World-renowned adventurer and broadcaster, Bear Grylls, presents some of the most incredible near-death experiences, told by those who lived to tell the tale. These extraordinary and diverse accounts of human bravery, mental and physical strength - and sometimes sheer luck - range from being stranded for more than 50 days at sea, to surviving world-changing acts of terrorism.
Bear contextualises each feat of endurance or bravery by relating them to his own experiences of near-misses and misfortune from his military career and survivalist adventures. Listeners will experience the firsthand retelling of acts of quick thinking and gruelling struggles of those who found themselves in some of the most extreme circumstances imaginable.

Bear Grylls has become known around the world as one of the most recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started in the UK on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places, and after enduring months in military rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one of the youngest ever climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Bear went on to star in Discovery Channel's Emmy nominated Man Vs Wild and Born Survivor TV series, which has become one of the most watched shows on the planet. Off screen, Bear has lead record-breaking expeditions, from Antarctica to the Arctic, which in turn have raised over £2.5million for children around the world. In recognition of his expertise and service, Bear was appointed as the youngest ever Chief Scout to 28 million Scouts worldwide, awarded an honorary commission as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Navy, and has authored 10 books, including To My Sons.
I listened to this first time around in 2020, it being a free podcast on Audible. I loved it, which was no surprise to me. Stories of people surviving deadly, perilous situations is always interesting, especially when there's a dangerous animal involved.
So, the other day I just decided to give it another quick spin, and I loved it just as much, if not more. While some of the stories are better than others, they are all fantastically told and wonderfully produced. I can't remember the names of everyone, so I will just mention the situations instead. Highlights for me were the guy who was ambushed by a hippopotamus, the guy who was seemingly led out of the World Trade Center on 9/11 by his guardian angel, and the guy who survived a bull shark attack just off the Opera House in Sydney Harbour. Extra points for that one, since it happened in my own home city, I remember when it actually occurred, and I am obsessed with bull sharks and an enthusiastic insister of their presence not just in the harbour but the expansive river system too.
I was expecting Bear will share stories about his near death experiences. Instead, it's a collection of interesting interviews with people that were very close to death. Hippo and shark attack, cutting own hand that's stuck under a rock, bomb explosion and 9/11, trapped under snow, shipwrecked, tsunami, parachute failure... Pretty much list of worst nightmares.
When starting this audiobook, I was expecting Bear Grylls to read the stories or recount his survival stories but it was different people recounting their survival stories. It was good but this felt more like a podcast than an audiobook.
Brilliant and horrific short little survival stories narrated by the people who encountered them. Each story is only about 15 mins long so I did them all in one go. I now feel inspired and a little in awe of each and every person in this series who survived their ordeal.
Passed a (very short) amount of time. The stories are obviously all very interesting, everything from being buried under ice, to attacked by various animals, to 911. But too short to really do more than mildly get your attention.
8 fascinating, terrifying, amazing stories of survival from deadly animals and natural disasters to terror attacks! Listen to audio version- truly humbling to hear these stories from the mouths of the people who experienced it!
Interesting and emotional set of stories of survival. Each story was a separate story and the only thing that bothered me was the unnecessary commentary from Bear Grylls
A very fascinating group of true survival stories! A great way to keep an hour when free or need something to listen to while you work, I really enjoyed this collection and would definitely be up for a series 2 if they do one.
Had the Audio book, disappointed with the typical American style re introduction of what the book is about over and over in between each episode. Otherwise very interesting.
