I had fallen down a dark and forbidden hole. Wonderland. A hole where I had two choices in life--to be a breeder, or to be a killer. To create life, or to destroy it.
I had chosen poorly.
Wonderland's thermostat was all but frozen, leaving two opposing factions, the Pennas and the Cyans, to spread throughout the forbidding tundra of a land forever cast in a dark and deadly ice age, seeking only power and control now that Wonderland had become a frozen ball of ice.
In this frigid and cold hole, I was alone.
Until HE found me. White Rabbit.
Rabbit was the leader of the Wonderland army, and I was now his captive. Forced to learn the art of submission, as well as the art of war, I became his soldier. From the moment I was captured, I became a mighty warrior amongst a cast of mad men.
But I was HIS.
And Rabbit would do whatever it took to battle my demons as we battled the enemy.
Hidden in the broken, and shattered Wonderland hid a new truth... a happily ever after. It was now my duty to find it.
Alta Hensley is a NYT & USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.
Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: Villains deserve love too.
Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.
3.5 Stars The previous book in this series wasn't really my thing, I'm pleased to say this one was the opposite and I enjoyed this one much more. This is a fairytale retelling which is very loosely based on its namesake. It was an imaginative endeavour a sort of dystopian fantasy retelling set in the future frozen wasteland of Wonderland where the two factions The Penna and the Cyan have been at war for years. Alice is a mercenary archer for the Penna who is disillusioned with just what she is fighting for so she jumps ship and deserts. Rabbit White is a commander of the Cyan army and when his path crosses with Alices and he realises her skill decides that instead of killing her to put her to work as one of his soldiers fighting for the Cyan army. The two from opposite sides of this war put aside their differences and slowly start to fall for each other. I found this to be much more emotive than its predecessor and could definitely feel the connection between Alice and Rabbitt. There's plenty of discipline and spanking here which was definitely hot. This was a very different read and despite being the second in the series this is a standalone it's the fairytale retelling that connects this series. I voluntary reviewed a copy of The Truth About Alice.
I absolutely loved this story which is a unique twist on Alice in Wonderland.
When Alice finds Wonderland she gets more than she expected with Rabbit. I’d have loved to read more about Wonderland.
This is one of my favourite fairytale retelling. This author has a unique way of telling her stories that has me wanting to read more no matter what genre it is. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
This is another interesting spin off a classic fairy tail. I feel like it's not really an interpretation, it's a completely different story with character names based on the original. It a very intriguing take on a post apocalyptic future, and the love story is pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of submissive female tropes, but it's balanced well against the warrior woman main character. this is an enjoyable read all in all.
This is not your mother's story about Alice in Wonderland. Nor are the characters like anything you've previously been lead to believe. Alta Hensley has given us a futuristic world of Wonderland covered in ice and snow with its occupants in a bloody war for survival. Which side is right and which side is wrong? You'll have to make up your own mind when reading. But know this, Alice and Rabbit White, along with the Mad Hatter, will definitely try their best to influence your decision. Each character is fierce in their own right with personality traits that are so relatable. The storyline itself is told in such a way it just flows while keeping you on edge with the circumstances of war, the mystery that Alice is hiding, and we have a bit of discipline going on here. What a great read.
The Truth About Alice was very different and not what I was expecting, but very interesting. It takes place in a frozen wasteland called, Wonderland. Now, this is no fairytale, it also holds very little in common with the original. It has a dark feel with lots of action and our erotic play. Alice is a mercenary and I instantly loved her spirit and the peace that she was wanting. Rabit was dark, dangerous and very intriguing. I enjoyed the plot and all the war that took place, the story was never boring. I read it start to finish in one sitting because I was captivated by Alice. She was very different than any Alice I've read and there's just something about her that hooked me. I read the first book in this series and it's nothing like this one. This book had a more intense connection between the characters instead of strait erotic. And that was what I loved the feelings these two characters held, the Love. I don't typically like this type of dystopia/post-apocalyptic feel, but I enjoyed it and liked the Twist Hensley put on this story. I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Truth About Alice is different from the first book of the series. Alice is a warrior and is tired of the fighting and the never-ending questions. So when Alice abandons her own kind and heads into Wonderland to intently die, she is surprised to come across the enemy's camp.
Rabit can't believe what he finds, a beautiful woman walking in Wonderlands freezing weather- a warrior from the other side. Alice is her name, and she is willing to fight for them.
Will Rabit and Alice be able to find a way to end this war that has been ravaging their kind for years?
The Truth About Alice by Alta Hensley is book 2 in the Evil Lies series. This isnt your children's fairytale. It's quite dark, gritty and intense based loosely on the fairytale retelling of the fairytale based on its name. This retelling is a futuristic dystopian drama with Alice as a mercenary, the rebel Rabbit and barren Wonderland. The plot is full bodied and active. Lots of feels, steam and chemistry between the characters. Enjoyed the plot - liked how the story wrapped up!! Can't wait for book 3 in this series.
Alice is caught up in a war between the Cyans and Penna in the frozen Wonderland. She was an archer for the Penna but she was captured by White Rabbit and forced to work as a soldier in the war. The two are enemies but put it aside to become lovers. The true attraction between them shows from the start. This is a dark tale with plenty of spankings and other shenanigans. A good dystopian read.
I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A unique twist that was well thought out, intelligent, and excited me from the first few words, this is not your average Alice my friends. NOOOOOOOO.....this one makes you think, has your heart beating with adrenaline, gasping along with the twists, and squirming in your seat...hold on, it's a wild ride!!!
Alta has taken a fairytale and has completely turned it on it's head! This dystopian story takes well known characters and introduces them in an entirely new setting, allowing all sorts of new dynamics to come into play. With ice, snow, cold, war, and death every day, this smoking hot story will keep you warm as you navigate the new Wonderland.
Alta Hensley writes these wonderful stories that make the reader think and then she puts her excellent twists on it. This is a very cold and dangerous place, this wonderland but don't let that deceive you. It may be frigid and deadly there but there is heat brewing. Another great story Alta!
Alice is a Penna. Penna women have two options. Fight, or breed. Alice chose to fight. After years in battle she'd had enough and left her people putting her in direct contact with the Cyans, the Penna's enemy.
Rabbit White is one of the leaders of the Cyans and the one to find Alice as she wanders the tundra. Good for her. He sees something in her that the others don't and orders for her to join them.
Their connection is strong from the start, and something Alice doesn't quite understand as the Penna were brought up to have feelings for no one, and not believe in love. Some things can't be denied though and this is one of them.
In this frozen dystopia land, it's two people from opposite sides that are perhaps destined to find love, and bring in a new future.
The Truth About Alice, by Alta Hensley, is a dark version of Alice in Wonderland. It's a futuristic, dystopian drama with a mercenary Alice, a rebel Rabbit and a barren Wonderland. As always when I receive an ARC, I won't include any spelling/grammar/continuity errors in my review as I expect them to be fixed prior to publication.
This is an interesting take on the Alice fable. Two factions are fighting over the barren, arctic wasteland that the Earth has become in the future. Alice, a mercenary, decides to leave a side she no longer agrees with and ends up captured by the rebels. Rabbit is a general in the rebel army. Over time, these two fall in love and continue to fight for their cause.
While I usually find Ms Hensley's writing to be exceptional, I found something lacking in this story. For me, it's 3 1/2 stars to 4 stars. There were so many time jumps that the story was very disjointed. I also didn't feel the initial connection between the two leads; there wasn't enough interaction for me to experience their relationship. There was a lot of description of Alice joining the group, then a time jump to her fighting along with them, then a time jump where Rabbit expresses his feelings towards a confused Alice, then a time jump to her loving him too. I would have liked to have read about the intervening time instead it being glossed over.
I did find the overall plot interesting and I did really like the two main characters. I didn't love Rabbit's harsh treatment of Alice in a few scenes, but it didn't detract from the book. I didn't dislike the book; I wish it had been longer with more depth given to the relationship. I'm spoiled by Ms Hensley's usual writing and this one just didn't quite measure up to her usual excellence.
This is actually a safe read with no OW/OM drama and no cheating. There is explicit language and sex. While there is punishments, all of the sex is consensual and Rabbit does value Alice as a woman and a warrior.
While not my favorite Alta Hensley book, I'm still glad I read it and I really loved the characters. For those who love dark retellings of fairytales, this book is for you.
I received an ARC from Booksprout in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
Alice was a soldier with the Penna but she has decided to desert, knowing that if she is caught the penalty is death. Soon she finds herself caught by the Cyans, an opposing faction and they must decide if she is friend or foe.
But through that she meets White Rabbit who gives her a choice between sex slave or archer. Once again Alice makes the wrong decision and finds herself in the frozen tundra.
Can Alice prove herself to Rabbit and the rest of the Cyan and find the love she wants more than anything?
This was a good book and I am liking these altered fairy tales.
I really liked Alice but understood why she was done with the senseless killing as the war was going on and on and an end didn't appear to be near. I liked that she was tough and fierce but still a woman. She knew she had to prove herself in battle to the Cyan and did a great job of doing so.
At first I really hated Rabbit as he was cruel to Alice but he never knew what her intentions were. Part way in you could tell that he actually cared about Alice and was going to do what he could to protect her but at the same time still letting her fight in battles.
I was so mad at the talks and everything that happened with that. I was hurt for the Cyan and so mad at the Pennas. I liked learning about Alice's past with the Penna and more insight into why she left them.
I was shocked when Alice made a decision about the water well and how much danger she ended up placing herself in. I knew why she did it but I also understood why Rabbit was so mad about the situation.
The end was good and I was glad that the two groups finally found some version of peace!
I've never read Alice in The wonderland. And only watch the movie bit by bit. My only understanding of Alice is the girl and the potion. So, I won't make any relation of this retelling and the story. My review of The Truth About Alice would be souly about the book.
A world in the edge of extinctions When a green blue algae believe to the cure Where are there's two faction fighting for their different stand on how to use this life saviour A girl, a warrior, a mercenary from a faction of scientist who believe science is the only way to survive in ice world Wonderland, Alice finally fed up of the fight and deserter to start living A man, a commander of his army, leader of the people who believe in old ways to consume the powerful algae, Rabbit the White captured the beautiful archer and bow to make her his.
Play of power Lots of spankin to submisson Strong yet reckless Alice Dominant yet passionate Rabbit The Truth About Alice gives you dark times of gloom ice world. Continues war to survive. Kill before got killed.
The action part, the battle field, would be great to see on screen. I enjoy reading it. But not so much for the romance. I can't feels Alice and Rabbit chemistry. Can't feel the sensual act of the submission/spankin scene Rabbit extract from Alice. And the first part when Alice first captured so easily? I wish more fight from Alice since she was so fiercely claim she is a great warrior and all.
I really wanted to love this. I'm a huge Alice in Wonderland fan so anytime there's a chance to read a retelling I'm all over it. I first heard of The Truth About Alice in a few of the reader groups I'm in and there was so many great things being said. So I went into this with very high hopes but what I got was a story that seemed to be chunks to a bigger story. Or a story that needed to be fleshed out.
The story starts out with a pretty heavy info dump that almost makes it hard to keep reading. Most of this information could have been sprinkled throughout the book and shown instead of just being told. I ended up skimming much of those first pages to get to the engaging action.
My biggest problem was the lack of romance build up. When Alice and Rabbit meet there is little chemistry and plenty of dislike, even hatred between them. There's a three month time jump, a missed opportunity to build up the foundation of the growing relationship and suddenly there's an apparent attraction yet I'm sort of left just having to assume the foundation had been laid during those three months. I never get any real chemistry between them. There's never that typical push and pull or will they or won't they.
Overall I liked the vague reimagining of Wonderland which is why I gave it three stars but the characters were one dimensional and the story felt almost disjointed.
In the bleak, cold wasteland of Wonderland, Alice left behind everything she knew in search of something different. She stumbled upon a new colony led by a fierce commander, Rabbit White, who isn't afraid to punish Alice when needed, but also willing to teach Alice how to love. Things she never learned living among her own people, but certainly something she needed.
The Penna people, where Alice was born and raised, do not display emotions, so she knows nothing of love or even sadness. She is a mercenary who only knows of killing and death. When Rabbit offers her more beyond the bleak life she knows Alice is torn. She wants what Rabbit is offering, but only at the willingness that she submit to him. How can anything good come of submission, but on the other hand how can she go back to the nothingness she knew before?
The Truth About Alice is full of wonderment. A world torn between extremes and people willing to tear each other apart because of their differences.
With light BDSM and loaded with lots of fight scenes The Truth About Alice is located in a vastly different landscape than Cinder's book with a vastly unique feel. This is a complete standalone in the Evil Lies series.
I like the whole post-apocalyptic - strong-willed heroine - Take no prisoner Alpha with a soft underbelly theme Hensley has going on with this series.
Alice is tired of killing in the name of science and the quest for world dominance(?). So she ups and walks away. I agree not quite the smartest move from our arrogant, talented yet not so worldly young Alice, but this is how IMO the story correlates with the fairy tale. Our skilled yet naive little killer (There are so many times I wanted to warm her backside!) seems to get herself into one situation after another... thank goodness for White! Rabbit has all the earmarks of a loving protector and a ruthless leader. He sees what Alice can not. He sees the woman inside, the one who has the potential to love and to be loved. He just needs to find a way to bring her to heel and bring her softer side to the surface.
This has the sweetest romantic undertone to it and White just clicked for me. There is lots of blood and battles and some animosity from the soldiers - ads a bit of tension to their relationship. Watching Alice find that there is a purpose for love and that it is quite possible to be a warrior and a woman was entertaining.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It is loosely connected with Alice in Wonderland, but this is not your normal type of story. I enjoyed the references, but it was not super based on it. Alta Hensley, girl, this world you created is something pretty darn amazing. This is a WHOLE different type of Wonderland in which you have two very different groups vying for power, who will win? The intellectual Cyan or the ruthless Penna?
I thought the characters were strong and had legit character arcs in which I felt as if I could understand them and the story drew me in like a moth to a flame. I have always liked the Wonderland references and those just made it even better for me! Not to mention that there is some seriously HOT scenes in this book. There is a very powerful message that is hidden in this awesome story that really resonated with me as well.
All in all if you like a bit of sci-fi and enjoy Alice references, this is a MUST read for you! Add in some super steamy scenes with light submission, you got yourself a good read!
PS: Thank you to Alta Hensley and Give Me Books PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review!
I really enjoyed reading this dark retelling of Alice. It shows a stronger side of the character in her decision to take charge of her life. She won’t let anyone dictate to her what needs to be done. This changes somewhat when Alice leaves her people and effectively joins the other side. She needs to learn to take order and contend with being physically different to everyone else. This causes tension and suspicion. How can she be trusted if she was once the enemy? Not to mention White Rabbit wants Alice to bend to his will. But she doesn't really want to give in to him, does she?
I enjoyed the interactions between White Rabbit and Alice and how it changed. I think Rabbit helps Alice see that it is okay to be submit. She doesn’t always have to be strong. She can depend on others. You can also see the relationship between Rabbit and Alice develop and grow. I also loved the Mad Hatter. He was great. It would have been awesome to see more of him.
Alice is a Penna with the options of fighting or being a breeder. Alice choose to fight until one day she had enough. She walk away from it all. Being on this dystopia land it will take two people from two different clans to come together to find love and start a new future. Alice and Rabbit connection is strong toward each other. Will they be able to have a future or will their war tear them apart? This book took you from despair to happiness. I was cheering for Alice to find love and being a strong woman to have the strength to move forward. I was not expecting to have feelings for this story when I started reading Alta book. She took this story on a amazing journey. Their was strength to walk away. Courage to move forward. Love to make a future. To expect more than fighting in a war to occupy land. When I started reading the story the first thing I thought about Alice was she is AWOL but then I realize she had enough of killing and taking. This story had me turning the pages to see what would happen to Alice. I enjoyed this book.

I love adult fairytale and children's classics retellings. Though some are better than others, there are a few that have that dark edge that I really love. You know, just enough naughty kink to make you bite your lip or keep your teeth on edge. Yup they speak to the dark part of my twisted heart. This is such a story. It is totally not a Wonderland you know. So let that go, right now before it blinds the potential of the book. This is a retelling, people. I admire AH for keeping it simple with the original Carroll characters (only names 4), since the plot and the world-building of the book is so complex. It's a big undertaking and I think this plot was totally unique. Though, I think AH had opportunities to bring more of Carroll's characters from the book into her book (Alice father, the generals could have been been named Red for the Red Queen etc). Despite that, I really felt this was a great plot and storyline. Almost a mixture of sci-fi and dark romance.

So this is the second book in the Evil Lies series and I much preferred this one to the first book. This tell the story of Alice and Penna. You see Wonderland is split with the Penna’s and The Cyan. Both fighting for what they think is right. As a Penna and a women Alice had to choose whether to be a fighter or a breeder. She choose to fight. However she becomes disillusioned with everything and wonders if she’s on the right side and decides to leave. She is found by Rabbit White a leader of a Cyan army. Alice is able to prove herself as a magnificent fighter and earns the respect from Rabbit and the cyan army. The more time they spend together the more attracted they become to each other. This was so interesting to read because as a Penna, Alice doesn’t know anything about love. Men and women are there to purely breed so there’s no room for feelings and love. The cyan believes in love and marriage. These two are so different but find themselves drawn to each other. This was so different to what I normally read but I really enjoyed it. I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
So, I have a serious love for Alice in Wonderland. So when I spotted that absolutely gorgeous cover, I knew I had to give this book a try. & I am truly so glad that I did.
The Truth About Alice has some concepts that are similar to the original story, but it is very, very different from what everyone knows of the original. &Although I do adore the original Alice, and LOVE when an author remains close to the original story, I discovered that this author created such a unique world of her own, that I didn't even think once about the original movie/book. I was sucked in, and wanted to learn more about these character's and this new world that the author has introduced us to. I think that Alta did a wonderful job in creating this new world, and that she has put together a solid story that I am sure many will love!
So, if the beautiful cover catches your eye, or if you read the blurb and you are thinking that this story might be a good choice for you, I say, go for it! This book certainly deserves to be given a chance, and I recommend that everyone gives it a try!
Alta Hensley's creativity and genius with the written word are all evident in this one. It flows beautifully, captures both the imagination and the emotions, and instead of just re-telling Alice in Wonderland she has taken the characters and made them her own. The detail Ms. Hensley puts into her world building is phenomenal and it's easy to envision the desolate, cold, forbidding place Alice inhabits. The setting details are really important to me when the book I'm reading is more fantasy or sci-fi/dystopian. I don't want to become bogged down in them, but I do need to "see" the environment. Ms. Hensley does an amazing job of detailing the world without making it boring. Another thing I really appreciated was the character names all being tied to the original. The strength and fierceness of Alice was great and the commanding Rabbit White was the perfect counterpoint to her. Their interactions were steamy and emotional and I loved them. I highly recommend this one to all romance lovers.
This is the second story in this series, but it can be read as a stand-alone.
Just finished this last night. Was a quick read with excellent world building and I enjoyed the characters.
It's very very loosely based on Alice in Wonderland. It's a dystopian society with 2 groups of people, one enhanced and the other not. The Penna and The Cyan and they have been at war both fighting for ownership of Wonderlands most important resource. Alice is a Penna mercenary and archer. After a particularly long bloody battle she decides that she's fighting for the wrong side. While she's wandering threw the frozen tundra of Wonderland she is captured by Rabbit, a general in the Cyan army. The story unfolds from there in an interesting and somewhat spicy way. There are a few spicy scenes so if you are sensitive to that stuff be sure to check trigger warnings. I'd give it 🌶️🌶️🌶️ on the spicy scale, however I'm a dark romance reader so my spice measurement may be a little higher than others Overall this was a good book I'd I recommend it to anyone that likes mild spice set in a dystopian fantasy world.

The Truth about Alice by Alta Hensley is a twist on Alice in Wonderland. Now Wonderland is a post apocalyptic world that is in a ice age; a cold and harsh world where two factions are fighting over a blue green algae. Alice's world is one where she is either a warrior or a breeder. As a warrior she becomes disillusioned with what she is doing and decides to run away from it all. Now she find herself captured by the Cyan whose commander is Rabbit. This is where the story got interesting. Now in the hands of the enemy and a woman no less a warrior in a man's army. What can happen to her? I really enjoyed this twist on this story. Definitely not your children's fairytale. The story was brutal at times but also sexy with the right amount of kink which Alice found herself enjoying, especially her punishments. This was also a story of hope and new beginnings. Enjoyed the ending. I am looking forward to the next twisted fairytale from this author. 4 stars for me.
Years of conflict have transformed the planet of Wonderland into a harsh, frozen environment and tossed its inhabitants into a medieval-like existence. Swords, axes, and bows have replaced guns, and weapons of mass destruction. The Pennas and the Cyans have been fighting for control of the one valuable resource on the planet. Each wants it for very different, yet sound reasons. I enjoyed Alice’s character. She’s brave and resourceful with a kickass mentality and exceptional fighting skills. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Alice and Rabbit along with his efforts to get her to accept his authority, both on and off the battlefield. There’s plenty of action and adventure, violence and brutality, several very steamy encounters and quite a bit of spanking as a means of behaviour and attitude correction.

Let me start with that this story was "Dark Feathers" before Alta rewrote it with the alice in wonderland theme. So if you've read the previous telling there will be some changes but the story is along the same lines. I have not read the previous telling so this story was new to me. I enjoyed the fast paced action of the battles and the two unlikely people from opposing sides coming together, in love, to stop a never ending war that no one even knows why they are still fighting. There was some spankings from Rabbit given to Alice when she didnt follow his commands. This book is in the light grey area. So not necessarily dark. The only thing I wish I got was more on Wonderland and why it became a vast ice age. Other than that I enjoyed the read for what it was, a moment to step into a world someone else has created. I recieved an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
