The Mate Index #6

Heart of the Agraak

Rate this book
Agraadax was shaken by recent events and the breeding facility closed, but it has done little to ease the simmer of unrest rippling through Agraak society. In Aminae, one of the dome cities scattered on the few arid patches of land of the swampy planet, factions are rising against the cruelties of the upper raniks that rule their society. Kaede is a male devoted to the cause. His entire life has become focused on easing the suffering of his people. He has no time for anything else in his life. A human give into his care is the worst kind of distraction…a distraction that promises love and pleasure. Frankie arrived on Agraadax masquerading as man. No one knows, not even the men with whom she serves in the Intergalactic fleet. For five years, her sole purpose has been bent on discovering any information that she could regarding the fate of her twin sister, Alisha. When Frankie is forced into hiding with the aid of an Agraak male in the midst of a rising revolution, she is put on a path that may change everything for both of their species. Fighting side by side with by a male who stirs her passions and makes her question everything she thought she knew; Frankie begins to wonder how she’ll ever leave Agraadax without him.

The lengthiest Mate Index book to date, this is also—in my opinion—the strongest one of the batch. Watching Sander's writing abilities and story telling style evolve over the year has been enjoyable to witness. Though still plagued with the editing issues that often accompany indie-published work, they are a minor distraction that do not muddle the meaning of the story or derail the reader. (But seriously, S.J., if you need another proof reader to catch typos, I will happily be your gal.)

Finally, we get a story told from the POV of the Agraak—one of the big villains of the Mate Index universe. We have previously known them as oily toad men with a taste for hyper-aggression and rape. With the exception of an Agraak merchant and her mate we met in a previous story, they have all been nasty pieces of work. But. It turns out that the majority of the Agraak are not the issue, but rather the upper echelons of Agraak society, those most removed from the natural state of their species. In this story we follow Kaede, a male of noble birth who shuns the expectations of his class and goes on a personal mission to help those most in need: the humans in the dreaded breeding facility and the Arobi slaves. When Intergalactic Union forces are taken by surprise during an exercise to free human breeders, a female human soldier needs to be safely taken from the city and stashed in the swamps until rescue can be coordinated. No one is better suited than he is, and of course he accepts the task.

Frankie would do anything to find out what happened to her twin sister Alisha, one of the 100 women the Budo tricked into becoming breeding slaves for the Agraak. Because of the restrictions Earth has placed on single young women, she goes to great lengths to enlist as a man and maintain that ruse. Finally reaching Agraadax, Frankie finds herself in a situation she wasn't fully prepared to navigate. Soon she finds herself on the run in the Agraadax swamp with a male who is the opposite of what she was prepared to expect from the planet's inhabitants.

This is a good solid read all around; it's hard for me to find much to quibble about. We get a heroine who is strong and determined but also vulnerable. We get a hero who is principled, strong, has feelings other than anger or lust, and who doesn't look to solve everything by going into SMASH mode. Because of the length, this one burns a little slower than previous installments, which only adds to the satisfaction of seeing the two get together. There is an insta-attraction element at play, but both are level headed individuals with agendas they have their sights on. All of the characters were pretty well handled, even the super self-absorbed and vapid noble ranks in the dome city. Lots of adventure and a clear plot that is more polished than the earlier installments in the series round this off.

This is one to read—and can be read as a stand-alone without too many problems. It's worth spending an evening or two with.

It took until book 9, but we finally know what became of the other 89 human women from the first Mate Index book, and their story arc officially gets resolved.

The bonus short story at the end is also really sweet. I was heartbroken knowing what happened to Alisha, and she could not have been rewarded with a better mate. Those swamp-dwelling Agraak? Total sweethearts.

A story about love and new beginnings. Where the main characters are trying to help a world ruled by the greedy and powerful. We get to know a species that was always portrayed as the antagonist in the series; is nice when an author shows us that not everything that we see is the reality.

The best so far and this instalment felt far superior to its predecessors I honestly wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did mostly I think because of it centring around the Agraak and let’s face it they haven’t exactly endeared themselves. But I really enjoyed it a lot. This story takes place on Agraadax and here we have the fallout from the intergalactic council and its many charges levelled against the Agraak. I found this a deeply emotional experience and the fate of the human breeders is showcased here in such stark brutal reality.

Frankie Martins joined the intergalactic forces on the account of her twin sister. She was one of the original females stolen by the Agraak and used for breeding. With her fate, unknown Frankie is determined to discover what happened to her be it good or bad and it’s with this in mind that she disguises herself as male and enlists.

Kaede is of the noble class but not of their mind. He hates what his people have become and works tirelessly to address the little things he can do. He also stealthily assists in a secret rebellion even going as far as to infiltrate a breeding facility incognito to record atrocities and he is horrified at what he discovers hidden inside the walls.

When the intergalactic forces arrive to seize all human females from the planet by order of the council chaos ensues and Frankie’s disguise Is compromised. With Agraadax descending into war fleeing into the swamps with Kaede as her protector is her only option but as the two descend deeper into the swamps they find themselves unexpectedly connecting despite it initially being the last thing either was looking for.

Kaede is all quiet reserved male I liked that about him. He’s also protective and possessive and once he begins to unwind with Frankie he’s a complete sweetheart. I definitely loved the primality of their physical intimacies and these two sure had plenty of chemistry together. Frankie is a very strong female who knows what she wants she is definitely capable and isn’t a drama queen I liked how comfortable she was in her own skin it was refreshing. I appreciated that she judged others by their own actions giving Kaede the benefit of the doubt in regard to his species and their vile actions.

This story has a revolution of the lower masses rising up and taking back control from their noble overlords. The majority of Agraak don’t agree with what their nobles have been doing but have had little voice. Well, now they take back control aided by the swamp tribes who had withdrawn aeons ago from the sparkling dome cities.

We learn the fate of Frankie’s sister and my heart broke for her ordeal and suffering and we also spend time with Frankie’s squad and they were such an interestingly diverse bunch. I’m also loving the fact that we are getting future stories from them as well. This really was a fantastic read that I enjoyed immensely and that small inclusion at the end warmed and helped heal my heart.

This one was soo good!
Frankie Martins was a Intergalactic Union soldier that we've met before and was introduced as a young man. It turned out that Frankie enlisted as a man and hid her true gender for five years, because she had to find her twin sister. Her sister Alisha was one of the 100 women tricked by Budo and sold to Agraak as breeding slaves. After five years Frankie was finally going to Agraadax to rescue her sister with a whole lot of Union soldiers. Sadly it wasn't enough, they were overwhelmed by the numbers of Agraak warriors that were underreported to the Union for years.
Kaede was one of the noble Agraaks, but he didn't quite fit with them. He hated the policies of the higher classes of society and was tirelessly working on helping the poor lower classes. He was looked down upon by his own mother, because of his coloring and a tail that civilized Agraaks bred out of their traits. His mother was an awful female who wanted him to get mated to an equally awful bitch that insisted they have to get a hatchling before she agrees to the mating. Of course she wouldn't be carrying their eggs, so they drag Kaede to the breeding facility filled with enslaved humans.

I loved Frankie and Kaede as a couple. They were good for each other, both strong people with a purpose that didn't even know they needed someone to love and cherish. They weren't looking for a mate, but it was the best thing that happened to them. And I loved that Kaede shown a different side of the Agraaks, he was bigger than all of them we saw in the earlier books, yet he never hurt Frankie, even in the mating frenzy when he felt the need to scratch and bite, he clawed around her and carefully held her skin between his sharp teeth. Our man bit her only once to give her a mating mark (maybe he should have waited with that, but I understand the heat of the moment and all that), and he didn't do it savagely like the assholes in the breeding facility. Oh, and the tribal Agraaks were awesome!

From previous books in the Mate Index series I have come to despise the Agraak because of the cruelty they had carried out against the human females after abduction. Kaede is not your typical upper class Agraak male. He desires to gentle the suffering of his fellow Agraak and works towards that end. He hates the mate his mother has chosen for him and when he has the opportunity to visit the breeding center where the human females are kept he takes it. He gathers evidence against his people and the atrocities they practice. Frankie arrives on Agraadax masquerading as a man with the Union troops who were sent by the Intergalactic Council. She is searching for her twin sister, Alisha. When the Intergalactic Council's plans go wrong, injured Frankie is rescued by a priest. Kaede takes Frankie deep into the swamps searching for the lost clans rumored to still reside there. An attraction they cannot deny blooms, but in the face of the coming revolution will it survive?

Heart of the Agraak drew me in from the very first chapter! Sanders has redeemed the Agraak for me. I hated them before this book, but I loved this story! Kaede and Frankie are unlikely allies and unlikely mates, but the secrets they discover in the swamp may help them to fuel a revolution for the Agraak race. Fabulous story! You really don't want to miss reading this one! 5 stars

What a fascinating story!
This author has a talent for making the most unusual looking characters very appealing! The world-building is excellent, the characters come to life on the pages.
In a previous Mate Index story, the situation on Agraadax seemed pretty dismal. Too many people scraping by while a few elite raked in the benefits. Human women, in particular have been treated as disposable: use and toss. I love Kaede! I wasn’t sure I would: the Agraaks overall have not proven to be nice, let alone lovable. But he’s a genuinely good guy working for the betterment of the underserved population. Amid the chaotic battle that ensued when the Intergalactic forces landed, Kaede rescues Frankie. Watching the two of them develop their relationship is a delight. “You are in my heart, agishi” - what a beautiful way to say ‘I love you.’
The outcome of this story is satisfying on many different levels. I foresee a new era for Agraadax. I’d like to visit some of the characters we’ve met here again.

I was pretty sure I was gonna hate this book based on the summary. But this one was very interesting and I loved the expansion of the overall lore into the Agraadak planet and culture that was teased in previous books.

I also like that the main guy is a #notlikeotheragraaks lol. But that made him less hateable from the get go. I really liked Frankie's personality and her character development, plus we get to see a more intimate look at the Union ship's crew dynamic. Although not a huge fan of the pack preclaiming her but I think that was because she was the only female in their unit or something.

I did like that the tribe Agraaks were basically Ice Planet barbarians but reptile version lmao.

I wasn't a big fan of the epilogue where we see the fast forwarded POV of Frankie's sister and her mate since it obv didn't get to where Frankie met her sister. But it did make for an interesting plot point and twist when we discover she isnt dead uwu

Overall a good sci fi smut that has decent writing, plot, and characters.

So Good, really really Good

After all the bad shit that you read and feel towards the Agraak it was hard to believe they would get a love story. With an open mind I settled in to see how they could possibly be redeemed. SOAB she did it. Of course the whole planet couldn't be filled with rapist monsters. This was so well done though, that even though most of the book takes place in my most hated environment (Sweltering swamp) it still was an awesome adventure and I refuse to spoil it by giving away to many details. Just know there will be the following.
A Cross dressing intergalactic soldier
Lots of different species,
Agraak in all shades of green, some with tails & some without. A Lethal fuzzy pink pet, Rescued woman, Stuck up Royals, Swamp monsters and lots of hatchlings. Lastly, All mating hunts are not created equal. Frankie and kaede , Alisha and Gorun are truly heroic stories of survival and healing. DanaLynn

Deep and surprising.

Frankie and Kaede story is wonderful. The ups and down of Frankies search for her twin were fascinating to read. I felt like I was an invisible passenger to this book. Which is a testament of how well the author wove the story.
Glad she revised her original version of the characters because they are great as they were written.
Would love to revisit this world and the characters in the future. Maybe one of the hybrids that went to earth with their Mothers? And one of them that were taken off planet. Would be interested to see what author could do with one of the lab children that did not know they were part human finding out and going to trace genetic mother history.

A long journey to peace

This is book nine and a full story for our main characters and their friends and families. This book truly will take you through the trials of Kaede. He is such a patience male with his mother and the female that his mom is trying to force on him. They do not recognize who Kaede really is. He is an alpha and fair minded male. He demands respect but in a way to garner respect. Kaede is a big male for his people because he has the mindset and qualities of his father’s people. Kaede is against those Agraads that want to enslave, torture, or breed people/humans against their will. Kaede is working to bring attention to this practice so that it will stop. This is where Frankie’s (human female) and Kaede’s story begins and grows. Read On!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 **3.75 Stars — redemption and revelation done right!**

I’ve got to hand it to S.J. Sanders — she never shies away from flipping the script. The *Agraak*, who were once the terrifying bad guys, turn out to be an oppressed people just trying to survive. Talk about a twist that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about this world!

Frankie and Kaede made a great pairing — balanced, believable, and with enough chemistry to melt through those thick alien exosuits. I loved watching their bond grow amid the tension and the beautifully layered world-building that Sanders is known for.

The universe of these stories just keeps expanding, and I can’t wait to see where she takes this next. I’m ready for more reveals, rebellions, and romance — bring on the next book!

Worth Reading

This is an adventure with romance. The Agraak in power squelched the others underfoot to keep their power and made other sentient races their slaves. The Intergalactic council has sent soldiers to look for signs of the slaves but the entire group is quickly overpowered. Kaede, a member of the ruling class worked to change things and was tasked with helping the female human to escape. This is a story of finding hope in the worst of circumstances, of fighting to create a better world for all of coming together for a common cause in spite of differences and finding your true mate.

Easy read

I like Kaede he seemed laid back kind of guy who's supper power was to be able to zone out when annoying people such as his mother or unwanted attention from other women. I also liked Frankie military women always give off being strong mentally and physically and I loved how Kaede said her name it was cute Frahnkee. Of course I loved the epilogue especially when there years later not months or days later. The only issue I had personally it was a little long I'm use to alien romances being 3 or 4hr reads this book was about a 8hr read. I also loved that I could start on book 9 in the series and not be lost in what was going on.

Slow to start

Once you get past the first chapter which is really skew, the story picks up and starts at a steady pace. Frankie is out with the galactic forces masquerading as a man so she can get the opportunity to search for her sister. She meets an agraak who agrees to keep her safe and together they set out across the swamp.
In this novel, we get to see a different side to the Agraak society that we're the ultimate villains in the first novel of the series. A good story, not the best in the series but good.

Another hit!

I really have enjoyed everything that S.J Sanders has put out but this one is the best so far. She made the "villainous" species loveable and sexy. Through the other novels in this series they are the bad guys stealing human females to procreate, raping and scaring all the females. In this book we find out that what we have seen is not the true behavior of the species. I loved Frankie and Kaede and their story.

Heart of the Agraak

This is a gratifying take on a species reviled by the Galactic forces for their horrific treatment of human females as breeders. A large portion of the Agraaks used many sentient species as slaves. Then along came Kaed and some of his like-minded rebels who worked from the fringes to stop the mistreatment of others including their own lower caste citizens. Frankie was an escaped woman and one of the captured laboratory breeders that Kaed saved.

Loved it just like each and every book I have read by this author. This one gives you another look at the agorak (spelling?) from a different perspective. Instead of the kidnapping, raping bastards they usually are portrayed as this shows the decency of the population and how they adopted the freed breeders and stepped up to fix things.

Ok

This book was ok but unfortunately it was similar to many other books . It read interesting enough although it seemed to be repetitive at times . Also ...even though this isn't super important , the picture on the cover looked only slightly like the main male was described. They looked more alien and less human . Just saying !

I Love These Books!

I highly recommend these books! I’m excited to see where the stories go from here. I read that she’s not gonna put out as many books in 2020 and that makes me really sad because I’ve kind of binged them. What in the world do I read next???! I loved Mogwai in this one!

I truly enjoyed this novel. The sweet steamy relationship that Kaede’s mating Omar created was irresistible, I couldn’t put the book down. The world building was vibrant and all encompassing. Kaede’s interesting equipment was a great addition. I was really impressed with the creativity that went into this book. Looking forward to Grish and Borth’s story.

WOW! This author made me love a hated Agraax. In the past story I couldn’t fathom the Agraax to be kind. She did it. I loved Kaede and Frankie! The world building was fabulous. Seriously I would like to sit down and talk to this author about how she comes up with these things. I feel like this was her best yet. I highly recommend this book.

The Potential of a Tail

LOL Heart of the Agraak is a solidly good SFR. I almost put this book down after the first couple of chapters because Kaede read like a wimp-a-bella caving in to his mother’s manipulations. Glad I didn’t. The book has aliens with tails, strong heroines, tension, action, and sweet heat. Enjoy!

it was cute

I liked learning more of the Agraak people. I just liked a lot of this book, Frankie was what I liked to see in a heroine- she was tomboyish-not afraid to get dirty with the guys. I enjoyed the interactions with her squad mates. Just overall the story was good, it was a enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more of this series

A lovely wrap

I adore all that I've read from S.J. Sanders and have zero complaints and all praise for the wrap to the Agraak arc. I was uncertain how this would proceed with the seemingly 'evil' Agraak and find only shear delight!
