When the Civil War was finally won by the Union, and all African Americans' chains were broken at last, the military leaders could never have dreamed that within the next half century, the United States would emerge as one of the world's greatest military powers during the Spanish-American War. And when those soldiers won the struggle against Spain in Cuba, they could never have dreamed that later in the century, Cuba itself would turn against them and become the single greatest threat of nuclear annihilation during the Cold War.
When the Wright Brothers first took to the air and Thomas Edison made the lightbulb, they could never have dreamed that American innovation would produce not only the Ford car, basketball, the telephone, and Facebook, but it would also be instrumental in creating the atomic bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of people and finally brought an end to the Second World War. As for Martin Luther King, Jr., he did dream. He had a dream of equality and brotherhood, and his dream at least partially came true in 2008 when America saw the inauguration of its first black president. Never could the slaves of the great plantations of the South have dreamed that that day would ever come, but it did.
Nobody could have dreamed it, but it all came to pass, and it became the history of the United States of America. And this is how it all happened...

Well written
This history is concisely written an hits most of the high and low points of U.S. history. I like that it did not sugar coat the lows on history.

Quite a nice and Fantastic read. Can be finishe in a couple of hours. Nicely summarizes American history in a concise manner.

Great book but What's Elvis?
First off, Yes I'm an Elvis fan!
This book has kept me reading and reading all the way through with me ignoring the surrounding world because I was so interested. It went back as far as it possibly could and did a perfect job of keeping me enthralled. And I'd recommend this book to everyone with an inkling of interest in America.
But nowhere did it mention Elvis Presley who is a huge part of American history. Not only did Elvis revolutionise the wor!d he played a great part in the civil rights movement by showing the world how to walk side by side with black Americans and rather than criticize them, show how they play a part in American music And society. And many white people were hugely influenced by Elvis. So yes, for that reason alone I mark this book down to a four star.
I'm looking forward to reading more from the captivating history range, hoping they live up to the almost perfect quality of this one.

Wow, thank God this is a short book or it would have P.O.ed me worse. First how can you write a brief history of the US, call it a captivating guide to its history and spend most of the pages on war, fighting and slaughter... some good stuff must have happened too, right. Well the only good stuff is the mention of killing Osama bin Laden at the Start of the first black POTUS in history, Barack Obummer. I didn't like it because I found many of the stories slanted, by at minimum the pace we progressed through history But also the SJW point made for the author's NY Times best seller pitch. Enough said, if give a chance again, I choose Not to read this book.

While being an overall good summary of the history of the United States, it often over-simplifies events & does not really go into detail. The analysis of more controversial parts of American history (slavery, civil rights, atomic bomb, native americans, etc.) is good but seems a little too shallow.
For anyone, who wants to gain a high-level understanding of the Highlights of American history, this book is the right choice but in no way „captivating“

History
This book is about the history of the United States, some parts are covered with great depth others are just touched on and certain eras are completely left out
Some presidents are mentioned, while others are left completely out along with certain eras. It's important to know, if nothing else, the highlights of every era and president
This is an interesting book on United States history but for the reasons above, it only gets four stars.

The book was written well. However, I didn’t learn a lot of new information. Many things are missing such as the Vietnam War, Korean War, and information about presidents that many Americans don’t know much about. Not a bad book, but very incomplete.

Another quick summary to get started on the topic! Captivating History is amazing! You get everything you need to know here plus it's not boring at all like a lot of the more fact focused books I run across... Heck do one on MS-13 and include interviews! I know you guys would do great! Jackson is now my most hated president... Trail of Tears a big bomb for you Jackson 💣

Even though is a short and condensed book, it’s worth the effort to at least start building the founding knowledge regarding to the United State history.
