Romantic Escapes #3

Cukrárna v Paříži

Rate this book
Vstupte a ochutnejte některý z dezertů. A dobře jí radit.

Julie Caplin also writes contemporary romance as Jules Wake.

Julie Caplin is addicted to travel and good food. She’s on a constant hunt for the perfect gin and is obsessively picky about glasses, tonic and garnishes. Between regular gin tastings, she’s been writing her debut novel which is set in just one of the many cities she’s explored over the years.

Formerly a PR director, for many years she swanned around Europe taking top food and drink writers on press trips (junkets) sampling the gastronomic delights of various cities in Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Copenhagen and Switzerland. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. These trips have provided the inspiration and settings for the trilogy, The Little Cafe in Copenhagen, The Little Brooklyn Bakery and the The Little Paris Patisserie.

I had read and mildly enjoyed Caplin's first two little romances in this City Bakes series, so I pre-ordered this one. Caplin's stories are part cooking/baking adventure, part travelogue and part romance. In the first story the author took us to Copenhagen, in the second to Brooklyn, and now here we are in Paris.

Ah, Paris! The City of Love and Light! But sadly underused here. This story has the trademark baking that can make your mouth water if you're hungry, but it has only a smattering of sightseeing in Paris, and the romance, if you'll pardon my French, sucked.

It's one of those "girl has crushed on brother's best friend for years" and now, all grown up, is thrown into his world when she, newly unemployed, goes to Paris to help him out when he, an up-and-coming chef, breaks his leg badly. She has dreams of making it as a pastry chef some day, having given up on her dreams of becoming a chef because of an overwhelming disgust of and inability to work with raw meats, and sees a chance here to learn a bit from her former crush (okay, let's face it, her even-now crush).

But this guy treats her like dirt from the moment she arrives in Paris. Doesn't appreciate a thing she does. Overreacts to everything. It's always about him, him, him. He's a jerk, jerk, jerk. I do not care how much his leg hurts. Not an excuse for being unkind and inconsiderate. Jerk of the Year title goes to him without contest, in spite of all the other jerks I have encountered in other romances lately.

The only thing that makes life in Paris bearable for our heroine is the new friends she makes while there. Bonding with new acquaintances is something Caplin throws into all her books and she does a good job with it, if you like that kind of thing. I personally would prefer a bit more romance and a less self-centered hero in this particular entry. And that whole "best friends don't date each other's sisters" taboo, which I've never really understood, is used unconvincingly as an excuse for being a jerk here.

Three and a half stars.
The youngest of four siblings, Nina is more than a little fed up with her brothers looking out for her and telling her what to do. When given the chance to move to Paris and help run a patisserie course for 7 weeks, Nina is off like a shot. The only problem is it means dealing with high flying chef Sebastian Finley. Not only is Sebastian, her brother Nick’s best friend, he is the one Nina has had a crush on since she was a teenager. Until she made a fool of herself. Since then they clash as he treats her as just Nick’s annoying little sister. Through the patisserie course Nina not only discovers skills she never knew she had, but she encounters several people who become important in her life. Friendships and a plan develop to save the run down patisserie. But Sebastian’s plan is to make it into a bistro just as soon as the seven week course is done.
This is a sweet novel. I liked Nina and I liked most of those who came along to the patisserie course which included Maddie, the older woman Marguerite who remembers the patisserie as it used to be years ago, and the recently married older couple Peter and Jane. For various reasons Sebastian took a bit longer to warm to as did Nina’s brother Nick. I’m not a person who is into pastries and sweet treats, either making them or eating them, so in a way this book was a bit of a strange choice for me. However I enjoyed hearing about others making them and the care involved in producing such treats.
Really all I wanted was a light read that did not leave me feeling depressed at the end. So many grim and depressing book around at present. A novel of love, family and friendship this fitted the menu perfectly. Yes, it is a little predictable but it is a rather charming novel that leaves you feeling satisfied. My first book by this author I would be keen to try another when I want a nice, light read.

4 - "I think I'm going to like you a lot..." Stars!

We journey to Paris for the third book in Julie Caplin’s hugely enjoyable Romantic Escapes series. We step away from the characters in the previous two books who were loosely linked as well, and are introduced to Nina Hadley, youngest sibling in a large family, it’s time for her to spread her wings and make a few decisions about what she wants to do with her life.

"You have to be a sorcerer with sugar, a wizard with chocolate and a magician with flavor and fillings…"

When the opportunity to move to Paris for a couple of months to help out family friend and former teenage-crush; chef Sebastian Finlay is virtually dropped in her lap, Nina jumps at the chance of taking a break from her well-meaning but interfering family.

She was so over the crush she’d once had on him…

Baking has always been an enjoyable past time, so having the opportunity to be Seb’s right hand woman while he’s recovering from a broken leg, and assisting as he teaches a patisserie course that he is contract bound to offer with the purchase of the run-down Patisserie C. And never a more eclectic mix of pupils you will meet. Ranging from young to old and all with their own stories to tell, this is a book that offers up a lovely collection of characters.

"There are definitely some stories there, and I think some of them are rather sad."

I loved the first two books in this series and while The Little Paris Patisserie was absolutely no struggle to read, I didn’t quite find it as engaging as its predecessors, and it took me the whole book to work out why. For me it was because a large part of the story was spent with Nina getting to know a lot of the secondary characters, and doing things behind Seb’s back. Because of this the time she spent with Seb felt a bit few and far between.

How had she let herself fall in love with him all over again… What was wrong with her?

So much so that I didn’t fully feel their connection the way I have with the couples in the previous books, which is surprising seeing as this pair are the only ones who have known each other for any length of time prior to them getting together as a couple.

That-said it was still and enjoyable read, it just lacked a little of the sparkle its predecessors had. I was happy to see that Seb’s love-rival Alex will be getting his own book next in The Northern Lights Lodge, which is due for release in January 19, although reading the synopsis I kind of hope the publishers bring forward the date and release it before Christmas.

I was looking forward to this book , as I had enjoyed the previous two installments in the series but I was disappointed. It also took me unusually long to finish it. The best part of the book was the friendship part - a motley crew Nina finds in Paris who ultimately form a family of sorts, united by the common goal.

But. This is supposed to be a romance book - and yes, there is romance in it, except it is hard to enjoy it when both the heroine and the hero are not all that likeable. I also had a feeling that (especially with Nina's character) it was more tell than show, or maybe I was just too irritated with the book to appreciate her awesomeness.

Also, because this is my seventh or eight book by this author, I have begun to notice certain rehashed plot points. I guess this always happens when any author works according to an 'a-book-every-half-year' schedule but I cannot help but find it irritating. Finally, I would have given the book three stars, because I liked it, after all, but the editing (at least in my Kindle version) is atrocious, especially when it comes to punctuation. I hope the next book in the series will be better - better written and more carefully edited - the first three chapters included in this book look promising.

Julie Caplin, queen of feelgood.

The Little Paris Patisserie is another gem in this series, and one I am incredibly excited to be able to shout about!

My only regret with regards to reading this book is that I couldn't quite find enough time to sit and read it in one sitting, as it was just so, so so good!! Everytime I put it down the characters stayed in my head for hours, and I just loved Nina and Sebastian and all those on the patisserie course.

Ok there was a second regret that I wasn't reading this in a patisseries myself, as I wanted nothing more than to scoff all of the incredibly yummy food that was being produced, and I am partial to an eclair or two, and the macarons sounds fabulous too. Not to mention the visit to Ladurée and other patisserie's in Paris which all sounded so different but with gorgeous decors and sumptuous sounding treats.

I really don't want to tell you anything else about the book as its s so amazing and has some wonderful threads running though it, that starting with no info is good, as it will heighten your enjoyment, as you see how everything comes together.

I mean obviously there is Patisserie - both the place and the act of making delicious pastry and delicate treats, there is a sexy man who Nina knew well already as he is her best friends brother, there are all manner of fabulous people learning the art of patisserie from a course owner who is reluctant to be running it and a would have rather Nina wasn't his assistant.

Oh and its in Paris, which means we get to experience aspects of Paris from the point of view of someone who has never been, and her new found friends. There are secrets, discoveries, eclairs (did I already mention those), and some clear tension. Add in some great dialogue, a couple of really fun outings and of course fabulous writing and storytelling from Julie Caplin and you have a wonderful book.

I'm over the moon to see this isn't the last of this amazing series, and really looking forward to reading the next one already. If you love your romantic comedy books, or ones featuring tantalising food, then definitely make sure to add this to your TBR pile today!

Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Impulse for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Spriatelí sa s účastníkmi kurzu a ďalšími domácimi, vylepší svoje kulinárske schopnosti a zamotá osud cukrárne, z ktorej chce Sebastian urobiť moderné bistro.
👩‍💻 V knihe nájdete tú správnu dávku parížskeho klišé, romantiky i napätia vo vzťahu medzi hlavnou dvojicou, ktorej osud uhádnete už od začiatku, no od čítania vás to vôbec neodradí. V sérii Romantické úteky toho vyšlo už viac a asi aj kvôli tým pekným obálkam si postupne doplním aj ďalšie diely.

I should have known better than to preorder a book and read it as soon as it came out. This book was clearly rushed and did not spend anywhere near enough time in editing. It was replete with continuity errors and bizarre roundabout discussions that were excruciating to read and confusing as hell.

This author excels in writing friendships among diverse groups of people, and that skill was this story’s only saving grace. The family that the heroine creates for herself out of friends was warm and wonderful. The relationship between her and the hero love interest, on the other hand, was completely unbelievable. She could have substituted Sébastien for a roomba and it would have been equally convincing.

(But if you’re offended by smut you’re in luck with this book. The only real kiss comes at the very end, a page before the epilogue, and it was significantly less sexy than kissing grandma)

Still an enjoyable read but to me this one didn't have the same spark as the first two in the series (I did like the patisserie and cooking side from the start though). Another good point was following the youngest sister who feels her brothers protect her all the time. I think it took too long for Nina and Sebastian to be in the story romantically or even together in detail together. Once that happened the story got much better for me from that part. I liked Alex and am looking forward to reading about him in the next story.

nope.

I love a "girl has crush on older brother's friend" story but this one sucked. It's bad when both characters are unlikeable.

This guy is awful. I know he's in pain and is trying to keep her at a distance but seeeesh. He is an A.D.U.L.T. There is no excuse for him expecting the world to revolve around his royal pain in the ass highness and him treating other people like absolute dirt. People who are ungrateful and do not seem to care much for people are an immediate turn off.

And Nina. She does not seem to understand the concept of "not yours". Who the heck does she think she is and how little respect does she have for her long-time crush to do what she does.

Also the switch from "friends" to lovers in this series is so fast I'm getting whiplash.

What is up with the repeated use of the "not like other girls" thing in this series. I'm pretty sure it's happened in the other 2 books of this series where a guy has commented on the main character "actually eating food" unlike other girls who count calories and apparently sustain themselves on air and unicorn sparkles. This is either because of lazy/poor writing, a reflection of the author's mindset, a projection of insecurities, an intentional way of putting other women down to show the main character as being more worthy/desirable, or a way to show that the men in the books don't really have women in their lives or somehow choose to date women who have a poor relationship with food and their body. What does this say about the men considering that those women are implied to be high maintenance, snooty, superficial etc. It shouldn't have to be said but most women eat without counting calories every second of the day and women who are conscious of their calories aren't always "bad" people or "less than" other women.

I have really enjoyed Julie's other books in this series so was looking forward to this and certainly didn't disappoint me at all. She writes them so well that you really think you are there with them and in the country it's based in. It's heartwarming and romantic and fighting for what you want also about families and friendship and plenty about amazing cakes that I would just love to try. It's about fitting the last piece of the jigsaw to complete your life.
This is based around a little patisserie in Paris and Nina who is the youngest of four children her bigger brother always tell her what she can do. Her job has come to an end and one of her brothers has a friend in Paris called sabastian who has broken his leg and needs an assistant to help him run a patisserie course and her brother suggests she goes out. She doesn't agree to start with but soon changes her mind problem is sabastian is really been her secret love for years so will she be able to forget all that and work for him. She goes out and he is very difficult with her to start with and it's very hard running the course with her but she meets new friends and starts to settle. She goes in to the patisserie she starts to realise it really could make a go of it but sabastian has other ideas so she goes behind his back and with her friends they transform the patisserie back to life but she's starting to get close to sabastian and she hasn't said anything about what she has done and how will he react when he finds out she has been baking and selling her cakes and they have turned the shop around. Will he understand and realise she's done it for him and her to show she can do it or will he be angry. Will they find romance together or is it to late and what will happen to the wonderful patisserie in Paris.
A great read and worth more than five stars. Simply brilliant and got hooked straight away.

A ještě ji taková podpora "dusí".

Navíc (tady si nejsem jistá, jestli vinit autorku či překlad) odpalované těsto opravdu nekyne, a překládat panna cottu jako krém ze spařené smetany je... ehm... fakticky sice správně, ve všech dalších ohledech nikoli.

Takže tak. Paní Caplin asi nebude můj šálek čaje. :-(

The third book in the romantic escape series and it didn’t disappoint.

Julie has a lovely way of bringing a group of strangers together who become firm friends. I think this aspect of her books is what I like the best. I loved all the characters, although it took longer for me to warm to Sebastián, but eventually I did.

Through the wonderfully descriptive writing, you can close your eyes and imagine the wonderful patisseries and, if you’ve not been to Paris like me, the beautiful city of Paris.

I now want to visit Paris and eat cake and hopefully find somewhere special just like Patisserie C.

A definite ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.

This was a sweet (no pun intended) book! I haven't read the first two books in this series, but I'll definitely pick them up now. If you love a good chick-lit story, Paris, and/or pastries, this will be a fun read for sure.

There were some aspects to the book that kept me puzzling (ex: how do people become best friends that fast and decide to completely renovate a building without anyone finding out?), but I was reading for escapism and got it, so I'm not mad about it. Pairs well with GBBO and a cup of tea or coffee.

I finished off reading this beautiful and exciting book in 5 days. It was gifted to me as a part of book exchange therapy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

It will take you to the world of stunning locales in Paris and their evergreen variety of food decorated like a new bride in sophisticated restaurants.

What I loved:

#1 I loved Julie's writing style. I would say she writes so flawlessly, and you can easily blend with the characters as she takes you to their world word by word.

#2 Nina (The Youngest sister and spoilt lass) raised by brothers and her loving parents will remind you how in some instances in your life you craved for the same love but what makes it thought-provoking how she never felt like being loved this way. I hope you do.

#3 I loved the character of Sebastian as he knew trips and tricks to be a part of restaurant chains and putting all his arduous work to make his dreams come true.

#4 While some people don't like the love they receive, on the other hand, some characters have been dying to get just an ounce of it from others. Like the way, Nina came across someone.

Overall, this sweet book would be irresistible for you just my book reviews. (I am kidding).

Please get your hands on it and let me know how intriguing you have found it.

Bolo to mile citanie, no po nastavenych ocakavaniach z predchadzajucich 2 casti mi tu akosi chybalo chemie medzi hlavnymi postavami. Jeden mierne vasnivy bozk v celej knihe mi jednoducho nestacil.
