Maki Enjōji is a Japanese manga artist. Among her works, Happy Marriage!? is one of the best known and it has been published in English under VIZ Media’s Shojo Beat, in French by Kazé, in German by Tokyopop and in Italian by Star Comics.
I really like how the plot is progressing, it’s super fun, they’re so cute, plus only 1 bed trope ahahah. ALSO CLIFFHANGER??? I don’t have any more volumes rn ahhhhh I need the next one!!
This series flattens out as the creator keeps falling back on tropes instead of making an original story: Christmas, Valentine's Day, White Day, romantic rival, and a field trip. Well, since they are grown-ups, the field trip is actually an overnight journey to a professional seminar, but everything else about their relationship is pure high school.
There is an attempt to change the status quo early on, but it doesn't come to much. I can see this falling off my radar soon if something substantial doesn't happen in the next volume.
One of the reasons why I picked up this manga series is because it sounds a lot like one of my favourite manga series of all time Itazura Na Kiss Volume 1, but during the more later stages of the characters lives with more mature themes. I'm glad that I picked up this series but this is the first volume (in the four that I've read) that has made me enjoy this series slightly less due to one problematic aspect of this manga. That was when Sakura was saying things like, "I'll become anything if it'll get you to love me" to Tendo. To be fair to Tendo, he was like, "Just be yourself" but Sakura is so adamant on changing to become his perfect girlfriend. This in combination to the fact that it seems like Tendo gets into a relationship with Sakura out of pity, made me like the series a tiny bit less because of how it seems. But I do know that Tendo does genuinely like Sakura he just does a terrible job of showing it in this volume (but it's better in the next one!)
One of my favourite parts of this manga was the first chapter. Sakura is in an ambulance and she is acting like her life is about to end and she's confessing her love to Tendo and saying her last words and he's just there like -_-. And asks her, "What makes you think you won't survive with a doctor here?" And she ends up having minor injuries. It made me laugh and diffused the tension from the last scene.
The manga also ends on a cliffhanger which made me desperate to read the next volume. I have read it as I recieved an ARC of Volume 4, and I just want to put it here that Volume 4 resolved the cliffhanger in a way which I didn't think was going to happen. It was a surprise for me.
Overall, I did enjoy this volume despite the one problematic aspect and I would still recommend this series and I can't wait to read more books in the series!
I am so glad that the obnoxious rival plot only lasted one chapter. The main couple are good enough at getting in their own way; there's no need for outside help.
In this volume there was a discernible shift in Nanase’s personality. Where she was previously self-assured and determined, she was for the majority of this volume extremely needy and insecure. Tendo, being the tsundere that he always has been, does nothing to reassure her that he likes her beyond sleeping really close to her without telling her (for the second time) and kissing her without consent (for the fourth time). This really speaks to a pattern of a lack of communication which is slowly becoming quite frustrating.
From an outside perspective, it’s very clear than Tendo likes Nanase. For the one part, he’s a no-nonsense guy, and he wouldn’t date someone if he didn’t genuinely like them. For the other part, there are moments where it’s clear he likes her, like when he However, being a novice at love, Nanase was a bit dense and didn’t pick up on either of these points, and that led to her soft-spined demeanour which only continued to get worse in each chapter.
There was also a removal of the focus of being a good health practitioner. It seemed like the narrative found it difficult to juggle the romance storyline with Nanase’s desire to be a good nurse, perhaps because that desire was only really borne out of a need to either deal with Tendo’s rejection or deal with Tendo’s lack of attention. This wouldn’t be so much of an issue if the narrative didn’t keep returning to it every now and then to remind you of what it’s lacking in favour of the romance.
Beyond that, it often felt like every character in the story existed solely to influence the romance. Obviously, this can be a genuine reason for utilising characters, however, it was too on the nose and too obvious here. From having every character be so obsessed with Nanase and Tendo’s relationship, to the second male love interest bleating about it in the background of panels, and to the introduction and immediate exit of a side character Sakai just to stir things up. It was as though no one was worth any inclusion in the story if they were not either talking about the romance or being an obstacle to the romance. And the more you notice this, the more you will find it difficult to ignore because it was so blatant in every chapter.
Despite all of the above, there was something still interesting enough in the romantic tension between Nanase and Tendo which saved this volume from being only 3 stars.
*siiiiiiiiigh* I thought Sakura was growing a backbone but, no. She’s still consistently giving me second hand embarrassment. Also, the romance is weeeeak in this one and I find everyone to be unlikeable to some extent.
I don't know about this one, chief. So Dr. Tendo decides to take Sakura in to try and get her stalker off her trail, but surprise surprise, the stalker finds her! Right as the creeper is about to get violent, Tendo tries to intervene only for Sakura to shield him from a punch. She ends up being taken to the hospital for her injuries and on the way there, she confesses her feelings to him. Because she's acting like she thinks she's dying, the guy agrees to become her boyfriend when she wakes up.
The only problem is this dummy doesn't have any feelings for her. (Or if he does, as his sister speculates, he's really, really slow on the uptake.) So poor Sakura starts wondering if she's even enough for him and tries to change herself to meet his standards. Thankfully, Tendo tells her to just be herself and knock that off, but the guy is so embarrassingly obtuse that he continues to inadvertently hurt her. There were some good messages mixed in: tell someone right away if you're getting stalked, don't change yourself to fit anyone's desires, and even the "rival" that showed up was booted off so fast it was so refreshing.
It's just aggravating beyond belief that this guy agreed to date her and then wonders why she's upset all the time when he's just kinda "meh" about everything. Sure, he's busy and he has patients to look after. But when he told her to her face to explain her feelings to him because he doesn't understand why anyone would be so foolish to like someone for so long...you lost me there rofl. I don't know why she likes you either sometimes.
Hopefully the next volume gives some development because goddamn, Tendo. Maybe think things through before getting involved?
I was really disappointed in this volume. It picked up right where the second one ended and it was anticlimactic. The whole buildup to this confrontation with her stalker was over in two pages and there was no conclusion to her stalker storyline. Things just plod along through the volume, with no progress being made romantically. At all. Honestly, I’ve started disliking both main characters. Sakura for not standing up for herself or having ANY IDENTITY beyond her love of Kairi and willing to change herself into ANYTHING just to get his attention. Is it wrong to expect more from a shojo heroine??? And Kairi is becoming more and more unlikable. He’s such a single note character. He’s “The Dark Lord” and nothing else. Any glimpse of something different was not revealed in this volume. Will I read the next one? Yes. Will I regret it? Maybe.
Nanase is about to start her career as a nurse under Dr Tendo who happens to be the reason she became a nurse in the first place. Five years prior, the two met while trying to save a stranger after which Nanase fell in love with the doctor. Now, not only does Dr Tendo not remember her, but he is also remorselessly demanding and the reason for the nurse shortage in their department. Nanase however refuses to be bullied out and earns the title of The Valliant one for trying to stand up to the grouchy doctor.
While I don't like it quite as much as Happy Marriage?!, this combines all things I like about Enjouji Maki. Nanase and Dr Tendo are a bickering couple that is just super fun to read about. I wouldn't call a particularly deep story but it's just plain and simple fun. While An Incurable Case of Love does try to add a bit of seriousness by going into stories of loved ones lost through illness, I didn't feel like those elements added much to the story.
Although this is largely a RomCom, I actually really enjoyed the hospital setting and how it was handled. It felt like a lively area where we also got to know some of the main characters' colleagues - while they were never fleshed out, it did create a sense of reading about a workplace community. I thought the nickname Valliant One was endearing and it was fun to see how all the staff kept tabs on the developing relationship.
Nanase, or rather the Valliant One, was quite a nice lead character. I liked that she didn't immediately continue liking Dr Tendo just because of his looks but most importantly, I like that she comes to care for her work for her own sake and always strives to better herself. In a way, she did end up choosing her workplace over Dr Tendo. Even though she often doubts herself, I think she makes a strong character in many ways.
Dr Tendo is unapologetically grumpy - he's not a brooding hero with a sad past. He's just the way he is, he knows it and doesn't care what others think of him. Of course, he learns to be more friendly in his own way and Nanase helps him loosen up, but I like that there's no particular reason behind his moods or any story that's supposed to make us feel sorry for him.
I suppose a lack of depth is what keeps me from loving it, but there is otherwise nothing I can fault it with. It's a fun RomCom, an easy read with likeable characters and nice art. I'm definitely hoping this wasn't the last of Enjouji Maki!
Today's post is on An Incurable Case of Love, vol 3 by Maki Enjoji. It is 192 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover has the two main characters on it. As it is the third in the series you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. There is no foul language, very mild sexuality, and very mild violence in this manga. The intended reader is someone who likes josei manga, medical romance and romance manga. The story is told from third person close of the main characters with a focus on Nanase. There Be Spoilers Ahead. From the back of the book- The mean Dark Lord has turned into a kindly knight! It's like a dream come true! Is this really happening?!! Nanase became a nurse to chase after Dr. Kairi Tendo. To keep herself safe from a former patient who is talking her, she stays with Kairi and pretends to be his lover! But the stalker becomes furious and attacks! As she loses consciousness, she reveals to Kairi how she feels!
Review- This volume picks up where the last one left dealing with Nanase's stalker. It gets handled in the first section then it becomes about her telling Kairi about her real feelings and putting him on the spot. He decides to date her as she asks him to. Of course Nanase is worried about his reasons for dating her but I think that he really likes her and just doesn't know what to do. In this volume there is no overarching story, just vignettes in the lives of Nanase and Kairi. From being at the hospital to traveling for work conferences together, just more moments of them spending time with each other. I enjoyed seeing them act as a couple in a more relaxed settings. I look forward to reading the next volume.
I give this volume a Four out Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
