Undercover sheriff’s deputy Evan Whittaker is close to infiltrating a vicious local gang. He just needs to find an opening. Instead, he finds Wes Douglas, a web designer who is raising his irresponsible brother’s son. Wes agrees to help with a stakeout, but he pays the price when his home is destroyed in a shootout.
Evan’s always been a loner, but when he invites Wes into his home, living together feels right, and the two men only grow closer as they adapt to each other’s lives and rhythms. A future as a family looks brighter by the day, but all of that could collapse when Wes’s brother—and his connection to the drug dealers—crashes into the life they’re carefully building.
There's a lot of action in this story, but we get a side of MM romance. Evan and Wes meet when Wes is being blocked on the sidewalk by some idiots, while walking Greyson. Evan, a policeman, who's bald, fit, sculpted, strong, and undercover to break up drug dealers. Wes is a website builder working at the college, while raising his deadbeat brother, Trey's son, Greyson, toddler. His folks aren't much help, and Trey is a bad seed.
Evan and Wes, with Greyson, keep bumping into each other and they are attracted, but Evan is investigating Trey and the jerks he's hanging out with.
Wes is great with Greyson...
Then a street shooting ends up with a burning house, and Evan takes in Wes and Greyson. We get inner thoughts and also conversations, interactions and more. Our guys are open and honest with each other, and their first kiss is sizzling which leads to more.
With the cops, bad guys and new relationship, we are busy readers.
This is exciting, heartwarming, and is suspenseful, with a hot romance on the side. ENJOY !
This was a wonderful story about family by choice. Wes, Greyson and Evan were placed together by fate and through circumstances became a family. When your own family chooses not to love you, finding one that does always help. Wes gets a bird’s eye view of life as an undercover cop and the effect it has on those around them but if he wants a relationship with Wes then he has to find a way to deal with it. He fears for his brother and he fears for the man he is falling in love with and hopes they both come out safe and sound. I can honestly say that Mr. Grey has described undercover work in such a realistic way that I find it hard to believe anyone would be willing to do it. Once again I applaud Mr. Grey for a wonderful story filled with amazing characters. Why... why... are there only 5 or 6 books in these series?
There are few MM authors who can take a child and make him the star of the story without interfering with the overall narrative or the budding romance between the two men who adore that child. Andrew Grey ranks right at the top of that gifted bunch of writers.
In this case the star of the show is 18-month old Greyson, whose uncle Wes gets custody of him after his father Trey (Wes' brother) wants nothing to do with raising him after his mother dumps the kid off one day without Wes or his parents knowing Trey had a child.
Sure.
Then in strolls Evan, an older than Wes under cover cop (though we never know how much older--we think Wes is in his mid 20s). Both are actually strolling along a street in Carlisle when they meet, and the way they meet sets off a series of suspicions and tragedies that bring them close together as both friends, then lovers, but most importantly care givers to Greyson.
This is another really sweet addition to the Carlisle series, but this one has some violence that really hits home for all the nice people. Keeping it moving are several key people from other books in the series, and eventually you get your HEA in a way that is a total surprise, but finally in this book, a pleasant surprise.
Another great installment of the Carlisle Deputies. So far I have loved them all. I admit I was hesitant to keep my pre order due to everything that has come out recently about Dreamspinner. Then I read a blog by an author who was with another publisher that eventually went out of business. She said she wanted her readers to continue reading her books. They were for us and not to feel guilty about buying what we like. Dreamspinner needs to pay all the authors they owe.
This was a miss for me, the story felt clunky and the relationship kinda rushed in a way the writing couldn't make decent :/ still keeping on with the series, one book left
Wes is living with his mom and dad, raising his brother’s almost one-year-old son. He has guardianship of baby Grayson, but if it were up to him, he’d have his brother sign his rights over and adopt him himself. Unfortunately, his brother uses the baby as a “just in case”, he’s needed to help him gain something. It’s disgusting, but Wes doesn’t try to push, for fear that he’d take the baby and leave out of spite. Their parents sometimes seemed like decent people, but other times, just not… I never warmed up to them.
When Wes starts suspecting that his brother is getting in with the wrong crowd, it’s right at the same time Evan is trailing a crew that he suspects is running drugs in Carlile. When they run into each other not once but twice, Evan thinks that he Wes can be of some help to see if he can get an IN with his brother, and Wes hopes that Evan can help his brother get OUT. If only it were that easy.
When a shootout happens in front of Wes’s house and a fire leaves him temporarily homeless with baby Grayson, but thankfully, Evan is there and ready to offer the cute guy and his baby a place to be safe. Unfortunately, they both underestimate Wes’ brother and his importance and involvement of what’s been going on.
I don’t want to give too much of the story away, because there are some twists that I didn’t see coming and it shocked me. But like all the guys in this series, if you enjoy a hot dad (or uncle that turns into Dad), babies, hot cops, lots of action, both in the streets and in the bedroom, and a sweet ending that’ll leave you wanting more… don’t pass this one up! It doesn’t disappoint!
There were two things that docked this a star one being you had to squint to tell if they were actually having sex. The other was Wes' family they were not the greatest in the world. His mom and dad were alright, but when came to his brother that when were their fault was and Trey, Wes' brother was down right horrible.
Wes has guardianship of his nephew Greyson who he loves. He wants custody of him and has tried but his brother want give it up. He uses that as kind of a punishment a lot of times and near end this book almost took Greyson from Wes for good with what he did.
Wes and Evan met when Wes was being hassled by some guys. Evan is in a tight spot and so is Wes because Trey's involved with one the groups that Evan's undercover to get. Wes' family home is shot up and blows up which has him staying with Evan. Evan helps him with Greyson who is 11 months old and adorable as can be.
They fall in love and hold onto that because things go from bad to worse especially when Trey tries hurting all of them when realizes that he got played into Evan going into the group he was with. Trey was thought to be a follower, but I'm like Wes near end he did this to his self and boy did he do bad things.
The ending was perfect and the engagement was spot on. I'm glad that things worked out. The best part was Greyson calling them Pa and Da in the end of the book. Trey only once paid attention to him and that was when he was trying to impress Evan. Pour Greyson wasn't having that though and through fit.
I wish this series wasn't one book from being over it has been a spectacular ride.
I loved this book. But I have been reading the series. It does stand alone but helps you understand who the other characters are if you have read the previous books. I loved both Evan and Wes and of course, Greyson stole the show, (Jordan and Jeremiah almost did when they came over one night dressed as Daniel the Tiger. That was just too cute) Greyson’s reaction when Jordan took off his suit was to die for. Cuteness aside, this is a serious mystery/suspense. Wes’s brother (Greyson’s real father/sperm donor) is involved in a drug ring. Wes wants Evan to try to get him out and he promises to try his best. Trey is Evan’s in to infiltrate the new gang after a big gang war in front of Wes’s house resulting in the house exploding and Wes ends up staying with Evan. The relationship is very fast-moving (one week) but I felt believable. Andrew grey has a way of weaving all sorts of threads into a story. This one has cuteness, romance, sweet sex, suspense, twist, nail-biting moments and some very sad moments ( have tissues handy). The story is absolutely perfect.
Fire & Onyx is a great addition to this series! Evan and Wes are just so love-able and of course so is little Grayson! I really enjoyed their story and didn’t want to put it down.
Evan is a cop who mostly works undercover and he is currently trying to crack a local drug ring. Wes lives with his parents and takes care of his brother’s little boy Grayson. The two men meet totally by chance but their connection is important. Evan finds out that Wes’ brother Trey may be connected to the group he is trying to infiltrate. After a shootout outside of Wes’ house, Evan takes in Wes and Grayson and their connection really grows, but with the strain of trying to bring the group down and family connections it certainly seems like a relationship would be difficult for them.
I definitely enjoyed this story, I was totally invested and had to keep reading. Wes and Evan really are great characters with huge hearts and they definitely deserve happiness! There were some good twists and a lot of feels! I am a huge Andrew Grey fan and highly recommend this book and the whole series!
Fire and Onyx is the fifth book in Andrew Grey’s Carlisle Deputies series. This can be read as a stand alone but there are a lot of secondary characters that show up in this book and you may feel lost with all the different couples.
Like most of the stories in this series, there is bad guys needing to be caught and amidst all the drama a sweet romance brews. I really enjoyed Evan and Wes and Wes’ son Grayson. The romance between Evan and Wes does seem to take a backseat throughout most of the story. Despite the interesting plot I also found it to be pretty slow, my attention was easily pulled from this story, which is not normal for me, especially with an Andrew Grey story. I would still recommend this to all who have enjoyed Andrew’s previous work but if you are new to him do yourself a favor and start at the beginning of the series with Fire and Flint.
The saga of Carlisle police hotness continues. This is book #5 in the Deputies series and there is a 6th book out. This is also a spin-0ff of the the Carlisle Cops 6 book series. They don't have to be read in order, some of the other MC's make appearances in the other books but as secondary characters, their stories are not integral to enjoying the other books. But, I save these up for a long weekend and read away! I was glad when this one came out and game me a good reason to brush off the series again for the 4th time!
Andrew Grey's Fire and Onyx is te fifth book in the Carlisle Deputies series. Drama, suspense, danger... this book has a solid story that draws you in and keeps you hooked. Evan and Wes are fantastic characters. I love how they connect and interact. Their story has a sweetness and also a sexiness to the romance. I loved the story and now want to look into the series more.
This was a wonderful story about family by choice. Wes, Greyson and Evan were placed together by fate and through circumstances became a family. When your own family chooses not to love you, finding one that does always helps.
I liked the family aspect of this story (taking care of a sibling's child) but otherwise I didn't like the whole "undercover" issue. I'm glad that Wes stood up for himself at the end, though.
Wes and Evan first meet on the street when a group of Wes's only high school guys won't get out of his way--even though Wes is pushing a baby stroller. Evan gives the guys what for about their rudeness. Later, as Evan is trying to stay undercover at a crowded, local diner, following a group of men in a Cadillac, Wes invites Evan to sit with him and learns about him and his undercover job.
Things get hairy as Evan is in constant danger trying to infiltrate two rival gangs in the county. After Wes's house gets blown up when the gangs battle in front of his parents house, he moves in with Evan to keep Wes and Grayson (Wes's nephew who has been in his custody since he was three months old and his brother Trey not wanting to deal with a kid). Trey however is mixed up in all the this gang stuff and Evan doesn't want to get Wes involved . . . but it happens and things don't go well even though Wes and Grayson have become part of Evan's world and they have fallen hard for each other.
Things end badly and finding hope is all that is left.
It's hard to lose someone when you try to help them.
It's doesn't matter how much you try to help someone close to you to better themselves. It's up to them to make that decision. Wes tried to help Trey. He didn't want help, he wanted revenge. Thank goodness Wes had Greyson and Evan in his life. THANK YOU, ANDREW! ENJOY!
this story was really good.. sexy cover and interesting storyline. i enjoyed the writing.. this author does an amazing job with the deep and scary things.. i love reading real emotions and this didnt fail me. very good
The story of Evan, Wes any Greyson is by far my favorite. Scary and on the edge of your seat worry. Yet caring and loving. I was laughing in spots, holding my breath in other and crying by the end. Emotional and amazing.
A well written tale, complete with occasional emotional overload and the hoped for promise of a HEA. Good character and plot development, supported by cast from the previous books and some new members.
Andrew Grey is a terrific writer. His characters may be gay but sex is subordinated to the plot in every one of his books, just as it is in real life. Here, we have a cop and another gay man with a child custody issue and it all works out in the end.
You can't go wrong with an Andrew Grey book! This one is a wonderful continuation of the the Carlisle Deputies! Don't miss it! To bad it wasn't available in audio.
