Sigh. Someday I won't be betrayed by a series about a woman whose priorities are something other than getting married and having a family ending with her getting married and having a family, but it is not today.

Absolutely beautiful ending. *happy tears*

I give this series a 4.75/5 stars!!! I LOVED this series. The storyline was so unique. Yes, a little strange but it came together so well!!! Other people may say it was dragged out but honestly, I don’t think so. The mangaka built up Sumire and Momo’s relationship so well… I could feel the love between them when it finally happened. I never felt that with Hasumi.
This series has romance, drama and comedy!!!! It’s a great josei series. I highly recommend it!!!!

Synopsis from Volume 1 via Goodreads:

Life was good for Sumire Iwaya... until the day she discovers her boyfriend is cheating on her, she gets demoted at work, and her life spirals toward the dumps. Things take a turn for the better when she crosses paths with Momo, a homeless guy with a colorful past who puts a bounce in her step and a shake in her hips. It takes two to tango, but when Sumire's first love reappears in her life, will this be the last waltz?
__________

I have finished reading all the volumes and wanted to signify my fondness of it all with a simple highlighted review; which includes facts from Wikipedia below.

Hilarious. Sexy. Thoughtfully written.
Josei manga series. Contemporary romance.

Beautiful characters with real world social issues and decisions about: career growth, family values, friendships, finding happiness, and balancing it all.

I loved all the subtle elements of S/M, too. (◕‿-)

Written and illustrated by Yayoi Ogawa. This was my first Japanese josei manga series that I have read by the author, and I truly look forward to reading more from her.

I would also love to watch the film adaptation and tv drama series (plus the reboot) by the end of the year.

*** Will edit this review as soon as I have done so! ***

(Seek out the complete 14 volume manga series on Amazon via Prime Reading. I borrowed and read in its entirety for free. ♡)

Wikipedia Side Notes:
• The series first appeared as a single chapter work, named Pet, that appeared in the June 2000 issue of Kiss Carnival, where it ran for four chapters. It was then transferred to Kiss later in 2000 where it ran until 2005. It was renamed to Kimi wa Petto after the fifth chapter.

• Tokyopop licensed the series for English-language release in North America and gave the series its English name of Tramps Like Us. It released the first volume in August 2004 and the final volume in February 2008. As of August 2009, the English edition is out of print.

• It was serialised by Kodansha and was released in 14 volumes between 2000 and 2005, with an additional side-story volume being released in 2002. The volumes, barring the side-story volume, were published in English and German by Tokyopop, in French by Kurokawa and in Italian by Star Comics.

• The manga was adapted to a TV drama series that aired in Japan on TBS in 2003, and a South Korean film in 2011. The manga is adapted to a second, reboot, TV drama series aired on Fuji TV in 2017 with totally different cast.

Volume 14 was kind of a weird ending to the series. It got a bit trippy ... which I thought was out of place with the conventions of reality that were established in the prior 13 volumes.

I also thought that meeting the families was a bit rushed. Ogawa took care to give quirky personalities to all of the family members, and I think there was comedy genius waiting to be exploited there, but wasn't.

And Sumire herself ... she's very different at the end than she was at the beginning. Is she healed, or did she sell out? She's obviously a lot happier as the series ends, so maybe she's healed. I just keep wondering "what is she going to do now?!?" But that may be my own bias coming through.

Despite the somewhat odd ending, the series as a whole still gets five stars from me. :)

I do hope that Tokyopop or one of the other English publishers picks up more of Yayoi Ogawa's works - Ogawa-san is obviously an extremely talented artist and storyteller, and I would love to read more of her stories!

Okay, so this Manga was really different from the rest... My first full josei one. And I could relate a little with Sumire, how she got that tough look and the reasons behind it, but the whole pet-thing, although believable in the beginning... and continued fantastically, and ended nicely too ( I can only feel happy for her and Momo (Takeshi ;p)).
However, the ending was rushed, really happy-go-lucky type ( different from the rest of the story, where dramas kept unfolding), in a way it was nice, relaxing and fun to see that there won't be any hassles for them though. So I'm not complaining.
I liked the magical twist to the story at times. The 'en' concept, the way they saw the sunken village, and how sumire travels back to give hope to Takeshi... I liked them all.
In short, this manga was really fun, dramatic at times and enjoyable. I recommend it to people who want a break from the Shoujo and Shounen world...

It's absolutely one of the most underrated mangas out there, I'm truly hoping for an anime adaption!

The story is unique and completely new to me, I was bewildered by it at first, but then it started to grow on me, just like the art, which is different to regular mangas. The love story of Takeshi "Momo" and Sumire is cute, and sheds a new and fun light on Older women/Younger men relationships.

I absolutely loved Momo, his passion and dedication for Sumire is amazing. and Sumire kinda reminds me of myself (we both are journalists! :D), and we have many traits in common, so I had fun reading this.

It's the story of an older working women who takes in a younger man, as a pet, into her house, until their relationship starts to change little by little, evolving to their own happy ending! <3

*WARNING: This is more of a whole series review vs a strictly Vol 14 review*

Tramps Like Us is possibly one of my favorite manga series as I can relate heavily with Sumire on a lot of things. However it did seem to drag around Vol 10-11. Vol 13-14 probably could've been condensed in to one volume. As I didn't really care to know what happened to the side characters after Sumire & Takeshi became an item. If anything there should've been more of them in the final volumes. Series as a whole is 4 Stars but Vol 14 is a 3 as it could've tied up a lil stronger. Overall it's a fun sometimes heart wrenching series that focuses on an older female character trying to figure out what she wants in life.

Well, we got to a happy ending finally (by we, I mean me... Finally reread the first 10 volumes and found the rest after 10 or so years!)

What a great read. I know it's rude, but I still resent Hasumi a bit, despite the situation. Then again, I hope he's okay?

The overall story was very sweet, there were some side stories, but it felt like there really wasn't much filler in this story. Even the final chapters gave us a bit of closure before ending the story!

However, I wish that we saw more about how their relationship wasn't conventional at the end, how traces of the master/pet relationship were there instead of them becoming "normal"... At least they're happy.

But I wonder if Sumire was asexual? A question for another time.

It feels like watching a dorama.
The plot developed slowly, with significant hints here and there, and then, there goes the important twist near the end.

Momo is too good to be true, though.
But awww, who wouldn't fall for him??

All in all, the series ends well.
With sweet 'd awww' moments that isn't too saccharine.
With hilarious way that made you questioning the mangaka sanity.
and lastly, it ends with magic.
(yeah, 'magical' might sounds too much, but I can't find any other word to describe it.)

it turns out Sumire and Momo did really have an 'en'.

This review is for the series as a whole with 4 out of 5 stars

WARNING: This review contains some spoilers so read at your own risk.

I first heard of this story when I stumbled upon a jdrama which was based on this manga a few years ago. I really find the idea of a person being someone else’s pet amusing. I know what you’re thinking, wahahaha. This one isn’t kinky at all, it was actually pretty wholesome.

Kimi wa pet is a story of Sumire who stumbled upon a box containing a young Takeshi. She fed him and found out that he had nowhere to go. Takeshi wants to stay, but he can only stay if he becomes her pet. Thinking that saying such preposterous things would discourage Takeshi, Sumire was surprised he agreed. Both of their lives after that encounter changed forever. Was it for good or bad?

This story started with introducing Sumire who I would say is a perfect example of a “strong independent woman”. That would have been a great thing right? Unfortunately because of it, her boyfriend of 5 years cheated on her and made her feel that it was all because of her that it had happened. She is also not that well liked in their office because she looks really stiff and strict. But her life took a turn after taking in Takeshi whom she’d named Momo, which was her dead pet’s name.

Kimi wa pet is quite a lengthy read for a josei so it includes a lot of scenes not only focusing about the relationship between the main characters but also about some of the side characters as well. And speaking of characters, this story has a lot of them so I find it hard to keep track of them sometimes. Just like most manga that I’ve read, Kimi wa pet has a lot of very funny scenes that left me laughing my heart out. Maannn! I still can’t stop myself from laughing just thinking about those scenes, lol.

Aside from the happy ones, Kimi wa pet had a lot of scenes that I really hated. Unfortunately this story contains one of the things I hate in romance, which is the third party. I just keep on hating the other girl that I also ended up hating the other love interest of Sumire as well. He was actually a pretty ideal guy and I love how he reacts to Sumire. You can really see how he adores her, plus they really look good together. He can be pretty funny too lol, just too bad he wasn’t able to keep that image for me until the end. Although I kind of pity him a little in the end.

As for the main character Sumire, I really liked my first impression of her. She’s a really tough chick and she doesn’t accept b*llsh*t. She can be really harsh at times but I guess that’s just how she is. Little by little, I’ve got to really see the real her and why she’s like that. She looks really tough but she can be fragile too. I really like her character, but I just hated how she can’t always voice out her real feelings and how she always delays informing her boyfriend about her pet, that in the end, I don’t think he ever found out. I also liked Momo’s influence on her, ever since they were living together as master and pet, Sumire was finally able to create connections with other people and express herself. I just find it really interesting getting to know her character in each chapter.

Momo on the other hand is very fun to read. I usually don’t like childish characters, but his childishness is not in an annoying way. He is also very outgoing so it’s hard to imagine those hardships he experienced in the past and in the present too. When he’s with Sumire, he’s very childish and playful which makes him look like a real pet dog, lol. He ran away from home. That’s why he doesn’t have a place of his own, so despite his age you could say that he knows a lot about life. I guess he also has this promiscuous side to him, but I think it was only seen around 2 times while I was reading this story. He’s years younger than Sumire but he taught her a lot of things. I also LOVE how he loves Sumire so much, I just can’t imagine how he’s been feeling all those times while Sumire is still in a relationship with her boyfriend, who is also her first love.

As for the romance, I guess it’s already pretty obvious who’s going to be the main couple right? There were a lot of annoying characters who really irritated me but I guess that just helps Sumire realize whom she really wants to be with. The hint is actually there in its early chapters, but I like how the mangaka transitioned her feelings until she finally realized that she’s in love. Their official relationship started in a long distance romance, but I love how the two of them made it work. I particularly like their virtual date, it was really cute. I also love the fact that the two of them didn’t sacrifice anything in their life just to make their relationship work, even though it could mean that they’ll be in a long distance relationship.

I also love the fact that this manga didn’t just end after the two of them were finally in a relationship but we’ve got to read more! It didn’t just focus on the relationship between the two but also the friendship between Sumire and her best friend. Actually, this manga didn’t just show me romance, but it also gave me life lessons and realizations that we could apply in our daily life. We’ve also got to read about friendships between the characters and work life (especially about relationships between coworkers). Isn’t that nice?

Kimi wa pet is highly recommended for every romance lover. I am certain that this will really entertain you, *wink.

I loved the 2003 drama so I bought and read this manga — the first manga I've ever finished! The unusualness of Sumire and Mimi's dynamic is what drew me in, so it was annoying that as the story progressed, Sumire began to adhere more and more to a traditional heteronormative relationship: quitting her job, getting married, and having kids. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's completely contrary to how she was portrayed in the beginning with seemingly no reason.

She also seems to be similarly unhappy with her relationship with Takeshi (as opposed to "Momo") as she was with Hasumi — rarely or never taking initiative romantically/sexually, comically insecure about whether he wants her/her worth to him, and having to give up her work and reroute her life to be with him.

To me, it seemed clear at the beginning why she was more comfortable with Momo than Hasumi — taking care of Momo like an owner, and in turn, Momo's loyalty to her as a pet, was a more comfortable way for her to express affection than the typical heteronormative structure of her relationship with Hasumi. I fail to see how her relationship with Momo is much different now that he is Takeshi, as the previous dynamic which made her comfortable in the first place is now gone.

There was some enjoyable parts and I enjoyed the art style, but unfortunately the heteronormativity and cliché direction of Sumire and Takeshi's relationship was a total let-down.

Volume 14 is the last of the series and it is such a satisfying ending. We get to meet Takeshi's mom as well as the rest of the sisters. Then there is Sumire's family. There is a bit of future forward as well as a dip into the fantastical which isn't out of the blue given the little forays throughout the series.

Yet the real gem is Rule 80: Girls. I love LOVE that there is one chapter purely dedicated to Sumire and Yuri's friendship and how important it is. I love that it isn't given the short-shrift and it makes a really good, consistent series tip into great, as far as I am concerned.

I have to admit that when I started this re-read, I figured I'd finally be able to give up my hard copies but no. Not even close. After re-reading, I can't let them go. This series is a keeper and a joy to read.

Overall series rating 3.75⭐️
The start of this series is rough and there are too many filler chapters and the main plot of the book goes on for a tad to long. Also got to be a little colour blind because there are a few red flags scattered in there.
HOWEVER when it finally gets to the romance (about vol 10 is when it starts to get good) it is so sweet and wholesome and it actually gets very funny. To be honest those last couple of volumes really do make up for all the crappy bits in the middle. The love that the two main characters develop for each was such a green flag moment, so much support from both sides. It was wonderful.
Overall I would recommend this as an age gap romance (woman is the older one) just be warned it’s not perfect but it does make up for it in the end.

I’m not crying, you’re crying. It took a long time to get to the point where the fem MC and her bf broke up, like a really long time, and there was a lot of unrelated work talk, but all that kinda made the story a little bit more realistic, like I got to see how the MCs changed day by day, and even within the course of one day, as emotions changed. There was also and edge to the story that made it just the right amount of angsty. So unbelievably cute and the first “cougar” story I’ve read that was done tastefully and believably. Well done, well done.

S TIER! GOD TIER! MASTER CLASS! FAVORITE OF ALL TIME!

OMGoodness, this manga had me 100% obsessed, anxious, stressed, waking up in the middle of the night thinking about it, in LOVE! WTF am I supposed to do with myself now?? HUH??? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW????

I cried, I laughed out loud, I felt too many feelings.
I'm squeezed out, dried up. I don't know what else to say except that I loved this series with my whole heart, desperately.

It has a few peculiar chapters, but it's a nice ending to this series.

I find hard to review each volume separately now because... I already read all of them and kinda lost track of what happened in each volume. But overall I really enjoy this series, it's different, I love the art style and the care for each episodic character is impressive too. I love how complex the characters are and I love to see them grow with each volume.

I only like/enjoyed vol. 1 and 2, and by the time the main characters got together as a couple (who I loved at the beginning), I just didn't care anymore about them or their relationship at that point anymore. The only character I liked at the end of this series was the pet 'Momo', and he has ALWAYS deserved better than what he got after book 2.

Binge-reading this series in two days hhhh.

Well, this manga has a decent ending, BUT, honestly, I think there's still more room for deep conflicts and characters development. The characters and theme is good... it such a waste ;;w;;

Btw, clap-clap for Takeshi with short-hair! Looks so yum!

(Btw, I remember an artist whom I said reminded me of Takeshi. It's BTS' JIMIN ehe.)

Ciao! ♡

The ending. My heart. I have to say that this is truly one of my favorite manga out there. It’s just so well done, original, and simple yet complex. I like that it took a simple premise and really showed how relationships are. It explored that well - friendship and romance. Seriously am amazing manga.

i honestly couldn’t predict who was gonna end up with who until the very end. this series was really good. i don’t think the story needed to drag out over 14 volumes but i really did enjoy reading a story that took place over a few years. overall i enjoyed the series but i can’t see myself rereading it just because it was so long when it really didn’t need to be.
