As a child, Dave Cravens planned to grow up to be a superhero, the first person to capture Bigfoot and Nessie on film, pilot experimental aircraft out of Area 51, develop cold fusion, and star and direct in his own blockbuster action movies so he could retire at the ripe age of twenty-five and raid tombs the rest of his life. Instead, he got a degree in journalism, which he hasn’t used at all other than to justify his incredibly insightful and valid complaints about the state of journalism. During his twenty-two years in the video game business, he’s written for award winning franchises, directed TV commercials and movies, sprained his ankles numerous times in ultimate frisbee games and published three original novels.

This was so much fun. It is a murder mystery, a dead principal of a school, a perfect whodunit, investigated by a award-winning, foul-mouthed, mother of three, Parker

My first book by Dave Cravens, and the first few pages had me laughing with unadulterated joy at the sheer brashness of the main character. I could feel her impudence, her boldness, and her righteousness. The author has done a brilliant job giving me a storyline which is cozy in the outer theme but a pure murder investigation in its core.

The story started with a brisk pace and continued running till the end reveal. Parker, after being suspended indefinitely due to her honest reporting about a crooked senator, had to move cross country to stay with her mom and deal with school and PTA. The horrors!! 😂

The book gripped me from the beginning to the end with Parker having one mishap after the other, late for school, car stolen, skirmish with the principal, car returned lovingly with the dead principal. I had to laugh at the irony of it. Parker was the centre of this mayhem trying to find a murderer and dealing with PTA to organize a fundraiser. And yes, find the real murderer too in the process. I simply loved Dave's writing and didn't mind all the swearing because I too would have been uttering the same words, had I been in the same position.

I liked that I couldn't guess the perp, the author kept me on my toes in this one. A fantastic fun read. I loved it.

This was one messed up murder mystery and I loved every word of it. I was laughing from the first page and the last page brought a tear to my eye.
The bad guys were bad - until they weren't, or they were totally evil, and the good guys were idiots until they were bad guys, or until they were vindicated. You never knew who did what until the very end of this one. Some fun!

I received this book free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A hotshot reporters gets fired and moves back to suburbia with her mother. She gets in trouble trying to take her children to school on the very first day. She clashes with the Vice Principal from her youth, and has all the parents down on her. Then the VP is murdered.

It's okay, turning unexpectedly grim at the end. I feel like the author tries a little too hard to make her sleuth seem cool.

Mayhem, Murder and the PTA by Dave Cravens introduces the reader to Parker Monroe who is a journalist recovering from a huge misstep in her career. To reset her life she moves across the country and back home with her mother and three children. Upon her return she is confronted by the vice principal of her former school who is a bit of a nemesis. Shortly thereafter, a murder occurs and Parker and her inquisitive nature quickly gets wrapped up in the subsequent events.

This book is what I would categorize as a humorous murder mystery. While there are some dark elements, the book isn't too heavy. The author provided enough detail to keep the reader engaged. While the advanced readers copy of the paperback I received is is more than 400 pages, all of the chapters are all relatively short and the spacing is generous, so it's probably not a true 434 pages. I enjoy mysteries, and this one did not disappoint. I was invested in completing the novel because I wanted to find out how the myriad of characters fit together. Cravens did an exceptional job of giving all the characters - primary, secondary, and tertiary - a purpose and making it easy to discern individual within the entire cast of characters.

My critiques include the incongruence in the author's writing and voice style. He would change from third person omniscient to the main character, Parker, talking to herself which almost made it seem as though he was switching from third to first person. It created some inconsistency for me and caused me to have to re-read several passages. Additionally, I was not a fan of the foul language. I get that Cravens wanted the protagonist to be "tough-talking," independent, and flawed, but I think the obscenities were overdone. Using curse words doesn't make you tough nor does it make you appear tough. It was very easy to tell that this character was written by a male. She almost seemed like a male character in personality. In conjunction with the language and abundance of Bon Jovi references, who the author clearly has an affinity for, I just wasn't impressed. In fact, I think if these were reduced, the book could have been about 1/4 shorter in total. Also, I don't think the sole sex scene was needed nor was it germane to the overall mystery. It definitely could have been left on the cutting room floor. The book is dialogue heavy. There are more direct quotes in conversation and not a lot of vivid descriptions. It seems as though the author took the approach to tell rather than show what was happening.

Recommendation: At any rate, I did enjoy the book. I found it humorous, witty, and engaging. I think fans of the mystery genre would enjoy this. It can easily been read in a couple of days.

Until next time ... Read on!

Regardless of whether I purchase a book, borrow a book, or receive a book in exchange for review, my ultimate goal is to be honest, fair, and constructive. I hope you've found this review helpful.

This book was a hoot! Parker really is my spirit animal - or rather person! From the start Parker seems to have one mishap to another happen, with a little swearing here and there (which didn't bother me in the slightest - hello spirit person!) which given the circumstances was understandable. She has moved back to her childhood home town Oak Creek with her three kids following her getting fired, and soon finds herself involved with her children's school PTA, investigating a murder and uncovering more than she every thought possible.

Dave Craven's really had me not only laughing at poor Parker when things went wrong, but also his descriptions of the PTA cliques were 100% spot on! I could identify them all when standing the school yard at my own kids school! The story is one that will suck you in as you follow Parker trying her damnedest to find the killer and I have to say I did not see the culprit coming - talk about hiding in plain sight!

This is a book that is a break from the norm, I has humour mixed in with the serious making this a great combination to read

Entertaining murder mystery. I loved the protagonist and the story line holds your attention throughout the entire book. I laughed out loud at points, particularly when reading descriptions of PTA members. Classic. Also, did anyone else envision Glory as Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused? I was waxing nostalgic as I came across other familiar characters - Klingsborn the piano teacher, Keiser the science teacher, Buck the school counselor, to name a few. And if you missed the Spinal Tap reference, go back and read the book again! Highly recommend this book, and others by this author!

I won this book through a goodreads giveaway. It was a fun read. Some of the characters were over the top, to the point of cartoonish, which got to be a it much occasionally. Otherwise, it was a fun mystery.

I was gifted an e-copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review to form part of the virtual book tour.

Must be honest, i'm not the biggest fan of the cover - but what is that famous saying again? oh yeah - don't judge a book by it's cover.

The early stages of the book were funny and a very entertaining read but I didn't really understand the purpose or the emergence of the main story line. Shortly, this changed and I was immediately hooked in to the book.

I love the mystery that threaded itself throughout the story and the family pulls along the way. The characters were all very well developed and I felt a very good attachment to them all, which is quite rare for me.

The language, humour and writing style with Dave adopted throughout this book was right up my street. Probably wouldn't be suitable for a younger audience due to language and sexual references.

Another aspect I enjoyed was Parker's thoughts in italics throughout the book. This really added to her likability and understanding of her personality - for me anyway.

I gave this book a 4 stars out of 5. I would recommend. Narrowly missed out on the 5 start rating due to the slower than necessary start.

I received a copy for an honest review. What follows is my opinion and mine alone. There was no compensation for this review.

Now that's out of the way, this book . . . well, it took a little bit for me to get into the flow of this book. First off, the size of the paperback felt a bit daunting. I mean this thing looks huge! Turns out, what you see isn't always what it is. Nope, the print is actually a bit large. Which I have no complaints about! I can read it without my glasses and I know my sister (she's dyslexic) or my best friend (she's legally blind) could read it too.

But, what really made the book a challenge, in the beginning, was Parker Monroe, our main character. Right off the bat, I didn't care for her. She is abrasive, argumentative, and cusses a lot. The last part doesn't actually bother me, I do too. After a few chapters though, I could see that the first Parker I met was really just coping with something bigger. Yes, you find out what is causing the stress right away, but you don't necessarily see the implications of it unless you push past the first ten chapters.

Don't worry though, the chapters are quick.

There were characters that I liked (Parker's mother is awesome) and there were others who seemed to be caricatures of what you would suspect (I'm thinking the PTA). That said though, it is the story that grips you. I honestly didn't know what to expect or see and when the final reveal happened . . . . I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!

The writing is easy to get into and again, once you get past the abrasive Parker (who I am now beginning to see similarities with me) you get a story that is part mom trying to fight for her children's music program, part solving serious crime, and part navigating the world of single parenthood.

This was one of those reads that I did enjoy and reminded me that I shouldn't judge a book by its physical exterior and not to judge the main character from your first impression.

Final Rating: 3/5

I always like my murder mysteries on the lighter side with a bit of humour thrown in to offset the ugly details of death. Dave Cravens offers just that in Mayhem, Murder and the PTA, his first title in this genre. And as someone ended up unexpectedly home with the kids for many years, I enjoyed the crazy characters offered at the local school - from parents to teachers to office staff - as well as the inevitable political infighting. I also loved that the main character as well as her mother were strong females who stood tall and let their opinion be known.

In this book, the lead character, Parker, had recently lost her husband - a musician who had given up his career to be a stay at home dad, The book opens with her also losing her job as a journalist. She had taken the chance of going to publication with a story before she had the hard documentation in hand. Her source disappeared instantly, leaving her hanging in the wind. To make it all work she, horror of horrors, moves home to stay with her mum and try to fill her husband's shoes. She does it badly and with lots of swearing (not recommended if this offends you). The vice-principal she is having a very public fight with ends up missing and then very, very dead. Suddenly she has the scent of a new story. No one wants her to pursue it, especially her family, but she can't let it go.

What follows is a wild ride. The story line moves from hilarious moments that had me laughing to dangerous moments where her life is threatened. In the end the suspect shows his hand, but it turns out to be an upper hand. Will she survive to tell the tale?

Mayhem, Murder and the PTA is the first book I have by Dave Cravens. It will not be the last. It tells the story of single mother, Parker Monroe, an investigative journalist. She gets herself into a little bit of trouble and winds up losing her job and finds herself having to her rural childhood hometown. She quickly realizes that this town if full of gossip and drama, and finds herself in yet more trouble. With her investigative mind, she starts to investigate the murder of the vice principal of her children’s school.

I enjoyed Mayhem, Murder and the PTA. I was not expecting this book to be so very good. I found myself laughing out loud from page one. Parker Monroe is one woman not to cross. She cracked me up throughout the book. Especially, when she was butting heads with the PTA members and school principal. I admire her courage and determination. It was fun getting to know her. I never knew where she would end up next. The mystery of who did it had me guessing up until the end. Even though the size, I had no problem reading this book from start to finish in one sitting.

I am giving Mayhem, Murder and the PTA a very well deserved five plus stars. I can not wait to see where else the imagination of Dave Cravens takes his readers to next. I highly recommend this one. It is one not to be missed. It is among one of my favorite mysteries I have read this year.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Who done it and why?

When a prize winning journalist loses her job, the family moves cross country to live with her mom. They arrive the night before the first day of school and just make it in time for the opening bell. Life from then on just continues to be filled with one adventure after another.
Parker has a throw-down with the vice principal at the PTA meeting, her car is stolen, then returned with the body of the vice principal inside, one teacher beats the crap out of another and is arrested for the earlier murder.
How can a single mom find the real murderer, organize a fundraiser to keep the music program going, and help her children come. to grips with their father's death and stay sane herself? Confused? So was I!
The solution eluded me until very near the end of the book. It was a joy to read, believable characters and action,.

This book will let you sit on the edge of the couch

As much as I love reading contemporary romance, I admit reading suspense or mystery is my 2nd favorite genre. This book will let you sit on the edge of your couch. It so good that I cannot put it down. My very first book of the author and I become a new fan.

This book is funny. I laugh out loud so many times. There are so many twists and turns. You think you figure out the killer but you were wrong. I never see that coming. This book is an amazing read. Parker never stops to amaze me. This mom has it all, from downfall to being a hero. She never stops to make her daughter's love for music despite what happened. Having a pure heart is always the best. Rewards will come as a surprised.

The story in this book is fine, a classic whodunnit, but the main character was a woman written by a man who in my opinion hasn’t met many women or mothers. She was very unrealistic and reacted to situations in ways that made me roll my eyes repeatedly.

Strangely the kindle version of this book seems not to have been edited! Multiple spelling and grammatical errors kept distracting me from the story, and very simple edits could have fixed that. I can’t tell if this was self-published, but even if it was, one proofread could have cleaned it up nicely.

Mayhem, Murder and the PTA by Dave Cravens was a well written murder mystery that took place in a small town. I really liked Parker as she was a strong woman and a single mother of three that was able to take care of her family. Too often strong female characters are propped up by a male character in fiction books, but that was not the case here as Parker was strong enough to stand on her own. I liked watching Parker trying to figure out what was going on while also being a mother.

PTA Mayhem

This is an amazing story about a horrible crime that was being covered up by local autthorities. After suffering huge losses of her owm Parker moves back to her mom's house with her three kids. She was a crime reporter and she didn't make a very good impression taking her kids to school. Things went downhill from there. The characters are very good and have their own quirks.

This was the first book I've finished in a long time & it was everything I could've hoped for.

It had mystery, well-developed characters & Parker (the main character) cracked me up with her smart mouth & behaviors.

Great book! I've already recommended it to a number of my friends.

Sidenote: If swearing offends you, this may not be the book for you because there is definetly "language" in it. But it is a really entertaining book if you can overlook that.

Kindle Unlimited ebook. This was a good old fashioned whodunit, my issue was really just the constant, mostly unnecessary bad language, especially the fact that she talked that way in front of and to her children and in inappropriate places like PTO meetings and at the kids’ school. Could have toned that down a bit

As someone who has been on an elementary school PTA... I saw this book on my kindle ad and knew I had to read it. And once I started I couldn’t put it down. Who died? Who did it? How was the PTA involved?

Mom... don’t read it
