A short guide to giving effective feedback, both positive and constructive. I had been on the lookout for something short and digestible to share with colleagues on how to provide feedback, and this was what I found. The Center for Creative Leadership is known for developing the SBI method of feedback: situation-behavior-impact, and this book is a summary of the method. It breaks down the method explaining the easiest pitfalls of unstructured feedback, namely that much of it focuses on the person rather than the specific situation or skill you may be trying to develop. Removing the burden of the personal can help a person hear the feedback better and internalize it appropriately. The book shares positive and negative feedback words, uses straightforward examples of unstructured vs SBI feedback, and reinforces its method. The second edition includes giving feedback in a virtual setting, because as humans we read different cues on screen than in person.
I highly recommend this for anyone in leadership, human resources, or someone trying to improve constructive feedback delivery.
Very light read, less than thirty pages. However very impactful and helped change the relationships I have in one on one meetings with staff and my boss. The book introduces a model for providing feedback Specific-Behavior-Impact (SBI). The book was accompanied with a live seminar that allowed for practice and hands on experience with the SBI tool.
Good book to know a little bit more about how to give feedback, which is something that everyone should know how to do. A fast read about this subject that is really helpful for those who seek more information about how to give feedback in the best way. 3.5 stars
A decent quick read. The book provides quick pointers to leaders in the art of giving the feedback. This can be used as a quick reference. There are some better books on the art of giving and receiving feedback out there.
Appreciated the brevity and the advice is not bad, but I didn't draw from it any critical insights that I felt I was missing. Doubtful it will actually improve the feedback I deliver, so I regret the purchase and the read.
