Alaska can be a bleak and dangerous place, especially in the dead of winter. But when hair-raising whispers about an outbreak reach the small harbor town of Whitely, the townspeople face a new, unfathomable fear— the virus is coming for them.
Sophie thought life was complicated when she had teen pregnancy and her squeaky-clean reputation as the mayor’s daughter to worry about. But strict schedules and perfectly groomed hair become yesterday’s concerns as bloodcurdling screams pierce the night air and lurid memories haunt feverish dreams. Weak and alone, Sophie must survive the longest, most terrifying night of her life and pray she won’t be the only one left when she wakes.
Alex is the kid from the wrong side of the tracks and trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes. It’s all he can do to keep his head down until his eighteenth birthday when he can leave his life in foster care behind him. But Alex doesn’t realize he and the quiet girl from class with lonely, blue eyes are fated in the most impossible way imaginable. Death is everywhere, and even in the gray dawn of morning, after the fever subsides and the world echoes in silence, Alex will have to face his darkest fear yet.
The Longest Night is a prequel novella in the Savage North Chronicles, part of the bestselling, post-apocalyptic Ending World. You do not have to read The Ending Series in order to enjoy the Savage North Chronicles.

The Longest Night is book #0.5 in the Savage North Chronicles by Lindsey Pogue. You can read this prequel either before or after the first book, The Darkest Winter. In my case, I read it after but either way is fine. This series is a spin off of Lindsey’s Ending series. You absolutely do NOT have to read the Ending series to read this. This prequel focuses on Sophie and Alex, how they met, and what they experienced before The Darkest Winter.
Alex Ortiz was deemed a trouble maker. He had been moved from foster home to foster home and now was being put into the care of his uncle in Whitely, Alaska. Only his uncle is probably worse than any of the foster homes he’s been in. On the first day of school, Alex meets Sophie. She’s the mayor’s daughter but is nothing like he thought she would be. She’s quiet and serious with problems of her own. Problems he suddenly wants to help her with. There has been a fast moving virus in the lower forty eight states and it seems to have made it to Alaska. The people in their building are getting sick fast. And it has hit Alex. Only where most everyone else is dying, somehow Alex has made it through. When he wakes up, though, it’s to a very different world.
Sophie thinks her world is about to be over when she has a pregnancy scare. But it turns out that’s the least of her problems. Everyone is getting sick. It’s gruesome and horrible and she’s scared. With her mother trying to help everyone else, she’s on her own when she comes down with it. But somehow she makes it through.
Since I already have read the first book, I already knew Sophie and Alex. So it was even more special to me to learn how they met and what their first days were like, how they lived through the virus and what they woke up to. And how their little group came together. I have to mention that I did read The Ending Series and was completely obsessed with this world. So, when I learned that there was going to be a spin off series, I was beside myself with excitement. And this series is every bit as amazing. On the first page I’m pulled right back into this world with these characters. I’m hearing that Lindsey is hard at work on the next book in this series and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
So, if you love post apocalyptic type stories of survival, friendship and later on, even a touch of romance, this series is for you. Whether you start with this one or go back to the very beginning with The Ending Series, I hope you fall in love just as I have.
Oh yes, she did! Lindsey Pogue has penned ANOTHER hit and this is just the prequel!
THE LONGEST NIGHT takes into the heart of the frozen north, Alaska in “the dead of winter.” If that isn’t enough to give you chills, a virus is coming, having already overtaken the world’s population and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. For the new kid in town, Alex, life in the small town is already promising to be a nightmare, but he had no idea just how horrendous it would be.
Sophie was the mayor’s daughter and in a tiny, snowbound borough like Whitely, where everyone lived just an apartment away, she had only one concern, why was she feeling so sick? She had symptoms of something that could unravel her perfect little image. Little did she know, she had far more to worry about, like living through the night as one by one, those around her fell to the feverish and gory nightmare that was sweeping her town.
Who knew that after THE LONGEST NIGHT either of them had survived, they could be among the last living souls in town and beyond…
Holy apocalypse! Once again, Lindsey Pogue has taken young adult reading and twisted it into a riveting fight for survival with characters that jump of the pages with that feeling that they are REAL teens, struggling to make sense of a world they don’t recognize without the safety net of adults setting boundaries around them. Pretty sure the edge of my seat will get quite a workout as this series continues! Remote Alaska, frigid temps, a deadly virus…brrrrrr…I’m in!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Lindsey Pogue! This is my honest and voluntary review.

The Longest Night is a peek into The Savage North Chronicles teenage protagonists Alex and Sophie's pasts and the night when the virus hit their town, decimating the population.
Sophie is the daughter of the mayor. When we first meet her, she has a steady boyfriend and is currently terrified that she might be pregnant. She's afraid that if she IS pregnant, she will disappoint her mother and possibly trap herself in an unhappy relationship for the sake of the child she MAY be pregnant with.
Alex is the outsider, the orphan foster kid who has been passed from home to home, earning a juvenile record and a reputation along the way. He is determined that this move will be his last, that he will age out of the system, have his juvenile record sealed and start over fresh.
When the virus hits their tiny town within a single building, nobody is prepared for how fast it would spread, devastating nearly the entire population within days. Alex and Sophie, strangers just days before, are forced rely on each other to survive.
Sophie is living out her worst fears, possibly facing the one situation her mother had always warned her about. She may be pregnant. Her mom, the mayor is already dealing with personal and professional issues, the unexpected pregnancy of her teenage daughter would be too much. However, as the flu that has been sweeping across the lower 48, reaches the remote areas of Alaska, daily concerns become trivial. Surviving is all that matters. Alex is new to the area. He's been in a little trouble in the foster system and was sent to stay with his uncle as a last resort or a new chance depending on your viewpoint. It seems like trouble just keeps finding him though, no matter where he goes. First, the pretty girl with the frightened eyes needs his help, then his uncle gets violent, then it feels as if he may be dying. Sophie and Alex along with every resident in Whitely, Alaska face death over the next several hours. Most don't make it. Those who do, wake up wondering if they are the last person left in the world. Alex and Sophie have no way of knowing how important they will become to one another as they reunite. Along the way, they gather a few other survivors. When the shock wears off, they will have to figure out how to face the new day. How to face the world they woke up to.
This is the prequel to The Darkest Winter, part of the Savage North Chronicles, which is a spin-off of sorts to The Ending Series. Get all that? If you didn't, know that this can be read alone and still enjoyed. However, you would be missing out on one of the best post-apocalyptic series ever! I was obsessed with the original series and have fallen equally in love with this one. Lindsey Pogue manages to capture the horror of the end along with the hope of a new world. Her characters are not superheroes. They are an assortment of everyday people; good and bad, strong and weak. Some will flourish, some will falter. Each will be overwhelmed. I knew Sophie and Alex from the first book of this series. I've watched them struggle and grow. I've watched them go from virtual strangers to friends with the potential of something much more. I loved getting this glimpse into their before; back to the days when they were teens in the normal world facing normal teenage problems. I like Sophie. I love Alex. On the surface, they appear very different but there is something between them from the first moment. They fit. I now understand the nuances between them, the connection, and the awkward moments. This book makes me greedy for more. I want to return to the harsh beauty of Alaska, to Sophie and Alex and their companions' daily fight for survival.
For me, a prequel is that extra gift you get as a reader from an author into the lives of the characters they create. 'The Longest Night' was definitely a treat from author Lindsey Pogue. Having already read the first book in this series 'The Darkest Winter' I got to go back and read the prequel which gave me an insight into Sophie and Alex before their world was changed forever.
I’m loving the journey of these two characters. Alex, who is so much more than he thinks he is, and Sophie, someone who deals with every challenge thrown at her. Lindsey Pogue's clever writing immediately immersed me into her world. I was there! I kept asking myself, "What would I do?" All I know is that this new post-apocalyptic world is full of twists and turns in the fight for survival. This is a fabulous start to a series and I’m eager for more!
In this prequel, Lindsey gives us the children’s perspective on the effects of a great pandemic as it unfolds in front of them. It is real; it is poignant; it was thought provoking. She expertly shows us the fears and angst that goes through a child’s mind when faced with great loss and uncertainty. This is what must be going through the minds of so many children throughout the world. She shows us their resilience and determination to survive in the face of such devastation. This book is a wonderful addition to the Savage North branch in the Ending series. It is a must read for every adult and teens alike. Lindsey takes you through this story quickly and it is over much too soon with a great finale. I encourage you to buy this book for some great reading.
I can't put into words how much Lindsey blew me away with this prequel.
I love how we got a glimpse of what Sophie and Alex went through as the world ended in the Last Frontier before meeting Elle and Jackson. The fear and trials they went through, makes you wonder what kids/teens today might have to experience if the world came to a terrible end.
I loved this book! It really explained who Alex and Sophie are, so that now I wish more of the Darkest Winter was from their points of view. My only complaint is I wish this book was longer, but I guess then it wouldn’t be a novella. This is definitely a must read!
Went back for the breakout to tell us how all the kids got together and a bit about their pass as they where growing up Just about to start book 3 loving them so far
This was just a real quick story on Sophie and Alex in the very beginning. I love both of these kids, or almost adults. Incredibly strong in facing such overwhelming loss and the unknown. I was curious in how this began and I got a brief look into the before of things. I like additional fleshing out of characters whom I love, it makes easier to understand who they are as time goes on and you can understand a bit more the why of the things they do in the now.
Wow. I've been a fan of this series since the first Ending book. I waited with bated breath for this new series to come out. Would it be as good? Could I get my head around a prequel. Because, Frankly, Star Wars ruined the whole 'prequel' thing for me. So, here I am today. Book 1 was good. I enjoyed it. It had a great story, the characters were built up in a way that solidified my interest in this new series. Book 2. i have suggestions for future readers and I advise that you take this very, very seriously. Do not start reading this book at bedtime unless you're not interested in sleep. Do not start this book if you have any real life plans before finishing it. I started this book when I do all my reading, snuggled deep under my blankies at bedtime. At roughly 3 am I knew sleep was not happening! lol OMGOSH! What a book! The drama ... every page packed full of suspense and thrillingness (yes, I know iti's not a real word) and I kept getting pulled into every facet of each character's life and what this 'new normal' was. When I finally finished it (yes, in ONE reading!) I was ..... when's the next book due out??? Then, WTFF????? No teaser chapter???? Oh no!!! NO TEASER CHAPTER for Book 3!!!! I just couldn't even. I was a spot on fan by the end of the Ending series but now???? I am a guaranteed lifelong fan of the author! I'm not giving any spoilers of even telling you what the book is about because that's why you're supposed to read them! I am going to tell you that the story was beyond captivating. I laughed, i cried, I rooted for some characters while I wished ill on others. They were my friends and enemies and frenemies. If you can manage it buy these books because you'll want to read them over and over again. If you can't buy them, then do the Kindle Unlimited thing. So much talent, Ms. Pogue. Congratulation on another well-written series.
Honestly, no notes. Enjoyed this peek into both Sophie's and Alex's lives before we met them in The Darkest Winter!
Glad I read this after book 1, as there's some hints dropped that make more sense after you have some context for the series. And now I have one pressing question that I'm hoping is answered in the next installment 👀 . . . . **content notes: potential teen pregnancy, flashbacks to familial physical abuse, brief abuse in the present (an object is thrown at a character, and there is cussing), mentions of drug addicts, alcoholism, guns are present, blood & dead bodies. . . My Reviews - Savage North Chronicles: #1 The Darkest Winter: 5/5 ⭐ #2 The Longest Night: 5/5 ⭐ (novella) #3 Midnight Sun: 4/5 ⭐ #4 Fading Shadows: 4/5 ⭐(novella) #5 Untamed: 4/5 ⭐ #6 Unbroken: 4/5 ⭐ #0.5 Day Zero: Beginnings: 4/5 ⭐ (prequel novella)
The Longest Night is book #0.5 in the Savage North Chronicles by Lindsey Pogue. You can read this prequel either before or after the first book, The Darkest Winter. I read it first which gave me a nice introduction to Sophie and Alex and the two kids. It also introduced the start of the flu that wiped out the majority of the population although being so secluded in a very small community in Alaska, they had no idea what they were experiencing was happening everywhere.
I really enjoy post apocalyptic stories of survival, relationships that start as a means to survive and build into friendships and family with a touch of romance.
I have read the entire Ending Series that takes place in another part of the country but resulted from the same flu epidemic. You don't need to read it to enjoy this story but it's also REALLY good!
Are your teens ready? August 14, 2019 Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase The Longest Night is a prequel in the Savage North Chronicles by Lindsey Pogue. This one shows us how Sophie and Alex met in the small town of Whitely Alaska and how the epidemic played out there. This book is so good. Very realistic with the family dynamics, smalltown living, and the Author has mastered realistic characters.
I hate being cold, and reading about being cold makes me cold. Still worth it. As usual, Lindsey knocked it out of the park with this prequel! She’s created a world I want to jump into with both feet and ignore real life! Very few authors have that “thing” that makes their books an automatic purchase, but she is one of them. Excellent story- I need more!
For a short story it was excellent. It definitely makes you want the whole story. If all the rest of the books in this series are as well written as this one, then I highly recommend you read them all. I plan to.
Wow first time reading this author and I must say I am impressed. This is a novella but it felt like a whole book. The characters are two young adults and what happened in their lives before the virus hit in a small town in Alaska great intro to get started On the series
First: Does anyone know if this is the proper reading order? I started with ‘That Darkest Winter’ and Amazon has this listed as book 2, but Goodreads has it both as ‘Book 0’ and ‘Book .5’, either way, that puts it before ‘The Longest Night’ which is listed everywhere I looked as Book 1.
Poor experience on that front but onto the reading experience which is more important:
This was a fast-paced, exciting read, that I read second, after ‘The Longest Winter’ and it works. It shows the kids’ final days leading up to their words really becoming flipped upside down and gives the reader a look into their respective headspaces and backgrounds. It was interesting and not bad read in this order.
4 stars.
Audio: The narrators were fantastic and the overall sound quality was flawless.
Also: Thank you so much to the author and/or publisher for distributing this audiobook wide, so that I could hear it!!
I was really excited when I heard that we would be able to backtrack and hear Sophie's and Alex's backstories and therefore, piece it all together. This story tracks the beginning of the end from their eyes, and although we are reading it from the POV of teenagers, it doesn't get immature. From different backgrounds and with very different issues to face, even before the apocalypse, they still both find empathy for the other. A touching story, covering the very real struggle of modern life and delving into the horrors these teenagers face when the few adult figures they had disappear along with the rest of the town. How will they know what to do?
