About the author

Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren, née Ericsson, (1907 - 2002) was a Swedish children's book author and screenwriter, whose many titles were translated into 85 languages and published in more than 100 countries. She has sold roughly 165 million copies worldwide. Today, she is most remembered for writing the Pippi Longstocking books, as well as the Karlsson-on-the-Roof book series.

The charming story of Kati, in her early 20s and making her way in the adult world on her own now that her guardian aunt has married. Kati and her best friend Eva make over the aunt's old apartment to their tastes (every girl should make over a dwelling before she gets married, Kati thinks, to be sure it's really a husband age wants and not just to exercise her domestic skills). Alas for Jan, her boyfriend and would-be fiancé, it seems Kati is happy with her independence. When Kati and Eva spend the summer in Italy they appreciate a greater breadth of history, culture and humanity and though Kati clings tightly to her purse in the crowded tourist traps she might just find her heart stolen along the way.

Yes, some of this is perhaps a little dated given it was written in the 1960s but I found most of that charming. Kati's views of Italians may tend toward the stereotypical at times but then so might her views of Swedes as she contrasts the two cultures. Overall I found it a breezy yet thoughtful and enjoyable read, grateful that I found both the Swedish and Italian sections fun for armchair travel.

I really enjoyed reading this vintage YA book written by Astrid Lindgren. It's special to me because I am happy to have my own copy, with color illustrations. I really love vintage YA books like this! Kati in Italy was different from Lindgren's children's books yet still delightful. I liked getting to know Kati and her friend Eva, and it was fun to travel along with them to various places in Italy. Kati has a boyfriend back home in Sweden, but perhaps she will find a new love in Italy! This book left me feeling happy and content!

Me lo he leído por nostalgia, básicamente. Porque me gustó mucho siempre Astrid y no sabía que también había escrito cosas para “jovencitas”. Y no es que fuera porque no es para mi edad, porque bien que me leí Los niños de Bullerbyn cuando ya no estaba en edad escolar y me encantó. Pero este es bastante simple y me ha decepcionado un poco.

Vilken fantastisk, makalös och fin bok. Jag var inte alls bekant med Lindgrens böcker för unga vuxna men efter att ha läst denna ska jag genast införskaffa mig de andra böckerna i serien. Nedan följer lite fina citat.

Om kärlek:

"..Lennart gick där och smålog och anade inget om min eländighet och förtvivlan. Jag grubblade mig fördärvad på hur jag skulle bära mig åt för att få träffa honom igen. I förbigående nämnde jag namnet på det hotell där vi skulle bo i Rom. Fem gånger nämnde jag förbigående namnet på vårt hotell i Rom."

Skrattade högt:

"Du, om några timmar ska vi se Neapel och sedan dö, är inte det roligt?
Jo, det var roligt, medgav jag för mig själv. Åtminstone om man fick hoppa över Neapel och bara dö!"

Om snubbar som spelar Wonderwall, redan 1952:

"Tror du han tänker sjunga?", viskade jag ängsligt till Jan.
"Jag inser inte hur vi skulle kunna hindra honom", viskade Jan tillbaka.

Verglichen mit dem ersten Teil von Astrid Lindgrens Kati-Reihe empfinde ich den zweiten als deutlich schwächer. Die Erzählweise Katis ist noch immer spritzig, witzig und charmant, aber sie gerät hier und da ins Stocken, wenn sie sich zu sehr in ihre Fantasien und Liebesschwüre verliert. Ihre Wegbegleiter sind allesamt sympathisch, vielleicht zu sympathisch. Natürlich fehlt es wie bereits in ihrer USA-Reise nie an intelligenten Beschreibungen der Städte, Plätze sowie Menschen und ihr Leben dort, was ich besonders an den Büchern mag. Aber dieses Mal passt es nicht wirklich zu der Absicht der Autorin, ihre Heldin sich endlich ernsthaft verlieben zu lassen. Sie war durchaus bemüht einige Spannungseffekte durch unverhoffte wie witzige Begebenheiten zu erzielen, aber richtig gepackt, hat mich die Geschichte bis zum Schluss nicht. Oder zumindest nicht mehr so wie vor dreizehn Jahren, als ich das Buch zum ersten Mal las.

Surprised to find an Astrid Lindgren book I'd never heard of, I had to buy it. Even more surprised when it turned out to be not a children's book at all but one of a few of the young adult/adult fiction books she wrote (that I never knew she did!).
(Slightly confusing also that this was published by Oetinger, which - while probably having the rights for anything Lindgren wrote - specialises in children's lit.)

"Kati in Italy" is the second volume of a "Kati" series (of three), but I found it perfectly comprehensible and readable without having read the first one.

Written and set in 1952, this is a romance/growing-up story of a, for her time, modern and independent woman.

Kati, a 22-year-old shorthand typist, lives on her own in Stockholm. She has a best friend, Eva, from work, and is in a fast-fading long-term relationship with Jan. He wants to get married quickly, even though he's constantly finding fault with Kati – she is beginning to notice that that is not something she wants to continue for the rest of her life.
When Kati and Eva win some money in the lottery, they decide to go on a trip to Italy – a group bus trip, taking you from north to south in ten days or so, so there's ample opportunity to get to know your fellow travellers, who provide amusing minor characters.
In Venice, Kati meets Lennart, a fellow Swede, and falls head over heels in love. The two meet on and off over the the rest of the holiday, with Lennart „happening“ to show up wherever the group stays next. Kati can't think of much else than Lennart for the rest of the trip, and after some doubts and accidents and intrigues and such, they finally get together in Naples.
Personally, I found Lennart only a very marginal improvement on Jan, so wasn't overly thrilled with the romance. Overall, though, it was an enjoyable, humorous story about a spirited young woman.

Kirjaston poistohyllystä löysin Astrid Lindgreniä jota en ennen ollut lukenut. Kati asuu räväkän ystävänsä Evan kanssa Tukholmassa ja on kihloissa Janin kanssa. Kun tytöt voittavat veikkauksessa, he ostavat matkaliput Italiaan ja opiskelevat muutaman tärkeän fraasin kuten “kylläpä herralla on tuliset silmät.” Kirjan Italia-osuus on aika perinteinen matkakertomus, hauskojen sattumusten ryydittämänä. Kati löytää rakkauden ja kirjoittaa Jarille erokirjeen. Kirjasta kyllä löytää Peppi Pitkätossu -henkeä, 1950- luvun nuoret naiset ovat itsenäisiä ja iloisia, polttavat tupakkaa, juovat valkoviiniä ja tanssivat. Janista todetaan, että vaikka hän sanoi rakastavansa Katia, hän yritti jatkuvasti muuttaa tätä. Nykyajantytölke tämä kirja ei ehkä uppoa, minusta se on kiva.

Kuigi Astrid Lindgren on üks mu lemmikuid kirjanikke üldse, ei olnud ma tema täiskasvanutele kirjutatud lugusid enne lugenud. "Kati Itaalias" osutus üheks lõbusaks romaanikeseks, mis meenutas endagi 20ndate algust. Kati ja tema sõbrannad pakatavad nooruslikust elujanust, kuid autor on seadnud nende naiivsuse ning intelligentsuse sellisesse tasakaalu, et vanemal lugejal ei hakka tegelaste pärast piinlik.

Lindgreni mõnusas keelepruugis antakse edasi nii elu-, olustiku- kui ka tundekirjeldusi, kuigi tõlkes oli vahel tehtud kummalisi sõnavalikuid. Pärast lugemist tekkis igal juhul tahtmine nii Itaaliasse kui ka Rootsi sõita.

Милая совершенно Кати у милой совершенно Линдгрен. Мало кто умеет так талантливо писать о счастье и вплетать в это столько легкого юмора. Как и все остальные книги о Кати - рассказ о жизни, замаскированный под травелог молодой девушки. Очаровательная старомодность 50-х прилагается.

Книга одной цитатой: "Нет, я не утверждаю, что плавание в гондоле - средство от несчастной любви. Наоборот! Но оно помогает её переносить. Думаешь при этом, что, несмотря на все, - прекрасно быть влюблённой, а особенно прекрасно - жить на свете!"

А, ну и еще традиционная полезная фраза из шведско-итальянского разговорника: "Дерни меня за усы!" :)

Complessivamente si tratta di un libro interessantissimo, molto moderno e scritto in uno stille rapido, ironico, indipendente.
Mi ha colpito la rappresentazione giovanile, indipendente e romantica al tempo stesso.
E sono rimasta affascinata da come è stata descritta l'Italia dell'immediato dopoguerra, riconoscendo location, tradizioni ed emozioni.
Consigliatissimo.

Även om jag alltid har med mig en hel hög med böcker så är det någonting med den där bokhyllan jag har hemma hos mina föräldrar som gör att jag får lust att återupptäcka gamla favoriter. Jag hittade den här (Kati på Kaptensgatan) och kom ihåg att jag tyckte mycket om den så det blev en omläsning. Stockholm på 50-talet, två bästa vänner som reser till Italien, och lite kärlek. Medryckande och humoristiskt språk.

Der zweite Band ist die heiterste und sommerlichste Geschichte der Kati-Trilogie: Kati reist mit Freundin Eva per Bus nach Italien - und alles erinnert an den Hepburn-Film "Ein Herz und eine Krone". Bis sie in Italien angelangt sind, gibt es schon einiges zu erleben, in Italien selbst ... ach, das muss man selbst lesen, am besten im Sommerurlaub auf Balkonien.

En av Astrid Lindgrens okända böcker. Den utkom första gången 1952. kati är sekreterare på en advokatbyrå. Hon är påhittig, orädd och rolig. I den här berättelsen gör hon tillsammans med en väninna en resa till Italien.
