Dark Hunger is a fantastical, romantic manga based on Christine Feehan's Carpathian series.
I haven't picked up Christine Feehan's books before, but I have been wanting to for a very long time. When this book caught my eye (on sale!) at a local indie book store, I decided it was the perfect time to grab it! This was yet another book that got lost among my shelves and I just recently recovered it. There's no better time to pick up a manga than now - stuck at home, bored with lots of time on my hands.
Riordan is a Carpathian male, which is basically a vampire hunter who is also a vampire. He falls for his lifemate, Juliette, who turns into a giant jaguar. When Juliette released Riordan from being locked up and kidnapped, her friends and family are suddenly thrown into chaos as well. Juliette and Riordan must help save her buddies and somehow manage to stay mates as well.
This book is quick to read and quite easy. It has a lot going on so I didn't lose interest (I actually binged the whole thing). There's fantasy elements, romance and lots of action. It's not my favourite manga, but I did enjoy slipping away into this fantasy world. It does tempt me to grab one of Christine Feehan's books sooner rather than later, more so out of curiosity to see how this manga holds up to her writing.
Overall, I enjoyed it. This book is a nice break from reality.

This manga/novella combo was an immense delight for me. I always enjoy a good Feehan story. The manga art style was really fun, and the story didn't suffer for it. Would read another setup like this in the future!

I only "read" this for bookish bingo.
First graphic novel I've ever read. Not sure I chose the right one to be the first in this genre.
The illustrations weren't that good IMHO. The text was too little and I had to guess some words. The dude didn't do it for me, physically, hahaha. Only thing I liked was Solange's haircut.
The story didn't do it for me. Weird insta-possessive-love is not my cup of tea. The idea of total submission is not my idea of romance. I like my vampires being vampires and shape-shifters being shape-shifters. The 2 MCs are some sort of weird hybrids that can apparently do it all. Mmmyeah.
I'm sure the superfans would like this, I mean, this is #14 in a series, so they must love it. As for me, I wasn't so crazy about it. I give it 1.5 stars because 1 means I hate it in my scale. I didn't hate this but it can't be an OK 2 star read either. So 1.5 stars it is.
As for the reading experience, I will look forward to other graphic novels in my future because it's nice to add variety to my bookshelves.

This was a very unique way of reading Ms Feehan's Dark series and I have to admit I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and have picked it up more than once since I bought it!

Wow that was a rough read. It felt like a 2009 Wattpad shifter romance. 10/10 don’t recommend.

I ENJOYED IT!!
I loved Riordan and Juliette's story Dark Hunger. When I first read this graphic book/ Manga back in 2007: which is debatable to some reviewers. I had mixed feelings becasue I didn't know what to expect.
However, I loved the Carpathians and Riordan De La Cruz's character is right on the mark. Who doesn't love a Da Le Cruz!! Juliette made the perfect LifeMate. She is intelligent, beautiful, strong, brave and compassionate. Riordan is a De La Cruz what more is there to say, Tall, Dark, handsome and sexy. Riordan like all Carpathian males have tons of paranormal abilities. Fans of the Dark series will know exactly what I mean. It didn't bother me that it was graphic novel or Manga what every you choice to call it. It was a very good fast paced Adrenalin rush. The romance between Riordan and Juliette was very sensuous and romantic. Juliette you lucky girl snagged yourself a Da Le Cruz!!

When I was in middle school I was addicted to Christine Feehan's books and I'm so glad I got back to reading her stuff, may be reading out of order but that's okay. Riordan is possessive and bossy, "you will remain silent. I will kill anything that comes to your aid. Is that understood?" He's also a jealous man, "do not what me. You were thinking of another man." And he admits to being jealous and admits that he's probably gonna act like a ninny all the time, "yes, I am going to be an idiot and act jealous all the time. The idea of another man touching you, making love to you, makes me want to tear his heart out." Riordan may be a naughty boy but Juliette is naughty as well, "that's all right, you go ahead and think about my breasts. I'll be thinking of your very nicely put together anatomy." In my opinion this book was to short I wish it was longer.

Juliette goes into a laboratory in search of endangered animals to save. Instead she finds Riordan, her lifemate and tortured Carpathian male, held captive. They escape and he blows the laboratory up. Juliette tells him that she is concerned for her sister and cousin in the jungle, and the go to find them. When they go to her house they find that jaguar men, horrible cruel people, have kidnapped her family. They have to quickly find them before they do irrevocable damage to her only kin.
I liked how Christine Feehan packed so much information into one book. The artwork was also fantastic.

The usual I guess. I got to about sixty five per cent and realised that the only thing that had happened so far is that they'd met, realised 'Hey! You're my lifemate!' 'Well, damn. Ah well, okay then. Convert me so we can have kids!', and they'd done a lot in the effort of creating a kid. Only after then did the 'big twist/danger' appear. I'm not even going to comment on how ridiculously quickly I ended up reading this book (and it was the book, for some reason they only show the manga edition... - Dear me, I hate to wonder what the person drawing the book had to spend the majority of his time interpreting).

Disappointing at best. Honestly I grew up loving comics like Richie Rich and Casper the Friendly Ghost and thought I would like this too but this is terrible. The characters look so much alike from the profile that it is hard to tell them apart and the little bit of story there is with it reads like "Me Big Strong Tarzan, U Little Jane, Me Taking UR Blood Now, Yes Please I So Dizzy, Now UR Mine"
So my advice to all the Carpathian fans who are looking at this as an interesting addition to the series "Save your money and time. It is not worth it"

I found this at the library and was curious. Having read it, I found it just too condensed and tamed down. I'm assuming it's directed at a YA audience and not really to romance readers.
Not sure if this Carpathian series makes a good conversion for a manga series anyway, with its repetitive theme and different main characters. I would have thought a series with the same main leads and a wider universe would work better for this medium.

Did the summary writer actually read this book? Juliette being at the lab has nothing to do with activism... it kind of looks that way at first, but shifts about a third of the way in.
This was NOT my thing. (I can’t believe I’ve read it twice now.) Maybe it’s because it’s an adaptation - it feels very rushed, no doubt since they’re trying to fit a full, presumably 200+ page novel into a single comic book. I’ll have to read one of Feehan’s actual novels one day to compare. It makes some of the interactions between characters come across as very awkward.
Mainly, though, while I don’t mind some romantic content, this was way too cheesy for my tastes. It reminds me a lot of the worst of the Hallmark movies my mom loves and I suffer through for several months each year. (Seriously, they’re starting before Halloween now. At least have the decency to make Halloween movies. 😤) I found myself rolling my eyes more than a few times while reading.
Illustration-wise, the book is… not great. The opening image looks like they photoshopped an illustration on top of a computer generated pattern for the background. The female characters are drawn well enough, but the male lead is kind of awkward looking - very squarely proportioned.
It looks like there’s a heavy influence from anime art, as well - probably from the 70s or 80s, so it’s a little dated feeling. And a kind of… b-grade feeling to it? It reminds me of the religious manga I’ve seen, and the educational publisher’s classical adaptations. Or some of the American manga, how they can be very well drawn… but there’s just something slightly off off that sets them apart from the Japanese illustrators.
All in all, not for me - hopefully next time I run across it I’ll check my reviews rather than pick it up a third time. Fans of the book series might get more out of it, like when movie adaptations leave too much out and are more confusing than interesting.
The one thing I did enjoy was realizing that this series was - if not the origin, at least a large influence on - one of the soulmate tropes you see VERY often in fanfiction. In this case, that of seeing the world in black and white until you meet your soulmate and gain colour. Usually these days it’s been the other way around, seeing fanfic tropes finding their way into traditional publishing, like with Iseki manga or the omega-verse manga I’ve run across (I find these super funny, tbh. Of all the tropes…).

This read like a fanfiction and not in a good way. Just so many plotholes and not enough story building/world building. It was a quick read but not a good one.

I loved this book. To see the love story grow between Riodrian and Juliette. The fantasy elements, the manga was beautifully illustrated, and loved the ending. Loved the family of Juliette, Jasmine, and Solange. Plus, Riodrian too. ❤️ I will be reading more from Christine Feehan. Her note and the reason why she did the book. This was a beautiful way to honor her son that past tragically. 💙

SPOILERS!!!! Story takes place in the jungle. Juliette and Jasmine are attempting to infiltrate an animal research lab to rescue animals. The two women are sisters and the jungle is their home.As Juliette works on freeing the animals, she feels compelled to investigate a room with a locked door.
Behind the door lies Riordan, he is the youngest brother of five....the famous De La Cruz brothers. Similar to Jacques' story, Riordan was poisoned by a vampire and turned over to the ever present and troublesome vampire hunters of The Morrison Center for Psychic Research. Like Jacques, Riordan is unable to call for help for fear that he will lead his brothers to a trap. As a last resort, he planned to broadcast the components of the poison as he died. Just as Riordan begins to drift, he senses someone outside his prison.
Juliette is shocked at Riordan's condition. She works at setting him free and as she does so, Riordan is bombarded with colors and emotions. He quickly holds on to her as the last shackle falls off and drinks her blood. Like a caveman, Riordan hoists Juliette over his shoulder and runs through the lab, destroying everything within the building. Juliette is weak from blood loss and unable to escape.
What is surprising in this story is that Juliette is aware what Riordan is. She knows that he is Carpathian and reveals to Riordan that she has heard stories of him and his brothers, owners of several massive ranches in Brazil. I like how Juliette is another strong female who knows how to fight and deal with her lifemate. She is not one to be pushed around. Juliette needs her strength of character because they are being hunted by a powerful master vampire. Riordan talks about his brothers and how they were sent by Vladimer to protect South America from the vampire scourge. At present, Manolito and Zacarias (the oldest and most powerful of the brothers) are heading towards them to help and Nicolas and Rafael are heading to the United States to retrieve two orphaned kids related to the human family who help protect them and run the ranch during the day.
Juliette reveals to Riordan that she has a sister and cousin who reside in the jungle to protect women of the jaguar race. They are being hunted, raped and forcibly made to breed with male jaguar. The jaguar race are powerful in their own right and are psychic. Some of the women of the jaguar race have proven to be compatible with Carpathian males and can be safely converted. However, like the Carpathians, their race is also dying off. I love how Christine Feehan is expanding her written universe. It goes to show that the Carpathians are not the only powerful race on earth.
Readers should keep in mind that the jaguar race, first mentioned in Dark Symphony is important for the survival of the Carpathians and jaguar alike. As Juliette tells Riordan of the her race's plight, he cant help but think that perhaps the group that has hunted and hurt Juliette's family are in league with a vampire. Riordan believes that the master vampire plans to wipe out the jaguar race to stop the Carpathians from finding lifemates within that race. Juliette implores Riordan to understand that she needs to help her family survive.
Christine Feehan works her magic as she creates a dangerous situation for her characters. While Juliette and Riordan were getting to know each other intimately (I love how Mrs. Feehan toned down the flowery language when it comes to the sex scenes in this book), Jasmine is kidnapped by a group of jaguar men. Solange, Juliette's cousin tried to rescue Jasmine but failed when she was attacked by one of the males. Juliette and Riordan rush to help but are attacked along the way by the master vampire. Riordan almost loses his life but is saved by Zacarias using Juliette's vision. Riordan is forced to go to ground to heal and Juliette rushes to help Solange and Jasmine. During the battle, Solange and Juliette are gravely injured but they manage to rescue Jasmine.
Riordan is forced to convert Juliette and tells her that once she is strong enough, they can go and talk to her family. Despite their weariness, Juliette reassures Riordan that her family will come around and welcome him into the fold. I love how Mrs. Feehan reinforces the concept of family when Riordan reassures his lifemate that Solange and Jasmine are now part of the De La Cruz family and under their protection.
Despite being a novella, this story was well written and action packed. I love how Mrs. Feehan was able to include so much information into a short story. Readers should take heed on what they read in the story because it provides clues to the direction that the Carpathian saga is going. I loved this story!

Juliette, a panther shifter, and her sister Jasmine & cousin Solange are on a crusade in the Brazilian jungle to protect and rescue female panther shifters from a group of male panther shifters (who may be affected by vampires) who are kidnapping & raping female panthers in an effort to breed male panthers… (including their mother and aunt)…
Riordan is the youngest of the Brazilian DeLaCruz’s in Brazil… and he was tricked & captured by a master vampire, who has caged him, and injected him with a poison that interacts with an electrical charge that is breaking down his cells… he is close to death when Juliette is drawn to him when she is freeing other animals that have been captured… and he is amazed that as she enters the room he can see the color of her hair, and the color of blood on his hand…
Juliette frees him, and he immediately takes her blood… he takes her away from the compound… she knows something of the Carpathians as her mother told her stories, and she is conflicted between her feelings for him and her loyalty and commitment to her sister & cousin & their cause…
Juliette is the 1st Carpathian lifemate female that has had sex with others… as a panther, she apparently is a sensual, sexual creature that only ‘used’ men… but had sworn off any commitment to men… it is interesting mind set of Riordan as he struggles with the thought of her with others…
Sensual scene… as he comes to her after his 1st night from her and she leaves for her sister… and she has found a hidden grotto… she starts to imagine what she wants to do to him, and he imagines right back… until they are in each other’s arms…

Riordan is the youngest of the Brazilian DeLaCruz’s in Brazil… and he was tricked & captured by a master vampire, who has caged him, and injected him with a poison that interacts with an electrical charge that is breaking down his cells… he is close to death when Juliette is drawn to him when she is freeing other animals that have been captured… and he is amazed that as she enters the room he can see the color of her hair, and the color of blood on his hand…
Juliette frees him, and he immediately takes her blood… he takes her away from the compound… she knows something of the Carpathians as her mother told her stories, and she is conflicted between her feelings for him and her loyalty and commitment to her sister & cousin & their cause…
Juliette is the 1st Carpathian lifemate female that has had sex with others… as a panther, she apparently is a sensual, sexual creature that only ‘used’ men… but had sworn off any commitment to men… it is interesting mind set of Riordan as he struggles with the thought of her with others…
Sensual scene… as he comes to her after his 1st night from her and she leaves for her sister… and she has found a hidden grotto… she starts to imagine what she wants to do to him, and he imagines right back… until they are in each other’s arms…

Chained to a wall by the humans, caught in a trap surely set by a master vampire, Riordan was running out hope. Witnessing the men take more wild animals into the new research building, Juliette and her sister Jasmine needed to save the animals before they were tortured, finding not only animals but a man, nearly broke her heart. Binding themselves together meant one big family.
Several months ago I read the novella version of this story, so I knew what was going to happen. I know several people that like to read Manga books and wanted to see what they were so I thought I would start with a story I knew and liked by an author I liked. This was my first Manga a will probably be my last, apparently I am not the type that likes this version of story telling. The pictures did not seem to fill in the information that I felt was missing, the print words were choppy and seemed to lack all the emotion that I am used to from the Carpathian books. I was disappointed (maybe since I already knew the story) that it didn’t offer more of the information that is needed to really understand the Carpathian men and their need for the bond. If I had just read this one, I never would have liked Riordan or the cousin Solange. I am sure this kind of work appeals to some people, but for me, I need more information. I can create the pictures in my head a lot better (IMO) than Imaginary Friends Studios did.

I've read this comic again yesterday, but I have to say I didn't really enjoy it. This story was the first I read by Christine Feehan as a novella, but unfortunately this comic does not do it for me. The drawings were okay looking, a little too simplistic for my taste. Some shadowing looked awkward and some of the applied textures didn't fit.
What I didn't like at all was how the story was told in this comic. The deep feeling both characters had didn't get through at all. The initial reluctance of Juliette didn't convey her deep angst feelings, and Riordan came through one-dimensional and flat.
The whole thing looked mostly unfinished, unexplained and undesirable. Especially the conversion part of the story, one of the most important parts, was really badly executed. While I didn__t enjoy how Juliette__s conversion to a Carpathian woman was done, I did like the fighting scenes between the jaguars and the women. They looked fierce, to the point, and well choreographed.
Still, at the end of the day I didn__t enjoy this at all. It was mostly a bad investment and not worth it, but since I want to support the author I will not regret it completely. I guess I just have to enjoy the books even more and neglect the comics in the future. But this is just my personal opinion.

A tale of true love beyond your own species, this manga will definitely keep your attention!
Juliette is a shapeshifter. She lives her life as both a jaguar and a human female. She has feelings from both forms, but her jaguar runs the deepest.
Her life centers around protecting her cousin and her sister, who are also shapeshifters that live as both jaguar and human. But, true love turns her life upside-down, when she meets the Carpathian named Riordan, who swears that she is his *lifemate*. Lifemates are the equivalent of what we call soulmates. They become one in every way possible, and he promises to protect her life with his own…..
But, is that enough?

I liked how this story had alot of action, but never let it completely overpower the romance aspect of the story.
I didn’t like how Solange (the cousin) doubted Riordan at first, but I can sort of understand why she has such a fear of men and their power over women. I was glad that she came to accept him and his being with Juliette.
Sadly, the sister ended up playing a small role, and came across as being important to Juliette, yet unimportant to the story.
The artwork was not the best, but it was pretty good. I liked it.

I'm a huge fan of Manga and of Christine Feehan's Dark books so this was something I just had to get but after reading it *noting it took almost no time whatsoever and that was a huge let down* it turned to be quite lacking and even cheesy.
I'm familiar with the story as I've read it before but unfortunately it was executed very poorly in this manga. The art was ok but the character development , the dialogue and the action just seemed to fall very short and missed a lot of details. The characters were flat , cold and boring. There was a scene in this manga where Riordan gets angry at Juliette and accuses her of thinking of another man , this was never explained properly..like what was she thinking and why..I understand the scene because I read the book but for anyone who never read the book , this scene would be very confusing and lame. There's absolutely nothing to justify why this scene was done so carelessly or why the whole thing missed a lot of information and depth.
The Manga was lazy , careless and incomplete , I think it could have been much better than this if it followed the book's details and added a lot more pages than this. It's disappointing and adds nothing to the Dark books.

Taking a small break from the major vampire plot line to advance the jaguar plot line the readers learned about first in Dark Symphony, but this time with non-evil women who can shift.
The relationship happened super fast but don’t they all when it’s a novella? Riordan is so sweet and funny, I don’t know if it’s him being the youngest of five brothers or not but Rafael could use a few lessons on how to court your lifemate.
I would say that the reaction of Solange and Jasmine to Riordan was a little fast but it’s a short story so, things need to happen quickly.
Riordan is also a little different from others I’ve read about, he’s a little more laid back and teases her almost straight away instead of wondering when was the last time he was teased, even though he was tortured.
The manga version, or comic since it isn’t done like a traditional manga, is a great companion to have. Little things from the actual book have been changed but not major things.
The art is excellent, the characters are drawn so well that I can’t imagine them looking any other way and I don’t want too.
Having both the book and the manga gives the readers an excellent visual when reading other books, such as when Jasmine and Solange pop up again.

Really 2.75 Rating,
This review will be brief, since this book has already been thoroughly reviewed already. I didn't enjoy this installment as much as the first book in this trilogy, Insatiable Desire. Although this book was darker and grittier than its predecessor, I found it to be extremely predictable and too conveniently coincidental. I mean, I could see every move coming; it was as if the plot was transparent. I can usually handle very predictable books but there has to at least be an interesting plot to supplement. In spite of my feelings for this particular installment, I simply would like to know how the series ends. Therefore, I have decided not to scrap the series and will be reading the last book in this trilogy Forbidden Passion due out 4/2010; which will focus on Quinton's twin Dante, who supposedly was raised in the underworld.

I read the graphic novel first and I liked it. It obviously lacked the detail that one can get by reading the actual story (both storyline wise and steamy scene wise) After I read the graphic novel I wanted more of the details so I read the short story too it definitely shed more light on the plot that got lost in translation. I loved Juliette and her inhibition. The Jaguar's look like they're going to offer a wealth of lifemates for the Carpathians .. though I do feel bad for the one who gets Solange (Juliette's cousin) She's not going to go down to a male very easily. Riordan was in a tough situation and Juliette saved him so that was nice to have some role switching. I like that Riordan has brothers, I think I like seeing how their lives play out (looks like Rafael stars in the next one I'm Reading Dark Secret and the other two follow close behind) and how they can come to the aid of their siblings. Any-who - I enjoyed this short story very much.

I like Feehan's books for the most part. I picked this book up because I was a fan of manga & I figured that this would be a fun read. Boy was I wrong! First off, the artwork is terrible, even by the standards of US manga artists. It's like they didn't even try to coax one of the more talented artists to illustrate it. I also think that while an illustrated/comic format of Feehan's books would be entertaining, manga was not the right way to go.
The storyline also suffered greatly at the hands of the "creative" team that shortened the storyline & decided on the illustrations. The storyline is chopped up & is rather plodding & boring. I have to admit that I got maybe 1/2-3/4ths through the book before I finally just got too bored to finish & skipped to the end of the book. It's definately not worth the money. It's a shame that this was so poorly done, since I would love to see a decently done manga or comic version of her books.

I came across this book while I was living in Tennessee a few months ago and decided to give these immortal alpha-males another chance. I’ve had lots going on for the last few months and haven’t gotten around to reading this until now (having your power knocked out leaves you with lots of time…).
Needless to say, I just can’t get into the Carpathian stories even in graphic novel format. I really can’t even articulate what it is about them I don’t like but something about them rubs me the wrong (high possibility of the whole "Me Tazan, You Jane, You now belong to me" feel to them) way so this will be my last attempt. However, I’m not bumping Feehan off my radar just yet. I have another title of hers, Hidden Currents , and I’ll wait to see how that goes first.

You can probably see how much I like Christine Feehan's books based on all my high ratings. Big fan. But, I didn't like this one at all.
I don't read comic books, not appealing to me. This book is basically a comic book. The illustrations are okay I guess but the clipped dialogue is bad. If I hadn't read previous Carpathian novels I wouldn't have followed what was happening with any understanding. Just questions.
All it did was make me wish there was a full book about Riordan and Juliette. It's the first Carpathian book where the female lifemate is neither human nor Carpathian, but something else paranormal. That would have been refreshing to READ about.
