The first human exploration vessel has been manufactured. All it needs is a mission.
Horizon is a state-of-the-art vessel, a hybrid born of Keppe technology and human innovation. Magnus accepts the role of captain as the new ship is launched on its maiden voyage. Dean’s thrilled to take a back seat on the adventure, but things don’t ever work out as planned for our hero.
As Horizon heads into unknown space, they search for a way to reverse the miniaturization of an entire world in their possession. With recent attacks on Haven, the crew is on edge as they encounter a strange new space station, and witness one of the V-shaped invaders docked on arrival.
Join the newly formed crew of the flagship Horizon as they learn to work as a team and halt a looming invasion from happening on Haven.
New Horizon is book nine in the best-selling Survivors series.
Plenty of fiction, zero science and now the ultimate McGuffin in a 4 year old that discovers new powers whenever the plot requires. A plot that’s so full of holes it has the density of graphene aerogel, and the gravitas to match.
It's hard to believe that after nine books in this fantastic series the stories still feel so fresh and new. If this series had been published before Star Wars, they would have made this as the blockbuster movies. As our survivors, from an event that nearly wiped out all earth beings, continue their adventures expanding into outer space they create new alliances with many sentient alien species. Some are less willing to join the growing alliance and only join after serious conflicts. One of the things I especially enjoy about all the alien species depicted is their fundamental desires for similar creature comforts and social & family relationships as humans. And, just as with humans, there are good and evil traits among them all. One of these characters causes me to wonder, which is more troublesome, a brilliant criminal or one who thinks he is but is the bumbling-idiot sleazy con-artist that Sergio is? He is my candidate for the best, worst criminal ever. Another thing that I really enjoy, and have commented upon in earlier reviews of books in this series, is how well the author wraps up each book so they can stand on their own. There's no doubt they would be best enjoyed starting with book one (as I have) but, they can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone book. I often suggest to series authors that they would help both new readers, as well as us loyal readers if they would include a summary of the preceding books and, an appendix of Who's Who and the various species involved. Even readers who have been following from the beginning may have read many books in the same genre between each book in the series and may need a little reminder to get back up to speed. Nathan doesn't need this as much as many other authors because there is less wait time between his books than normal. And, he includes some historical background when involving characters from earlier events.
The new Alliance of Worlds starship Horizon is complete and ready for adventure!
Like visiting with old friends, the Survivors cast returns for fresh adventure and all the old gang returns. Magnum, Dean, Natalia and Mary are joined by Suma, her new boyfriend Silo, Slate and his new girlfriend, are all onboard and prepared to find the world where the ore Rutelium is mined. At the far reaches of the galaxy they find an adventure on a frozen miniature world and on the source of Rutelium. Jules is coming into her Iskos powers, which cause no small concern for her parents.
Returning to the series is like visiting with old friends. Like pulling on your outdoor bluejeans: worn and soft in all the right places, roomy and oh-so comfortable! The characters are all present again and meet all expectations. The cast face new adventures, new friends, old enemies, and constant adventure! A great storyline continues the great saga of the Survivors! Another great read!
What a wonderful book. Dean takes his family aboard Horizon, captained by Magnus, who also has his family on board, to travel to unknown space. But Magnus has a hidden agenda on where they are going. Mion V9. But first, they have to stop at a space station to get directions. After completing a task before being given these directions, they're off. It helps to relieve space boredom that there is a portal in the center of the ship to help them travel to other worlds and check in with other friends. Meantime, Jules' Iskios powers are growing as she tries to keep this hidden from everyone. She knows her father has to help the frozen people, even though at first no-one understands what she means. And things develop from there. I loved this book, Nathan, and can't wait for the next in the series.
I'm not going to review each and every of the 18, so far, books in this series because it would be exhausting. Suffice it to say, as I just this morning told my son, to have the talent to write a series of 18 books (so far) and each and every book be as engaging, thrilling and be able to pull a reader right into the story instead of being a spectator to it is so rare and his books do that. From book 1 to the current book 18. Also, these are not novellas or short stories. Each in this series is a full on NOVEL. I've been opened to genres I never thought I'd be interested in before and it's writers like Nathan Hystad that make that possible .... that make reading ..... an important part of my life.
I enjoyed this instalment of this sci-fi /post-apocalyptic series because it carries on the story as a whole and moves on to 'new horizons'. I like how Jules is developing and how her inclination to help is powerful, even at a very young age - the mystery surrounding her is intriguing.
The cast of characters is vast but they gel exceptionally well. The plots intertwine and use the strengths and weaknesses of the characters. I like the idea of an alliance of worlds and the array of unusual lifeforms and planets. Travelling through portals is especially amazing.
The writing style is good and I look forward to seeing where the story will go next.
If you thought for one moment Dean Parker would sit at home raising his kids, you were wrong. Despite having a preschooler and a pregnant wife, he always gets wrapped up in something. This time it’s to travel to an unknown system to return a planet and it’s people back to life but first, a new enemy has arrived and a trip through an asteroid field is never as easy as it seems.
The Survivors books have become addicting to read. The story has grown around the Survivors and keeps continually bringing in more characters. This reading is truly entertaining !
This is a great novel and a great series. The characters, the adventure and the action are all great. The story and the characters keep growing and changing as we watch.
Familiar characters fighting new enemies, solving new problems, introducing new aliens, all in a well written plot that holds your interest. This is a must read episode in this continuing space opera.
Enjoyed seeing Dean and Mary and precious Jules finally getting more time together to bond as a family. Appreciated the way they are open to letting Jukes use her special gifts to help others even if it might do her harm.
The Alliance's first exploration ship out on a mission to secure some mining planet and solve the mystery of the shrunken world. Dean in the same constant battle between staying back and doing the recaster thing.
Truly enjoyed the story. All the characters are all well developed and believable. Truly looking forward to reading the final book and hoping it's not the final book.
I just finished book 9. Again Nathan sets is on a new adventure. The characters told you into their lives, whether it's joy or sadness. I can't wait for Academy to come out. I've read all his books and it's one adventure after another. Qudo's!
