Oh, was this bio day? Oops! I forgot. I was lost in my latest manuscript. Umm... bio. Yeah.
Hi! I’m Chautona Havig. (for those who care, that’s Shuh-TONE-uh HAVE-ig). Yeah. Just work with me here. I should have used a pseudonym, but when you grow up with a name like Chautona, it kind of sticks.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. ~ Hebrews 10: 23–25
Those aren’t just words on a page for me–they’re why I write. I write to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. The stories I create are to make people laugh, cry, question, consider.
They’re for you.
When the world screams for hope, I try to point you to the true Source of hope–Jesus.
Sometimes life in the church no longer seems a refuge from the pain of a self-serving world around us, but through my stories, I try to point you to the only Refuge that can truly help–the Father’s Everlasting Arms.
And sometimes we just need an escape from the monotony, the emptiness we see around us. We need joy, laughter–what I like to call “just the write escape.”
Christian fiction without apology or pretense–lived, not preached. What does that even mean? It means I care–about you. About your walk with Jesus. I care about the words you put before your eyes, the mental pictures those words conjure. It’s difficult to express just how much I love my brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s difficult to share just how much I love you.
But I do.
And I write for you. I sit in my little house in California’s Mojave Desert and I write to show you why one sister believes one thing, why a brother believes another. I write to show you how some Christians handle trials or triumphs–for you. So when you’re faced with something–good or bad, it doesn’t matter–maybe it’ll spark a memory. Maybe that memory will smolder until you pull out your Bible and see what the Lord said about it–about His great love for you. For YOU!
And maybe, just maybe, you’ll share that love with another hurting, confused, or blessed-with-more-than-she-knows-what-to-do-with soul.
I just happen to think that’s the most blessed giving anyone could hope to receive.
I had a quandary several weeks ago. I had two different books from Chautona Havig to read, and couldn’t decide which one to read first. I discussed my problem with Mom, and she recommended I read this book—even though it is as long as it is, she thought I would really enjoy it. So I tried it, and I did!
I love it when authors take a concept we’re all familiar with and turn it on its head. I haven’t seen it done very often, but Chautona did it well in this book. While we all know the general plot and reasons behind a typical romance book you’d pick up these days, this book is completely different—and somewhat the same. What would happen when two people decide that it’s a good idea to get married, not so they can fulfill their own wishes, but so they can glorify God?
Though it’s such a different book from most you’ll read, it’s such a needed one, as well. Even though I am single and still at home with my family, it was really encouraging to read this story because the obvious application is so much broader than just marriage. Yes, marriage is intended to glorify God, but every other aspect of our life is also intended to glorify Him—how we relate with others, what we do, etc., etc. For me, seeing that worked out—and the troubles and triumphs along the way—were what made this book shine. So often we have these ideals about how something should happen, but when that doesn’t come we wonder how that could possibly glorify God. But He can use anything, and anyone—we just have to be willing vessels for His use.
In many senses, this was a greatly encouraging story, and I’m thankful I had the chance to read it! It’s probably my top favorite from the past month!
I received a free copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest opinion of it.
This was a unique book, and a pleasant read. It was interesting to see two people do something really out of the ordinary, but also in a way that makes sense for them. Though, it was a bit frustrating to see how everyone seemed to see 1 Corinthians 7 as Paul's argument in favor of singleness being because of coming persecution, and not because singleness frees one to be more focused on God and ministry. Of course, marriage is necessary for some forms of ministry (like pastorship) and marriage can be helpful in ministry, but that doesn't change the fact that when one is married, that means one has to be focused on their spouse's needs and then the ministry.
Anyway, the book was sweet, thought-provoking, and hilarious. Can't wait to see Tait's story in the next book, since he kind of got suctioned out of the story the moment Eden arrived, poor bloke, and dragged himself over only for the best moments.
I enjoyed this story but I was confused about why exactly they got married. Their reason to get married was to glorify God? I came upon what felt like discrepancies in the story and time lines but overall it was a clean romance that I found hard to put down.
Leave it to Chautona Havig to take a perfectly ridiculous concept and work it into a story in a way that actually makes sense and teaches great lessons along the way!
Do I have your attention now? Because it isn’t really ridiculous. It’s just not done by Christians. The idea of entering a marriage with someone you only know on a casual basis, that you don’t love in “that” way and expect it to be honoring to God? Um, let me just say this is not mainstream.
While Bentley’s conclusion about marriage and the way she approached it may or may not match up with your understanding of what God intends, it is quite thought-provoking. Moreover, it can’t be denied that it is God’s will for those of us who are married to honor Him in our marriages. And every other area of our lives.
While I know it isn’t designed to be a primer on marriage, the things Bentley and her husband had to learn and the conflicts they had to resolve resulted in lessons that are valuable for all marriages. Because honestly, it doesn’t make a difference how the union comes about, God’s plan for marriage is for it to be a picture of Christ and His bride. So as this couple struggles through the process of becoming one, we, the readers, can benefit from their efforts.
Don’t be misled into thinking this is a super serious book. It is by Chautona Havig, after all! There is plenty of fun, swoony moments, and slightly quirky characters you’ll love to love.
In case you didn’t notice, I haven’t mentioned who Bentley proposed to. There were a number of choices. I also didn’t mention how many she proposed to. Or what the reactions were, of the men or of the friends and families. I’m just not sure if that would give anything away. I will tell you that the wedding was so funny and sweet and perfect! After all, what wedding do you really remember where everything came off without a hitch?
Was the story perfect? Not quite. But close enough I didn’t take away any from any of the stars. There was a reference to a deep, painful sin in her husband’s past that he wasn’t ready to share with her. I wanted to know what it was! And Bentley had this habit of saying things like “le sigh“. While it was revealed she was a fan of Pepe LePew, in my mind that didn’t quite explain it. Then again, I haven’t watched those cartoons since I was little. Would it have made more sense if I had? Perhaps? Fortunately, this was not overdone so I was okay with it.
Readers who enjoy stories that make them think, laugh, and swoon without making them blush will enjoy Blessing Bentley.
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
To be honest, the main reason I chose this book to review was because of the book cover. I love the colors, the format, I just love this over. But what I wasnt expecting is what the book is about. It’s very different from any book I’ve ever read. To choose someone to marry that you barely know, and marry because you want to glorify God is not the usually cost wedding. What will your family and friends think? And more importantly will the marriage last? Or will you get a few years into the marriage and hate each other so much you can’t stand to be around them? Author Chautona Havig tells her take on her new book, Blessing Bentley.
This is a really amazing story. While it is an off the wall concept for most people, for Christians, it can work. Bently wanted her marriage to glorify God so she went on a mission to find her new husband, they were married in an interesting and hilarious but yet perfect. Ms. Havig does an amazing job as she creates wonderful and quirky characters to fit her story. And they all develop so well as the story unfolds. And I have to say the marriage had plenty of its ups and downs like any marriage. It was fun and interesting to follow the couple on their journey through the struggles they had. And it’s a learning experience for those having these same struggles because it’s shows that couples can work through the difficult times as they trust the Lord to guide them. And that’s the read thing, trusting the Lord even in the hard times. And the main thing is commitment. No matter what, you trust God and commit to what He wants and your problems become easier. This is a wonderful book to read, serious and very funny as well.
A copy of this book was given to me by the author or publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions here in this review are totally mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Blessing Bentley is the first book of the Marriage of Conviction series. I would recommend reading them in order, as the main character of book two is introduced in this story.
What a unique storyline this book has!! Bentley is in Bible Study when one of the ladies raises the question of whether young professional women would choose marriage or possibly give up their careers for the sake of marriage. She said, "It just occurred to me that we weren't designed for singleness-not originally, anyway." Bentley can't get the thought out of her head and asks the lady why she was asking, if she had an agenda or something. This leads Bentley down a Biblical rabbit trail, studying everything the Scripture has to say about marriage.
Once Bentley decides she wants to get married, and with a lot of prayer, she goes and asks the lucky guy to marry her. You all, I was not prepared for who Bentley chose. They do get married, and even though they are not in love, they plan to glorify God with their marriage. The rest of the story is their story of learning to be married and what all that entails.
I really liked the story, and I was invested. I was rooting for the couple, and as the story played out, I was happy with Bentley's decision and could see where it made sense (can you tell how careful I am not to name name so I don't spoil anything, LOL?!). It was a sweet story, and I am ready to dive right into the second story.
Even in a more light-hearted novel from Chautona Havig, it's not fluffy. There is a take-you-by-surprise premise, plenty of laughs, and endearing character development, but there is much for the reader to learn as Bentley and Gary search the Scriptures and apply The Word to their lives. In this book, how God can be glorified in a Christian marriage is the topic, and it gives the reader something to think about.
I loved getting to know Bentley. She was organized and efficient, competent in her work, and motivated to spend the time and effort to dig into God's Word. She was very brave to take a leap of faith in obedience to what she learned. Gary was hardworking and thoughtful, and serious about living his life in a way that honored the Lord by loving others. That he sought wise counsel when presented with something bigger than him showed his wisdom, as well.
It is always a privilege to visit the community that Havig has created, to encounter old friends and meet new ones.
This is not a typical romance novel, but anyone who enjoys Christian women's fiction will certainly want to read this book. Fans of Havig's work will definitely appreciate this new offering.
I received an e-ARC of this book from the author, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
You wake up early and can’t fall back asleep so you start reading. You have a party to put on and things to do but you can’t put the book down…but you have to. All day you think about that book. As soon as the people leave and things are cleaned up, you are back to reading. You finish the entire book. In. one. Day.
Can you relate?
That was what Blessing Bentley did to me yesterday.
This book made me laugh, made me cry, but most of all it made me think. Bentley studied her Bible. She found something that made her think – something that challenged her to her core. She continued to dig, to study her Bible, to seek wise counsel. Then she stepped out in faith.
I was challenged.
Could I do what Bentley did? Really, do I study my Bible like Bentley did? Am I committed to looking at my beliefs through the lens of scripture?
Blessing Bentley has quickly moved to the “favorite of Chautona’s books” shelf. This is an important book we all need to read. It will challenge you and make you think. It will also make you smile, laugh, cry, and le sigh. What is a le sigh? Pick up Blessing Bentley and find out!
I give this book 5 stars.
I read this book through Kindle Unlimited. No compensation was given and all opinions are my own.
I am in love with this book! I read a digital copy of it, but this is one I would really like to have in print so I can share it with other people. There is so much truth in this book. I found it a very refreshing change from the typical romance book. Not every marriage is based on meeting someone and falling in love with him/her so that you can't bear to be apart. Some are actually based on conviction and choosing to love the one God has joined you to! Actually, I believe this is more Biblical than the falling in love model practiced today in Western culture—and maybe today's divorce rate confirms that? I wouldn't necessarily recommend a woman proposing to a man, as Bentley did, but I can see things working out, as they did in this real-sounding story, if both parties are submitted to God and wanting His will. I was excited when I read this book, too, because in it Chautona Havig has come back to writing the type of books that first made me fall in love with her—wonderfully interesting stories that have a lot of meat in them, that make me think.
This is not my usual book feel. The author just had this silly, fun way of writing I enjoyed. I love arraigned marriage story's and this one was unusual in it took a bit of time to get there and they were friends by the time they married. I missed the sexual tension that happens in these kinds of stories. This is squeaky clean. It had some really great marriage advice and life advice and the Christian element I found taught me instead of bored me. Happy I stumbled upon this one:}
This was an interesting concept and I thought that it played out well with the characters chosen. It is sweet and funny with enough roadblocks in the way to make it interesting. I am looking forward to see what the author does with the rest of the series. However this book is complete and sweet all on its own, even if more books in the series are never written.
What if single Christian men and women were to take the Bible literally, particularly when it comes to marriage?
This book is both fun and thought-provoking. A great read for married and singles alike. It just may challenge your views on what the Bible says about marriage!
And if you like Blessing Bentley<\i>, try Emma and the Reasons<\i> by Natasha Metzler, too!
Blessing Bentley is an interesting take on the institute of marriage set in the genre of fiction. I found many of the ideas thought provoking and the characters where hysterical at times. (Man-azon, that is all I will say.)
When Bentley makes her thoughts known and steps out in faith, she finds herself on a very interesting ride with a willing young man. There was no love, not in the way we would expect. Only a mutual desire to please God, with maybe a hint of necessity. As I read through the chapters, I began to think about my own marriage. We married for love but now live and work together to serve God. What would happen if we flipped it around when we first meet someone that we enjoy their company. I’m not entirely sure I could do that, but I cannot say I wouldn’t either.
Blessing Bentley was a joy to read. I laughed in quite a few places. I read the some sentences more than once in an effort to process exactly what the character was saying. Not in a bad way. More like taking in her thoughts to better understand. As you will read below, there are two more books coming in this series and I can’t wait to see what happens next as I know Chautona Havig has a wonderful way of weaving characters from other stories into whatever it is that she is working on.
Honestly, there isn’t a single book that this woman could put out, that I would not enjoy. I hope you will pick up a copy for yourself and will be as entertained as much as I was.
**I was provided a copy from Chautona Havig through CelebrateLit so that I may offer an honest opinion on this story.
My Thoughts on Blessing Bentley: I fell in love with Chautona Havig as an author when I read my first novel by her. It’s all been uphill since. Each book I read by her just leaves me wanting more. The characters are complex and unique. They seem to jump off the page and set up residence in my living room. Each one has a special way about them and I can’t figure out how she can keep them all straight when she’s writing!
So many of the characters and books take place in one small town called Fairbury. It’s funny because I actually know a town by that name that I’ve spent some time in. I love how they make cameo appearances in each other’s books and you get to learn tiny bits and pieces about their lives again. Makes it almost but not quite such a sad time when each series ends.
I really can’t describe the writing style. It’s something I’ve not come across before. Unique doesn’t even do it justice. Somehow no matter whether a character is a main one or a supporting one they draw me in and I’m involved. These are the best types of books! Somehow each character also makes you want to know all about them and I find myself hoping they each end up with a book or two of their own. Because I know they each have a story and I want to know their stories!
I’m invested now. These characters are my friends and I have to find out what happens and how their life ends up.
Blessing Bentley is the same way. I am intrigued by Bentley. One, her name. It sounds so manly. Not exactly a feminine name like Willow(another favorite character coming at you).
Why is that her name? Where is her family? Why is she living by herself? Who is Tait to her? Why would she propose? Who wants a marriage without love?
See. So many questions. And when I have questions I just keep reading. Because I can’t stop until I know all the answers. And then when the book ends and I still have questions I go in search of the next book in the series and might maybe make stink eyes at the author’s picture when it’s not immediately available.
You definitely want to read this book. But I don’t like romance? Is that you? Are you saying that in a whiny voice? Too bad. You will love this book even if you don’t like romance, even if you don’t consider Christian fiction or inspirational romance or whatever genre you want to classify this book. This book is a great one and this author is definitely worth a read or two or fifty.
Run to your Kindle account and get your copy now. I have to say this author is the sole reason I signed up for Kindle Unlimited through my Amazon account. Because so many of her books are on there for free with it and I can’t stop reading her books. Eventually, I’m going to run out and then I may start writing nice fan mail letters begging for more. Or hopefully, she’ll keep me supplied.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Oh my! Oh my! What a wonderful journey I just took with the talented author , Chautona Havig. Her books always entertain me, male me laugh, give me hope and fills me with scriptures. This story is going on my 2019 favorite books. If you have not read a book by this author, I insist you read all her books. Her characters are fun, sassy and so realistic they become your friends.
I'm not going into much details about the book because that is for you to experience. I will tell you that Bentley (I love that name) is one person I would want as a friend. She is serious in her walk with Jesus, studies her bible and wants to glorify God in everything she does. The plot of this story is quite different from anything I have ever read. Do I think Bentley has lost her marbles? Not at all. In fact she is a woman who wants to be married so her and her husband can glorify God . Maybe you haven't heard of that about marriage, so sit back and get ready for an adventure.
I loved, loved loved how the author takes us through scriptures about marriage and allows us to understand the thinking process of Bentley. Maybe it isn't proper, but Bentley doesn't hesitate to ask the man she believes God has for her to marry her. Well there are a few shall we say "things to work out." They don't really know each other, never been on a date together and never said "I love you to each other." Those are small details that Bentley feels will fall into place
This book is not a "how to get married" book, rather a book about one insight into what marriage means to them. Bentley is sure she knows what she is doing and I loved watching her and the man she wants as her husband try to decide if this was what they should do. There are funny moments in the book that is a fingerprint of the authors writing style. There is never a dull moment in the book and it really made me look at marriage from a different viewpoint.
I won't reveal the person she chooses but I will say that the author did catch me off guard a bit. Oh yes I had it all figured out who Bentley wanted, but in the authors style, she throws a curve ball and suddenly I'm swooning over Bentley's choice. Remember that this is a fiction book and the author is not saying this is the way to marry. What she has done is taken a topic and shown a different way to look at marriage still using scriptures while giving us much to think about. I can't say enough good things about this story without mentioning how creative the author is. I absolutely agree that there needs to be three books in this series. I eagerly await the next one and it can't come soon enough.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
For a good while now, I’ve been thinking over the phrase, “Love is a choice.” Blessing Bentley reminds me of this while going well beyond the initial reaction of choice. We are called to serve God in all things, and marriage is no different.
Bentley is adamant that divorce is not an option. Those words are easy to say, especially in the beginning when a couple is so wrapped up in love they can’t see beyond the stars in their eyes. But Bentley doesn’t have that love to blind her since she’s taken a different route by marrying to glorify God instead of for professed love. Marriage first, love later. Perhaps a confusing concept, but you’ll hopefully see the bright side of things after reading Blessing Bentley.
Chautona’s characters always surprise me with their strength, quirks, and their deep-rooted faith. She never fails to offer a great spiritual arc, even when both main characters start out already strong in their faith. The secondary characters are amazing too, and don’t get me started on her ability to weave series together by dropping breadcrumbs throughout each book.
Bentley and her husband (not naming names so you’ll have to find out for yourself) will have plenty of trials. Even when you marry for love you’ll face troubles. Take into consideration that this couple married to glorify God and naturally they’re going to get hit with major problems. Number one, they know little to nothing about each other. Talk about some awkward situations!
Long story short, while Bentley’s point of view is not considered normal, it’s not really about that, at least, not for me. Look at it this way. We are all called to serve God. Everything we do should be for His glory. So, that does include our marriages. Yes, even when you’ve been married for going on eighteen years (pointing at myself on that one).
I’m not saying you should follow Bentley’s example. I’m saying you can read Blessing Bentley and apply the principals to your life regardless of you marital status.
I love this town and the people. I’m looking forward to the next installment. Who’s next on the conviction train? Who do I recommend this book for: anyone…everyone.
I requested a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This is a contemporary Christian romance that glorifies God without needing to get out a magnifying glass to see if it does. It unapologetically gives glory to our maker throughout the entire book. Bravo! Author Havig is a modern day story teller extraordinaire. She takes words and weaves them into the most entertaining stories using her God given talent.
”Blessing Bentley” is my favorite one written by here. It is Book 1 in her new Marriage of Conviction Series. The author has done a thorough job researching scripture on marriage. She has compiled arguments on both sides of her debate. As I read this delightful novel, I found myself nodding my head and talking to the book, the characters, or perhaps Chautona, the author.
The characters are lovable. Some are predictable while others are complete surprises. The differences in ages allow for some humor and heartwarming moments. Bentley’s idea is good in theory but I can’t imagine doing it. However, television is filled with reality shows that are similar, just without the scripture.
So many life lessons are included in this book. Faith, family, forgiveness, friends, finances, trust, leaning on God, and praying. Communicating between a couple is essential and the shows that.
I loved this fiction offering by author Havig. I was invested in it within the first few pages and my attention stayed until “the end.” The conversations were witty, barbed, and humorous. The storyline had some twists and turns to keep it interesting. Characters were like old friends that I adored. My dishes piled up while I kept reading. It is that good!
I highly recommend this book. There were two things that I missed. Discussion Questions is the first. This book is perfect for a book club, maybe a newly engaged ladies’ group. Questions would be such an added bonus. So would recipe’s from the story. That’s becoming a common thing and I love getting to read about someone making and enjoying cookies or a casserole and then find the recipe in the book. Even without these, I still rate this 5 out of 5 stars.
A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but I was under no obligation to write a review. These are my own thoughts.
Chautona Havig has written a funny, unique Christian contemporary fiction book that takes this romantic novel in an unexpected direction. Can the concept of “first comes marriage, then comes love” work in the lives of two dedicated Christian young adults? What if two Christian singles decide to get married, even if they have not dated or know each other well, so their “lives will glorify God”?
Bentley has been studying the concept of marriage in the Bible, and has decided that this is how she can best glorify God. Not being in a romantic relationship, she carefully considers all of her single male Christian friends and decides to ask Gary, a guy she greatly respects, to marry her. Gary accepts her proposal, and from that point the story has both its humorous, and sometimes surprisingly touching, moments. Even though their pastor and friends have concerns about their concept of marriage, they join together to help Gary and Bentley celebrate and survive their new life together.
Bentley is impulsive, out-going, funny, caring, and dedicated to living her life, as best she is able, according to God’s commands in the Bible. Gary is a nice, responsible, dedicated believer and lives a quiet single life. But as Bentley and Gary decide their marriage is God’s will for them, things do not go exactly as they anticipated. Their marriage holds some surprises for both of them, and it’s fun as the reader to see their characters change and grow all through the book.
This is a good story. Bentley’s character is a sparkling one, and following her through the book made me smile. Gary makes a great husband who must learn to understand his wife, and Bentley learns that true love is quite different than what she had always imagined.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
"Blessing Bentley" by Chautona Havig is a cute story about what marriage is and why a person should marriage. Bentley is a person who consider everything she does with what does Jesus and The Bible say about this. This book is really different from anything I have read before, which I think is why I like it as well as I do and I can't wait to read the next two books in this series.
This book isn't how to get marry or even how to fall into love before getting married but more of how a person should get married so the two of them together can glorify God together.
As in all of this author's book, there are moments that makes this reader chuckle. I love how this author uses inspiration and humor in all her stories. I think this trait of her's makes reader think that her characters are more like us than just a fictional character in fantasy land.
Oh, did I mention that just when I thought I knew who would get married to Bentley, the author throws a twist and once again, I made the wrong assumption. I really like how Bentley got her engagement ring! I thought it was a cute idea! I know so might roll their eyes and say, this guy needs to do better than that, but I say the thought is what counts!
I love how the author shows that even in a marriage of this type and even in fictional marriages, there are arguments and things to work out.
This book is fiction, but like all good fiction books, the story told remains with the readers and makes them think "What if" things like that really happen just the way the story unfolded and makes us rethink our way of thinking about things and make us ponder if our way of thinking is the right way"!
I think "Blessing Bentley" is my favorite Chautona Having's book.
I received a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
Havig has done it again! Another beautifully written book, with quirky characters, and a conviction on our normal lives. When I saw the sign ups for this book I knew I needed to read it. After reading "Past Forward" I couldn't wait to read another one of her books. I was not disappointed.
This story follows Bentley as she is studying God's word and makes some discoveries concerning the bible and marriage. Finding that she is convicted to marry in order to bring glory to God, she enlists Gary. They then begin to go on this wild ride called life.
I really enjoyed this book. Havig has yet to let me down with her character and plot arcs. She develops her characters so poetically. There is always rhyme and reason to every scene. I never feel like she uses words for the sake of filling space. She is very intentional in her writing.
My only qualm with this book was their physical relationship. It is clear that Gary and Bentley are uncomfortable showing each other normal, day to day affection. Yet, it is clear that they were having a sexual relationship. I just don't think Bentley would have been comfortable doing that if she wasn't comfortable with kissing him every morning.
However, I do think that this book will change many peoples perspective on the point of marriage. I know so many people who say they are getting married because the person makes them so happy. But, feelings die. If more people were willing to look at marriage as a way to serve the lord, serve each other, and exemplify Christ's love for the church I think marriages would look a lot different.
Final Thoughts-I give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I think it was beautifully written and with such a creative story line. I wish Havig had justified their physical relationship a little more.
I had absolutely no preformed expectations when I agreed to review Blessing Bentley. Honestly I probably thought that with a cover that cute, the book had to be a good one. That might not be the most accurate way to choose a book but in this case my instincts were on the mark.
Blessing Bentley may be the most unique novel about the path to marriage that I have ever encountered. With a quirky, determined, and dedicated to the Lord heroine it was a given that there would be plenty of humorous moments and there were. Yet blended in with Bentley’s unusual ideas about marriage was an in-depth study of what the Bible has to say about marriage.
I may not agree with all the conclusions that Bentley reached and I probably wouldn’t advise young women to attempt to follow in her footsteps but she raised plenty of ideas that all married couples should consider, whether newlyweds or an old married couple like my husband and I who are quickly approaching fifty years together.
It was a lot of fun reading Blessing Bentley and I would definitely recommend it. I think it would be a wonderful book for young women who are beginning to think about their future marriage and what it should look like. Looking forward to the other books in this series. I hope the wait will not be too long!
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
Love stories have been told for ages. A reader might assume which direction the tale will go and who will fall in love. That is not true in this story because it is quite surprising. Blessing Bentley is a unique love story. Bentley is challenged in her thoughts of marriage by an older mentor. Although she was not dating at the time, she felt like God is calling her to marriage. She then tries to figure out how this will happen in her current situation. As a reader, you come along her journey as she discovers how obedience to God comes before her thoughts of love.
This book definitely makes you stop and think about your own thoughts of marriage during her study in the Bible as well as other conversations. It was very thought provoking as you see Bentley challenge modern ideas of marriage. The more I thought of it, the book reminded me of the story of Ruth in the Bible. Ruth listened to the advice of her mother in law to approach Boaz as God’s provision for them both. They entered their marriage as obedience to God and love came next.
I read the book very quickly because I was intrigued. Then before I knew it I was anxious to read how everything would end up. I even found myself sharing the book with others because it was not your typical story. The concept was unique which made it such a good read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.
Bentley Girard’s about to propose… to a guy she doesn’t even love. Not THAT way anyway. After studying everything the Bible has to say about marriage, she’s decided she wants in. Now. So who’s going to take her up on that offer? And just why did no one reminded her that those vows include that little word, “love.” Oops! With her Bible in her hip pocket, and a shiny new ring on her finger, Bentley navigates this new world of marriage with grace and… oh, who is she kidding? She flounders until she gets a sure footing and hangs on tight.
Readers will enjoy this whimsical story about a young woman looking into Biblical marriage. In a town that has slim pickings for Christian bachelors what is Bently to do?
Chautona Havig has created a series and characters that her readers will certainly enjoy. Situated in a small town where everyone knows everyone and finding true love can be difficult, but Bently sets out to find what marriage is all about. Will it be her best friend Tait or someone else? Fans of Chautona Havig will enjoy her humor as they follow Bently and the gang through this series that relates to finding true love.
A truly enjoyable, lighthearted book that takes the readers through the lives of singles in the town of Fairbury. A wonderful fun read for everyone.
What I think you should know: Blessing Bentley is not your typical romance, first comes love, then comes…. Instead Bentley feels led to marry a Chistian man who she can work with to Glorify God even if she is not in love with him. Chautona Havig has once again written a book in her fictionalized Rockland and surrounding suburbs, Bentley is a character that I don’t really remember “meeting”, but she hooks me quickly with her story.
What you might want to know: Bentley has decided to marry, now she just has to find the husband. I don’t know how I would go about locating a husband if I wasn’t looking for love. This is like an arranged marriage only there is no one to arrange it for you. This makes for a very fun story!
What touched me about this book: Bentley soon discovers that getting married isn’t the hardest part. After she is married, she realizes that she has to work at making the marriage successful. The man that she married is gem, I truly enjoyed his character and how both of them are willing to step out on faith. My only complaint is that I have to wait until 2020 for the next part of the series.
Who will love this book ( just to name a few) Fans looking for a prolific new author Fans of Christian Fiction Fans of Christian Romance
I received a complimentary copy for this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Chautona Havig’s latest book, Blessing Bentley, is truly a blessing in so many ways.
Havig begins with an unusual, albeit Biblical, concept of marriage and continues from there. Of course, the idea is not for everyone, as she explains. However, after reading the story, I believe anyone contemplating a Godly and God-glorifying marriage should read Blessing Bentley.
Havig has a way of combining humor and truth in such a way as to leave you laughing even as you contemplate what she says. In this way, she’s better able to get her point(s) across, too, without you feeling as if you’re being beat over the head with Bible verses and hyperbole.
I’ll not recap the story; I’m only going to say you really should read it if you like unconventional Christian love stories, adorably quirky characters and depth to the plot.
I enjoy Chautona’s sense of humor so much and appreciate her commitment to God. I have read several of her books and follow her on social media, which has helped me to get to know her some. Her humor never ceases to amaze me.
I received Blessing Bentley from Celebrate Lit. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.
I’ve read many books written by Chautona Havig, so I knew what to expect when I started reading this book. Her books are always clean reads and so very thought-provoking. The concept of this story is really interesting. While I was reading it I thought of my two single daughters and tried to picture them approaching marriage this way. I’m not sure they would ever do it, yet, I’m not sure I would be opposed if they did. Because if they were truly walking in God’s direction with their life and the young man was too, I could see it happening. What I really loved about this story is that both Bentley AND Gray learned what love languages are. Their relationship was so precious and yet quirky and fun. Chuatona Havig has done it again and started a sweet series with wonderful characters who are believable, fun, very interesting, and never boring. Chautona Havig always knows how to create clean reads with wonderful characters and settings. I look forward to reading more stories involving some of the characters in this book! Now I think I might look up the next book and start reading more about this community. I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
What if instead of marrying because of passion, people decided to marry strictly for the purpose of doing the most for God’s Kingdom? When Bentley begins a Biblical study of marriage, she winds up proposing to someone. Even more surprising is he winds up accepting. Add in the chaos of Bentley losing her job and buying a house at the same time and a wonderful ride of a story begins.
Bentley and her husband learn the importance of communication and also about putting God first in everything in their marriage. I only have one giant, supersized complaint about this book – and that is the fact it is part of a trilogy and the other two books are not out yet. I found myself unable to put this book down. Chautona Havig has a way of taking unusual storylines and turning them into stories that are too good to put down without finishing. I can not wait to read the rest of the series.
So check this book out for yourself.
I received a copy of this book for my fair and honest review, and I honestly loved it.
You guessed it ... another masterpiece by Chautona Havig. Quirky, yet relatable protagonists, a healthy dose of Scriptural truth, a slow blossoming and heartfelt romance, and a totally outside the box way of thinking join seamlessly in Blessing Bentley. I'm thankful that the author makes it clear at the end of this book that this way of finding your for life spouse isn't necessarily the right way, because it was certainly unconventional, but the point of the book is that relationships need to have a marriage purpose behind them, and I totally agree! I found the story humorous especially with our heroine and her funny inner monologue. Twists and turns make for a perfect contemporary romance. I laughed and smiled, and just felt really happy and inspired by the end. If you are looking for Christian fiction excellence with a definite unique style, look no further than Blessing Bentley.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and all opinions given are entirely my own.
Bentley has decided to get married. Now, to find the right man. Then what is this thing she's getting into? What's love got to do with it? I mean, she doesn't even want to kiss him, but they are wed, which causes other complications. It was an isnta-wedding without insta-love. Like many women I use to know, Bently is only marrying because it's the "right thing to do" and she wants to make God happy with her. A few interesting things were brought up during discussions. Bentley tends to monologue to the point of distraction while trying to show points. I would definaly not advise anyone to get married like she did. I've seen it end in disasters over and over, but this book had a reasonably happy ending. Bentley was cute overall, and the Christian focus in this book stayed reasonable. I may read the rest of the series. This is one of Havig's best books so far.
My copy came from Celebrate Lit. This review is my opinion, left freely.
