Build. Evolve. Conquer. The dawn of the Troll Nation has begun …

Roark von Graf—former noble and hedge-mage, current mid-level mob in a MMORPG—has taken down the Dungeon Lord of the Cruel Citadel, but the battle has only started.

Lowen, right hand to the Tyrant King, has come to Hearthworld, and he is building an army of his own. Worse, Lowen and company have taken over one of the most powerful dungeons in the game, The Vault of the Radiant Shield. Even as a Jotnar and a newly minted Dungeon Lord, Roark is supremely outclassed and he bloody well knows it. If he’s going to weather what’s to come and topple the Tyrant King, he’ll have to unlock the secrets of the stolen World Stone Pendant, master his new Hexorcist class, form some very unlikely allies, and most important ... Grief some heroes. Let the games begin!

From James A. Hunter, author of the litRPG epic Viridian Gate Online, and eden Hudson, author of Path of the Thunderbird and the Jubal Van Zandt Series, comes an exciting new litRPG, dungeon-core adventure you won’t want to put down!

PAY UP SUCKA

Rating: 4.4/5

Review: Well no free ARC this time, sucker.

Is no one going to fix the massive plot hole that buggers the whole novel from the get go? Well, like it or not I had to move on and douse myself with content to soothe the ragged edges of betrayal. OK, I am not fine.

Anyhoo, this was another fun read from our dynamic writing duo that I hear are soon to be married! Congrats and all that. Eden is already pregnant so they jumped the gun a bit. Eden Hunter has a nice oxymoronic ring to it. I guess the babies name (if a boy) will be Hudson Hawk Hunter or Triple H, and if a girl – Jamie Den Hunter.

I dig this series and all the supporting characters. There is still that dash of wit and ridicule that the griefing and general interplay creates and a love interest is finally consummated (much like our authors!). This installment felt a bit rushed probably because of the imminent birthing. So quickly shell out some coin cause this time you gotta pay for the ending.

Audiobook. Really fun to listen to. I enjoyed the story and what it is building up to. It was nice to see raw strength win too. Love the gourmet’s weapon. Lol

Yeah, relaxing LitRPG. Nothing earth-shattering, not much settlement-building happening this time around. but an enjoyable tale anyway. I'm still tracking this series. And for a LitRPG, that's a really good sign. Believe me.

The more this fantasy-isekai VRMMORPG Hearthworld series goes on, the more nonsensical and irrational it becomes. This Troll Nation, third volume deals with the arrest of Roark and his retinue by the Emperor and his people. It would be an acceptable story line if they were not NPC's (non-player characters) within a virtual reality game. If the NPC's were true AI's (Artificial Intelligence beings) then it could be more believable but the engineers and the company people meddle into the Cruel Citadel Dungeon, the players troll and complain about the "reactions and difficulty" of the mobs within the Dungeon. If they were truly AI, then it could be believable, but the authors are insisting on, that the NPC's are managed by the game designer and game company. So if the NPC's act like the engineers have programmed then this whole plot arc of "civil war" and "arrest-capture and etc" are impossible. The mobs do not attack each other. The Floor bosses do not attack the Dungeon Lord Boss. The Emperor does not attack, arrest or abduct other NPC's. Otherwise, what is the point of this game? Isn't the point to any game for the players to play it, conquer it and move on? Can NPC's free themselves from their programming? It's impossible right?
Main character, Roark, needs to return to his world. He needs to develop the ability to teleport to his world. So, all of the action, all of the third volume can be thrown in the trash because it does not make the main character Roark, get any closer to getting home. It's like the authors have hit a long long long foul ball, they keep describing the direction, height and path of the foul ball, then they describe the cute girl that catches the foul ball, and the her brilliant smile, how she talks now to her friends and they cheer for her, but, it's still a foul ball, it's not going to move the main plot arc along and the batter (main character, Roark) is still going to need to place the ball in play.
It is an atypical story, but the authors need to make all of this credible, if they do not explain why a "real being" can be "teleported" into a "game world" then that "game world" can have the NPC's (non player characters) act like actual people, without the players of the game ruining this story...then all of this fiction can actually be credible. But if there is no explanation, the authors are going to keep on playing and describing the "foul ball" and the girl, and her friends, but it is really not about the story they created in the beginning. So all of the abilities, all of the action that is written in the third volume is filler because it does not make the main character return home.
All of the NPC's in Hearthworld are coded into the game. None of them disappear o "die" permanently. If a problem develops that the software company and the engineers can't solve they usually just reset the game, roll back the update and make all of the glitches and irregulars disappear. Roark can go back, but wants to stay in the game to protect his friends?? Somebody needs to tell him, his friends are just code and that he could probably get a copy of the game to play in his world if he ever decides to finally go back. So reasons to stay: zero. Logic and common sense is thrown out the window and instead of finishing this story off in 2-3 volumes, the authors went to six volumes and a special extra volume way to create inflation and filler content without going anywhere.

Roark von Graf never imagined how much his life would change when he inadvertently set foot in the world of Hearthworld. He's battled numerous adversaries, pushing forward every second. All the while, he's been learning the ins and outs of his current class. Unwilling to let the Tyrant King shape the world around him, he's promised himself to take him down, no matter the cost. To do so, he'll have to trust in the friends he's made, while building a better world for them at every step.

While I've come into the Rogue Dungeon series via the third book, I have to say that it's captured my attention and kept it with every turn of the page. This book keeps the reader guessing, taking him or her for such an unexpected ride. We're catapulted into Roark's dilemma, one he's unsure of fixing in so many ways.

James and Eden have created such a complex character that it's often hard to know what makes Roark tick. I love the fact that they've turned the book's game mechanics on its axis. While most of us who write LitRPG tend to focus on building worlds around our heroes, these authors have given us a world centered around mobs and NPC's. Among other things, of course. It's such a unique world that you find yourself wondering how they'll be able to further flesh out what they've already created.

That's how good the story is. I kid you not. While this book is a part of a series, it also acts as a standalone. It provides the reader with enough backstory to make them familiar with what's written in books 1 and 2 without bogging down what is waiting in the wings.

Roark has so much to contend with, yet he's not afraid to stand up for what he believes. Not when he has so much riding on his shoulders. Whether he'll make it back to his home world remains to be seen. I so can't wait to see him get there in the long run.

Excellent! Just finished. Review to come as soon as I catch my breath, my health vial is down to a sliver and needs to be restored which could take several hours or days, lol.

Finally finished my review:
Troll Nation, book 3 of The Rogue Dungeon series, picks up right where Civil War book 2 left off. I had to brush up on my gaming skills to get back in the groove but it didn’t take me long. With my health vial at a 100% I eagerly jumped back into Hearthworld.

Roark the Griefer, resumes his role as Dungeon Lord when Lowen arrives on the scene who proves to be a formidable and seemingly unbeatable foe. But I’ve come to expect the unexpected from this larger than life Dungeon Lord. At his side are his loyal followers: goofy-lovable and my fave chef extraordinaire Kaz and his main squeeze sous-chef Mai, crusty old vet Griff, Mac the rambunctious Young Turtle Dragon pet, the midnight-hued beauty Zyra whose poisonous touch can be deadly plus a whole host of others too numerous to list. What I love about this series is I can read a book without having to refresh my memory by skimming over the previous book/s. This usually doesn’t happen in a series with this much action and this many characters but the brilliance of the way this storyline is written doesn’t depend on what came before. It just flows seamlessly. Am I making any sense? To me I make perfect sense, lol.

Threaded throughout this MMORPG are IRL gamers that kick this story into high gear as I was transported between Hearthworld and the real world. There is a lot going on in this book what with Chillend prison, Bad_Karma, PwnrBwner, and Randy, etc. Huh?! You’ll just have to read it because I can’t explain it any better than that.

My health vial is down to a sliver and I have a feeling it won’t be fully restored until the the next book hits my kindle but I do have enough stars, 5 as a matter of fact, left in my Player Special Skills that left me Enchanted: Stars - Level 5!

As always this series does not disappoint as it is filled with action and extreme magical moves and quests which get difficult and infernal testing poor Roark to his limits. Lowen the right hand mage of the tyrant king has somehow managed to arrive in Hearthworld and he is a dungeon lord of the very important Vault of the Radiant Shield, much stronger than Roark and his team but if Roark has to ever achieve his goal of eliminating the Tyrant king he first has to get rid of Lowen. If only he manages to unlock the powers of the stolen world stone pendant which is in his possession maybe he would be able to do so, however so far he had nothing! The description of Chillend prison is awesome and extremely scary but Roark is surrounded by a very crafty and loyal team and I just love to see the way they work together and watch each other's backs. This book is one of the best so far and comes highly recommended.

Book 3 of the Rogue Dungeon series continues to be a fun adventure. In this volume, the authors did address a bit more directly one of the things that bugged me about Book 2 – Roark's ability to beat enemies much higher than him in levels and base stats. It was touched on in Book 2 that Roark is subverting the game's code by making home-brew spells, curses, and enchanted items that the game was never designed for, and here it's more openly suggested that's probably what makes him so uncannily powerful relative to his objective stats – he has magical powers and doodads nobody else in the game has ever seen, due to the simple fact that he's living full-time in this game world, not knowing its rules, and bending it to his will. And he's doing the same thing to the game's NPCs – turning them into real people by believing in them and interacting with them.

I was also pleased that Xera's role as resident obligatory sexy female has been toned down and the romance subplot between her and Roark is very low-key. She's still a pretty one-dimensional character, but her one dimension is more "I like poisoning people" than "please rip my scanty clothes off because I'm the lone female."

Audio Notes: As I mentioned in my review of Book 1, Nick Podehl is a great narrator, and he's still great. "Best audios" stuff. But one thing that's a little annoying about vreading this in audio (and having nothing at all to do with Podehl's talents) is that every time Roark accesses his character sheet, there's a page full of data about him, which would be easy to take in in a glance on a printed page, but in audio, Podehl has to read it all out, so you get a long litany of all Roark's stats every time.

Simply awesome

Troll Nation was great. I am super busy, and I still read this book in a few days. It's compelling, funny, heavy on the action, and an all around fun read. And James Hunter is an independent writer, but all his books have a beginning, middle, and end. And each series has an overall storyline. That is the way it should be. But many independent writers write series where the overall storyline is the only storyline, always ending books, effectively, in the middle of the story. I like that well enough. But I really like that Hunter follows the more traditional way of crafting his novels and series. I get so much more satisfaction when I finish one of his books. And Troll Nation is a great example of this. Great book, great series.

Very different than expected, in a good way!

In a lot of books, getting to book 3 means a finale, a confrontation that ends the major villains reign of tyranny...

But that isn’t the case in this series, the fun is getting started, but there is at least one major ending... the mystery of whether or not we’d find out if Zyra and Roark were attracted to each other. Turns out they are!

But in other points the story is fast and directed. We are seeing the interactions between the different Dungeons... learning a little bit more about what is going on with Roarks quest to save his Vineland... but most of all we learn about where the series is going.

It has set up a. Very interesting future, and I greatly look forward to it.

This one gets a 5 as I find myself even more engaged in this latest book with the travails of the MC and have no significant quibbles. I think two more books should finish this arc (we'll see if I'm right) but there is certainly some room to spin this off. More than that gets into spoiler territory so I'll leave it there.

Doughhead gamers play an increasing role in this book, but I think the motivations of some of them are explored in a more balanced way than some books I've read which include a combo of sentient NPCs and players. Well-written, and it's getting into the meatier parts of the story now so if you liked the earlier books you'll likely like this one even more.

The Dungeon expands and marshals resources for the upcoming armagueddon.

We get more information about the World Stone, but some of the effects of Roark's meddling don't quite fit the paradigm offered. I can only assume that there is more undisclosed background info that will come out, rather than continuity errors.

It will be interesting to see how some of this plays on Earth. You will see that two of the earth players run into a potential major heap of trouble. The book sets up some things there, but we will have to wait to see this. But I have faith in M. Hunter to bring interesting concepts to play there. His books are not absolute masterpieces, but they ARE solid, easy reads.

I mean, it's okay. It has the characters you know and love. Zyra, Kaz, Roark... etc.

It just felt rushed. I especially didn't like ... It was okay. I feel there should've been more buildup to .

I appreciated that the author finally because it was getting very annoying

book three

Mistakes: Any I found are listed on Goodreads. One big one that I will mention is the lazy writing that is IRL. Nobody actually says that in a conversation. They say in real life. You the authors should read your stuff aloud sometimes to make sure that it actually sounds right. I took off a star for all the stupid IRL abbreviations.

Plot: This book felt a bit more like a video game than the first two.

Characters: I’m kind of unsure how to rate them for this book, so Macaroni gets the MVP.

5/10 Don’t be lazy when writing.

Still not bad, as the plot goes, but the lackluster editing really starts rubbing me the wrong way.
Worst of all are the repetitions... You can bet your money on Griff always being called "grizzled old man", Mai is invariably buxom, and Mac's head is scaly, with bulbous eyes blinking out of sync. Ah, yes, and the VIP lounge description copy-pasted from the previous book (including the eXpresso machine) is just weird.
I know this sounds like nitpicking, but the quality of text isn't based on the plot or characters alone.

World building from the ground up

Hunter excels at workd building and characters so his team up with Hudson has been very good so far, what I like best is the twists in magic and development which is what this book really pushes.
Being a griefer is almost a novel profession now and being a troll is surprisingly worthy. Preparing for the clash of Dungeons is looking better and better each book and hopefully the wait is as short as my patience.

Back to fun

One of two major plot snags that I picked up back on the first book has been resolved, or at least it's on its way to getting there.

Let's see what the author does with the second one.

The book felt more enjoyable than the second one and there's a perfect amount of overarching arc to move it forward without it bogging down the story/crisis of this piece of it.

I've never read LitRPG before, I don't think - but I chased down more of eden Hudson's writings, and that led me to Rogue Dungeon. It's episodic but flows well, and is written well; there's an occasional taste of deus ex machina, but then again, it wouldn't fit the RPG genre if it did not. Recommended, and amusing, and enjoyable.

Taking over a dungeon isn't enough for our hero. No, he has to found the world's first mob settlement, and he's got to recruit allies to make it happen. And to do THAT, all he has to do is kill the game's most unkillable hero. Easy. I'm absolutely loving both this hero and this series. This is top of the line litrpg.

This is a good follow on to the previous books, Roark and his crew are as charming as ever. While the middle of the book is a bit slow, the end has a lot of setups pay off in a quite satisfying way. The last battle in particular is excellent. A lot of critical events happen at the end, and we don't get to see the fall out of it so the next book should be really interesting.

Perfect!

This book was absolutely perfect! Love all the characters. Love how this one includes a lot more from the "heroes" while still giving us plenty from our heroes! So very creative and clever. The fact that they could get us to like PwnrBwner at all speaks to how great the writing is. Can't wait to read the rest!!

A very satisfying cliffhanger for once.

Damn good story it will be interesting how the new vassals will be. Its a must read and I suck at reviews. Next to no typos that I noticed and I'm sure they will be edited out on the next rewrite.

Decent story

A MC that if they have time to prepare is decidedly OP. Most of the story logic flows as one would expect. I'm still wondering about the relationship amongst the 3 realities we know. Mildly annoyed that we don't know what the current main bad is doing.

Had a lot of fun staying up reading this. There's some typos along the way and a couple inconsistencies on the stat images but nothing major or anything that interferes with the story. I like how the world is expanding and I'm excited for the next iteration.
