In the Mind #2

Lost in the Mind

Rate this book
After the last incident—which involved a serial killer—Chevy and Seneca are considering puppy wrangling as a new, safer profession than psychic detective work. Honestly, Seneca would prefer to focus on his new relationship with Chevy, even if he’s worried about the menacing countdown calendar leading to Chevy’s birthday. But when homicide requests some assistance from them, they have no idea what they’re getting into. And if they’d known what would happen, they definitely would have gone with the puppy wrangling.

When an elderly couple is found dead in their own home, Chevy and Seneca are pulled into the case. But what’s unusual is that it appears neither of them were killed; instead, they simply stopped existing. Even with Chevy’s ability to go into the memories of the victims, he’s unable to tell what happened to the seemingly normal couple.

That is, until it happens again. This time, the victims are found alive, all of them kneeling and staring at a blank wall as if hypnotized by it. It’s up to Chevy and Seneca to figure out what is drawing these people and who might be manipulating them.

But when Seneca begins to act strangely, Chevy becomes concerned that he might also be affected by what is controlling the others. Chevy will do anything to keep the man he loves safe and as far from “The Light” as he can. But is it too late?

Lost in the Mind is 94k words of banter, the strangest salad ever, and the strengthening of a bond (especially after Chevy’s birthday). This book follows the events of Within the Mind but focuses on a new case.

✅ Supernatural abilities
✅🆗 Pace
✅🆗 Characters
🆗(❌) Banter
🆗(❌) Dialogues felt juvenile after a while
🆗(❌) Investigation was relayed to the background (at least that is how it felt)
🆗(❌) The plot was convoluted and confusing for most of the book
❌ Banter and sexual jokes even in the middle of a serious situation
❗️❗️Trigger warnings: murders and attempted murders

I will keep this one short because I don't have much to say besides the fact that, sadly, I was bored.

This one just couldn't hold my attention. I was tempted to skim just to get to the end and finally get answers.

When the police find dead people kneeling on their floor and facing their wall, they ask Chevy and Seneca to use their gifts to figure out how they died. When more and more people are found kneeling and watching a wall with a blank expression, they realize that they are all being manipulated and influenced by someone with a strong gift. Someone known as “The Light” allows the victims to be free of their morals and do whatever they want without shame or regret, leading to a rise in violent crimes.

The plot was weaker than in the first book, and I couldn’t get invested in it. I also feel that it dragged on and on forever! The murders were intriguing initially, but I felt that the plot took the backseat while the silly dialogues between Chevy and Seneca took too much room in the book. Those two were not my favorite duo from this author, but in this sequel, I feel that all they do is make childish sexual jokes non-stop, even when it was not the time.

The dialogues between Chevy and Seneca were funny at first but quickly became too much and too juvenile. They also felt repetitive after a while, to the point where I just wanted to skip pages to get to the actual resolution of the plot. I usually love Alice Winters’ humor and brand of absurd and over-the-top characters, but I just couldn’t reconcile their actions with the context they were in. I don’t mind OTT characters and absurd situations, but somehow it didn’t work out for me in this book.

I usually adore Alice Winters' series (well, most of them at least), but this one just was not for me. It feels like it's her first series and she progressed from there (even though I know it is not the case). I will continue reading her other books for sure, I think I just was not lucky with this one. Hopefully, her next one will be more similar to the VRC or the Hitman series.

In this second book, we follow Seneca and Chevy through another case that will require the use of their gifts. Strange things are happening to random people, because when victims are found by the police department, they’re on their knees and with a smile on their faces.

Chevy and Seneca go through their memories, and even though at the beginning they don’t have any answers, eventually they realize the victims were part of some kind of creepy cult. These people are following “The Light” that’s basically a guy with a gift that frees them for whatever restrain they had, and tells them they can do whatever they want to, even if that involves hurting others.

In the meantime, Chevy and Seneca have lived together for a couple of months and their relationship grows quite nicely. I think that what kept me going to the end was the way they trusted each other, and how they became a real couple in the end. But, yes this book had more weight on their banter and their growth, than the case they were solving.

To be honest, plot-wise on Lost in the Mind wasn’t quite as strong as Within the Mind, and that’s why I lowered my rating only to 3/5 stars. Don’t get me wrong, Alice Winters writes the funniest characters ever, and they have sweet and sexy moments together, but for me the book needed a bit more punch to have me intrigued. I knew who was the bad guy the moment I saw him and that’s not the best in a mystery, even if it’s a M/M.

Anyway, I hope you give this book a try. The author makes a wonderful job with both of the MCs and it is quite enjoyable. I would recommend it if you want a nice, light-hearted M/M reading.

Having had mixed feeling on the previous book. I took a small break before starting this. But I settled into it straight way. I enjoyed the characters and their banter much more this time.

The story wasn’t as creepy and I felt much happier all round.

I’ve grown to love Chevy and Seneca. Yes they’re crazy but also laugh out loud funny in places.

An elderly couple is found dead in their own home, Chevy and Seneca are pulled into the case. But what’s unusual is that it appears neither of them were killed; instead, they simply stopped existing.

An older couple have been found dead in their home, kneeling and staring at the wall, with no signs of a struggle. Chevy and Seneca try to go into the victims’ minds to find out what happened, but they aren’t able to get any clues. Then an entire group of people are found, still alive, but also just staring at a wall in a nearly catatonic state. It is clear that something dark and dangerous is going on...but what?

Soon more people are found in this same state, seemingly compelled by this unknown force, and Chevy and Seneca begin to dig deeper, probing some of their minds trying to determine what is causing the strange behavior. It doesn't take long for things to become even worse. Some of the people are able to break free but strangely have lost any sense of right and wrong and start acting out in strange violent ways. Chevy and Seneca themselves become targets as well, as the victims begin turning their hostilities toward them. To make matters even worse...if that is possible, Seneca’s gift of coping the abilities of others, seems to be going "out of whack", Something about his abilities is drawing in both the leader and the followers of this dangerous group. Chevy and Seneca’s lives are at risk, but the connection they have with each other may be just the thing to help them both get out alive.

This second book has most of what has happened in the first book and most of the background explained. The reader would probably understand the "whys" and the "what's" of the happenings here without having read the first book. The two guys are living together and happy to be a couple. Both are recovering from their previous battle with the serial killer.

The stories, in this series, combine the traditional law enforcement investigation with the paranormal and psychological elements as Chevy and Seneca delve into the twisted minds of the victims.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Lost in the Mind is the second book in Alice Winter’s fascinating In the Mind series and reunites us with Chevy and Seneca. The case is new here and most of the background is explained, so while I think your experience would be enhanced here by reading Within the Mind, you could probably jump into this story without having read the first book.

The guys are living together and happy as a couple, recovering from their battle with the serial killer. Neither is particularly thrilled to get called into another homicide case, but they are soon drawn in by the strange mystery of what is causing these people to go into a trance-like state, staring at the wall, and later to seemingly lose all inhibitions and sense of right and wrong. There is someone causing this behavior, manipulating people, but it is not clear how or to what end. Like with Within the Mind, this story combines a traditional law enforcement investigation with the paranormal and psychological elements as Chevy and Seneca delve into the twisted minds of the victims. We also explore each man’s gifts a little more, particularly Seneca’s, and we see how their connection to each other is leading to a growth and change in their individual gifts that ends up having a big impact here. This story is twisty, but not quite as complex as the first book, where admittedly I found myself a bit lost at times. There is a nice mystery and sense of excitement and danger here that carries the story well.

Audiobook review

I really enjoy this world with gifted people and I find both Chevy and Seneca’s abilities really fascinating, going into people’s minds seeing the good and the bad. I can’t imagine it’s easy, but still they do everything to help as many people they can. So when they are asked to once again help the homicide division they agree, not knowing the dangers in store for them.

It was nice to see how Seneca and Chevy’s relationship developed. They had an ease about them that comes from really knowing the other part, yet at the same time, they also had this new-ness feel to it from a new relationship. I love the banter and playfulness they have with each other. It gives the book a lighter feel to it, makes it a fun listen. Lost in the Mind is more toned down compared to the first book. It’s not the non-stop banter that we got in Within the Mindbut was more balanced and well rounded.

Joel Leslie’s performance of this book was fabulous. There is no doubt he elevates this story for the listener. He captured every nuance just right. He almost made me want to examine my own walls for something sinister lurking beneath the surface. He really makes you feel the creepiness from the light and the shadow, the pull towards it. He just as surely delivers the one liners and the banter that defines this series and these characters. He made this listen very enjoyable beginning to end.

I’m not sure if there will be more books to come in this series, but I sincerely hope so. I’m having so much fun spending time with Chevy and Seneca and can’t wait for more.

I actually really loved this book. It was way more enjoyable than the first. The mystery, comedy, and romance in this book was great. This wasn’t as terrifying as the first one with the creepy things that came up buuuut there were parts that if I was alone at home reading this at night I probably wouldn’t be going to bed haha

What would make this a true 5 star would be dual POV.. I wanted inside Seneca’s head, but that is minor because Chevy was a very good narrator for the whole story. I am just a sucker to really get in the heads of both characters.

Now I wish there were more with Seneca and Chevy so I just have to hope that Alice Winters decides to make a 3rd book 🤞🏼

I think there was too much snark - so much from Seneca that I actually lost patience with him ... I could sense vulnerability and emotion at times but his protective layer of sass just didn’t work for me. I struggled to read this series and that disappointed me after 3x5 Star Alice reads before this. Guess you can’t win them all !

Personally, I liked book one a little better, but nonetheless, book two was solid.

The murder mystery didn’t quite draw me in, but maybe that’s because the plot was interrupted extremely often for sex and „hoho he said penis and now I have to make childish comments too“.
That’s just not my jam.

I found the ending of the criminal case extremely exciting and I would have liked to have explored this „reality“ even more - I just have a great love for antagonists and in this case it was particularly exciting.

I would love to read more stories in this universe, but with characters who aren’t „hoho he said penis and now I have to make childish comments“ and immature in their demeanour.

(DEUTSCH)

I'd really love to have more from this series but maybe with pov chapters from Seneca as well as I think it would round out the story.
I listened to the majority of this and it was really well done. To the point I could still hear their voices as I read it

Seneca and Chevy are brilliant! I laughed at every interaction!!

This story follows on from book 1 and Seneca and Chevy are in a new relationship and have moved in together. Seneca is hilarious. I laughed at every page of the story. The way he teases, jokes and interacts with people (not just Chevy) makes for a great read. Chevy is trying to come out of his shell and be more social for Seneca but I think Seneca is social enough for the both of them!!

This story follows Chevy and Seneca as they help the homicide department solve a very unusual case. As the case progresses, and things turn from weird to weirder, Chevy has difficulty figuring out what is going on. Both Seneca and Chevy notice some changes with Chevy’s gift and how Seneca gift interacts with it. While this case is not as twisted and creepy as the case in the first book it is still dangerous and kept me engrossed till the very end. I did, however, guess the possible instigator early on but the interactions, fast speed, and twists and turns allowed for a great read with a great couple at the core.

Seneca is a handful but too hilarious not to love. These two are perfect together and I can’t wait for more mayhem, hilarity, and sappiness in more of their stories!!!

Ahhhhhhhh..... there is so much to love about this series, but #1 is the fact that Seneca and Chevy are THE most hilarious couple you'll ever meet and are absolutely perfect foils for each other's personality. I was literally chuckling most of the way through this mystery and thoroughly enjoyed the way this whodunnit was mapped out. Lots of fun! 5/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The banter in this book is hilarious. Seneca draws everyone into his orbit with his good nature and humor. Chevy's character is not as restrained and standoffish as he is in the first book, which allows him to participate more in the back and forth with Seneca when around others. This gives more depth to their characters and their relationship. Their connection is stronger since the awful times they shared in the first book.
The premise of Lost in the Mind is unique and fascinating and kept my attention throughout the book. The suspense is broken up by the humor which keeps this one from being as intense as the first book, even though the storyline in and of itself is quite intense.
Seneca and Chevy are good, well-rounded characters as are the secondary characters. They are interesting and supportive of the storyline. The relationship between Chevy and Seneca is solid and passionate, and their HEA/HFN is satisfying and believable.
While Lost in the Mind isn’t the mindf&%k that Within the mind is, I enjoyed this one just as much, only in a different way. I enjoyed the stress and trauma the first book gave me, but I enjoyed the fun and humor in this one that kept it from being too overwhelming.
I look forward to more from this author.

Lost in the Mind is the 2nd book in the "In the Mind" series. I would most definitely read the first book Within the Mind...for a few reasons...you will learn so much about this particular world where certain people are "Gifted" with certain abilities that we don't naturally see in this "real" world we live in. You will also get to know Chevy and Seneca and learn how they began working together and how they came to be who they are in this story. You will also learn to love these two and their wonderful ability for snark and sarcasm and yes, love. This story just brings us MORE of what we fell in love with in the first book. The banter alone is worth the price of admission. I would love to be in a room with these two and just listen to them. Chevy is reserved, usually quiet and Seneca...there are really no great words to describe the man he his. This story takes you through another strange, mind driven case and how sometimes, the need to be free, the need for freedom from all that ails you can turn itself on its head and destroy. Loved every minute I was reading this book and believe Alice Winters is a hidden gem who needs to be lauded for an original, fun, suspenseful story.

This is an amazing addition to the In The Mind series and I absolutely loved it. I didn't think it would be possible to surpass the previous book but Alice Winters managed it and I was fully engaged from the very first page. Lost In the mind is beautifully written, sexy, sweet, quirky, emotional, hilarious, gripping, intense, full of suspense and danger, there are many surprising twists, the storyline is wonderful and the characters are incredible. I could not stop laughing at the banter between Chevy and Seneca as well as the crazy situations that Seneca continuously pulls Chevy into. They are perfect for each other and I love how far they have come in such a short time together. I also love Seneca's relationship with Chevy's mom and how much they both love to torment Chevy. The danger and mystery in this story kept me on the edge of my seat until the surprising resolution is revealed and I love the ending. I can't wait to see what happens next in this exciting and intriguing series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

I received this book by the author and This is my honest opinion.

This is the second book, and one I'm really enjoying. Senneca and Chevy is just such a lovable couple and one that made me chuckle with their witty one liners and humour.
The mystery for this duo is what happens when someone can make you free in inhibitions and moral compass, where there no longer restrained by right or wrong and This is the case the duo are investigating. I like that the author gives us a 2 sided coin of being glad the villian is caught but also having sympathy for this person. I liked that it kept me on my toes of guessing who. This author does a brilliant job of comedy characters and interesting plot. A good read.

Seneca and Chevy, Chevy and Seneca. They go together so well. Charming, witty, beautiful Seneca. He always looks perfect and everyone loves him. Chevy is the shy one with the wild, untameable hair. The one who would rather hide in the background or better yet, under his covers with his adorable dog. They are the perfect complement for the other and it shows in this book where the joining of their powers has unexpected effects. The first one had almost too much snark, but this one it seemed balanced much better. I don't know if it's because I read them back to back and am just used to it or if it's grown on me. So happy I found this author and her characters.

I loved Joel's performance and would have gushed about it even if I didn't like the story, but lucky for me, I really enjoyed it too.

In this second installment of these two, we find out that apparently Seneca's power is much different than anyone could imagine and that Chevy has not been using his as much as he could have. The pillowcase cult shows up and hijinks ensue.

I really wish the series had continued but it did make me realize that I need dual povs in my books.

Goodness I rolled my eyes so much I had to shake my head to clear it...
The mystery was decent , its just to personal relationship that was too much. Don't they get tired? Can't they be serious for a second? and how many times did they say "I love" "Do you love me"

sigh

4⭐️ this is the funniest audiobook I’ve ever listened to. It’s just constant hilarious banter between the MCs—even the sex scenes are hilarious—and Joel Leslie makes the humor even better.
The mystery plot was a bit dark and scary so the funny banter created a good balance.

This was soooo good and so scary IMO. What the bad guy was able to do scared the crap out of me. Being able to effect people from a distance is horrifying. I understand that he didn't mean to do what he did with the old couple but that didn't excuse what he did. Not like in the first book where I felt sorry for the bad guy, I didn't for this one. He deserved what he got. Okay so I love Chevy and Seneca. Seneca is sooooooo inappropriate and makes me laugh so much. I have no idea how they keep their jobs. Their love for each other is beyond sweet & adorable. I love that they have insecurities just like anyone else. Seneca really scared me cause we got to see what he could be/do and that kept me on the edge of my seat as I was sacred that it was going to take him away.
