England, winter, 1131

Elfrida, spirited, caring and beautiful, is also alone. She is the witch of the woods and no man dares to ask for her hand in marriage until a beast comes stalking brides and steals away her sister. Desperate, the lovely Elfrida offers herself as a sacrifice, as bridal bait, and she is seized by a man with fearful scars. Is he the beast?

In the depths of a frozen midwinter, in the heart of the woodland, Sir Magnus, battle-hardened knight of the Crusades, searches ceaselessly for three missing brides, pitting his wits and weapons against a nameless stalker of the snowy forest. Disfigured and hideously scarred, Magnus has finished with love, he thinks, until he rescues a fourth 'bride', the beautiful, red-haired Elfrida, whose innocent touch ignites in him a fierce passion that satisfies his deepest yearnings and darkest desires.

Elfrida and Magnus' story is both passionate and beautiful. With his battle scars, Magnus is offered help by Elfrida and the medeival times have been beautifully described. With knights and witchcraft, the story drew me in almost immediately. Enjoyed it.

The Snow Bride if full of imaginative ideas and if you’re inclined towards the fairy tale you will enjoy The Snow Bride. The war-torn hero of the Crusades has to work to gain the love of redheaded Elfrida, a good witch, though it doesn’t happen immediately and he is endearingly surprised that it eventually does happen. Magnus is a very likeable hero; consistent in his support for the rash Elfrida who is willing to sacrifice herself to the Necromancer who has snatched her sister. Sadly, I found a consistent sense of the medieval wasn’t maintained for me- phrases and images described were sometimes too modern and didn’t ground me in the era. Personally, the technique of using italics to display thoughts interrupted my reading pace, rather than the opposite.

Snow Bride by Lindsay Townsend
A Book Review by AZ Perez
May 2024

Hysteria ensued in the villages as the ‘bride to be’ virgins are kidnapped by a Forest Grendel. Why? Nobody knows. So that, the elders of the medieval times summon the scarred hero of the Crusade – the Knight Magnus, and his men; together with the beautiful souled witch of the village – Elfrida come together to rescue her sister and the other brides.

Along the way, Elfrida sees how beautiful is the soul of Magnus while most regard him as a beast. Their love blossomed as they got to know more deeper about each other and as their task of pursuing the Forest Grendel is becoming challenging day by day. Their attraction transcends the physical aspect to a higher plane of oneness concerning faith, respect, acceptance and trust. There is a scene that touched me about how steeled and comfortable is the heart of Magnus when one of the ladies is asked how she viewed Magnus.

The book features more on the capabilities of Elfrida, her discovery of her powers and her flaws as a young witch. On the other hand, the book demonstrates how Magnus compliments Elfrida as a seasoned warrior and leader.

I enjoyed the part of showcasing the various herbs, its nature, its use in home remedies to illness and its significance in witchcraft of the tale.

The medieval setting and the romance of a ‘beauty and the beast’ will never cease to amaze me and will always be. And all throughout while I was reading, the narratives are silky and easy- flowing. This book is truly a wonder and a treat!

The Snow Bride is a historical romance with plenty of witch craft, tales of knights and old world charm .
But most of all it is about the love that blossoms between a scarred knight and a lonely, beautiful witch.
Can she see beyond the beast that people think he is? Yes she can.
Together they endeavour to solve the puzzling disappearance of young brides, including Elfrida's own sister.
With his cunning and her daring
His bravery and her resourcefulness they make a compelling pair.
The only thing I must mention is the storyline does not bear bears much similarity to the original Beauty and the Beast. The story is beautiful and stands strong by itself .

I really liked this book. It's fantasy set in the medieval world, but there's something different in the plot that makes this book unique in the genre. Magnus is a knight back from crusading, which left him scarred and craving love. Elfrida is a good witch who loves her sister, Christina. When her sister is kidnapped before her wedding, Elfrida teams up with Magnus to find Christina and solve the mystery of her capture by the Forest Grendel. This book has a lot of references to medieval culture and magic.

This historical romance is no sugar-coated, pasteurised version of 12th century merrie-olde-England, but a fast-paced story of fear and loss, hope and love set in a wintry Medieval landscape readers can taste and smell, can almost touch. No chivalry, here, between knights making a life after returning from Outreimer – the golden ladies in their rich gowns are terrified sex slaves, and Elfrida may well be joining them.

The author does a brilliant job of making her characters live within their time period. Elfrida the hedge-witch, or wise-woman, doesn’t just make herbal remedies. Through her eyes readers see the plants she collects, notices the land in the detail a woman of her learning would, giving her a mindset straddling both the Old Religion and that of Christianity and its saints. When she ‘bewitches’ a washerwoman, readers see it for the hypnotism it is even if her shocked contemporaries are warding against evil.

In this respect, giving the battle-maimed Magnus a background of Crusading in the Holy Land was inspired, as it brings an other-world perspective to Elfrida’s beliefs. That the skirmishes alluded to were as much for personal booty as the greater glory of Christendom sits well with both historical accuracy and human frailties. Readers never see Magnus’ seat of power, as at the start of the novel he is responding to his villagers’ pleas for help, but he is no fanciful lone knight. He has with him a full contingent of hearth-men, horses and wagons to carry all they need – which in the depths of midwinter means food enough for peasants as well as themselves. I particularly liked the way communication was problematic, as it would have been within village dialects of the northern Pennines, and a Norman-French overlordship reaching back to its Viking roots.

It is this sort of detail, often conveyed in a quiet line, that makes this historical novel sing. If prospective readers want to learn how life was during the Medieval period, this is a cracking way to take a peek.

I’ve read plenty of books and enjoyed them all, but there have been a few which stand out above all the rest. The Snow Bride is one of these. Well-written in narration, character description, and dialogue, I fell asleep reading it each night…not because it was boring but because I didn’t want to put it down. The scenes between Magnus and Elfrida are a delight give-and-take, full of near-poetic description and wit. The depicting of the hero as less than perfect and ugly, is unusual and in lesser hands, it might not work but in this case it does, through the revelations of Magnus’ inner thoughts and hopes. When was the last time you read a story in which the main male character had no front teeth and a peg leg (and wasn’t a pirate)? Elfrida is no less unique, a witch, it’s true, but one who prays to God and the Madonna right along with her exhortations to the Goddess as she weaves her spells to save the abducted girls. This author has a way with minor characters, too, making the sister Christina such a spoiled, empty-headed brat, I, for one, was grateful she only appeared at the beginning and end of the novel. After reading the few pages in which she appeared, I found myself wanting to slap some sense into her plus ask Elfrida how she could let her have her way so.

I heartily recommend The Snow Bride, a truly unusual but lovely Beauty and the Beast. It should capture the hearts of readers of romance, historical fiction, and paranormal fiction alike.

If there were a higher rating here than 5 stars, I'd give it that!

An engrossing medieval romance!

In a small English village in 1131, wisewoman Elfrida prepares her sister for marriage, but on the eve of the wintery marriage, her sister is kidnapped. The men of the village appeal to Magnus, a nearby Lord who fought in the Crusdades and returned home missing a hand and a foot and bearing a scarred face.

Magnus seeks wholeness and a lady of his own; instead, he ends up rescuing Elfrida as she’s trying to sacrifice herself to the monster who has now stolen three brides. They join forces and share dreams to search for the missing women. Brigands, dark lords, and an evil wizard thwart their progress, while a growing romantic attraction wreaks havoc on their plans.

This medieval romance kept me spellbound from start to finish. Magnus is the ultimate wounded hero, and Eflrida’s love for her sister transcends the page. I read this book in one sitting. Of particular note are the richly layered historical details. They were so evocative it was like watching the story unfold before me in a stunning tableau.

A bewitching read

I was completely vested in this story of two fractured lovers! But, it’s more than a love story! It touches upon the good versus evils of a world fraught with demons, witches, and maniacal, devious antagonists! The imagery is so beautifully done that, even though it’s frigidly cold, I felt a warmth and comfort in each turning of the pages. Not only are the characters engaging and ‘real’, they pulled at my heartstrings as they, unrelentingly, continued on their path. I found, too, that this was not an ordinary tale of two warriors rising to battle the nefarious, many metaphors and parallels to our shared reality: a social commentary. An excellent book!

I read this novel during a summer heatwave, but the scenes of ice and snow were so vividly described I was easily swept into this medieval love story. Magnus is a magnificent hero - ugly and battle-scarred, he is the heroic beast to the healer Elfrida's beauty.
The scenes between these two lovers were both passionate and witty. They are drawn into a battle with evil, and the danger that lurks in the frozen forests is like a palpable presence.
This is a passionate read, and full of suspense, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a medieval fairy tale. The imagery and descriptions of the snowy winter and the landscapes were amazing. Elfrida is a witch feared by the townsfolk and Sir Magnus is a scarred hero. They unite to find a monstrous creature who steals brides, the last one being Elfrida's sister. They fall in love in a mystical setting, a charming story full of magic and romance.

Ok

I found this book to be overall, just o.k. There were many things I liked, the setting, the characters, and some things I just wasn't keen on (the writing style--it felt like it was all show and no tell and that made it rather confusing here and there).

wonderful read

The book tells an engaging story set in a fantasy world during medieval times. It focuses on two main characters: Elfrida, a village witch who discovers her true power, and Sir Magnus, a brave knight with physical and emotional scars.

Characters:
Elfrida grows from a simple village witch to a powerful figure who uses her magic for good. She shows that she's strong, smart, and caring. Sir Magnus, initially just a typical brave knight, is more complex than he seems. He deals with his own problems and changes a lot throughout the story, especially in how he views magic and Elfrida.

World-Building:
The author does a great job creating a fantasy world with dark forests, magical towers, and a medieval society. This world feels real and affects the story a lot, making the adventures of Elfrida and Magnus even more interesting.

Story and Pace:
The story is exciting and well-balanced. It mixes action, mystery, and love. The pace is good, moving fast during exciting parts and slowing down to focus on the characters' feelings and growth. The main threat in the story, a dark figure named Joseph Denzil, keeps things tense and interesting.

Themes:
The book explores important ideas like the use of power for good or bad, the importance of love and teamwork, and the journey to find one's true self. It challenges old-fashioned ideas about men's and women's roles, showing that both Elfrida and Magnus are strongest when they work together.

Final Thoughts:
Overall, this book is a fun and meaningful read. It mixes fantasy and romance well and offers readers a story full of adventure, love, and the battle between good and evil. It's a story that sticks with you because of its interesting characters, imaginative setting, and the important messages it shares.

Fantasy and romance make a magical story!

I truly enjoyed this new take on Beauty and the Beast. Elfrida is a white witch, Magnus a man scarred and crippled by his time in the Holy Lands during the Crusades. Magnus is hired to find and destroy the shadow creature who has been stealing women just before their bridal day. He has taken three woman so far—one of whom is Elfrida's beloved sister. Magnus is forced to accept Elfrida's help in tracking the real monster, first because using her sixth sense she can find him, and second because she is the first woman not to feel that Magnus is the monster, despite his horrid looks.

I liked how Magnus and Elfrida worked together to find her sister and the other brides. I loved his strength of character in getting past how others saw him, and hers in letting him feel and use her strengths. For fantasy and magic, I recommend The Snow Bride.

Fairy-Tale of Fear and Loss, Hope and Love

Being a witch, Elfrida expects to be able to take care of everything and everyone. When a fierce beast abducts her sister, she offers herself as bridal bait.

Sir Magnus, scarred for life and battle-hardened, returns from the crusades with little hope for a normal life.

Together they take on the search for and rescue of Elfrida’s sister.

Ms Townsend doesn’t sugar-coat her fiction. On the contrary, the action unfolds in raw expressions that fit the period. Elfrida comes to life as a strong but sensitive human being, and Sir Magnus’ plight is striking, etched on the reader’s mind with fierce pen-stokes. All in all, The Snow Bride presents a believable and fierce world that bowls you over and makes you think.

A great piece of literary work

After finishing this story, I realized the true magnificence of this story set in the 1100s. 99 percent was true to the time. I had wondered if this was the right book for me to read when I read about the dark magic, as that is not my thing. Never fear. Dark magic was minimal and light and love shone forth in good magic. If you love castles, winter, snow, maids, maidens, knights, Christmas, romance, some sexual encounters, and some evil that was vanquished, this is your next read! Five stars.

I recommend, "The Snow Bride" by Lindsay Townsend.
The audiobook was well engineered and the reading, by Victoria Scott, was musical.
The story was an adventure into medieval England. Characters were expressive and engaging. The scenes were descriptive and inviting in most cases.
There were scenes that were scary and full of tension keeping the reader entertained and interested.
The part I liked best about Lindsay's book was the hope and the love expressed by the hero and heroine. They had to find a common language, get beyond outward appearances and prejudices. Very well done work on overcoming disabilities and special gifts (which to some would have seemed like trouble in medieval times) to the core of human nature to love and be loved and to overcome evil.

Thank you, Lindsay, for a tale that brings so much hope and true caring and understanding to the reader. I will be reading more of your books. I'm glad we connected on tweeter, @lindsayromantic, keep on tweeting.

The Snow Bride delivers a thrilling tale of magic, adventure, and love.

I adored Magnus!! I loved how he was not the flashy knight-in-shining-armor, but instead was battle-scarred and weary, was someone who's proved himself and could be counted on to keep fighting through any and every battle. He desperately sought after a seemingly unattainable dream and watching him realize Elfrida was his dream come to life - what he wished for and then more - melted my heart. The gentleness he showed Elfrida balanced wonderfully with his protectiveness that flared around her.

Elfrida had a heart that overflowed with devotion and compassion, even as much as she struggled to truly find her place. She had a special kind of wisdom and a stubborn tenacity that saw her through her journey, and afforded her the opportunity to learn that she wasn't on her own fighting battles anymore.

I enjoyed watching the two of them learn to compromise and trust each other - which was very much a challenge with their temperaments and instincts. Their ability to communicate and make reparations quickly also showed strength and confidence. Their strengths played well off the other, even if sometimes you were wanting to join the other in shaking someone... haha.

If you enjoy a adventure story filled with knightly brawn and magical good-vs-evil, this is a fantastic story to snuggle up with on the long, dark winter nights.

Great historical romance...

Set in a seldom used time period, this story compassionately handles the issue of disfigurement and being an outcast. You find yourself rooting for the misunderstood hero and heroine.

Would have liked a bit more character development. They felt a bit straw like at times, unreal in some way. This made an otherwise interesting and comp!we plot drag a bit.

Overall though an enjoyable read.

I always tend to give things four stars. The characters, Magnus and Elfrida were very real and engaging, I loved their love story. There were points where I got confused. The author needed to clarify some of her descriptions. But it wasn't so bad that I lost what basically happened. This was a nice twist on Beauty and the Beast...
