The Every-Day Life of Abraham Lincoln

Rate this book
In 1863 a delegation came to the White House to complain about President Lincoln’s conduct of the Civil War. The beleaguered president listened patiently and “Gentlemen, suppose all the property you were worth was in gold, and you had put it in the hands of Blondin to carry across the Niagara River on a rope. Would you shake the cable, or keep shouting out to him? No! You would hold your breath as well as your tongue, and keep your hands off until he was safe over. The government is carrying an immense weight. They are doing the very best they can. Don’t badger them. . . . and we’ll get you safe across.” Such stories abound in The Every-Day Life of Abraham Lincoln . Francis Fisher Browne, a prominent Chicago journalist of the day, interviewed Lincoln’s contemporaries to get a candid view of the man before he was enshrined in legend. This early biography describes how Abe looked, acted, and talked in countless situations. It follows him from his birth in a cabin in Kentucky to his work as a lawyer, legislator, and orator in Illinois, and on to his destiny in Washington, DC. All the great events of Lincoln’s public life—from his debates with Stephen Douglas to the Emancipation Proclamation—unfold in a personal and historical context. He is seen as a son, husband, father, and friend. Browne gives an authentic sense of the melancholy, humorous man whose love of stories never precluded rigorous thinking and whose oratory led Americans through years of terror and crisis. This reproduction of the first (1886) edition contains the most authentic and complete version of the interviews.

THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN is an excellent book for anyone that wants to read a FREE book that take a look at his entire life. I was slightly disappointed in this because I thought it was going to have more quotes from the people who knew Lincoln than it did. They were there, and offered good insight into him, but I thought by the description of the book that it was going to entirely be that way and it really wasn’t, but was rather a biography with quotes added in here and there.
The biography in which I recently finished, A.LINCOLN, is much broader in terms of the depth and details that it goes into with Lincoln’s life. There are points in Lincoln’s life that are skimmed over in this book, but covered in much more vivid detail in A.LINCOLN, but again, this book is free and is perfect for anyone wanting to know more about Lincoln’s life. From his early childhood, to his assassination, this book pretty much covers it all. This can be found for free in the Kindle store and I’m sure many other places. I give it 4/5!

Wonderful book

Having lived in Illinois and having visited all the sites in Springfield at the cemetery at new Salem in Kentucky and Indiana. I have long felt such a closeness to Abraham Lincoln . I am currently reading Herndons's book on Lincoln but when this one became available was interested in getting firsthand information from people who actually knew Abraham Lincoln this book was fascinating and so interesting.

Excellent coverage of Lincoln.

A unique biography giving the reader a “you are there” view of Mr Lincoln’s life. You are actually there during the events of his life, seeing him react, hearing what he said and how he said it. Looking at his face, watching his tears, his smiles, his dark moments as they covered his mind and face. And you ser him push through and excel over his awesome challenges. If you need a super hero, read this book!! He is so high above those ignorant “woke” clowns who criticize him, it is tragic they have no clue of which they speak…clearly they are not thinking!!! Give them this book to read… though it is doubtful they would take the time. But any true historian won’t be able to put this book down! And will read it again and again!!

Lincoln as President

It really shows what Lincoln went through in the war years. You learn about everybody wanting something from him. People wanting him to give what they wanted no matter what it meant to the country.

This book is an editorialized compilation of stories and anecdotes about Abraham Lincoln. Published about 20 years after his death, these first person accounts are a vibrant look at a widely admired president. Topics range from why and when he grew his beard and put on the stovepipe hat to his role as commander in chief to his moodiness and his love for story telling. This book is freely available on Project-Gutenberg

Abraham Lincoln is America's Frodo Baggins; a very unlikely creature to accomplish extraordinary things. He was a plain, homely, poor, terribly sad man--but proved himself one of the greatest and wisest leaders of his people.

I found this biography to be an easy read, very fascinating. Highly recommended!

Incredibly done

A wealth of detail of the man comes from interviewing and assembling stories from those who knew him best. This book surrounds Lincoln and provides a picture for our generation of what a truly great man can and will do. I am convinced that Lincoln will be our country's greatest president.

One of the best books I have read on Abraham Lincoln. It is a book compiled a little while after he died. Apparently the author had people right him that had interaction with Abraham Lincoln and then compiled it into a book. It gives a great view into the life and character of Pres. Lincoln.
