Shake, clap, jump, and wiggle your way through this classic Raffi sing-along book!
Join a group of happy campers on a fun moonlit night in this beloved Raffi Song to Read. The rhythm, rhyme, and repetition of singing support and encourage speech and listening skills, laying the foundations for later reading.
Going to the library as a kid, I always had to pray that this book would not be checked out. It has to be in my top 5 all time (behind Danny and the Dinosaur though). It’s classic. The song is so so so catchy, and the book is so relatable. Sometimes I need to shake my sillies out!
Next I pulled out a very old version of "The Three Sillies" by Sheila Front in 1974 which was the only one we had on hand. I showed the group several pages, showing how many words there were on the pages and regretting that there wouldn't be time to read such a l o n g story in our short half-hour together. I suggested that we could "shake our sillies out" instead.
So we all stood up and followed the prompts in this song made famous by singer Raffi.
This served as the only "wiggle break" needed today.
Edited November 21, 2022: My kids still really enjoyed this book! They love dancing along to the story! It’s so much fun, and great to get some extra energy out.
Both of my kids loved this book! It was so much fun “shaking our sillies out”. My 10-month old laughed so hard at the fun things in this book.
This book had cute pictures, short sentences, and was interactive and fun. This would be a great book to help your child get some extra energy out before bedtime or quiet time.
This is a cute book that would be great for all children.
The animals in the forest are having trouble falling asleep because they have so many sillies. The sillies are contagious when the campers get a hold of them. Good song to use when the kids need to move around and get their sillies out.
Just like Mother Goose rhymes or other well-known songs, why not encourage one-to-one print matching and develop a confidence for reading and singing along with the text!
Watch out for those so-called fierce forest animals; they can get pretty silly!
I think the best part of this book is the Raffi song. My kids got a kick out of the fun pictures depicting some silly animals who can't go to sleep showing up at a summer camp.
Come on, this is just plain fun. I am using this book/song as part of a musical storytime for preschools and kindergarteners. They love anything music or movement based. This will be a hit.
3. Original 3-line summary: This book follows a group of campers in the forest that dance around with animals. Their actions correlate to the lyrics of the song, as they shake, clap and yawn together. Their are also illustrations showing these actions on each page.
4. Original 3-line review: This book is super fun and interactive. It is simple to read and easy to sing as well. The incorporation of animals and the illustrations showing these animals "shaking their sillies out" make the story even more interesting for young children.
5. 2-3 possible in-class uses: This book can be read at the beginning of the school year and the song and dance can be taught to the class as well. I think it would be great to return to when the class is super hyper, maybe after gym or recess, to bring them back and focus. They shake their sillies out and should be ready to learn again. This will also work on the motor skills of the really young students who are still developing.
summary: This book tells the story of campers and animals at Camp Mariposa that suddenly get the urge to jump around and shake their sillies out. They eventually get tired and begin to yawn.
review: I enjoy how lighthearted and silly this book is. It encourages to “shake their sillies out”, which can be an activity children are allowed to participate in everyday.
classroom uses: After reading this book, I would encourage children to shake their own sillies out, and would also make this a daily activity to keep children moving. It could also be a math activity for children to count the amount of characters in the story.
I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My kids LOVE this book! My two-year old brings this over to me most nights and wants to sit and cuddle while singing this adorable sing-along song. She always giggles and has a great time with it. The artwork is whimsical and pleasing to the eyes, the song is goofy and sweet all at the same time. Plus my kids enjoy seeing the mom and dad tucking in the little boy for bedtime.
A perfect bedtime read for families or young kids that will have everyone laughing and ready for a peaceful sleep.
In this book, animals in a forest shake out their sillies, along with campers, by shaking, clapping, and yawning. This is a great song book to sing to children when they start getting a bit hyper. It encourages movement and positive energy. It’s a must have or music and movement. Children will love the silly antics of the book and the physical engagement is vigorous. I would recommend for pre-school children. An activity would be standing in a large circle and having each child create a “dance” move to shake their sillies, then the whole group will copy them.
I have always loved Raffi Cavoukian music as a kid and then once I became a parent. His songs are great for teaching and just being silly. I have even used his songs for student teaching to get the sillies out. This book is so fun and really bring his song out on paper. It lives up to his song Shake My Sillies Out. The illustrations are fun and goofy which is perfect for those little reader. Each page is designed for the toddler who is sitting with their parents being silly. I highly recommend this board book.
Tadpole: "At group time today, we read the book "Shake My Sillies Out" and sang and danced along with the book. We asked the children to make silly faces, and they all laughed at each other and made faces to each other."
The song is fun. For illustrations, I prefer the David Allender version of forest animals. But this is perfectly sweet, too, following a boy through his bedtime routine with his parents with (whom we learn at the end are his) stuffed animals, imagined to be roughly boy-sized.
Elliot and I love Raffi books/songs, so this was fun, especially as we used Elliot’s rattles and maracas to sing along. Great for infants through preschool
