This was a really good book. I really enjoyed this book a lot. Ms. Harris is a fantastic job at keeping me hooked from page one. I found myself rooting hard for the main characters and despising the bad ones. The plot was upbeat and though not as suspenseful as much suspense books, it still had you turning the pages to see what happens next.

The characters were amazing and I loved seeing Aubrey's character arc develop throughout this book. I loved her characters and my heart ached for the poor girl. She went through a lot in the book, but thankfully she had Jake right besides her. I really loved Jake's character. I felt like he balanced Aubrey perfectly and though he at times was a tad bit stereotypical, he also was more realistic due to his personality.

Aubrey and Jake's relationship was a minor thing in this book and it gave it more of a realistic aspect to their romance. I really liked that because this book was not one to have their romance be up front. But honestly they are made for each other! I do think Aubrey's opinions on relationships could have been expanded on a little more but I still enjoyed watching her grow in that area of her life.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice quarantine read and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Harris has in store for us next!!

Heart racing suspense from beginning to end, this latest suspense novel by Lisa Harris is filled with twists, turns, and numerous unsavory characters. Detective Aubrey Grayson and FBI Agent Grant McKenna have been friends since childhood. Now they find themselves embroiled in a case that begins when Aubrey's Papps, her stand-in father, is shot right next to her on a duck hunting trip and she is kidnapped. Grant is determined to figure out who is behind this and why. He becomes involved when he learns that the FBI case he is working ties in to Aubrey's kidnapping.

Harris brings Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas to life with her wonderful descriptions, and her plot puts you right in the middle of all the action. With chills, thrills, and great pacing, the writing held my attention every minute. I liked that the romance took a back seat to the suspense and that Harris also maintained a good spiritual thread without being preachy. That is especially seen at the end when Aubrey has to decide whether to hang on to bitterness or forgive even though it wasn't easy.

"I don't believe God gets frustrated at our trying to get to know him better. Even when it involves questioning what he allows to happen. "

The Traitor's Pawn
By: Lisa Harris

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
Over the past year or so, I've read several books published by Revell and liked them all. The Traitor's Pawn is the latest, and it did not disappoint. Two old friends, possible love interests, are embroiled in an investigation that neither anticipated. It turns personal for one of them, and the stakes get higher. I like this story because it's a solid intriguing mystery that is not too heavy. It's well balanced with a bit of suspense, action, romance and family drama. The characters are relatable and flawed. Overall, I would recommend for suspense and mystery readers looking for a lighter offering without so much grit and gore but still compelling and entertaining from the first page.

Traitor's Pawn is a page-turner from the opening scene. Almost immediately the heroine is on a race to help stop a traitor -- but it quickly becomes personal when the traitor is someone she knows well. Then Jack Shannon shows up and the sparks begin to appear. Best friends years ago, he walked away and Bree has never understood why. Thrust together to find the traitor before it's too late, the tension tightens with each chapter. Lisa Harris is quickly becoming one of my favorite romantic suspense authors.

Extra star added for not being able to put this down once I started it! It’s a trilling ride from start to finish as Aubrey and Jack race to stop spies from stealing government secrets. It’s the Chinese against the Russians against a man who may or may not be actually betraying his government. I loved the continual twists; from the start it’s clear that the fairly simple intel they get at the beginning is gravely understated.

Aubrey, a local detective, is ready for anything, and I was ready to root for her from the very beginning. She made an excellent lead and was a heroine that made me root for her right away. Her sidekick, old friend, and romantic interest Jack is a solid hero who brings the power and expertise of the FBI to her side in the hunt to find and stop her father and his cohorts/enemies.

The story is mostly geared toward suspense and solving the spy disaster they are trying to defeat; the romance is secondary but quite satisfactory. The Christian message is short but well stated. Overall, it’s a great thriller and a book I’m happy to recommend.

Content: clean. Would be suitable for teens as well as adults.

Whoa! Whoa! Whooooaaaa! Be prepared for some whiplash worthy plot twists and so much tension I 'bout turned blue holding my breath! I don't think my racing heart has calmed down yet either. Might consider The Traitor's Pawn a cardiac workout too.

And one of things I love the most about this romantic suspense is the way the romance develops. Harris gives enough breathing time between action scenes to really settle into Jack and Aubrey's relationship. They were best friends pulled apart by circumstance and watching them slowly lower their guard and fall back into the easy camaraderie of their youth is pure reading pleasure.

A kick butt spy thriller full of espionage, betrayal and an emotional reunion-ish romance!

Loved how this novel started...heroine sitting in a duck blind in south Texas, which is very much a small town Texas girl thing to do.

The main feature about the suspense was that the primary person being tracked was the heroine's father.

If you are seeking an easy to read suspense novel, this is a good pick.

Aubrey is enjoying some downtime from her job with the Houston police, visiting family friends in Corpus Christi and about to do some duck hunting. But the peaceful vacation doesn't last long, and the action begins in the first few pages of this gripping suspense from the author of DEADLY INTENTIONS, which I absolutely loved.

Aubrey is a strong, confident woman who is good at her job, but when her friend and father figure is shot and she herself is kidnapped, she finds herself on the wrong side of a gun. Aubrey felt like a very realistic character. She's experienced at bringing down bad guys, but when a bad guy gets the jump on her, she doesn't turn into Superwoman. She's resourceful and finds a way to fight back, but she's also worried and terrified, as any normal person would be, and I appreciated that.

Jack is an FBI agent who is in town on an unrelated case. He and Aubrey were best friends growing up, and when Jack finds out Aubrey has been kidnapped he willingly jumps in to help out. It makes for a bittersweet reunion, as he and Aubrey lost touch after he moved away, and I also appreciated that their renewed friendship did not include a quick “now that we see each other again after all these years we obviously are in love and must be together”. Not that they have time for that anyway, what with all the bad guys out there that need to be identified and taken down. Possibly including Aubrey's estranged father, who may or may not be involved in some way. And I can't really say much more without giving too much away.

Lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing, lots of action, high on suspense, low on romance, well written, and a great way to get your mind off the pandemic and enjoy your isolation.

The setting for this page turner was Corpus Christi, Texas, and page turner it was. There was barely a moment when someone wasn’t being shot at, abducted, double-crossed, slapped around or lied to. One bad guy after another as well as FBI, a senator, police officers and sheriffs in every scene.

Aubrey Grayson was one amazing cop who seemed to not only get herself into dangerous situations, but get out of them almost as quickly. Then there's her best friend from her youth, Jack Shannon, now an FBI agent, whom she hasn’t seen for years showing up to help rescue her from some pretty dangerous spies. Whew!

Very good book (aside from two unrealistic moments I had to roll my eyes at). For entertainment and edge of your seat reading? This will keep a suspense fan engaged!

The Traitor's Pawn is Lisa Harris's newest release from Revell. Harris has long ago established herself as one of my favorite suspense authors, so I was excited to get my hands on this one and dive deep!

The story starts out very action-packed and from there, you can't put it down. Aubrey Grayson is a very compelling character and easy to relate to. Her motivation is clear and the reader can't help but root for her. I enjoyed the romance between her and Jack, and appreciated that it took more of a backseat to the other events of the story. It made it so much more realistic. The ending wrapped up her character arc perfectly, but in a very authentic way. Speaking of Jack, I really liked his character as well, although I just wish there was . . . more of him. In most books like this one, the role of main character is equally shared between the male and female lead characters. However, Jack's POV scenes were few and far between compared to Aubrey's. And as much as I appreciated the message the author was trying to get across with Aubrey's story, I would have loved to delve into Jack and his story more. As it was, he seemed more of a device to get Aubrey and the story where they needed to go. It left me wanting a sequel just to be able to learn more about Jack and get into his head more.

The story goes deep into the investigative side of things, which I enjoyed, although a little more action may have moved the story along faster. This was almost in the style of a Dee Henderson novel: heavy on the actual investigation and solving of the crime and light on the more action-packed scenes. I also appreciated the themes of forgiveness and redemption Harris included in the story; they were woven in very realistically.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed this release from Lisa Harris! If you are a fan of Dee Henderson and Lynette Eason, you'll definitely want to check out The Traitor's Pawn!

FBI Agent Jack Shannon comes to Corpus Christi to track down the person selling government secrets to China. But when the Senator is shot during a hunting trip and a woman is kidnapped, Jack is shocked to find out that the woman taken is his high school crush, Bree Grayson.

A high stakes, action-packed, with the security of the country at risk. There are a lot of twists and turns, filled with betrayal and friendship.

Bree is a strong heroine, she has never been close with her father, but the Senator is like a surrogate father to her. She has a passion for justice, and wants to do whatever she can to be of help to investigation. She feels at home with Jack, everything is so easy with him even though the situation around them is not, I loved their interaction and how God's timing brought them together.

Jack is an excellent agent, devoted to his job, and Bree is the girl he never forgot. He is devoted to his job and isn't sure what to expect with Bree coming back into his life so unexpectedly. He is an man of action, and is serious about his faith.

Overall, a fast paced, action-packed read, it was hard to put down and had plenty of suspense. I liked the balance of romance with high stakes international intrigue. This was an engaging and entertaingin read, highly recommend!

This is an interesting romantic suspense story in that it involves family relationships and hurts inflicted from a father abandoning family to pursue his own interests.

Convoluted emotions are frequently addressed in thoughts and conversations of primary characters, Jack Shannon and Aubrey Grayson, as they work through their own past friendship and how to relate to each other currently. In addition, Aubrey's childhood abandonment creates underlying insecurities.

As agents of law enforcement involved in national security Jack and Aubrey maneuver through these suspense moments and find it highly entangled with Aubrey's father.

The romance is a bit predictable but the suspense is battered back and forth with various endings running through the reader's mind as it races to a conclusion at the end of the book.

A not-to-heavy read that provides a level of entertainment that provides a bit of insight into the workings of torn emotions and faithfulness to one's calling.

Lisa Harris never fails to bring an action-packed, adrenaline-filled romantic suspense to her readers. The Traitor's Pawn takes two estranged childhood best friends Jack and Aubrey and puts them smack in the middle of treason, espionage, and betrayal. Jack is the fierce protector of FBI agent and Aubrey is a police detective and they join forces to untangle a web of threats, murders, and stolen secrets. The plot moves at a brisk pace and it has plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing at the identity of the real villain.

If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will enjoy this book and the author's writing style. I received a copy of the book from Revell and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

No offense to the author, but when I first read a book by her a few years back, I was just like "she is OK...". Then I read more her books, and discovered she is more than OK. I have come to love her suspense novels, and she is definitely one of my favorite suspense authors.

The Traitor's Pawn is evidence of her being such a great author. I enjoyed this book a lot. I made the mistake of starting it on my lunch break at work, and had to put it down at a very climatic moment....which there are many of in this book.

Harris kept me guessing for a while on who was the true target, why, and if the guy they finally suspected was truly guilty or was a victim of a frame job. Even towards the very end of the book, I found myself back and forth on the guilt of the suspect.

As with the majority of Christian suspense novels on the market, this one is romantic suspense. This book is different from a lot of those out there. In Traitor's Pawn, the two main characters had been best friends for years when they were younger, but a dating relationship with the male lead's brother and the female lead had prevented anything beyond friendship. It is a nice departure from guy meets girl, people try to kill them, they fall in love, and they live happily ever after. Not that those books are bad. :)

There was a lot to like about this book, and I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it. I am thankful there are quality Christian authors like Harris who continue to put out great clean and Christian suspense that is worth reading. And I have always found her more interesting since she is a missionary.

This appears to be a stand alone novel.

This was a great suspense. I flipped through my kindle pages as fast as I could tap my finger. The whole plot about spies and selling government secrets and the Chinese vs the Russian was thrilling and filled with action. And the way the author threw in the twists and turns made for great suspense.

I loved that the romance was secondary to the suspense.

Bree and Jack was great characters with real emotions and struggles. I felt Bree's determination to find the truth but also her struggles when the truth was close to home. And Jack was a great guy for Bree - working next to her, supporting her and fighting along with her. There was just one small thing that felt a bit like an inconsistency in the romance

A great suspense which I would highly recommend.

A good suspense read with a believable plot line, interesting story, and terrific characters.
It also had a rather emotional surprise towards the end that I didn’t expect to happen.

I really liked the main character in this story, Aubrey. She wasn’t an emotional type, was incredibly analytical when thinking through the case before her, and she wanted serious relationships only. I could really relate to her and how she looked at the world. Her viewpoint was relatable and the reader could really build empathy for her.

Jack grows on the reader. I didn’t fall in love with him right at the beginning, but he proves himself as the plot moves along. He gives a lot of good, Biblical advice to Aubrey.

The faith theme in this book mostly comes from discussions between the two main characters. I really like spiritual dialogue in my reads. It tends to provoke more thought than other ways a faith theme is introduced. It isn’t an incredibly strong faith theme, but the elements of hope and forgiveness is there. God and his power over all things is brought into the picture as is stories from the Bible. I always like it when an author can put a good faith theme in a fairly fast moving suspense read.

I actually hate to admit it, but I think this is my first read by Lisa Harris. I certainly don’t plan on it being my last. This had a good pace to it, believable storyline, loved the characters, and a faith theme. I enjoyed and recommend this read.

I read three of Lisa Harris’ novels back to back.

A lot of suspenseful, fun, intriguing, and sometimes sweet books in a few days. The Traitor's Pawn has had me on the edge of my seat to read since I first heard about it a while ago, and that cover! Wow! So perfect for the story with the model, the background, and the colors.

I could already tell that there was a red herring as I started the book and the suspense came up, but I wasn't completely sure where it was coming from … I almost expected it to be different than it did end and was glad it hadn't gone the way I expected though it was not the happiest ending suspense wise. I thought the romance side was sweet and it had a good ending.

Content wise this was a pretty good suspense, though I thought it was a bit violent for me at times but I don't love the violence often found in suspense. An interesting read that will leave you wanting more from the author.

I'm struggling to remember the Christian content since I read it with Lisa Harris’ other books but from what I know was part of The Traitor's Pawn it was all right.

Twists and turns that start on the very first page!

From page one, I was pulled into the action and suspense when Aubrey Grayson witnesses a close family friend shot right in front of her and then she's kidnapped. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear not everything is as it seems and I liked the way Ms. Harris kept increasing the stakes. The romantic tension between Aubrey and Jack continue to grow from an established friendship, which made it feel natural. A thrilling plot and developed characters will have romantic suspense fans enjoying every page of this story!

I’m going to give this one 3.5 stars. It really took me a long time to get into this book. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. For being a suspense book, some of it felt very unreal and improbable. It did get somewhat better as the story went on. I did start to care for the characters by the end of the book. I did like the message about forgiveness in this one.

"The Traitor's Pawn" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. The suspense was high from start to finish, created by the physical danger (shooting, kidnapping, a bomb threat, hostage situations, and more) but also by the relationship tensions. Aubrey's father was on Jack's FBI "to arrest" list as someone known to be selling government secrets to both the Chinese and the Russians. Aubrey's father was never a big part of her life even before her parent's divorce, but she still had feelings of abandonment to deal with and a desire to have a good father conflicting with the reality that he wasn't. Jack helped her to deal with these feelings.

Jack and Aubrey were best friends since childhood and supported each other. Their love grew as they shared life experiences together and felt understood by the other, but both were afraid of ruining their friendship if they dated and it didn't work out. They were a good team and made a good couple.

During the story, they talked about several Christian topics like how God is faithful even when the people in our lives aren't and about how forgiving is for our own sake. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd highly recommend this suspense novel.

My favorite kind of novel starts right in the middle of the action! The Traitor’s Pawn kicks off with an attempted abduction as Aubrey Grayson tries to make sense of why anyone would want to kidnap her. Aubrey’s long-lost friend from childhood, FBI Agent Jack Shannon, happens to be in town with an investigation of his own. Their paths cross as Aubrey realizes her connection to the FBI investigation. Aubrey’s involvement in the case becomes personal when she finds out why she’s the target.

I’m a fan of Lisa Harris. Her novels are always action-packed with lots of plot twists. I enjoyed the super-fast pace of The Traitor’s Pawn. The chemistry between the two main characters worked well, as they had been childhood friends that never wanted to wreck a friendship to take a chance on a romantic relationship. I liked the fact that Aubrey was in law enforcement and became part of the investigating team. While Jack felt protective, Aubrey held her own and I enjoy stories with strong female leads.

The story had a lot of depth while delivering plenty of intrigue. This gets a definite “must read” from me. It’s definitely a page-turner.

Overall: 5 stars (I loved it, couldn’t put it down)
Suspense: 5 stars (Non-stop edge-of-your-seat suspense from start to finish)

Traitor's Pawn is my first book by Lisa Harris. The lead characters in this book are Detective Aubrey Grayson and FBI Agent Jack Shannon. When Aubrey is kidnapped at the start of the book, Jack is on the case to find her and he does. Then they work to solve the mystery of her kidnapping and two overlapping cases.

The Traitor's Pawn was difficult for me to read at first. I struggled to really like the characters until the middle of the book. Jack and Aubrey had a relationship earlier in their lives and are coming back together after several years of not communicating. At that point I did pull for them to get together, although the romance in this book is secondary to the crime plot. Communication was an issue throughout the book in their relationship. I think that is actually a problem in many people's relationships so that part does seem realistic. I guess one thing that bothered me throughout the book was that Audrey was so close to the people they were investigating. I wasn't sure it was realistic that she would be allowed to work that way on the case with her personal connections to it. At the same time, Jack and Audrey had a lot of adventures with the bad guys and worked well together to solve the case. The best part of The Traitor's Pawn for me was the spiritual thread of forgiveness which I did think was both inspirational and could be helpful to other readers.

Let me start by saying I devoured this book! It starts off with a bang and the action is nonstop throughout the book. It read quickly and easily and kept me involved until the very end. With all the pieces, it was so much fun trying to figure out how they fit and who were the bad guys. The ending was satisfying and I loved the characters. This was an awesome suspense read. Looking forward to reading more of Lisa's books.

Review:
This was my first time reading a book by Lisa Harris so i wasnt sure what to expect but i ending up loving this book even tho it started off slow for me.

This book was about an FBI Agent helping his partner and former love interest stop the attacks on the US by a man sending cryptic messages to the US Government through the Chinese after a US Texas Senator is shot.

The Storyline and Characters were so easy to get into. It was more of a True Crime Fiction Book over a Romantic Suspense but overall a great read!!

Can't wait to read more by Lisa in the future!!!

If you enjoy a book with a lot of action, this is the one, in fact I had the feeling I was watching the evening news.
While a read of fiction, this one sure could be true, and that in its self is very scary, but the author quickly had me page turning, I needed answers, and my guesses to what was going on kept changing.
The book starts out with an innocent duck hunt, and ends with a bomb, literally, and much more in between. We are also given a bit of sweet romance, a longing to have what it not to be, or is it?
The dynamics of family relationships, and the heartache that it can bring, along with those who were there for those who were in need.
You don't want to miss this one, it will keep you on the edge of your seat, and page-turning for answers!

This book was just so awesome and it's a great start to a new series!
I finished it late into the night last night and this morning I had a book hangover. But so worth the read! I even tried to put it down to go to bed and I couldn't make my eyes close because I kept thinking about Aubrey, Jack and Adam but mostly Aubrey.
This story is about finding the truth. Sometmes the truth ends up hurting but in the end it can also give us peace if we can come to accept it. It can make us or break us this is where forgiveness comes in.
This is one of my favorite quotes because it's what I've been trying to say all along in my other reviews Jack tells Aubrey this because she's waring within herself on her feelings about her father.
"I can't make that decision for you, but I do know that sometimes forgiveness is more for the person who needs to forgive than the person who need to receive it. Even if that's all that's left to be said."
Folks, this is so very true even if it's only for yourself. At least you can be in peace. Life is too short.
I've been there and done that. It isn't easy to forgive someone who's done you wrong or whatever the case is. I had to learn along the way with Jesus. I've had to ask Jesus to help me and you know what He did!
This book has so many twists and turns that will make you eager to turn the pages to see what is happening next! It did me! And I loved every minute of it!
I thought Jack was just the best! I loved his kind and caring ways and oh my he can be by my side any time he wants. I felt that he was the best listener! His support for Aubrey meant a lot to me as a woman because not many men are like that.
Aubrey is my heroine. Why you ask? Because she wants to see this thing through and that my friends takes Jesus and a whole lot of determination not to give up. I love her personality because it's a lot like mine. She can be my friend and sister any time! I loved getting to know her.
I enjoyed in getting to know the supporting characters too. Like Adam. I thought he was the best friend anyone could have.
I liked how Harris added the theme Trust. because I couldn't have said it better myself. Trust is the most important thing other than Forgiveness.
Here's another favorite quote " Sometimes, all we can do is trust" in God to do what is right and doing what's right isn't always easy. Especially when we don't things are fair in life and it tends to make us angry. I know it does me. It makes me angry because there are rules that are "supposed to be for certain people" and the rest well you get my drift. I don't like that. It's not fair.
It's great to have friends in Christ around you who can give you a gentle reminder every now and then when we need it.
Join the hunt for the truth--and a traitor--in this tension-laden story of secrets, betrayal, and second chances.
This book was so very good that I can't express it enough. I highly recommend it.

Aubrey Grayson is a good cop. She is shocked to find evidence that her estranged father could be a traitor and she is unwittingly involved. While duck hunting with former Senator, Grant McKenna, they come under fire. He is shot and she is kidnapped. Lots of intrigue as FBI agent and long time best friend of Aubrey, Jack Shannon, tries to put the pieces together. The action rarely lets up.
Bree and Jack share a solid faith. Even though they have questions about how things are playing out with her father, they know God is in charge.
Bree: “I cannot put my ultimate hope in people or circumstances. I can only put it in God, because he is always faithful.”
Jack: “My father always told me that God is about the long game. That he is more interested in who you become, even if the actual process is difficult. I am not saying God doesn’t care about the little things, but he’s more interested in my reaching the finish line.”
Not only do Bree and Jack share faith, they have a long friendship behind them. And even though it has been interrupted for a while, they might take it to another level.
Come along for a unique story of suspense, faith and some self-searching.

Wow oh wow, what a great page turner!! I was attracted to that cover without even realizing how the story would grab me and NOT let me go. Aubrey is trying to enjoy a much needed break with a loved one and family members nearby when her loved one is shot and she is kidnapped. Goodness, but that girl is a fighter! This one excursion changes the rest of Aubrey's much needed vacation and makes her DETERMINED to find out who the culprit is while praying her loved one survives the gunshot wound.

One of the best parts of this story that I enjoyed, EVERY life matters. Too many innocent bystanders are targeted or grabbed at gunpoint, Aubrey and her friend Jack Shannon will NOT risk hurting those bystanders and it only enhanced the story for me.

FBI Special Agent Jack Shannon strikes me as kind of a coward at first because of the way he walked away from his friendship with Aubrey when they are younger. He is determined to keep his distance from her while solving the case AND protecting her the entire time. It turns out that this case is MUCH different and deadlier than Aubrey or Jack realize and it will take very little sleep and much team work to find the bad guys in this and not lose their cool or be killed.

I had compassion for Aubrey and dealing with her biological parent in the story, but I never once felt bad for him. I was grateful for her decision and the difficult process that was for her after everything that happened with this story. I didn't see Jack worthy of her heart until almost the end. Some of the dialogue between them was too polite or unnatural for me, so I felt led to give the rating I did. The police procedure and tactics were done perfectly, they communicated well and impressed me in the book. I thought Aubrey was SUCH a great character and loved every decision she made, despite the hurt and struggle she went through. In real life, I don't think she would have been allowed to help with the investigation as described, but it was acceptable and well written.

I was given a review copy through NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. The comments and opinions are my own.

Lisa Harris has written another great romantic suspense. The Traitor's Pawn has a real edge of your seat plot with believable characters. I loved the Texas setting. If you are a fan of suspense you will not want to miss this book. I received an advance reader copy of this book from the publisher and this is my unbiased review.
