Beatrix the Bold and the Curse of the Wobblers

Rate this book
'What a rollicking olden-days adventure this is, replete with mystery, secret passages, menacingly elusive enemies and a main character readers will truly root for' JOANNE OWEN, author of MARTHA MAYHEM

Ten-year-old Beatrix is very good at telling jokes, dancing and throwing knives. She also happens to be a queen of a distant land - though she doesn't know that yet. She also happens to be the queen who is quite possibly destined to lead the Wobblers to bold victory over the Evil Army - though she doesn't know that yet either. Beatrix lives in an enormous golden palace with Aunt Esmerelda the Terrible and Uncle Ivan the Vicious, but as she's only been allowed to see one new room per birthday, she's only ever been inside ten rooms of the palace. Her aunt and uncle have always told her that if she goes beyond the woods outside the palace she'll fall off the edge of the world. And the Dark, Dark Woods and all that lies beyond must be avoided at all costs - what if the dreaded Wobblers were to get her? But finally, the veil Beatrix has been living under is starting to slip. Beatrix knows she needs to be bold. Beatrix knows she needs to look for answers. And she's about to get them.

Ten-year-old Beatrix is the Queen of Morden, although she doesn’t know she is the Queen. She lives in a higgledy-piggledy palace twice the size of Buckingham Palace with her Aunt, Esmerelda the Terrible and her Uncle, Ivan the Vicious who was paid a lot of gold by her parents to keep her safe.

Beatrix has never stepped foot outside the castle, though she does have plenty of rooms to choose from to spend her time, ten rooms, in fact, her Aunt gives her a new room for her birthdays. She has the Garden Room which has no roof and is filled with flowers, a waterfall, and a cave so it feels like she is outside. There is the War Room where she practices learning how to throw her knives and defeat armies. There is even a story room.

Beatrix is desperate to go outside but her Aunt warns her about the Wobblers that live outside and takes little girls, she also states that at the end of the dark, dark wood the world ends and it is just a sheer drop. One day Beatrix overhears her teacher and her Uncle having a conversation about an evil army coming to the castle to kill the Queen. Beatrix is intrigued she wants to know why and who is this Queen, she has never seen a Queen in the castle before.

Beatrix needs to be brave and bold if she is to find the answers.

Beatrix the Bold and the Curse of the Wobblers is an exciting and humorous children’s book that features one very brave young girl who doesn’t realise she is the Queen of the land. The book has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and numerous place names and characters with names that will make kids (and adults) chuckle.

She doesn’t know what happened to her parents as no-one will tell her, she does know that there is a big secret and she is going to find out what it is and learn about her family and why she lives with her Aunt and Uncle. Along her journey, she meets Dog, the Dog, and Oi a young boy who helps her discover the truth.

This is a book that will have children glued to the pages, especially with all the references to modern-day items, comparing them to those from old times, and the bad jokes too! It is full of life and the writing and the black and white illustrations throughout makes the story come alive.

This is the first book is a planned series and with book two just released this month, I look forward to reading it and carrying on Beatrix’s adventure in Beatrix the Bold and the Riddletown Dragon.

This is one of those rare books that is just heaps and heaps of fun for both children and adults.

Beatrix is a little girl who lives in a very big palace. She lives with her Aunt Esmerelda (the Terrible) and Uncle Ivan (the Vicious). Her aunt and uncle have always told her that if she goes beyond the woods outside the palace she'll fall off the edge of the world, but is that really true? And what is the big secret that everyone but Beatrix seems to be aware of?

Beatrix and the Curse of the Wobblers is an excellent kids book. Highly recommended.

Simon Mockler has created an entertaining story about a 10-year-old girl called, Beatrix, who is a queen but doesn’t know. Her status made her a target for the Evil Army and she was sent to live with her aunt and uncle who were paid to protect her. Initially, her aunt, Esmerelda, was happy with the generous payments her sister made. But lately, she has become bored with the arrangement.

Meanwhile, Beatrix is frustrated with all the limitations placed on her. She is confined to live in ten rooms and never allowed outside. She is suspicious that information is being kept from her. The real action begins when Beatrix is betrayed to the Evil Army.

The first few chapters contain a lot of description and explanations, yet this sets the tone for the rest of the book because the descriptions are unusual and visually engaging. Mockler uses a conversational approach and compares life in the palace to things that modern children would be familiar with. It creates an amusing feel to the story, which is important because the evil characters are obsessed with killing people. At times though, I found the plot a bit weak and some characters lacked the motivation to act as they did.

Beatrix’s betrayer escapes to wreak more havoc and provide material for future books in the series.

Overall, it’s a fun story.

This is a story about a girl called Beatrix . Her Aunt Esmerelda loves gold and everyone secretly calls her Esmerelda the Terrible . She also has an uncle called Ivan , he is always busy with his war planning and his favourite thing to do is throwing knives 🔪 and teaching Beatrix to throw knives .
Mrs.Fartinpants is her cook 👩‍🍳 and helper she opens each door 🚪 whenever Beatrix wanted to go inside . Beatrix was not allowed to go out of her palace as if she would go out of the four walls she would get to know about her huge friend .
In this book there are also some great things to make .

The first in a series.

For the most part this does read like a mystery. The main character has a secret to learn and I won't spoil what that secret is in this review.

The jokes are age appropriate and the names are often jokes. The story worked and showed that even the humblest person can make a difference. It set up the sequels without just feeling like exposition for them.

I enjoyed the read and would recommend it. It entered a crowded market but stands above most of its competition.

I read this book with my ten year old and he absolutely loved it! So much fun, my kid was laughing at all the silly names. Beatrix is smart and brave. He was very happy that she found a friend in Oi.

I thought the story was well paced and had a great amount of humour. We will be picking up the next book I’m sure.

Excellent. Funny, well-written, great heroine and a dearth of waffle (this is a good thing as children's authors are often keen on four sentences when one would suffice).
