The Protective One

Rate this book
From a “ skilled storyteller who reminds the reader that faith can help us survive the ups and downs in life” ( RT Book Reviews ), Shelley Shepard Gray weaves a moving and unforgettable exploration of love and friendship.

The tragic and untimely death of an old friend has made Elizabeth Anne rethink not only her priorities but her courtship with David, her longtime neighbor and suitor. Though he’s Mennonite like herself and has her parents’ approval, she feels that a spark is missing. Desperate for a change, she breaks things off—wondering if, perhaps, she’s the one who’s missing a spark.

When her family becomes upset with her decision, E.A. turns to her friends for support. One of them is Will, a man with a good heart who has always been there for her. As the two bond over their shared struggle to navigate a future that everyone else seems to have figured out, they are surprised to realize that they have feelings for each other.

But E.A.’s world takes a sudden turn when she realizes that she’s not the only one struggling—Marta, one of her sewing students, is in desperate need of protection. With the aid of Will and several other friends, Elizabeth Anne begins a journey that is more difficult and rewarding than she could have ever imagined...one that ultimately enables her to find everything she’s been searching for.

In this latest installment in the Walnut Creek series that “both delights and surprises” (Leslie Gould, bestselling author), Shelley Shepard Gray pens a powerful and poignant tale of friendship, courage, and love.

The third book in the Walnut Creek series, The Protective One really was an excellent book.
I have read the other books in the series but don't worry if you haven't the author does fill you in on the backstory from the other books.
A group of friends are there for each other in each of the books and very supportive of each other as they deal with some heavy and sensitive issues. The author really presents the subject manner in a respectful and realistic way. I am impressed.
I enjoyed reading about friends falling in love in this easy to read sweet Amish romance.
I look forward to reading many more stories by this prolific author.

THE PROTECTIVE ONE is the 3 book in the series by Shelley Shepard Gray called Walnut Creek.

THE PROTECTIVE ONE starts off increasing the reader’s heart rate right away. This story is about Elizabeth Anne, one of the eight that the series is based on. This book is also about Will, who like Elizabeth Anne, is struggling to figure out his future. They were eight friends who are Amish, Mennonite, and Englisch. Everyone is shocked to learn that Andy, one of The Eight, has committed suicide. The Eight have been friends since they were kids and have always looked to Andy as their leader of their group. The seven remaining members are still coming to terms with Andy’s death, grieving for their friend, and struggling to heal.

THE PROTECTIVE ONE centers around abuse in more than one circumstance and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. Shelley Shepard Gray has developed THE PROTECTIVE ONE so well and it touches on so many important issues that could effect anyone’s life. There is an abusive relationship, a bully, and a stalker. My heart immediately goes out to Elizabeth Anne and I just want to hug her. Will she ever be able to make peace with what has happened? While she is struggling with all of this, Will just wants to protect her, no matter what she is dealing with. The rest of The Eight want to help her as well, but Elizabeth Anne is mortified that they will find out what she is really like.

She also realizes that she isn’t the only one who needs help. Her sewing student Marta, has many secrets and Elizabeth Anne knows something bad is going on in Marta’s life. But she won’t confide in Elizabeth Anne. Marta realizes that she has someone who will be there for her, despite the fact that she is English. Throughout their time together, Marta gradually becomes stronger and plans her options.

Shelley Shepard Gray sure knows how to make the reader feel as if they are right there at the kitchen table with this gang of friends, with all their troubles and THE PROTECTIVE ONE is exactly that! She made me sad, then the next moment I was smiling and giggling out loud! You can never go wrong with a Shelley Shepard Gray book if you are a fan of the Christian fiction genre. All of her characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride. As you are reading, you will find yourself cheering for all of them, praying they can work out their problems and be happy once again. You will also wonder how much heartache a group of friends can stand before it completely breaks down and splits.

THE PROTECTIVE ONE is a heart tugging story filled with patience, loneliness, heartbreak, and love that will hold you hostage until the very last page. Once I started this heartwarming story, it was very hard to put down! I really prayed that Will would be able to convince Elizabeth Anne that he was ready to move forward with his feelings for her and that she deserved to be loved and cherished. Shelley Shepard Gray isn’t afraid to write about subjects out of the norm as far as the Christian Fiction genre goes. Oh, as a warning to the reader, keep the tissues handy and do not read the ending in a public place unless you don’t mind crying in front of strangers! I’m so excited to continue catching up on all of Shelley Shepard Gray’s previous books. Now I have to patiently wait for the next book in this wonderful series!

Everyone of the main characters is trying to move on from the tragedy concerning Andy, but they are trying to do it alone and it just isn’t working. Someone needs to pull them all together and remind them of their faith. THE PROTECTIVE ONE teaches us that all religions need to rely on others, no matter how we are raised. The remaining Eight are a group of tight knit loyal friends who always have each other’s backs. My emotions were all over the place as they always are reading a Shelley Shepard Gray story. I loved how she made me feel all of the anxiety and tension that the characters were dealing with. Besides all of that, there is also romance, forgiveness, and healing. A perfect way to spend the day on the couch with your favorite beverage, lost in the pages of a heart tugging but beautiful story.

There's an understated power in this poignant story about friendship and love and the courage to embrace change. I'm finding it hard to find words to explain the impact it had on me. That's because this author knows how to bring heart and depth into what, on the surface, might appear to simply be a sweet Amish romance. Well, it is that -- but so much more!

The Protective One is the third book in Gray's Walnut Creek series which centers around seven friends who vow to stick together after the tragic suicide of a dear friend. Each book manages to give some quality page time to all the friends as a group, even while focusing on one hero and heroine's love story. And things are always complicated because that's life. Love the realism the author brings into the plot through sensitive issues and struggles.

In this story, it's the various forms of domestic abuse. And while that topic is heavy, Gray approaches it with compassion and hope. The big takeaway for me was how our personal faith journey can prepare us to act with discernment when offering friendship and support to someone dealing with abuse...and even enable us to recognize more subtle forms in our own lives.

Having said all that, this isn't in any way an oppressive downer of a book! There's plenty of humour, and friendly shenanigans as E.A and Will navigate their way to a happily ever after future of their own.

Absolutely loved The Protective One. If I could I would give it more than five Stars. I thought the eye catching cover was beautiful. The book was an easy read and with excellent content. Centered around abuse in more than one circumstance, it had this reader on the edge of her seat. The love and support E.A., nickname for Elizabeth Anne, gave to the victim, while in some ways being a victim herself, was heart warming.
Elizabeth Anne was being courted by her next door neighbor David. Their courtship was a half hour each Saturday night and lacking of any romance whatsoever. David left the impression that he was doing Elizabeth a favor courting her. Finally she got the courage to break up with him. David didn't take this well and refused to except the breakup. He told lies about her to her parents and friends. He was insistent that she rekindle their relationship to the point of stalking her.
Will Kurtz felt that life had passed him by. His friends were getting married and advancing in their careers. Will wasn't in a relationship and was still working on the assembly line at the trailer factory. Then E.A. invited him over just to talk. While he was there David came over and said terrible upsetting things to E.A. Will didn't like that so he pretended to be there courting Elizabeth . Before he knew what happened E.A. and him were kissing and it sure didn't seem like pretend.
At the fabric store where E.A. worked she taugh sewing classes. She had one student that was nervous, unhappy and stressed out most of the time. Marta Miners husband refused to let her drive and E.A. expected she was a victim of abuse. What could she do to get Marta to open up to her and how could she help her. She liked Marta and considered her to be a friend.
This book is Amish Fiction. It's book three of Shelley Shepard Grays Walnut Creek Series. If you love Amish Fiction you will want to read this entire series. I would recommend starting at book one, The Patient One, so you won't get confused or lost in the story. I highly recommend it to you.

You have been my protection, like a strong tower against my enemies Psalm 61:3

E.A. and Will Kurtz have been friends for many years. As young children to young adults. They belonged to a group of friends that have gathered together since the death of their good friend Andy who took his own life. The Walnut Creek series focuses in on the friends and how they have dealt with their friends death and what it means for their lives now.

E.A. has been seeing David for awhile and realizes that they have nothing in common. When she breaks up with him, he becomes obsessed with her and their relationship. Will witnesses his bad behavior and in effort to protect her, he makes it known to David that E.A. and him are an item. What becomes a convenience ends up a deeper friendship that neither expected.

E.A. works at a sewing store that also gives classes on the basics of sewing. E.A. works closely with her student Marta. They become good friends, however, Marta is keeping a deadly secret from her sewing teacher and friend. E.A. suspects that Marta is hiding her fear. When she meets Marta's husband, she begins to put the pieces together.

Marta is working on a plan to escape her husband. With the confidence she needs and faith that God will work things out, she puts her plan into action.

I enjoyed how each of the characters were protecting the oppressed. Oppression comes in many different ways and this story reflected that.

A Special Thank you to Gallery Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

This is one story that covered some difficult issues characters faced but with a message of doing what was right despite the pain of exposing the truth. Elizabeth Anne (E.A,) was not happy with how things were going with her suitor David and finally had to take a stand. She did enjoy teaching her student Marta how to sew but sense she was hiding something. Will, one of the seven friends remaining, admire E.A. and became pursing her. They enjoyed adventures she had never experienced. E.A. trusted Will and reached out to him as a friend to enable her to assist another in need. I appreciate the way Shelley Shepard Gray handled the issue of domestic violence and how Marta plan unfolded. The heart pounding moments will bring tears but the end result is friends are protective of one another, just as God is everyone protector. I look forward to the next book in the Walnut Creek series by Shepard. I have not been disappointed with any of the stories even though hard topics are presented they are true to life issues that many friends and loved ones face.

I was blown away by The Protective One. Gray did an amazing job handling the very sensitive subject of abuse. Not only did she center her story of Elizabeth and Will around the physical abuse Elizabeth's student suffers from her husband but she also shows how mental and verbal abuse can be just as damaging and traumatic.

I found myself lying awake long after I finished the book thinking about the characters. Gray showed us that every one of us is affected by abuse in some way. Whether we experience it first hand or know someone who has been abused in some way. I loved how she showed strong friendships can endure almost anything and if we have them we can seek the help we need.

The Protective One will have you laughing and crying from one moment to the next. It is a powerful book that I feel can give someone the courage they need to get out of an abusive relationship.

If you are a fan of Amish stories than you need to check out author, Shelley Shepard Gray. I have read several books by this author and really enjoyed them all. This new book is no exception. This book can be read as a stand alone novel. You don't have to read these books in chronological order. However after reading this book, you will want to go back and read the prior novels or try another series by this author.

Elizabeth Anne aka E.A. was so kind. She showed it with Marta. Thus the reason I was so happy to see her find love with Will. I can't really comment on E.A.'s prior boyfriend and how I felt about him as he was briefly mentioned in the beginning of this book and than not really after that. As Will and E.A. learned; sometimes love can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

The Protective One is the third inspiring story written by Shelley Shepard Gray in her continuing series, The Walnut Creek series. This story has everything a reader would look for in a story. Fantastic characters, love, disappointment, friendship, fear, and underlying mystery. The characters the author has created are beyond amazing. The story has a fast revolving storyline which definitely keeps the readers interest throughout the entire story. I also enjoyed the mini story in which bits and pieces are revealed at the beginning of each chapter.

This story could be read as a stand alone but I highly recommend reading the first two books first. This story continues with the lives of a group of young friends dubbed The 8. Within this group there are Amish, Mennonites, and English who have remained friends since early childhood. In this series segment the author centers in on two of the friends Elizabeth Ann but known as EA a very strong outspoken Mennonite young lady and Will. Their friendship over the years has remained strong but standoffish. When EA least expects it Will becomes her protector. This poignant story of friendship is inspiring.

The author has developed this story that touches on so many important issues that could effect anyone's life. There is an abusive relationship, a stalking issue, and a bully. The way the author has handled each of these issues throughout the story gives the reader pause to consider how they might handle each situation. This is definitely a heartwarming story. So many emotions play out in this story.

I was given the opportunity to read this book in advance of it's release through Shelley Shepard Gray and Gallery Books. Although I received an advanced copy I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable response. I have rated this outstanding story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to all readers regardless of their preferred genre.

Congratulations to Shelley Shepherd Gray on writing another fantastic story for her readers enjoyment.

The Protective One by Shelley Shepard Gray is the third book in The Walnut Creek Series. Each one can be read on its own, but you will be missing out on some heartwarming stories. Elizabeth Anne or E.A. as she prefers to be called, is such a kind, patient woman. She is one of the Eight and one of the few remaining single members. E.A. was Marie’s maid of honor at her recent wedding to John. E.A. is feeling at loose ends. She is not happy with her job at Sew & Tell and her beau, David is a little odd. After some horrible remarks from David on the death of her friend, Andy, E.A. breaks off their relationship. After speaking with Will Kurtz, E.A. learns that he is also feeling restless. They start spending time together and they soon realize that their friendship is turning into something more. Will Kurtz is an Amishman who works at the local R.V. factory. He feels that his life is standing still while others are getting married and moving ahead in their jobs. I like how the relationship developed between E.A. and Will. They are cute together. There is humor in the story especially during a scene involving David (he is an odd duck). The Protective One also delves into the dark topics of spousal abuse and stalking. I thought Shelley Shepard Gray did a wonderful job at addressing such difficult subjects. Her portrayal of Marta was realistic. Marta Miner has been married for ten years to an abuser. She has decided it is time to break free, but Marta must wait for the right moment. Marta came up with a plan and then set about executing it. I admired Marta for her bravery. The ending was just wonderful. I appreciated that we get updates on the other members of the Eight. We get to see how the other couples are faring in their relationships. Faith is intertwined throughout the book. As we see, prayer can be a powerful tool. The Protective One is a special story that will linger with you long after you finish it. I cannot wait to read The Trustworthy One. The Protective One is a touching novel with friendship, love, and faith.

I liked this book well enough to still give it 5 stars.
I think the only thing that I didn't like about it was the use of the nickname E.A. I love the full name Elizabeth Anne so much better! It didn't make much sense to me. I guess it's because using a nickname doesn't give the character much personality.
Now if we're using the full name, this character really does have a lot to offer but this is just my opinion.
But overall I think the author has done a nice job on this tough subject. And a lot of it really does occur. Some women are just too ashamed or are just too afraid to make the necessary changes. Change is certainly hard enough.
Marta has my admiration! It takes a strong woman to do what she did!! She really could be an excellent role model!!
Her strength is really awesome! Just wow!
I also liked the idea of all of the 7 as I now call them that they are really there for each other and others in their community.
How I wish this were true in real life!!
I also wish that the author would just come out and say the Protective One is really our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord really does love us and offers us Hope at the end of the tunnel so to speak. All we need to do is ask.
I strongly recommend this book! It has all the elements of a good story! Shelley really knows her stuff!
My thanks to Netgalley. NO compensations were received. All opinions are my own!

I absolutely loved The Protective One. It is book three in the Walnut Creek series but could easily be read as a stand alone. There are so many things to like about the book. The characters are ones that you can easily picture in your minds because they are explained so well. Also the plot of this book is just so good and captures your attention and your heart right away.

The Protective One focuses on Elizabeth Anne (E.A.). She is one friend out of a group of eight friends. These friends have been through much together but still their friendship has endured. E.A. is at the point in her life where she is beginning to question things. One of those things is her very stifling and boring relationship with her boyfriend, David. David really takes E.A. for granted and treats her in a manner that is not appropriate. As a reader, I found myself getting angry with David and wanted to grab him and just shake him.

Will is another person in the group of eight friends. He is also at a point in his life where he is questioning things. He has seen his friends get married and one die. Now he wonders what direction he should go in. When he comes to E.A.'s rescue and pretends to be her new boyfriend, he did not expect to fall in love with her. But as the book goes on that is exactly what happens.

E.A. works at a sewing shop and gives lessons. When she begins to give lessons to a lady named Marta, she immediately liked her. Marta has a serious situation she is struggling with and E. A. feels very protective of her. I wont' spoil what happens in the book but Gray writes it so well.

The Protective One deals with serious issues and it also deals with questions we ask about ourselves as we grow up and see people around us getting married, being promoted or dying. It can cause us to question what direction we should take, but our Heavenly Father is very able to direct out paths. He does exactly that in The Protective One.

Now this is the third book in this series, and these people have become friends to me, but if you are reading this one as a first, don’t worry you really won’t be lost. The author keeps you updated as to what has happened I the past, and we learn more about these friends of eight.
This is Elizabeth Anne’s and Will’s story, and a side story of Marta, a woman in need.
Will Elizabeth Anne and Will overcome obstacles, namely David and family, and there are many chuckles here!
I love the faith of these folks, a group of Amish, Mennonite, and English, all there for one another, no matter what the circumstances. Wouldn’t we all want friends like this?
You might just want to go and pick up the other two books, they are equally as good!

This book did not disappoint! Shelley Shepard Gray has done it again! Her writing sucks you in and holds on until the book is complete! This book has so much love in it. It also has fear, courage, and so much more! This book is very encouraging and it was a pleasure to read. It encourages the reader to do the right thing and stand on the right thing! It also encourages readers to see where things can go from a tiny spark to a roaring fire! Again, Shelley Shepard Gray has written an amazing book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will not be able to put it down!

This story was great ! I read it in a couple hours because I couldn't put it down. Shelley Shepard Gray wrote a very detailed and very believable story and it covers some highly relevant topics today; such as depression, suicide, spousal abuse, etc,. She did it in such a way that you really feel for the characters without it being graphic and in the midst of it all she gives us a sweet story of falling in love with your best friend. I truly enjoyed this story and recommend reading it.
I give it 4 stars out of 5 for the great story line, well developed characters, and for explaining some hard topics. I recommend reading this book.

I will definitely need to read the first books in this series because this one was so good. I want to learn all about the other characters that were mentioned in this story. I loved how there were a few stories going on that were interconnected. The romance was great but so was the intrigue. This handled the spousal abuse very well. This is a book that you want time to read because you won’t want to put it down. I can’t wait to read the next in the series. I always find it amazing how the author, Shelley Shepard Gray can put so much in each of her books. I never had a problem breezing through one of her books, even when I'm in a reading slump or have problems reading. Yet, there I go closing the last page of The Protective One and thinking how much is in there.

A simple Amish story, but packed tight with themes of change, love, courage and friendship, The Protective One is one story that readers will resonate with on one or more levels. There may even be more themes but at this stage, it hasn't occurred to me yet. The story of the Eight intrigued me to no end, because of the strength of friendship bound our characters together, and to have that level of friendship is amazing. Of course there's the underlying message of change and having the courage to realize it and take action threads through each of our characters and at one point take its point at us, readers. Elizabeth Anne, aka EA and Will's friendship to love is a quick one, but it was well executed for readers to understand and accept. Marta's storyline and how it intertwines with EA's, along with the message of God's purpose for us to how He use us, even if it's something minor, but can be a catalyst, in all just stayed with me. Yes, a simple Amish story, but it will capture your hearts and take a place on your mind long after.

The Protective One is the third book in Shelly Shepard Gray's Walnut Creek Series. If you haven't had a chance to read the others yet, don't worry you can start here and follow along just fine.

Elizabeth Anne, or EA as her friends call her, seems to have her life all figured out. She and David have been dating for quite a while and everyone assumes the next logical step is an engagement and marriage. Their families are neighbors and have been friends for as long as anyone can remember, it just feels like their relationship is meant to be. Somethings aren't always what they seem EA has a restless deep down that she can't contain. Maybe it's because her close group of friends, The Eight as they are more commonly known, are all pairing off but EA just feels the need for a change.

Will Kurtz was feeling at odds himself. Also a member of The Eight, he felt things changing and nothing would ever be the same. Sure he was proud of his friends for their marriages and promotions but he just felt stuck. Maybe he needed a job change or a change of heart, he isn't sure, he just knows he needs something. He's not ungrateful for what he has, he knows he's blessed more than most, he just wishes for something more. But what?

The Protective One is more than just a romance story, it tackles hard to talk about issues with courage and grace. I loved Elizabeth Anne! She reminds me so much of myself. She's kind and caring, has a heart of gold but she isn't afraid to speak up for herself when she feels the need to. She's definitely the kind of friend you want to have around. At times during the story I wondered how on Earth she ended up with someone like David! Where she is kind and thoughtful he is rude and belligerent. When things don't go his way, look out! There is a temper tantrum on the way. I found him to be childish, rude and down right manipulating. I was so glad when EA found her voice and told David to get off her porch, they were though! Of course, even when breaking off a long time relationship she still had tact and finesse, I wish we could say the same for David.

I think my favorite part though, was when EA befriended Marta, her sewing student. Although they were from different backgrounds, EA is Mennonite and Marta is English, EA felt a pull towards Marta. I was glad that EA listened to the Lord and befriended Marta because she sure did need it! Marta's husband was a lot like David only worse. He was controlling, manipulative and also abusing. Of course EA didn't know all this she just felt like she was supposed to be in Marta's life for a reason.

I found myself feeling bad for Will. He always offered encouragement to his friend and co workers but didn't feel right sharing his problems with others. He was so happy for his friends but he felt like his time would never come. He felt awful for feeling this way, mainly because he thought it made him feel petty and stupid. He doesn't want to seem ungrateful he just wants something more, some type of change. When Will finally unburdens himself to EA he finds a kindred spirit. She's not judgmental as he feared, she actually understands and offers him sound advice. Will finds himself looking at EA in a different way, sure they've been good friends for years but could they be more?

I absolutely LOVED The Protective One and I think you will too! It will have you laughing out loud one minute and gasping with surprise in another. If you've never read one of Shelly Shepard Gray's books, this is a great one to start with!

The Protective One by Shelley Shepard Gray
(Walnut Creek Series, The Book 3)
From a “skilled storyteller who reminds the reader that faith can help us survive the ups and downs in life” (RT Book Reviews), Shelley Shepard Gray weaves a moving and unforgettable exploration of love and friendship.

Gray has mastered the ability to write sweet stories with real-world problems. It’s a fantastic element of this story, and I don’t know how she does it. Although there are elements of harsh problems – abuse, stalking, family conflict – there’s not a part of the story that is too harsh or scary to read.

That’s not to say that I wasn’t on the edge of my seat. I was completely invested in E.A.’s story and couldn’t wait to find out how resolution would be found. I read the second half of the book in one fell swoop, reading super late at night, because I just couldn’t put it down.

I haven’t read the other books in the series, but that really didn’t matter. Although I certainly want to know what happens, and I’ll definitely be seeking the first two books out, I didn’t feel lost or confused about the characters or their plot lines. The characters felt realistic and interesting, and I liked the way that they interacted.

Their situations sometimes felt less than realistic, however, but maybe that’s just for me. Having Englisch, Amish, and Mennonite kids being super close doesn’t feel totally real. There were Amish kids in my elementary school, but very few, and the vast majority went to their own schools. I lived near one of the purest, most conservative Amish communities in the world, though, so maybe their communities have different types of interactions in other places. This didn’t make me want to put the book down by any means; but it did make me pause to consider whether it felt realistic.

All told, I really liked The Protective One. I like the way that Gray was able to address current, modern, edgy issues from the perspective of young Christian adults. I like the way that she considered life and priorities and relationships in ways that felt both realistic and sweet.

I don’t want to miss the rest of the series – I’m seeking them out now.

If you like sweet stories with a touch of suspense, be sure to look up Shelley Shepard Gray’s The Protective One!

The Protective One by Shelley Shepard Gray is the third installment of the Walnut Creek series. Set in Walnut Creek, Ohio, the story focuses on a group of seven friends, some Amish, some Mennonite and others English. The group is mourning the loss of a friend, the eighth member of the group, and trying to forge their own futures.

The Protective One focuses on Elizabeth Ann and Will, once friends and now learning their affection for one another runs a bit deeper. Initially a ruse to get rid of a pesky (ex) boyfriend, Elizabeth Ann (E.A. for short) and Will find themselves falling for one another. The remaining members of the group seem amused to see their friends developing into a couple. E.A.'s parents, meanwhile, are slightly disappointed that E.A. has broken up with their close friends' son and put pressure on her to consider what she is doing. Her parents wonder if E.A.'s ongoing grief for her late friend is muddling her mind.

E.A. has other worries when her sewing student, a married Englisher, starts behaving alarmingly and asking E.A. to lie for her. Her behavior is reminding E.A. of another person she knows, someone who was in an abusive relationship.

While this story is the third installment of the series, the book is written to where it could be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed the fact that while the characters are, for the most part, from the Plain communities the story does not follow the normal trajectory of an Amish Christian book, but addresses some current mainstream issues such as marital abuse and suicide.

I highly recommend that any fan of fiction pick up this book for an enjoyable read.

I was provided a copy of this book and this is an honest opinion.

I usually enjoy Shepard Gray's Amish romances especially, Autumn's Promise which is still on my keeper shelf after almost a decade, so I always try to pick up her short but sweet books. The Protective One is book three in the Walnut Creek series, but the first I've read since falling behind on my reading last year. It's not necessary to have read the previous novels and novellas, but I highly recommend it. I was left wondering the backstories of a few of the characters in this book who I discovered were the main characters in books 1 and 2. That said, I still enjoyed the story. It wasn't the most in depth or complex romance, but I enjoyed threads of romance and friendship.

Friendship was the main focus of this entire series, I believe, and it's refreshing. I have my own small circle of very close friends and could very much relate. Even though a burgeoning romance between E.A. and her old friend took center stage, not all was rosy. The author also explored domestic abuse--both emotional and physical. The Protective One definitely had a more serious tone than any others I've read from her in the recent past.

The Protective One was a wonderful tale of unique friendships and devotion. I recommend it to fans of Amish fiction and women's fiction. Be sure to check out the previous books in the series too as I plan to do to prepare for the next book, The Trustworthy One due out in May!

I can not say enough good things about this book. Shelley Shepard Gray did an amazing job of keeping her audience engaged through the good and the bad. She tells a story about lifelong friends, also known as The Eight. From things that happened at a high school prom, get-togethers, and weddings.

Elizabeth Anne, better known as E.A. to many befriends an English lady who is her sewing student. Elizabeth can tell that her student is in trouble but isn't sure exactly how to help her. E.A. has been courting David and soon finds herself in a similar verbal abusive situation after she breaks things off with him.

Through everything, she confides in her friends and Will. Will is a very humble friend who seems to always be there for his friends or anyone in need. Elizabeth Anne and Will seem to be the single ones in their group. But, through love, friendships and helping others their relationship takes a turn.

The Protective One is a story of true friendships, love and finding one's self-worth. It touches on domestic and verbal abuse. Just because someone appears to be happy on the outside, doesn't mean all is the same within their home. To stand up for one's beliefs and stand up for others takes courage.

Overall, just a fantastic book that I would recommend.

The Protective One (Walnut Creek #3)
by Shelley Shepard Gray
This book is coming out at the right time. With the new release of Little women movie in another century, this book allows the reader a look into the world of the Mennonites and the Quaker ideology. The reader will find that modern problems with relationships is not limited to the city or the modern woman. E.A. finds that her long term suitor is not the ideal he protests he is. When she begins to question his behavior she finds it intolerable. This realization will change her whole life as she soul searches for her right path. She finds support not only in her family but her long time friends.
The book also shows the reader that small town life does not inhibit spousal abuse. Shelley Shepard Gray uses a number of viewpoints to show young girls and women that they are not alone in their struggles and that they will find support not only in the community but in those they already have a round them. I think it’s important that modern readers face this struggle in this safe format. Like Anne McCaffrey's The Lady, this book looks to the solution to a problem that many people think is an intolerable situation. Thank you for helping women in this situation to find a way out of these situations.

This book is a great addition to this excellent series. I like the strong core of trust that these friends have in each other. In this book, both Will and E.A. are at a stage of change in their lives . A mutual tragedy has deeply affected both of them, and has them considering their next steps in life as far as jobs and relationships. Will and E. A. begin to realize that their friendship might possibly be transforming into something much deeper. There’s a good mix of Amish and Mennonite friends in this story, and it’s interesting in how they cheerfully manage the differences among them.

There’s some sweet, romantic moments in this book, but there’s also some serious storylines, too. There’s references to one of their friends who committed suicide. Marta’s storyline is about spousal abuse and her attempts to break away from her dangerous situation. If this topic is a trigger for you, be aware that although everything is handled thoughtfully and with hope, it could be distressing for you.

Although this is part of a series, you can read this book on its own. The author did a good job of blending in details from other books and made it easy to fill in the blanks.

The Protective One is an Amish romance novel by author Shelley Shepard Gray. It is book #3 of the Walnut Creek series.

The Protective One is all over the place because there is more than one story told throughout. Andy Warner had committed suicide and David couldn’t understand how Andy could mean so much to Elizabeth Anne Schmidt (E.A.). David was extremely pushy and wanted E.A. to be his fiance. However, E.A. was finished with David and only wanted him to leave her alone.

The Protective One is not your ordinary, sweet, Amish tale. I did appreciate that when the police were needed they were put in a good light, as helpers.

Perhaps it would have been more appealing if I read the beginning books. However, I do say I love the cover even though I think it doesn’t fit the story told. So, all in all, The Protective One is not what I expected.
