1976. New Orleans. The Deschanel siblings are parents themselves now, and they must leave their own childhoods behind forever.
Charles, the playboy, is torn between love for his son and heir, and the prospect of having children with a woman who is far more welcoming and loving than his wife. Augustus, the fixer, now a widower, loses himself in the one thing that still gives his life meaning: Anasofiya. Colleen, the adherent, is married to the love of her life, and mother to a new daughter, but faces a new challenge as she is asked to step into the shoes of the family matriarch. Evangeline, the genius, falls nicely into her new world in Cambridge, but must soon confront the same fears she’d hoped to escape by leaving home. Maureen, the haunted, has her life turned upside down by a most unlikely connection.
Elizabeth, the anguished, prepares for adulthood by pouring herself into being a caretaker for her brother and niece, carefully avoiding her own future that she’s seen clearly, and horribly, so many times.
As the family progresses through the seventies, they’ll discover the power of secrets, lies, and a fate they cannot escape, no matter how wealthy or powerful they are.

“Grief was a path to madness”
The writing quality and world building are excellent. The story layout is great, with each sibling featured for a portion of the book. I love that the beginning of each book has the mom walking the hall studying her family portraits; it brings a sense of familiarity to the characters and setting. Several plot twists in this installment took me by surprise! I am really looking forward to the finale to see how the remaining siblings grow into their adult roles.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. For more reading recommendations, visit Book Junkie Reviews at www.abookjunkiereviews.wordpress.com
Witches and Warlocks make up an entire family that's in a constant state of crisis/survival mode. This dark fantasy is filled with conflict, growing pains, loss, sorrow, abuse, alcoholism, strong language, and spice. Be sure to check the trigger warnings before reading. The book is built in a detailed world with strong characters who grow/change throughout.
Another installment of the heartbreaking Deschanels' story. It is amazing to me that a fictional family can be so utterly real and multidimensional. These are characters who will haunt me, much like those in classic stories like The Thornbirds or Great Expectations or Gone with the Wind — characters whose lives span generations and encompass love and heartache and life and death and all of those things that come with a complete life.
I particularly found myself sympathizing with Augustus and his nearly debilitating desire to protect Anasofiya from any kind of harm. I've been there — being responsible for a tiny being and imagining everything that can possibly go wrong. It is terrifying, and it's surprisingly difficult to understand until you have been a parent. It was nice to see Augustus vulnerable, and particularly satisfying when he finally lets go of his resentment toward Ekatherina, freeing himself to be a parent, minus the crippling fear.
Charles continues to make his own life miserable, and although he's a sympathetic character, I can't help but feel he deserves it sometimes. I love the sniping that goes on between him and Cordelia. Maureen continues to suffer, and even when it seems like she may find some happiness, it is torn from her. That was pretty upsetting, especially since she seems to be one who deserves better. Evangeline is still finding herself, and Colleen is so happy, I just sense that something terrible is coming in the next book.
Yes, of course, I'll be reading the next book. These are my peeps, and I can't get enough of them.
By 1976 the Deschanel siblings are parents and their childhood is long gone. Charles is torn between love for his son by the wife he despises and the prospect of having children with a woman who is welcoming to him. Augustus is a widower and focuses on his daughter Anasofiya to the exclusion of almost everything else. Colleen is married to the love of her life as she has to step into the shoes of the family matriarch. Genius Evangeline is in her new world in Cambridge but has to confront fears she and hoped were left behind long ago and Maureen's life is turned upside down in an unlikely connection. Elizabeth tried hard to be a caretaker for Augustus and Anasofiya while avoiding seeing her own future. The family will keep on moving through the seventies realising the power of fate they cannot avoid mixed n with secrets, lies and deceit.
This was a rollercoaster as many of their lives seemed to implode around them while the more stable influences tried to hold everything together for the rest of the family. Many of the events from previous years in the series came to fruition and it was interesting to see how each of these progressed. I think these books benefit from reading them in sequence and it helps to understand the family members and history behind many of the relationships. Well written, everything was clear and easy to understand. Very enjoyable.
Buckle your seat belts because it's 1976 and things haven't changed and yeah it's a busy year. This time we once again am caught up on all of the happenings with the seven. Each year you would think things would get a little easier but it isn't. Each one of them is dealing with their own regrets, guilt and happenstance, nothing comes easy for them. New love is broken, what's already broken is shattered. Old fears battle with the current threats. Friends are kept at a price. It's a busy time where these siblings are involved and now we see names and actions that lead to what happens as we meet the children. To know what they all have individually gone through, what tried and tested their love and commitment to each other. To watch them excel, fall, break, heal and procreate. It's a wonderful read and this author handles each with ease. It's emotional but then all of this series is but it's also so rewarding.
I've really been enjoying this series and experiencing the events that mold these characters into what they become in the Crimson and Clover books. Although I've read that series, this book reveals some unexpected surprises and it makes me want to go back to the series and see if there were hints I missed. I continue to have a love/hate relationship with Charles, but my heart goes out to Elizabeth, who knows what her future holds and has to live with that knowledge. With one more book to go in The Seven, I'm anxious to see what happens.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Now that we are really into this series if you have read the proceeding ones, you find yourself eager to get into this one. As parents themselves now a different role is seen for them. These kids each have their own woes with you being tugged here and there. It still though also will have its own drama that will creep up and secrets exposed with us shaking our heads. The ups and downs will have us holding on taking in every minute with them all. great foundation by now with since the others read before this one is a world unfolding to the fullest. Can not wait but have to with wondering what is next.
This one... wow... i do not know why I am always surprised with how much happens in the 1 year of each book, but it's always a surprise and a good one. Not one of these has disappointed in anyway. I'm loving now getting to the point of meeting the babies and knowing from the other books who they will become! Seeing it all come together is great and I cant wait to see what the final book holds.
The Deschanel clan are all grown up now but the drama continues to follow them into adulthood. In someways there lives become even more complicated. This series is set in the years prior to the Crimson and Clover series and gives the reader insights where it all began. 1976 is the latest addition to the saga and does not disappoint!!! Drama and intrigue make for a roller coaster read!!!
