Four women meet in an empty conference room. Each is slightly nervous, slightly intrigued and all are armed with steamy fantasies of their own creation. What was once a boring lunchtime literary club is transformed into something else, something forbidden, something that will make them forever friends.
Chick Lit at its worst. Contrived plot. Cardboard characters. The premise of a women's writing group choosing to focus on porn writing was intriguing, but this premise was quickly dropped in favor of the "women of different backgrounds come together in sisterhood" routine that is so old-hat. At one point, all the women characters show up at the hospital to support the nearly divorced woman in the delivery room. They refer to the baby as "our" baby and vow to support the woman and help raise the child forever. I think the reader was supposed to get teary eyed at this point. This reader thought, "Okay, she's ended her marriage, but she's rich, doesn't have to work for a living, is healthy and of normal intelligence. Why does she need five other women to help her raise her child?" The male characters are all shallow, energy-sucking, and ineffective. Instead of showing the women to be strong individuals, the author presents them as weak and needy unless they travel in a pack, like seventh-grade girls.
Y’all!! I just read this ridiculous little awesome book and it was just want i needed. I really need to balance my content better. I was on the brink. The Tuesday Erotica Club brought me back.
I sort of feel like I should give this 5 stars, but it's so far outside my usual genre, I can't be sure. It's one of those "women of different social status with very different lives brought together in a potentially adversarial but ultimately bonding experience, becoming great friends and conquering their various life difficulties" books.
But these four women, ranging in age from 23 to 50, from a secretary to a former debutante, one pregnant but getting divorced... meet during a writers group on their lunch hour on Tuesdays. They end up writing erotica, revealing some of their past traumas, hopes, dreams, fears, and disappointments. Their lives don't always interact smoothly (at all), but they all grow and progress and conquer what needs conquering, and it's beautifully written.
I usually like more event-driven books, more happily-ever-after, more sex, more laugh-out-loud (though there is plenty of humor here)... yet something about it gets to me.
The Tuesday Erotica Club was a bit of an accident - I was at the library and it actually fell off the shelf to my feet. I glanced at it as I picked it up and thought, Why not? As it turns out, this was a book that was fun to read.
Several women who work at the same law firm have a book club, meeting on their lunch hour in the firm's conference room. It bumbles along, eventually becoming a writers group - and not just any writers group, but one specifically to read each other's erotic writing. Some drop out, a rather eccentric young secretary barges in, and there are four club members. They meet, they share their writing, they begin to share bits of their lives, and finally they become real friends.
Lisa Beth Kovetz writes with a light touch. Her characters are a bit bigger than life, yet they become warm and complex and most of all, real, as the book moves along. This is definitely a book by a woman, about four women, for women readers. And don't let the title scare you off! Yes, there's some erotica - some good, some not - and yes, a few steamy scenes occur - but what this book is mostly about is friendship and how it happens.
Ah..the summary at the back of the book is much better then the book itself. Or perhaps I'm hoping too much from it...the conflict is not smooth nor sharp, the title and the content is not too much related except for the fact, four of them do have the Tuesday book club. And the characters are not exactly a group of close pal; well, perhaps 2 of them do. Well...the title is very eye-catching though, I must admit it...
Madeleine - 3 stars Well, with a title like that it's fair to assume that it is NOT actually erotica and it wasn't. The character development was very good although I think the author lost it towards the end. Too busy getting that bow tied. This was a fun read anout four different ladies realizing some truths about their lives. Often funny and surprising. I would recommend it for the beach.
While the title of this book caught my attention, I am so glad that I took the time out to read to the end. It is so much deeper than what the title suggest. It's about women, friendship, marriage, family, work relationships, etc. I am happy to see that Aimmee, Margot, Lux and Brooke bonded over their desire to write and later as support for each other. I am looking forward to adding Lisa Beth Kovetz to the list of my favorite authors.
This would actually be 2/15 stars I think. I read this book as my romance choice for my class. I went to the used book store and tried to pick the most modern looking book on the romance shelves (not the Fabio covers). It was cute, but I was not particularly attached to any of the characters. A quick, trashy read, like the title promises!
So far I'm not really getting into it..I'm about 1/3 through it, but I'll give it a little more time...we'll see. And we're back...I gave it a shot, got about half way through and decided I couldn't get into it. One of the characters was really annoying in her dialog and like i said, just couldn't get into it. It had such potential too.
I didn't find the book that humorous, overall. Maybe because the storyline of Aimee's pregnancy was too 'heavy' in comparison to the farcical situations of the other characters. I wish there was more narrative tension between the women's fictional alters and their 'real' life situations, such as the one between 'Atlanta Jane' and her creator, Margot.
This book was pretty funny. The premise is that rather than start a book club, a writers club was started at a law firm. People from all walks joined (from a partner to a young women from the secretary pool) and of course they decide to write erotica. Completely unbelievable, but at times laugh out loud funny! It's a good read for a day at the beach.
Decent premise, excruciatingly poor execution. The bad writing made me wonder if I was missing something. Did irony come back dressed as stiff, wooden description and negligible characterization?
Lo he de haber comprado en alguna de mis visitas al Sótano ya que el título me pareció divertido. A pesar de que la narración no me molestó, el contenido es para puro entretenimiento barato. Nada especial ni siquiera para comentar.
Really had to push myself to finish this one. I found the characters to be very annoying and unrelatable. The backround of seconday characters were really unnecessary as well. It was just a book that was all over the place! Not much more to say then that.
This is the worst book I have ever read. Seriously. Don't ever read it. If I could give it negative stars, I would. Just thinking about it makes me mad.
Got to page 36 or so of this book and gave up. Usually I like to give books a decent chance, but the characters in this book were so horrible I really couldn't be bothered.
This story was ok but I just thought it dragged but it surely could have been shorter. It wasn't horrible but I'm glad I checked it out of the library instead of buying it.
