspirational message blessed me and her comic relief at times put a genuine smile on my face. Alexander did a beautiful job of describing the scenery without over doing it and made me picture the rolling landscape as it was during that time.
I enjoyed the book very much and I highly recommend to any history and romance reader.

Strong characters and steeped in history. This second of the Carnton Series is set during Reconstruction, 1866, Franklin, Tennessee.

Catriona O'Toole travels with her much younger sister Nora from Ireland to Franklin with the intent of finding her twin brother Ryan. They are the only three remaining members of their family. Catriona is proud, stubborn and full of heart.

Wade Cunningham is a former Federal soldier that works for the newly formed Secret Service looking for counterfeiters.

Spunky young Nora and sweet Tempy were spectacular additions to the novel.

An enjoyable novel!

In 1866, Catriona O’Toole from County Antrim Ireland arrives in Franklin Tennessee with her little sister Nora and desperately hoping to find her twin brother Ryan. When he and his friends arrived in America they were conscripted into the confederate army and they had no choice. On his way to fight in Franklin he sent her a note and money. As it was the last place her brother was known to have been in 1864, it’s the obvious place for her to try and find out what happened to him.

Wade Cunningham is an operative for the United States Secret Service; he’s following the trail of a group of skilled and very dangerous counterfeiters. He’s received a tip off, his new job is a perfect cover for him being in Franklin and he’s working as an overseer at John McGavock’s plantation. Wade fought for the union army, he has been to the area during the war, it holds terrible memories for him and it’s the last place he wants to be. As he looks into the case, he can’t believe Catriona fresh from Ireland is a possible suspect as she has been spending counterfeit money in the town and how did she get involved?

On the way to John McGavock’s plantation an entire field has been left with partially buried confederate soldiers bodies, they died in the violent battle two years ago, he’s applied to have the body’s exhumed and offered a plot of land for them to be buried in. It’s an extremely difficult and slow job and they need someone to list any information they find out about each corpse and Catriona is in charge of writing deceased persons detail in a book. She’s praying that Ryan and his Irish friends are not found in this horrible field.

Based on a true story about the battle at Franklin in Tennessee during the Civil War: Colors of Truth has characters and a plot that are very relevant to the time period. It’s an enduring story about immigration, loss, kindness, friendship and faith. It includes awful but real facts about the American Civil War and slavery in the southern states at the time. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I gave Colors of Truth four stars. https://karrenreadsbooks.blogspot.com/

The second full-length novel in the Carnton Series (With This Pledge—novel; Christmas at Carnton—novella), Colors of Truth is a compelling tale set in post-Civil War Tennesee. With suspicion of outsiders running rife, counterfeiting running rampant, and families, cruelly torn apart and separated by slavery and war in search of one another and not about to trust strangers, it’s hard to imagine love or faith growing between people who’ve cruelly suffered the many sides of a horrific war, but Tamera Alexander pulls just that story together beautifully. I was especially intrigued by the beginnings of newly formed United States Secret Service and how they operated. Rich historical detail, well-developed characters and a romance that buds and blossoms through the era of Reconstruction, Colors of Truth was, like all of Alexander’s books, a journey to take and a pleasure to read.

Catriona O'Toole and her sister, Nora, have come to America to escape Ireland and find their brother Ryan who has been drafted into the Confederate Army. Wade Cunningham is a member of the newly formed Secret Service and is looking for a counterfeiting ring somewhere in the Franklin, Tennessee area. When Catriona uses some money Ryan has sent her, Wade discovers it is some of the counterfeit money.

This second book in the Carnton series displays Alexander's impeccable research both into counterfeiting as well as the horrendous and bloodiest battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Franklin. Her characters had depth and realism. Cat so determined to pay all her debts no matter what she had to do, Nora willing to help in any way she could, and Wade full of loyalty and honesty. Although the Battle of Franklin was utterly gruesome, Alexander managed to display that without going into excessive detail and very respectfully, and her heart for Carnton definitely shows throughout the story.

The theme of this book focuses on the importance of honesty even when it is difficult or hurts. I look forward to reading the final book in this series.

Tamera Alexander's finale to the Carnton series is an emotional rollercoaster.

Lies told to us. Lies we tell ourselves. Lies we tell others.

Catriona O'Toole and her 7-year old sister Nora recently arrive from Ireland after her remaining family has passed away. She arrives in Franklin, TN where her brother, Ryan, last reported he was after being conscripted in the Confederate Army. Catriona is on a mission to find out if Ryan is still alive and where he is.

Wade Cunningham is an undercover agent with the newly formed Secret Service to uncover a counterfeit ring. Is Catriona involved after suspicions lead to her?

Epic writing involves many B role characters that you will love, hate, and cry for. Alexander has a wonderful way of putting cinematography to words.

Everytime I read a historical fiction novel by Tamera I am transported into a different time period. The way she describes the scenes makes you feel like you are in their world. A world much different than the one we know today.

Catriona O'Toole is an Irish Immigrant that finds herself in Franklin,Tennessee shortly after the Civil War. Along with her sister, she searches for her brother who fought in the war but continues to find herself at a loss as to what happened to him. Catriona struggles to find her way as things continue to spiral out of control. She is left with virtually no money after finding out all of her money is counterfeit, the same money her brother sent her.

Wade is working as a undercover government operative trying to find out who is making counterfeit money. But he did not think he would end up back in Tennese, the one place he badly wants to forget. Wade is dedicated to the cause but seems to find himself distracted by the beautiful Catriona.

I love reading historical fiction because I always feel I learn so much. This novel is no exception Alexander shows all the sides to a war that forever changed history, and the lives that were forever impacted by it.

Colors of Truth by Tamera Alexander takes plays at the Carnton House, and takes into account the real history of the house that served as a confederate field hospital and was right next to a major battle field that decided the course and end of the Civil War. I absolutely loved the historical setting, it felt very real and haunting at times. This second book takes place about a year after that battle, when Catriona and her little sister arrive in Carnton from Ireland, in search for her twin brother. He left for a better life in America, was drafted into the army, and the last letter they got was just before that gruesome battle. They have nothing left, as both of their parents and two siblings died from an illness, and beside finding their brother they also want to make a new beginning with the three of them. Their search starts at Carnton, but it doesn’t quite go as planned. The same day, a handsome new overseer of Carnton arrives, who is in fact a secret service agent looking for counterfeiters. However, Wade might be a little bit distracted because of a flaming redhead with no filter. Catriona is less pleased with his attention though, but they keep bumping into each other. And maybe chickens... I mean sparks are going to fly (bad pun, if you read it you know what I mean).

I really liked the historical setting of this book, though it is a little gruesome at times, war always is. The plot is very well paced, as you follow two people with different goals, which always keeps you on edge. I have to say I didn’t really like Catriona’s personality, her tendency to keep the truth from her sister bugged me, and also her sister Nora was really annoying... I don’t know how people put up with her! But their story is very intense and heart breaking and I kept wondering if everything would turn out alright. And Wade is a very kindhearted and intelligent man, and I love him!

The plot twists were very well timed, and I loved how the secrets between them were handled. I wish I could say more, but spoilers, but I love the originality. The spiritual message about trust was very powerful and the end was action packed and riveting and perfect.

I received an e-arc but it hasn’t influenced my opinion.

This book worked its way into every fiber of my being! The characters were fantastic and felt like family. My emotions were electrified with each page and I felt it to my very soul. The history written within these pages came to life and it was if I was standing watching everything play out. The mystery, romance, and danger weave together a story so great that it captivates you from page one. This is frankly some of Tamera Alexandra’s best work! Once I finished the book I had to sit and just ponder on it and mourn what our country went through during that time. This is a book that will stick with you for days, incredible read!

Colors of Truth was a delight to read as is anything written by Tamera Alexander. I don’t think anything that I have read by Ms. Alexander has been anything less than stellar. Her characters are richly drawn, plotlines solid, and the history of all of her novels never leaves the reader less than wowed by how she draws in the reader, and yes, you are right there with the characters experiencing exactly what they are going through.

I enjoyed this historical fiction filled with action and secret agents during a period where emotions were still very high and on edge.

Catriona with her fiery personality which fits her Irish red her and accent and her 7-year-old sister who was just as strong and stubborn, was a favourite leading lady. I enjoyed the way she and Wade met and all the interactions thereafter.

This was a gripping tale while we travel with Catriona in her journey to start new after the loss of her family and in search of her twin. I liked that she remained strong and sure though others judged her on appearances.

I listened to the audiobook which was well delivered.

Colors of Truth
By Tamera Alexander

This is a wonderful historical fiction read set in 1866 Franklin, Tennessee that follows the journey of Irish immigrants and based on the history of Carnton that once served as a Confederate hospital.

Catriona O'Toole is in search of her younger brother Ryan as she travels across the ocean with her seven year old sister Nora with the money sent over by their brother Ryan. Throughout the search, they find themselves at a loss in a new country, and even getting mixed up with some counterfeit operation, where Catriona finds Wade, an undercover government operative.

I thought that the writing was fabulous and did keep me absorbed into the time period. The detail in the writing was beautiful and I find that the relationship of the characters were done wonderfully with great background that really adds to the story line.

This was a great read I enjoyed and recommend.

Tamera Alexander if one of my favorite authors, if not THE favorite. She is an outstanding writer and did not disappoint with this book. The characters are so real with their flaws and struggles.....and Irish tempers ;) ........and I loved them all. Truth & honesty was woven throughout the story, refreshingly so. As with many of Tamera's other books, I gained a greater understanding of the Civil War and its suffering & heartaches. No spoiler here, but the end had my tears flowing. Just a spectacular book!

Second time through (again, lol) and I learned things about the aftermath of the civil war that I was pretty clueless about, such as counterfeiting and how there was still so much to be done following the end of the war regarding freeing people from slavery. This was an enlightening read and is totally worth it! You will learn so much from it and won't be disappointed!

This was an interesting book for me to read -- having lived my whole life in the south, I am quite a southern girl at heart. I've walked the battlefields at Franklin and Nashville and Stone's River, I've seen these plantations, I've seen the field where the mass grave was for the Confederates, and I've seen the conscripted farm that the Unions took over during the battle for their breastworks.

I found this quite an authentic and interesting description of the south. The writing was interesting, the storyline was solid, and the history was pretty much spot on.

I enjoyed the story of the O'Tooles, even if I cried more than a few times. Wade Cunningham was a bit brash at first, but I grew to like him, and was even egging him on with Catriona.

Catriona was a prickly young lady, but even with all her prickliness I grew to love her. Part of that was being drawn into her back story so well, and understanding what she had been through. The longing she had for her brother was touching, and it was a bittersweet aspect of the story.

It was interesting reading a different perspective from the southern one on the war -- and the one complaint I have about the story is that the southern people were given such a Yankee attitude about the war and about the causes of the war. Basically, slavery was the only reason the war was fought in the book, while history tells us that the war was fought over economics, and states rights versus federal rights. Slavery was actually a more minor issue in the war -- and one that I deplore as being wrong, and am glad that it was banished. But that wasn't the whole war and there hundreds of Union troops who were fighting who owned slaves as well. This book doesn't present that fact very well or accurately.

Even with that, though, I did enjoy the story. I've heard folklore about printing presses and counterfeiters right after the war ended, and it was interesting to explore a little-talked about aspect of my beloved southland. There were several plot twists that I need saw coming, and Nora's escapades and plain talking added an aspect of humor the the whole.

3.5 stars.

I've put off this book for a while, since the first and second ones were heavy reading. They left my heart feeling raw, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, I knew that I would need to be in the right mindset and appreciate going through the emotional ringer that is the Carnton series.

As always, the historical details and research that clearly went into this book was masterful. I also loved seeing the McGavocks and Tempy. References to the previous books' couples were also a nice gift to the reader. The backwards glance to the past has always been my favourite part of Tamera Alexander books. That and the redemptive story that is threaded through each and every story. It never fails to bolster my spirits and lift my face to the God who loves.

However, the part that I least prefer of TA's works are the MCs themselves. They are always flawed people, since being human is being flawed. I don't fault them that. But I really dislike lies, especially is they're perpetuated up to what seems like almost the end of the story. I suppose that's a personal preference, but there it is. There's also a fine line between determined and stubborn, and unfortunately in the case of heroine, she takes it one step further to being downright rude. I understand the motivation and emotion behind it, but it kept happening again and again. I guess I just found her kind of abrasive. And her little sister? Ooh wee. It was hard to read about all her lies, selfishness, and manipulative nature too.

Overall, I loved the redemption story and ultimately the HEA. However, there was a heap of sadness too so maybe I wasn't entirely in the right headspace for this. This was some lovely writing, had a beautiful message, and I'm looking forward to Nora's story. Maybe someone in her life will give her what for. LOL.

Catriona! Apart from the fact that I love her name, she was one of the most formidable female character I've read. She and her spunky sister were forces to be reckoned with. I enjoyed reading about the truth and they honor abided by. Life had not been fair to her but she took it in stride and never gave up. My heart went out to Wade, filled with honor and a zest to do the right thing. The way he always sort to protect Cattie and Nora was so heartwarming.

I love the faith content of the book, it was so refreshing. I loved seeing how the characters or some of them always sort to stand for the truth no matter how it hurt. That was a trait worth emulating in this book.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This past summer our family took a trip to Nashville, but stayed in Franklin. My husband, being a Civil War enthusiast, dragged me to Carnton where we had a tour of the home with a very knowledgeable young lady, and to view the unbelievably brutal battle site outside the nearby Carter home. I say dragged because growing up in California, history had little to offer other than missions. But now that we live in Tennessee, history has taken on a depth I never knew. But it still feels like dragging, in an enjoyable sort of way.

Years ago I read the first book in this series, so Carnton was familiar to me. However, I paid little attention to the historical aspect other than the home was used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers.

This second book was of more interest because of our visit there. I can see the history. This was a significant battle not to be taken lightly. The story begins about 18 months after that, but it was still fresh in the minds of confederates of middle Tennessee.

The story around all this history is of Catriona and her little sister Nora. Just "off the boat" from Ireland, they are in search of their brother whose last letter was from Franklin. However, every bit of the money her brother sent her family (whatever was unused) was confiscated, leaving her with nothing and no where to live, and still unable to find her brother, Ryan.

The story also revolves around Wade Cunningham, an operative for the United States government seeking the counterfeiting ring around the Nashville area. A chance meeting of Catriona and Wade at the Carnton house with Colonel McGavock spurred a curiosity about Catriona for several reasons, reasons that continued throughout the book.

Characters —
Little Nora: A precocious child who’s no end of frustration for her sister, Catriona.
Tempe: Ex-slave for the Carntons, wise and discriminating. Has a serious distrust of Wade as she caught him in lies.
Catriona: Spunky, raised with an abusive drunk father, twin to the conscripted soldier for the south. Mistrusting of men in general.
Wade: Patient, charming, dedicated to finding truth.
The McGavocks: I seriously did not trust them. Proof of any innocence had to be verified in my book!

Faith element: Lovely. So much wisdom, scripture and prayers. Thank you for this, Ms. Alexander!

My only issue is with the typical guy noticing the girl's hips swaying, and the girl noticing how well the guy's shoulders filled out his shirt. I just wish these ploys didn’t have to be used to write in an attraction between two people, especially in a Christian fiction book. But, on a good note, it was a lot less than other stories I've read by this author, so there's that. 1/2 star down for that, but not noticeable in the star-rating given.

Extremely enjoyable book. I simultaneously read the Kindle version and listened to the accompanying Audible presentation. Kate Rudd was an amazing narrator for this book!

I’m waiting for the follow up book about grown-up Nora!

I have been to the Carnton Plantation and I have walked among the graves of the Confederate soldiers in the cemetery just taking shape in Colors of Truth. Tamera Alexander brings that history (and more) to life.

Catriona is determined and headstrong, Wade is intelligent and capable but also undercover. From their first meeting, these two are drawn to the other but both have their missions before them. The romance between them is a slow burning build to the satisfying conclusion.

There’s a touch of mystery with the counterfeiting as well as what happened to Catriona’s brother. And of course, there’s so much history infused in this book, the reader is transported to Franklin, TN in 1866 (a year after the Battle of Franklin highlighted in the first book of the Carnton series). But deep down, at its core, Colors of Truth is a story of acceptance and healing.

After a few chapters, I realized that I was too sensitive to read this book. it contains brutality, not in a graphic way, but in an emotional way, mirroring all the hurt that people carried around after the civil war.

I'm sure this is a good book for a lot of readers, but not for people like me.

Tamera Alexander always delivers a rich, detailed historical novel, and Colors of Truth is no exception.

The history of Carnton here on the page brings to life the aftermath of war in ways that I hadn't seen before. It's a year following the battle, and the bodies of the Union soldiers have already been exhumed and sent home to be buried, while the bodies of the Confederate soldiers--many buried too shallowly--are rising to the surface, and the federal government won't lift a finger to deal with them. Thus the McGavocks and local leaders themselves must raise the funds and provide the land for a cemetery. I can't imagine the work to exhume nearly fifteen hundred bodies and rebury them properly, keeping meticulous records on everyone that they could identify.

Of course, the main plot line follows Catriona and Wade and the counterfeiting, which is well-rooted in history as well. I very much liked Wade (once past his self-righteousness early in the story); he's a good guy, yet I really liked that he crossed Tempy early on and is forever in the doghouse with her--it just struck me as really funny. All the little ways Tempy shows her disapproval of him cracked me up. Catriona and her sister Nora were more challenging to like; both are hot-tempered and lacking in tact, which is fine when dealing with bullies but harder to stomach when being a jerk to someone who is legitimately trying to help and has personally done nothing to earn their disapprobation. When Catriona finally lets down her guard to be vulnerable, then she's a lot more likeable.

I have loved every book by this author, and this one was no exception. The sister relationship did bother me at times, but mainly because I have a 7 year old daughter, and I was just begging the older sister to be more understanding. But other than that, the story was so well-told. The characters were complex and layered, the setting was a perfect backdrop, the various storylines were all engaging.

Some tough topics were discussed, but with grace and discernment, not heavy-handed preaching.

Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I actually didn't finish this book. I went into it with high expectations, since I loved the first book in this series. It was great! This one was not. I didn't care for the characters at all. She was annoying and it got old hearing about how awesome he was and how many difficult cases he had solved. I kept reading until about half way, then I started skimming and eventually just gave up.

Absolutely loved this novel! Tamera Alexander did a phenomenal job painting a realistic setting in post-Civil War Franklin, TN with well-developed characters. She handled a very sensitive topic with grace, truth, and compassion. Highly recommend!
