A heart-pounding new series from the #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author
If your life dissolved in a flash, would you be strong enough to survive?
Half of the earth's population has been wiped out. Impossible to predict or stop, the Gamma Ray Burst tore through the Earth like a bullet, its radiation wave killing hundreds of millions and the aftereffects ensuring the deaths of billions more.
Now, as the world crumbles around them, a ragtag group of survivors make for the only home they know - the small town of Mercy. Spared the worst of the GRB's effects, the town is isolated, safe and self-sufficient - for now. The flash hasn't just decimated the Earth's population, though. It's brought out the worst in many of those who are still alive.
Survival in this new world doesn't just depend on preparedness - it depends on strength.
*****
It's the one disaster no one can plan for. A rogue cosmic event called a Gamma Ray Burst, sending a spike of radiation through the earth like a .50 caliber bullet through a ripe watermelon. It's speculated that such an event hit the Earth at some point in the past, causing a mass extinction event. With two potential sources for a GRB pointed directly at our heads, the chances of another one happening in our lifetime is remote... but still possible.
In Flashpoint, we explore such an event and the havoc it would wreak across the entire planet. From destroying our atmosphere to millions dying from incredibly painful radiation exposure, a GRB would be unpredictable and unavoidable for everyone, rich and poor, prepared and unprepared alike.
Flashpoint is a six-book miniseries-like event, written by Tara Ellis and #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus. This thrilling post-apocalyptic survival series will have you second-guessing the very nature of post-apocalyptic disaster scenarios and leave you breathless with every turn of the page.

The Gamma Ray Burst hit the earth as Danny and Sam sat in their seats, preparing for takeoff. Complete strangers to one another, they stayed together through safety and security. Millions were dead in horrific ways with radiation finding most; planes crashed to the earth, everything technological immediately stopped working; no phones, computers, power. Everything was gone except for those who were alive, trying to stay that way. Danny & Sam were two such people; Tom and his son Ethan; Chloe and the group of teens and their guides, hiking the mountains; Mayor Patty and her husband at the small, isolated town of Mercy. And then there were the criminals, now on the loose. Each group of people were heading toward Mercy...
Flashpoint is the 1st in the Flashpoint series by Tara Ellis and Mike Kraus and it was fabulous! Incredibly jaw dropping, fast paced and heart poundingly terrifying, it ended on a knife edge, so I'll be picking up the next - Smolder - very soon! Definitely a series which must be read from the beginning. Highly recommended.
I really like this book in that it's not just another EMP series. This one takes that subject to a whole new level and by doing so, holds your interest. This author writes in a way that makes you care about the characters in the story. I am looking forward to the second book in the series.
Beginning a terrific 6 part thrilling post-apocalyptic survival series, Weathering the Storm, by Tara Ellis and Mike Kraus, Flashpoint details the catastrophic, Armageddon-like Gamma Ray Burst, that sends the world hurtling down an accelerated global warming path of natural disasters as never witnessed before, that between them and the radiation fallout from the former, wipe out half the global population - and put the rest in peril from the things they've always taken for granted - clean water, electricity, food, fuel, medications, internet and communications are all snatched away in the blink of an eye. Even law and order soon break down, as only the strong (and strongest-willed) survivalists and predators survive. Can the National Guard react to enforce martial law when there is no longer anyone in the White House to give the command? And what about the foreign terrorists sent by their leaders to attack the US, that is no longer able to defend itself? Grab Flashpoint by Mike Kraus and Tara Ellis today and read all about the risks to our current world situation if we don't learn by what has gone before - go now!
Excellent story about several groups of people who are destined to meet in the town of Mercy. Strange name for a town but PA has even stranger town names. I m just hoping the bad guys die and the good guys live. On to book 2.
Wow. What a book by two fabulous authors. Having most of the earth wiped out by Gama Rays. How does one survive ? I felt as if I was part of the story. Intriguing.
A totally chilling story of an apocalyptic Gammer ray burst from the Universe. An extinction level event. Very scary, because you never know what Mother Nature or the Universe will dish out. So far it seems like a small town in Montana hasn’t had the big effect like other cities, could be its location in corespondents with the burst. Mercy has lost all its power and all electrical equipment, vehicles, anything we as humans truly relied on. But Mercy has hope at this stage, with their Mayor rallying around to get everyone on side and to help out everyone. Good, but it does seem that a few scumbags are heading that way to. Life on Earth has totally changed, for all her living creatures. A very good read, and I’m on to the next one.
I've learned so much reading these kind of books. Mike and his fellow authors all try to come up with something different with each of their series. I like learning about the different ways there can be to a world wide extinction type events etc/ scenarios and what to do each time. I get lost reading technical books but when you teach through stories that apply to real life situations, I learn a lot. Thanks for teaching this old lady new tricks!
Best one yet! A gamma ray burst changes the world as we know it. Half the world are killed almost instantly and the other half left with the fallout. The best thing about the book for me was the amounts of perspectives the book looks at both those who make it and those who don’t. Excellent book and I can’t wait for the next one
Finally a different apocalyptic tale. I thought all the authors had run out of ideas but this is enough different to make it interesting, exciting, and well worth reading. I like that he has paired up with other writers as that gives these stories new life. Try it. You won’t be disappointed!
Sometimes the thing that can be the most scary is that we cannot see. Mankind's inherent fear of the monsters lurking in the darkness waiting to pounce & devour your soul. I'm Flashpoint our end comes from the heavens, silent & deadly. Ushering in a new age of chaos, darkness, & madness. Can mankind survive? Do they deserve too?
Flash Point Book One. Awesome just truely awesome. The plot is excellent. The two writers keep the reader's attention through out the whole book. I did not get lost or confused with all of the characters. Cr,h
I selected this one in the Kindle Unlimited Store kind of at random. I wasn't expecting much, really. However, it turned out to be a little gem.
A very different Apocalyptic threat creates the danger...and characters must cope with the effects.
Plenty of near-term danger and longer-term foreboding. Characters are painted broadly but effectively -- most reminded me of some specific person I knew, whether a cop, a father, an EMT, a teen in danger, orbtroubled teens placed suddenly in peril. There's even a true lunatic. These are people you know very well, because you've already met them...or at least, someone very like them.
I also enjoyed the initial setting, which is largely in SE Idaho and nearby environs...though the focus will shift to Montana in the next book. I've been to most of these places, and know well the people who inhabit the Intermountain West.
This is the initial book in a series, but I really enjoyed it so much that I'm even going immediately to Book 2. I need to know what happens to these folks!
Highly recommended. Suitable for ages 11and up. VERY CLEAN, no language or sex scenes.
If you're a fan of the P-A genre, you're probably going to enjoy this book. Give it a try!!
I loved this book. It had a bit different take on the apocalypse, going with a different reason it happened than I have seen before. I am ready to read #2!
What happened to life as they knew it and how do you survive? Follow the ones who are trying to live and find some way to get to a place of refuge , a town named Mercy.
Gamma rays fry everyone who is exposed and everything electrical. Different from the standard EMP story this takes it a bit farther, with an intriguing twist. It's a good read, but needs a little polish.
Up front, we know this series will have 2 authors, Tara Ellis and Mike Kraus. Anyone can tell when Mike Kraus co-authors because EVERY series he's involved in is the same. It's told in the same manner and tends to have the same kind of villains. He is totally formulaic in his writing. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it IS monotonous and, frankly, wears me down and bores me after a while. It also showcases the author's lack of effort and creativity.
My advise to Tara Ellis, you have talent and don't need to follow his "script", as so many others do. Be creative, be bold, be different. The world already has too many carbon copies.
Flaspoint is told in multiple POV, split by chapter. As various groups or individuals prepare to find or descend on struggling town of Mercy, Montana. Some are looking for safety, and some for trouble.
Danny is a paramedic who is tired of her job and interviewing elsewhere, and Sam, a high school Chemistry teacher, are passengers on a plane, thankfully still on the runway when the Flash hits, worldwide.
15 year old Ethan is on the road with his father, Tom, and the horses they'd just picked up. They're still miles away from home when the flash hits. Good thing they've got horses in the trailer!
Tom is worried about getting his son, Ethan, back to his home safely. A son who isn't thrilled to be visiting dad while his mom and step-father are away on vacation.
17 year old Chloe is a "troubled teen" with anger management issues, who has been dumped by her parents with the "Trek Thru Trouble" group of counselors, and is stuck with a bunch of other teens she has no willingness to get to know. They have no idea what's going on because they're hiking in the middle of nowhere when the flash happens. Her week of "outdoor therapy" becomes a helluva lot longer when they're all stranded in the mountains.
Patty, is the Mayor of the town of Mercy, where all of these individuals will, eventually, congregate.
We meet several random people, who die almost immediately. Kenny a cop with the NYPD. Antonio is stuck on a cruise ship, at sea. Jenny is Kenny's pregnant wife, who had been caring for her elderly mother. I'm not a fan of reading several chapters of people who will not be pertinent to the storyline.
Russell, wants very badly to escape the mental hospital he's in. No good news there!
I read this and the 2nd book in the series pretty much back-to-back. The 2nd one is good, though I could see Mike Kraus's hand in it a bit more.
If an author wants to churn out episodic stories without much thought, Kraus' formula works, though it doesn't make for memorable novels.
I just finished the 6-book series and highly recommend it. I think Ellis and Kraus played well off each other and created believable characters and realistic scenarios. Their writing styles worked well together too. I seldom give 4 stars but offer that this is a very readable, enjoyable fireside series for those long days during the pandemic.
Liked this book, action, people surviving or not. I love when a story introduces us to to various people and eventually meet up. Good characters, we get to know them, good details of the struggles to survive move the story at a good pace. I’m about to start the next in the series. I do wish I do wish all the books were put into one book, easier to track what you’ve read already. I recommend this series.
Flashpoint is an apocalyptic (series leads to post apocalyptic I believe) that takes place after a life altering flash appears in the sky. We get to read of the aftermath and the immediate turmoil from many different perspectives. Overall, I do not normally like to read in multiple POV but the different character perspectives allow for a unique description of the story. There were some moments when I wish a characters POV would last longer because I would spend their chapter trying to determine who they even were and by the time I did the chapter was over. This may be something that becomes more clear as the characters come together. I also wanted more to happen but I understand this is the first book in a series and there was a lot of world building as well as character building. I did want more action leading me to a 3 but I can't stop thinking about this book making it a 3.5 and I think the book definitely deserves the round up to 4 stars. I plan to continue on with the series.
*More on POV* Each character is a different age and this allows for the reader to get to experience these events in many different emotional stages. We also see different responsibility roles being taken in small individual settings. I found the small town mayor and father POV's to be the most interesting because they needed to consider their actions for other people and did not get to have a selfish moment during the chaos.
Another interesting bonus from the multiple POV was that each character needed to understand what had caused the symptoms and overall chaos. This let the reader have many opprutunitees to read of what happened and some characters did not care of specifics while others wanted the fine details. This was a great way to set up the events because the reader can be slowly introduced to the concept and then it develops as the other characters learn more. It helped me understand why the events that occurred mattered and how realistically this could happen.
It feels like we are off to a new adventure. I love the character development and the feeling of being drawn into the story. I am always amazed at how well such varied characters are all drawn together.
For those of you who read my blog will know that I am a huge fan of Tara’s and I’ve read all her books. Tara and I have a really good friendship, so when she told me about Flashpoint I knew I had to read it as I had nothing left of hers to read.
Flashpoint is about a worldwide radiation exposure from a Gamma Ray Burst killing millions and knocking out all technology, electricity, clean water and communication.
The story of the GRB is told by several different people some on their own others with family or someone they just met all trying to get to the town of Mercy as the world around them turns into a free for all. The only problem is some of these people are good others are not so good.
Mercy has lost power and vehicles but the Mayor gets everyone to help out in one way or another wither it being getting water to put out fires or distributing food and essential supplies.
This was a great read and I cannot wait to start on book 2.
Kraus does it again!!! This is going to be another incredible series. There’s suspense and intrigue for days!! Usually writers that come at a story with multiple unrelated characters, from multiple unrelated places, blow it in the first third of the book by creating so much confusion that the reader loses interest. Its difficult to follow the story so the reader puts the book away and finds another. Kraus doesn’t have that problem. I enjoy the way he subtly links his characters making you want to read quickly to figure out how it’s all gonna come together. I can’t wait to start the next book of the series!!!
Best one yet! A gamma ray burst changes the world as we know it. Half the world are killed almost instantly and the other half left with the fallout. The best thing about the book for me was the amounts of perspectives the book looks at both those who make it and those who don’t. Excellent book and I can’t wait for the next one
