I have a 1977 hardback reprint in French from Dupuis of a book first published in 1974. This volume contains on the one hand a story first published in 1959 in Le Parisien Libéré and mainly drawn by Roba together with Franquin on a story by Greg, and on the other a hotchpotch of short stories and one pagers starring the Marsupilami, dating from the 1960s. The pages of the book are also decorated by much later drawings by Franquin in the 1970s.

The titular story, Tembo Tabou is a throwback to the worst aspects of the series. Here we have another adventure set in Africa with a white saviour plot and horrendously racist depictions of Pygmies. How this was published again in the 1970s beggars belief. The story itself isn’t much, it’s merely a rip off of an earlier episode, Le Gorille a Bonne Mine, with bad guys terrorising the locals to protect a gold mine. Really disappointing. What were Dupuis thinking in publishing this?

The additional materials are okay, merely adequate filling. Overall, this volume merits the lowest score as it should not have happened: 1/5.

Veldig kjedelig. Dårlig historie. Dårlig vitser.
Ganskr rasistisk egentlig. Man får veldig hvit man frelse feeling her.
