This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review by the author and NetGalley.

So to begin with this was a very entertaining read!
I was hooked from the first few chapters and I really liked the world setting. Power plays, intrigue, magic, corruption..
And a Princess at the center of it all playing Robin Hood trying to help her people. Alecia was a very interesting character. She had a good mind on her head- when Vard wasn't around, because then things always went awry...- and a good heart, but she refuses to see that her father isn't the man she thought he was.

Captain Vard, even though he was not my favorite male lead ever, he had his moments. Vard was sent to the Castle to assassinate the Prince, but he got caught up into the palace's affairs and find himself guarding the princess. Now he is in an ideal position to finish what he came to do, but he can't help wandering who would benefit from it the most and was the man that requested this assassination. So now he has a choice to make and he has to be prepared to live with the consequences.

Hetty was a pleasure to watch! I could just imagine her, an old woman looking sternly down at the Captain of the Palace Guard who could arrest her and order her execution and she still puts him in his place without a second thought! :D Just the image of her chuckling in front of her fireplace makes me smile!

Finally, I know they say don't judge a book by its cover, but isn't this one gorgeous? Honestly it was the main reason it caught my eye and I'm glad it did.

A big Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the chance to review this book!

Alecia is a princess of her land, but she is distraught over what is happening in her kingdom. Alecia blames her father’s advisor Finus for the evil that her father’s mercenaries are reeking on the local inhabitants. Alecia is determined to avenge her first loves death, he was killed during a “tax collection” by a group of mercenaries.

Captain Vard Anton is a beautifully striking man with a secret that could destroy him. He is placed as Alecia’s protector. There is an instant chemistry that develops between them, but their union can never be. She is a princess and he a guard.

The story was intriguing, the premise wonderfully original but the romantic tension and aspect was a little off keeping me away from any type of emotional connection to the characters. In the end, this was a intriguing, interesting and enjoyable read. 3 Stars.

What a fantastic book! And with delicious characters!

Princess Alecia, with her flaxen hair and lithe body, an athletic warrior-princess with a mission. Captain Anton Vard, the handsome and tenacious guard with a carefully crafted secret and flaws.

Then we have Hetty the witch.

Such a fantastic first chapter that hooked me before grabbing me and whisking me through a brilliant adventure.

The characters interacted well, and this was crafted masterfully. Conflicts and tension wound their way through with intricacy to match the tapestry of Isabel (spoilers!)

It’s worth reading this book. I mean it.

Most people expect some romance in most novels as this gives the MC a fantastic growth arc, and in fantasy, you want that feeling of escaping this world and dive into without any hesitation. Princess Avenger has this in spades, the balance of loss and love was an incredible feeling, as was Ms Rowley's talent.

I look forward reading more of Ms Rowley's marvellous writing! Highly recommend it!

A beautiful written romance with a vigilante princess heroine and a hero who was so vividly handsome that my own heart was fluttering. Princess Avenger was a fast paced story with a selection of interesting characters. I loved Hetty the witch and the bear. There were picturesque settings, exquisite dresses, swords running through guts, and to top it off a sexual tension that never lost its intensity.

Princess Avenger is an action packed adventure that sets the tone early and doesn't let up. Terrific world building and great use of language. Well written and nicely paced. A good blend of romance and fantasy that should appeal to true fans of either or both genres.

I had really high hopes for Princess Avenger by Bernadette Rowley. I may haven't read any reviews about this book prior to me picking it up but still, from the premise I was certain that I had an amazing story in my hands. And although in some departments, Princess Avenger delivered what the premise promised, in others, it didn't fair so well I'm afraid.

For the first 1/3 of the story, Princess Avenger was everything I was expecting it to be. There was an intricate world building, a strong and independent heroine and a very mysterious and sexy hero. I mean, everything at the beginning was indicating a fresh and unique story, having all those elements I'm searching for. But before I even reached the middle of the story, my initial thoughts about Princess Avenger started to change rapidly. I found myself tired and a little bit bored, so I had to put it down, read another book and then continue with it. I don't usually do this. When I start a book I either put it aside or finish it. I rarely pick up again a book that I stopped reading. But I had to give it another try because like I said, at the beginning I really liked it. And my three star rating reflects mostly that part and the fact that even if I couldn't connect with the story, Bernadette Rowley's writing style is pretty good.

My main problem with the book was with the world building. It was rather ambitious, but Princess Avenger never delivered in that area. It's mostly a fantasy novel with a focus on romance and let's face it, the beginning and end of a fantasy novel is the world building. At least for me. But unfortunately in this story the world building is loose and vague. Details are never given about how exactly the world ticks or what is going on. The whole plot is based on the fact that the reader takes everything described as given and never asks any why's or how's. And that is a major failure for me. Maybe the fact that Princess Avenger wasn't really that long a book, explains why the world building was a little bit vague. But still, I just can't take everything for granted.

The other problem is that Princess Avenger is primarily a romance and then a fantasy novel. And I have nothing against that, if and only if, the romantic plot isn't explored against the basic plot of the whole story. And sadly, that was the case with Princess Avenger. After a point, everything was focused on the romance between Alecia and Vard and everything other was lost. Never explored. The whole book was about them and all the other interesting things happening at the same time where just completely brushed off. There wasn't a balance. And still, if the romance was good, I may still not be having that many problems, but their romance was also sort of lukewarm. Maybe because both Alecia and Vard (especially Vard) felt so distant. As for the rest of the characters, they might as well haven't been there. There was no character development or there was, but a minimum one.

All in all, Princess Avenger was a rather ambitious attempt that I'm pretty certain that it could have been so much better. There was potential in there. But unfortunately, it failed to impress me and catch my interest.

My bookstagram: emm_enchanted

A good start to the series.

Princess Alecia disguises herself as a man to avenge the death of someone she loved. Meanwhile Vard, a shapeshifter, struggles to complete his mission of killing the Prince and controlling his inner beast. When he is assigned as Alecia's protector, he battles with his feelings for her, while Alecia fears exposure of her secret. Complications arise in many forms which become a threat to their existence.

The beginning was interesting and I was eager to see how things would turn out. The characters were well written and I had high expectations from Alecia after reading the description and the first chapter, but after a point I was a bit disappointed in her. She spent most of her time lusting after Vard and throwing herself at him while he kept rejecting her. I wish she had more self control. I wanted to see more of her fighting and trying to make things right, but that was a small part of the story.
Not to mention that she had resigned herself to her fate and wanted to die. In my opinion, she could have fought harder. I also got annoyed when she wanted to help the dying Finus, when just minutes ago he had practically raped her. I was hoping she'd castrate him.
She is also blind towards her father's cruelty, but I won't completely blame her for it because I probably would have been the same if I was in her place.
She did improve towards the end though and I hope to see more development in the coming books.
In Vard's case, the jury is still out. He spent most of the time trying decipher his feelings or protecting Alecia in this book, but I haven't found him swoon worthy yet.
My favourite is Hetty, she's sassy.

One of the most important things that I liked about the book is the issues it highlighted, which were prevalent in the olden days and happen even today.
The lecherous old man treating a woman old enough to be his granddaughter as property and forcing himself on her; another man deludes himself that the woman is in love with him, even when she clearly tells him she is not and acts in ways that jeopardizes her safety. Then there is the father who treats the daughter as a means to an end. This is something we see even today and I loved how the MC decided to take charge of her own life in the end. The author did a marvellous job with it.

The romance and steamy scenes were good but I wanted more. I liked the way it ended and I hope Vard and Alecia can together make a difference in the kingdom. I did like the story and it has great potential so I want to see how things progress. I'd also like to see the villains burn to cinder.
I'd recommend it to all who enjoy romantic fantasy genre.
I'm also thankful to the author for gifting me this ebook.

What a delightful find! Bernadette Rowley shares a beautiful story with us, full of fantasy, magic, power, corruption.. and the one princess that is determined to save her world.

Princess Alecia is determined to stop the prince from destroying her country. An insidious evil has slithered into the palace and no one in power seems to care. The Prince, once a good and decent man is determined to destroy all that dare oppose him (you know by wanting to feed their children before him). Alecia, refuses to see the evil that has corrupted him and blames his advisers for all that is happening. But even so, she battles as best as she can. Righting any wrong she can.. but even she is controlled by revenge rather than justice and has to find her way past the revenge and learn to serve the people rather than herself.

There is more to Army Captain Vard Anton than he lets on. He is of a mysterious race that was born to protect the innocent. How he does that is up to interpretation, his. Because of this quirk, he is allowed to take a job that involves assassinating the Prince.. only to get caught up in office politics and finds himself the personal guard to the princess. Suddenly he is struggling with his decisions and trying to figure out how to serve both the princess and his job..

Watching these two struggle their way through castle politics and search for each other was indeed magic. Ms Rowley shares a special world with us and I can only hope for more. While the book reads well as a stand alone Ms Rowley does an excellent job of leaving us wanting more. I only hope her publishers agree with me and we see the next book soon.

If you can get your hands on this book.. read it!! It is a great find!

Since the murder of her first love, Princess Alecia has been going out at night and killing the murderers. Which, is how she runs into Captain Anton. He's out patrolling when he sees a fight break out and is ready to bring the young boy who is causing all the trouble in for questioning when the lad escapes. He has no idea that the boy from the other night is the same as the Princess who he has now been tasked to protect from the person who's going around murdering men.

I liked the characters in this story and loved that we got point of views from both Captain Anton and Alecia. You could see the troubles that they both face personally that the other is unaware of. I like the spin that the author took on Anton's abilities but we are not really brought up to speed with Alecia's. There is hints that she might have premonitions but it isn't confirmed.

I'm not sure if this story is going to be part of a series or not. There were a lot of loose stings at the end that makes me think that there will be another story.

Favorite part...
Captain Anton is a big man. So I found it pretty comical when he disguises himself as a maid. At first Alecia isn't quite sure what to think of this large woman in a gown which is way too small for her but then it is revealed as the Captain. For some reason, I just couldn't picture him in a maids clothing.

I received this book free through Voracious Readers for an honest review. I did enjoy the book but for me it didn't live up to the promise with a few things. It started well but went astray. Princess Alecia Zialni fighting against injustice in disguise and being rescued by a stranger who she later meets as Captain Vard Anton. Vard is given the job of protector to Alecia by her father, he isn't an ordinary man and Alecia is drawn to him. What annoyed me is that Alecia was in disguise when they first met but he was drawn to her unusual eyes and a distinctive smell, when he meets her as the princess and throughout the book until he realises who she is he doesn't recognise her. He's portrayed as intelligent with a keen sense of smell but even when he looks right at her as the princess he doesn't notice the eyes, seriously??? Also I thought the ending was a let down, Alecia can't see that her father isn't the good guy she wants him to be, I know we all like to think the best of our parents but when he's constantly treating her badly she's still got the blinkers on. All in all, it was a nice book if you read it for what it was and didn't need it to make a lot of sense.

Rowley’s use of language allows the story to gently caress the reader’s imagination rather than dragging it through the storyline. This is most prevalent during the story’s mature sections. Contrastly, the depth of detail which Rowley uses to describe the scenes throughout the novel thoroughly exceptional. Additionally, the author does an exceptional job ensuring the reader totally understands the thoughts of the pair, especially Princess Alecia.

This novel fulfils the fantasy/romance criteria perfectly because it is more fantasy than romance. Therefore, fans of the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones phenomena should enjoy this book. However, I am in no way suggesting this is a novel for teenagers due to its mature content. Additionally, readers who are looking for an introduction to romantic novels before or instead of the clichéd Mills &Boon collection or Jane Eyre; Princess Avenger is for you.

Author Bernadette Rowley has created a wonderful mix of period piece romance with fantasy using witches, animal shifters, jealousy, court conspiracies and tantalizing characters. Rowleys writing is fun to get lost in and her characters varied and entertaining. A princess out to avenge the death of a friend and a captain hired to protect her create some sexy sparks. If you like a slow burn romance, court intrigue and shapeshifter magic you are going to enjoy Rowley's book Princess Avenger.

Amendment: I just finished listening to the audio book of Princess Avenger read by the author. What a delight. Very well done and of course having written it all the intonations are perfect. If you enjoy audio books this is a real treat.

It's so nice, in this time of political turmoil and busy, busy, busy, to just retreat into a story that asks absolutely nothing of you. Bernadette Rowley's stories are a gift because they just take you away to a far off land where you get to watch what is basically a movie in book form. Alecia and Vard are nice characters, with Zialni and Finus fulfilling their roles well and Hetty, too. For fans of romantic fantasy, or those just needing a break from this presently insane reality, it's worth your time. The characters are good, the action is good, the plot is well-balanced and the finishing is good. An enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book. Rowley's fantasy world pulled me in straight away and her princess, who was skilled and determined but also in way over her head, was both believable and likeable. The shape-shifting hero was gorgeous and the bad guys satisfyingly difficult. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because I didn't want it to end when it did. I'm sure there's more to this story and I'll be happy to read it when it comes out!

This book fell in the middle for me. I think there is a lot of promise here, but in the end there was a lot that didn't work for me.

First, I think the idea and story are pretty good...a tyrant king, a rebellious princess, a mysterious captain...there is a lot to like. I think the writer does a good job at spinning the story overall, too. And the mix of characters is a good combination that has a lot of potential to really develop the story.

I struggled with the world building. I feel like there should be some back story about the world the book is set in as well as some laying out the magical/supernatural elements. There were some terms used, like changeling, that seemed to have a different meaning from the norm.

I didn't really like the princess or any of the characters, to be honest. In the end, I wasn't invested in what happened to them. I'm not sure where I missed the connection since there is such an interesting mix of characters, but they all felt flat and in some cases, stereotypical.

I think the plot was a little forced and it didn't really go very far. This is the first in a series, so I get that it's laying foundation, but again, that foundation is missing a lot because there isn't a lot about the world the book is set in. Also,

I always recommend trying a story for yourself because everyone is different, and as I said above, there is a lot of promise in this book.

The Princess Avenger by Bernadette Rowley is an entertaining, easy to read romance with an unusual leading man. Captain Anton Vard is sent to Brightcastle on a mission, and is assigned to personally protect Princess Alecia. The chemistry between the pair explodes, but both of them have secrets . Alecia's discovery of Vard's darker side, an attempt on Vard's life and her forced betrothal force the couple apart. However, there is no reason to despair: this is a happily ever after romance.

The world of Brightcastle is vividly portrayed, and most of the characters are rounded and believable. Brightcastle is a man's world, with manly pursuits considered of the utmost importance, which lends credibility to the Princess's 'damsel in distress' moments. A standout supporting character is Hetty the witch, Alecia's friend and helper. She is strong, plain-speaking and good fun for the reader. Alecia's father is not so powerfully drawn, considering the important part he plays in Alecia's fate, nonetheless, he is certainly believable. My only quibble, and it is minor, is with Vard's inability to recognise that he has already met the Princess before he is assigned to her personal security. It seems impossible that a man of such heightened senses would fail to recognise her as soon he really looked into her eyes. This is a small flaw in a narrative that is, overall, truly enjoyable and invites a sequel. After all, there is still much to learn. For example can Alecia help Vard contain his darker self? Will the pair return to Brightcastle to save the people from her father? Thankfully the second book, Princess in Exile is available.

This story pulls you in right away, beginning with a scene where the princess is fleeing in a poor disguise after she has been injured. We soon learn more about her and her circumstances. I thought the author described things well, allowing you to feel you could see the scenes without it being overly descriptive. I thought, though, that some of her word choices weren't appropriate, so it pulled me a little from the narrative flow as I was trying to determine why a particular word was being used and what the author was actually going for with it. The couple at the core of the story was fascinating to watch as their relationship grew and shifted and as they went up against those opposed to them. The book had some issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage, but I didn't feel overly distracted by them. All in all, this is an enjoyable fantasy romance that will keep you turning the pages, especially the closer you get to the end.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

“There always was a choice if you were willing to sacrifice everything.”

This was a watered down epic fantasy. The characters were good and the story line was interesting, but everything moved way too fast and that made the emotions and situations seem less than they were. Despite the interesting character development of Vard and the mystery behind the Prince, the story was somewhat predictable, which hindered the overall plot. It was entertaining enough for me to want to finish the book, but I’m not sure I’ll finish reading the series. There were too many exclamations of dramatic monologue, which made the writing seem immature. I liked Alecia. I think she was strong and I appreciated her tenacity, but she was also very naive and immature. I was surprised to be reminded that she was 24 and not the 16 or 17 that she acted. I am very intrigued by Vard and he would be the only reason I keep reading the series. There’s so many places that this plot can go. I hope it goes somewhere good.

I received a free e-copy of the book from Bernadette Rowley. I was not monetarily compensated for this review and all opinions are my own.

I love fantasy romance books and when I saw this one I was intrigued. This book follows a young Princess Alecia who is unhappy with how her father is ruling the kingdom. She is also masquerading as a young boy seeking revenge for the loss of her first love at the hands of mercenaries. Enter a very attractive Captain Vard who is her personal guard and you have one hell of a story. There is murder, suspense, adventure, romance and magic all in the story! I love how the author puts them all together. This is so far an 8 book saga and book one does end up in a mild cliffhanger. There are also a few scenes of unwanted sexual attention. Just a warning in case this might bother anyone. I loved the story and can't wait to read book 2. I give this book 4.5 stars because at times I did find Alecia a bit much.
