“Cooter” by Ken Goldman

Of this collection of twenty-two tales of revenge, my favorites are as follows: “The Shakes” by Kenzie Jennings, “A Little Respect” by Thomas Gunther, “Head” by Duncan Ralston, “Lifting the Weight” by Ali Abbas, “Little Black Book Turns Red” by Robert Essig, and “Steadfast Shadowsong” by Matthew R Davis.

The grotesque horror elements in “The Shakes” and ““Little Black Book Turns Red” had me shuddering. The protagonists are quite different; the former is a woman scorned and the latter an aging playboy, yet the description of the vengeance wrought in each story was vivid enough to elicit a visceral response. The dark humor in “Head” kept me chuckling. The protagonist in “A Little Respect” is a repugnant man-child who deserves every ounce of comeuppance he receives. The world building in “Lifting the Weight” drew me in, especially the idea of the protagonist carrying the weight of his sins that varies based on his actions. Of course, the author puts him in a great situation with plenty of opportunities to add to or lesson his burden. “Steadfast Shadowsong” involves collateral damage. The shrapnel from the retribution maims all in its path, affecting the world of every single character.

A superb example of what a great anthology should be. I always keep a small notebook nearby to keep track of favorite stories as well as authors to look into. After the fifth story I realized I was writing them all down! Good for my never ending search for new authors, not so much for my to read pile. Haha
Some of my personal favorites were (and please dont think I mean these are the only ones worth checking out. You may like some I dont and vise versa. These are the ones that really stuck out for me.)
Odin's Eagle by Christine Morgan. Nothing more bad ass then Vikings and she brings Norse Mythology to life in a brutal and beautiful way.
Nemesis by C. Derrick Miller. A wickedly fun sci-fi take on an old classic.
Eventually Your Demons Take Over by Mack Moyer. I wish I could share what I wrote in my notebook here. The story starts...almost mundanely but it quickly veers into holy s#*& territory leaving you a little stunned and breathless. Definitely an author I want to read more of.

Amazing stories

This was a great read, filled with short stories, each bringing a whole new level of story to your minds. I haven't got a favourite per sei but the last story with copter definitely got to me a bit. Probably as I'm a big animal lover, with two doggies I love more than anything. So yeah that hit a bit, also the whole creepy thought of that becoming real is extremely disturbing. But every story has its own unique flavour and grabs your attention. I'm not a huge fan of short stories but I keep being advised to try certain ones and I'm not disappointed I tried this one in the least. It really was that good. Definitely recommend it.

This is an excellent anthology of revenge stories. My favourites...
Nemesis is a retelling of a beloved children's story.
Steadfast Shadowsong is a dark and brilliant story about music as a means of revenge.
Shakespeare Said A Thing is a dish best served cold.
A Waiter's Revenge is for anyone who has ever worked as a server.
Samantha is a nasty little story written by my friend Jeremy Megargee @xbadmoonrising
There's something here for everyone.
