I have no idea what's going on. I have no idea what's going to happen. For the first time in a long time, I'm at a total loss.

And I'm loving it.

It just works. The things I find confusing are supposed to be confusing, for both the reader and for Richard. I have no idea what's going to happen, and that fact makes me wants to read more and more. The intrigue, the battles, the "paranormal or insanity" undercurrents... This is just so different from what I've been reading lately, and it's really pulling me in.

If you like darkness and political intrigue in your manga, you needs to read this.

Even better than the first volume. It's SUPER dramatic: everyone's scheming and revenging someone, there are ghosts and everyone's a little gay for each other it seems. And it takes major liberties (from both Shakespeare's plays and history) but aaah I love it. :D Usually, as you might know if you've read my reviews, I'm very nitpicky on books on Wars of the Roses but this is the kind of adaptation I don't mind being so different. It's over the top melodrama but so engaging.
And the art is so pretty, everyone's lithe bishie, yes, but I don't care. Oh, and Anne Neville is the cutest and I'm already afraid how she'll suffer in the next volumes. ;___;
(Only thing that weirded me out was that kiss scene. You know if you've read this.)

Still a bit confused by the story, but. I do enjoyed a few pages of this one.

I'm in love of Henry so much. I'm shipping so hard he and Richard. But I also like Catesby and Richard 🧍🏻‍♂️

I think what comes next is going to be better, can't wait to keep reading

Requiem of the Rose King, Volume 2
By Aya Kanno
Reviewed June 18, 2022

The adventures of this Shakespeare inspired Richard III continue in volume 2 of Requiem of the Rose King.

There’s a lot of action in this book with plenty of battles as York defeats Lancaster. It is during this time that Richard’s hatred for the Lancasters grows when he learns of his beloved father’s death. Following success on the battlefield, the late Duke of York’s oldest son becomes Edward IV, who showers affection on his two younger brothers, giving them royal dukedoms and encouraging them to seek out the pleasures of women. This isn’t enough for young Richard, who remains bitter over the loss of his father. Even the interest of Anne Neville isn’t enough to take his mind off of his dark thoughts.

Among those dark thoughts? Richard is both male and female, which by itself would be hard enough to deal with. He is also haunted by supernatural beings (something I forgot to mention in my review of volume 1), particularly the spirit of Joan of Arc, who is much sexier looking than I’m sure the real Joan ever looked. And though not dark, there is Richard’s white boar, a real animal that is part pet, part heraldic emblem, that shows up from time to time.

Also in this book, we meet Elizabeth Woodville. When she shows up portraying herself as the impoverished widow of a Lancastrian knight with two young boys, Edward is captivated. What he doesn’t know is that Elizabeth has ulterior motives; she wants to snag Edward so she can have her revenge upon him.

This sudden infatuation with Elizabeth doesn’t sit well with Warwick, who displays more than the usual affection between cousins and allies, and is not pleased with this development, as he had hoped for a French alliance.

The story is vast and at times convoluted, like a good old fashioned high fantasy series, and though the author has a lot of fun tweaking history to suit her story line, it helps if you have at least a basic understanding of the historical background. There’s also plenty of sword fighting, madness, greed, and drama—all the ingredients you’d expect from a historical drama.

From someone who's not normally a reader of manga or graphic novels, this is quite a treat.

MADRE MIA.

Drama 24/7.

I WANT MOREEEEEEEEEEE

Vol. 1 ★★☆☆☆

The story is starting to pick up. This volume is stronger and more cohesive because Richard's grief feels genuine. That said, I have a bone to pick with certain aspects of the story. For instance, Henry and Richard's friendship feels forced. It's not impossible to build emotional rapport with someone in a short amount of time. However, judging from how brief their encounters have been, I doubt they have strong feelings about each other.

In this second volume, the epic series of battles comprising the War of the Roses see the deposing of Queen Margaret in favor of of the Yorks: specifically, King Edward IV. Mangaka Aya Kanno plays loose and fast with history and Shakespeare, adding in historical tidbits that she deftly spins into a very interesting supernatural angle (e.g., Richard IIIs emblem, a pig, appears quite frequently as a pet). For those not invested in British history, Requiem of the Rose King can be a bit of a slog; unlike similar historical-inspired titles such as Riyoko Ikeda's Rose of Versailles, the political maneuverings of the Richard the III era are both ripe for storytelling but also very convoluted and confusing - with a huge cast of characters. Keep Wikipedia handy to get the most out of the title. And of note is that we have a very Shakespearean Richard: not historically accurate necessarily but a good tragedy and a fun story.

Story: Margaret's ruthless plans have failed: the battle is lost, Plantagenets defeated, and Edward is crowned king. He fawns upon his younger brothers, George and Richard. When Elizabeth Woodville captures the eye of the king, love is in the air. But not for Richard - he is bitter over the death of his beloved father and even the attention of young Anne Neville can't erase the taint of being both supernaturally cursed and a female. But as Warwick plays Kingmaker, he will soon come into conflict with the royal family and both Anne and King Edward will pay the price.

Granted, it can be quite amusing to compare royal portraits of the main players in Requiem of the Rose King to the manga version of beautiful people. But as a way to learn more about British history, this is a great introduction to the time of Richard III. Because Kanno has stayed true thematically to history there are a lot of tidbits and such to be gleaned. As well, it will make putting all the players into perspective that much easier as well. Richard III's young death, after all, marked the end of the medieval period and the beginning of the English Renaissance.

Is it as good a story without a basic historical knowledge of the period? Sure, there's plenty of swords, madness, greed, and over the top shoujo manga drama to keep readers interested. Knowing history just means getting a better idea of all the craziness surrounding Richard III and how the story is going to make huge twists just around the corner. It is worth sticking with, that's for sure. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Tengo nuevo manga favorito.
Me habría hecho tremendamente feliz.

This series is so bizarre. It's way too melodramatic and over-the-top for me to take it seriously and I'm HELLA dubious about Richard's depiction as an intersex character, but despite all this I want to keep reading?? I don't even like reading this that much but I find myself oddly fascinated and sucked in, in spite of my complaints. Onto volume 3 I suppose.

that...got oddly oedipal? i can roll with it though

i'm tempted to wikipedia the war of the roses to see if the semi-romantic subtext with richard and henry is meant to go anywhere but nah, i'm kind of liking reading this spoiler-free. it's interesting to read as someone more familiar with later tudor era history because it's like okay, henry viii must have inherited his entire personality from his other side of the family because gay devout christian is almost hilariously oppositional to everything he's remembered for

also if this wasn't aya kanno i'd be feeling some kind of questioning about the depiction of all the martial women of this series (joan of arc the demon! margaret d'anjou the villain!) but since it is aya kanno i will give her the benefit of the doubt

As both a history buff and a Shakespeare reader, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this series. On the one hand, I find Kanno's take on both fascinating, particularly Richard himself, although I'm still not sure about the whole intersex thing. (Not that she could have had a shoujo manga with an unattractive lead, so some change had to be made.) I am becoming fascinated against my inclination, however, so obviously Kanno is doing something right.
