Aya Kanno's take on the War of the Roses continues with the coronation of Henry VI. The art shines but the focus is, as always, on Richard's inner monologue as the political and social scene continues to change in a turbulent England.

Story: Richard's thoughts are never far from Henry even as he endeavors to save his brother Edward from Warwick's clutches. Disguised as a woman, he will do the impossible - but at what cost? Warwick, meanwhile, knows he has a malleable pawn in the form of Henry and quickly moves to see him crowned. But all Henry wants is peace - and more of his savior angel, Richard. Anne, Warwick's daughter and Richard's former betrothed, finds herself married to potential king in exile Edward. But the tide is turning on both the weak Henry and the frustrated Richard. And as Richard continues to straddle the male and female (while belonging to neither), he must navigate a confusing web of emotions and desires - both his and of those who desire him or desire to use him. Henry's fragile grasp on reality begins to wane....

While Kanno sticks close to the facts, of course there are many liberties taken. Obviously, we aren't going to be given a true historical rather than a very melodramatic look at the era. But as entertainment and also a glimpse of history, Requiem does quite well. Henry's weakness, Richard's precarious position, the continually shifting political situation, Edward's opportunistic nature - it's a very interesting look at the end of the War of the Roses (one that would see the beginning of the Tudor line, leading to Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I).

I've found it a good idea to keep Wikipedia handy to help further define the historical characters. It can get a bit confusing but the extra bit of research really brings the whole situation to life. That said, since this is an emotional story focusing on Richard, it's not necessary for the enjoyment of the series. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Vol. 1 ★★☆☆☆
Vol. 2 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 3 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 4 ★★★☆☆

The infiltration sequence is suspenseful and really stresses me out. We also get a glimpse into Henry's backstory and his retreat into religion finally makes more sense. I get why Richard is falling for Henry now. His mother calls him a demon child and others take advantage of him because of his status; Henry is the only one who actually likes him for who he is.

Kanno has truly captured the flavor of Shakespeare in this series. Richard's grapple with feelings of heartache and despair are made so poignant and real, I can't help but experience heart pangs in those emotional moments. How dare the mangaka toy with me, an unsuspecting reader, like this! How dare!! And yet, I come back for more and turn the pages ever so voraciously. Keep them coming, Kanno. Keep them coming.

Not quite as riveting as Volume 4, yet Richard shines as the dark hero, taking on an active role in donning women’s garb and doing all he can to save his brother, Edward IV. No wonder so many people (including me) regarded this as true devotion to Edward in more historical texts.

Not so in this manga, but it’s an impressive display, nonetheless.

Prince Edward of Lancaster takes on quite the dualistic role, aiding Richard in his rescue of his Yorkist rival, yet seizing Anne Neville as his Lancastrian bride. All of this is consistent in achieving his own goals, taking Richard for himself.

Henry VI, who started out as the sad, tragic puppet of both his wife (Margaret of Anjou) and Warwick) rails with surpising vitality and heroism at the end. This recovery is quite in character with how Kanno-sensei has developed him. He ends up looking after Richard during Richard’s more vulnerable moments in the story.

Richard’s last line made me cry. Considering what happened historically and in Shakespeare, I tremble, knowing how this will end, yet wondering how Kanno-sensei is going to interpret these events.

Warwick’s reluctant shift in loyalties to more blatant opportunism was dark, dramatic, punctuated by a layer of reluctance which gave him depth. Edward IV was his creation. He’s reluctant to break what’s built, although he’s feeling the necessity to do so in pursuit of power.

George, Duke of Clarence is less comedic in his lust for power than I perceived him to be historically. Far more dramatic as well. Isabel, George’s wife, takes on much of the comedic tooth knashing, when she realizes she’s not going to be queen.

Margaret of Anjou and Elizabeth Woodwille continue to plot and scheme, remaining consistent to their goals, driving the overall plot forward.

Overall, the fifth book lived up the rest of this exquisite shoujo manga take on a period of English history which has fascinated me since I was 12 years old.

Aya Kanno-sensei has taken me on quite the mind-bending journey. I’m both eager and terrifed to see where she’s going with this.

Yet another fantastic volume, and well worth the wait. This volume sees Richard torn by more than just his desire for a throne. We see Richard trying to come to terms with the body he was born into, the one that he's been told is demonic.
A particular line in this volume actually led me to understand Richard better, and although it's painfully obvious, it really helped me step into Richard's shoes. The line I'm referring to is this one: "Once he knows I'm a demon, I'll be all alone." It really highlights Richard's character, and how the way he was treated by his mother has destroyed specific elements of his character. One, he is unforgiving in what he believes are his shortcomings, namely, his body, though he never had any choice in the matter. Second, his feelings for his body have mutated into a secondary fear, which is his fear of being really, truly alone. Though he grew up a little isolated from his family, and therefore knew how it felt to be alone, the loss of his father has made him realize that there are ways in which he can be even more alone, so the prospect of losing the one he's fallen for now fuels one of his biggest fears. The second half of this volume was truly eye-opening in learning more about Richard's fragility as a character.
I also really enjoyed Edward (Lancaster) and Catesby in this volume, who were both completely stellar in driving the plot and aiding our hero.
Can't wait for volume 6, though it pains me to no end to have to wait til May to read it.

Requiem of the Rose King follows Richard who is the third son of the Duke of York and living in a world where the Wars of the Roses is on the precipice of beginning.
This series just gets better and better as you keep reading it. I really loved this volume and thought it was a pretty good volume for the development of the characters in this story and moving the players into their spots for when things really start to go off.
I really liked seeing Richard really taking action in this volume and doing what he could to try to help his brother out of the predicament he ended up in the last volume. We're really starting to see Richard evolve into the person history knows him as but this also takes a twist on his character. The revelations the end of this volume had me freaking out and so excited to read the next one soon.
As always the art in this was absolutely goregous. I love that the manga artist really knows when there is a lot of detail needed in a scene and when there isn't. I thought that this was well done on the art front and it really kept me invested in the story.
I would say if you love English history or if you love Shakespeare or both, definitely pick up this series, it's worth the read.

😱😱😱 ❤❤ The ending of this volume was so sweet omg. Richard and Henry is the best thing ever. I am glad to hear that Henry and Edward are not actually related....because they both like Richard....I do believe that being adopted or living with your inlaws means you are 100% part of the family you are adopted to though! but if Edward and Henry where related it be like a father and a son liking the same person. But what can you say? EVERYONE LIKES RICHARD. Lol. Richard is really starting to struggle. The story's getting really intense and making him have to deal with a lot of tough things. I don't really like how Edward (the one who is Henry's son)keeps referring to Richard as a woman even though Richard wants to be known as a boy but I guess some people just don't understand. He think's a person's body is what makes them a certain gender which I totally disagree with. Rescuing Edward (Richard's brother)seemed like a very difficult task. The Richard and Edward thing was really weird cause they are related but I understand that it was probably needed to help him escape. I love this series so much! You bet I was waiting for Henry (from the Lancaster house)and Richard be reunited XD

I felt like a lot of things happened in this volume which is kind of wild to think about it. I enjoyed to see Richard disguise himself as a woman to save his brother and just not get kidnapped. It was interesting to see him embrace his "woman" side. Gender is complicated Richard I know.

I liked seeing Edward(Lancaster) be with Richard for a bit, and I feel so terrible for Anne. It is very funny to see both Edward and Anne say they love the same person. Richard you are too attractive. Too many people want to be with you.

I love all of the politicking going around it keeps me on the edge of my seat!

Todo el mundo enamorado de Richard, as it should be ✨

Can someone please give Eduard Lancaster a hug?
He is by far my favourite character! He is so pure and cute and hard trying.

But I live and die for Henry and Richard.
My heart will break when Richard will find out who Henry is,
but i SO want them to be together (damn, i know history, i know
it never will happen ... BUT STILL!!!)

By now i am neck deep into the book and i just cannot stop reading.

I can definitely see this becoming a top tier favorite of mine! I love how the series is progressing and how dark and twisty it is getting.

(Also I really hope Catesby joins the ever growing harem for Richard! That scene with them spooning each other was *chefs kiss* so cute! He may not be my chosen love interest but I love watching people simp and swoon over the main character! And honestly, Richard deserves all the love!)
