D.I. Kim Stone #5

Linea di sangue

Rate this book

While there is nothing I can say regarding this series that hasn’t already been said, I hope to convey the wonder and awe I’m in regarding the Kim Stone series. Somehow Angie consistently tops each book with the next (although as readers we never can imagine that happening until we reach the next book), and our love of this close knit team grows with each story read. It’s rare to find an author with such talent to draw you in to her world and make you feel a part of it so completely, but that’s just what she does with these books. Her flawed characters are deep, complex, and emotional; she manages to find our most vulnerable fears and fleshes them out in her books, forcing us to face them head on. While the series is notoriously violent and graphic, Marsons manages to portray it in the most delicate and respectful of ways. None of the graphic material is sheerly for shock value; there is always a proper place for the how and why it happens to further the story and tie us to the characters emotionally.

My initial reaction to this installment was respect for the depth of emotion involving Kim and her history. I was squealing with delight when Angie brought back our favorite villain; the monster created in Dr. Alexandra Thorne is so thoroughly genius I would be pleased to see her pop in and out of the series to it’s completion. Her character somewhat reminds me of Gretchen Lowell in Chelsea Cain’s Heartsick series; a beautiful woman who remained under the radar for so long but eventually was outed due to the total lack of emotion and conscience. While there was a case the team was working on throughout the book, Kim and Alex go head to head in a battle of dangerous control that added variety and life to the series. I thoroughly love how we get to know each character in Kim’s team a little more with each book and was really thrilled to have had a deeper insight into Kim’s mother. I was left with a few questions that I’m interested in seeing answered possibly in the next book.

On a more personal note, I think one of the reasons this series has become so successful is due to Angie herself. She has made a point to connect with her readers by going beyond typical social media interaction, as have most authors in the Bookouture sphere. I can’t tell you just how many personal conversations we’ve had, or how many times she has shot me an email just to check and see how myself and my family are doing. That heart of gold, mixed with talent galore, has ensured the success of a series that will continue longer than many authors can dream of. I’m so incredibly ecstatic to see such an honorable person getting the recognition she deserves, along with her partner Julie, who plays an integral role in the publishing of these novels as well. Thank you ladies for all you do, and if you have been holding off on the series but “keep meaning to read them”, jump on the Kim train and join in the fun! I promise, this is one series you won’t regret reading if you enjoy thrillers of a darker nature.

*As always, many thanks to the author and Bookouture for spoiling us rotten with review copies of the highest standard. It’s been my pleasure to provide an honest review!

We are at the fifth in the DI Kim Stone series and it is an intense, compelling thrill ride that never lets you go until you read the last page. It seems to me that Angela Marsons is unstoppable and the quality of writing and plotting keeps on improving on this stellar series. We have the return of the deranged and dangerous psychiatrist Dr Alexandra Thorne who almost proved to be Kim's downfall. Kim and her team are trying to get to the bottom of several murders that include the Head of Social Services, Deanna Brightman, found in her car with a stab wound, and a young drug addict with an identical wound.

The evil Alexandra is still incarcerated in Drake Hall Prison, but this does not stop her ability to spread her noxious tentacles beyond the prison walls. She has every intention of being acquitted of her crimes on appeal, there is just the small matter of dealing with the obstacles. She has Kim firmly in her sights, and she plans to use Kim's mother to get to Kim. In the meantime, Kim is being watched and there is a killer on the loose. Kim is forced to come face to face with her troubled past. She and the team encounter a web of lies, deceit, danger whilst struggling to put the pieces of the investigation together. There are surprising twists that come one after another right up to the super twisted ending. Kim is to be tested to her limits at every level.

It is the brilliant and complex characterisation that drive this series. It is intelligently plotted and brimming with tension and suspense. The close knit police team is well established and working well. At the centre of it all is Kim, with her acerbic wit, complicated personal history and the driving force behind the investigations. She has to go close to the edge in her dealings with Dr Alexandra Thorne, a worthy villainous adversary for her. I highly recommend this entertaining and engaging novel. Cannot wait for the next one. Thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

Thank you to Ms. Angela Marsons, Bookouture, and Net Galley for providing me with an advanced copy of Blood Lines in exchange for an unbiased review.

What a gift this novel was to me, and not because it was a Net Galley read. I was in real need of a 5-star story after going through two deaths in the family (my father and my father-in-law) last month. This is the book I picked as I knew Ms. Marsons would give me what I needed. And she did.

Blood Lines is book 5 in the DI Kim Stone series, and just like the previous 4 books, it is an outstanding read. My personal record for being ensnared was smashed and will never be beaten as it only took the first 3 words of the prologue to grip me: “Doctor Alexandra Thorne.” Wow! That got my attention. Dr. Thorne is a most fascinating character who barged into Kim’s life like an atomic bomb in Evil Games (book 2). What a hell of a villain she is! Kim barely survived her first experience with Dr. Thorne. Will she fall to the doctor’s wiles again? Kim is a smart woman. A very smart woman. She knows she must not re-engage with Dr. Thorne or else risk falling irreversibly into the abyss. But even Kim Stone, the most formidable foe Dr. Thorne has ever encountered, has her foibles, which gives the psychotic psychiatrist another shot at her. Shudder...

This chapter in Kim’s life covers a lot. The team of Kim, Bryant, Stacey, and Dawson, that feels like family to me now, is involved in trying to solve several murders where the victims appear to have nothing in common. This is a well written, very clever plot, which blindsided me at the end. As usual with a Marsons book, the story moves along at a great pace with zero filler. We are treated to ingenious subplots and shocking surprises. The short snappy chapters are, as always, a definite plus.

At the heart of the book, in my opinion, is the characterization. We again delve deeper into Kim’s past and its relationship to who she is. This is delicious stuff. As conflicted and as lacking in social graces as she is, she has a burning desire to do the right thing and to reach out to help those in serious need no matter how those actions may affect her. I feel pretty emotional about this protagonist. I love her. We also get more insight into Dawson and what he’s feeling about his role on the team. Still waiting though for Ms. Marsons to give us more on Stacey—come on Angie, we need to know what she is all about.

I have to give Ms. Marsons another shout out on her mastery of the mind. I continue to be blown away by her knowledge of psychiatry. The way Dr. Thorne can bend a mind is every bit as frightening (actually more so as the victim has to try to live with the results) as the knife-wielding talents of a serial killer.

Ms. Marsons has a 16-book Kim Stone deal with Bookouture. I am hoping that by the last chapter of book 16 Kim realizes that the horrific loss of her twin brother has been a driving force in her actions to save so many others. At the end of all this, Kim deserves some peace. In the meantime, bring it on, Ms. Marsons! I’m dying to see what else Kim can accomplish.

The Kim Stone series is simply a must read for every thriller/crime fiction fan. Though every plot is a standalone, Kim’s story will go underappreciated if the series is not read in order. Book 1 (Silent Scream) remains nearly a giveaway at 99 cents in the United States, which makes it easy to give these books a try. And why not? No reason. No reason at all.

Copy furnished by Net Galley for the price of a review.

A sociopathic psychiatrist and master manipulator spins her evil web from inside the walls of prison, using the powers of her previous profession to toy with her fellow inmates. She has an end game in mind and is quite willing, even eager, to ruin anyone who gets in her way. This woman is poison, and her agenda is vile.

DI Kim Stone is back with her acerbic asides and musings, still growling and snarling at her fellowman. She, along with her regular crew, are working three separate murders - a man, a woman, and a child. The only common denominator is a neat one inch stab wound - the kill shot, as it were.

Angela Marsons continues to tease the tangles from the knot that makes up Kim Stone's psyche. If you haven't tried this series yet, you are missing out on a real treat. Fascinating characters, great pacing, smart stories. And serial killers! What's not to like?

This is the 5th book in the DI Kim Stone series by the excellent rising author Angela Marsons. I have read every book author Angela Marsons has written and she never lets me down, this was yet another excellent thriller.
In this novel a victim is killed with a stab to the heart that at first appears to be a robbery gone wrong. But when a second victim is found murdered Detective Kim Stone knows that they are dealing with the same killer. The second victim, a local drug dealer is found with an identical wound, there is nothing to link the victims except the nature of their death.
There are also plenty of thrilling sub plots that threaten to derail Kim's investigations and lots of surprises along the way, making this latest novel an excellent read that will keep you riveted to the very end.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

BLOOD LINES by one of my favourite authors, Angela Marsons, is the fifth book in the Detective Kim Stone series and it continues picking up on some themes from the previous novels. It is an excellent police procedural thriller, and after having read all her previous novels, I feel that this one was her best yet ever! The journey is allowing the reader to get close and personal to the characters, especially Kim. Kim has grown so much, and in this novel we see her character more flushed out…her strengths…her faults, but more important how she deals with the curve balls life throws her way.

First of all I would recommend reading all the earlier books in sequence to fully understand the story.

The story covers two plots; a serial killer investigation and the return of sociopath psychiatrist Alexandra Thorne fight against D.I. Kim Stone conducted from prison.

“A victim killed with a single, precise stab to the heart appears at first glance to be a robbery gone wrong. A caring, upstanding social worker lost to a senseless act of violence. But for Detective Kim Stone, something doesn’t add up. “

“When a local drug addict is found murdered with an identical wound, Kim knows instinctively that she is dealing with the same killer. But with nothing to link the two victims except the cold, calculated nature of their death, this could be her most difficult case yet. “

In Book 2, “Evil Games”, Kim is up against a sociopath, a manipulator who seems to know her every weakness, each move she makes could be deadly. Now in Blood Lines, Kim’s nemesis is out for revenge! The story between Kim and Alex is not over, and in this story we see the power of a true sociopath operating from prison. Alex is obsessed with Kim.

“Desperate to catch the twisted individual, Kim’s focus on the case is threatened when she receives a chilling letter from Dr. Alex Thorne, the sociopath who Kim put behind bars. And this time, Alex is determined to hit where it hurts most, bringing Kim face-to-face with the woman responsible for the death of Kim’s little brother – her own mother.”

These two threads of the story are skillfully linked by the victim’s relationships to their parents and Kim's relationship to her mother. Kim’s mother is in a psychiatric hospital for child abuse and the murder of Kim's brother. The interaction between parents and their children becomes an important theme in this story. The choice of title of this novel is nothing but brilliant!

It was so great to be back with the “gang”, Kim’s team, and I found the characters more flushed out than before. I also found that the author seamlessly ran multiple threads, that all come together at the end. I did not predict the ending, which was a plus for me.

I loved this book and did not want it to end. I cannot wait for the next installment. I would read anything this author writes…because she is that good! Don’t miss out, read all the books in the series, and follow Kim’s journey.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I just love this series and this book is the fifth book in this series. I was left speechless after reading it. It was so good and felt that this one is the best one. The books get better and better and the characters become more developed. This series needs to be read in order to get the full experience.

---At the beginning you have two victims that are stabbed in the same way. How are the victims related, and who is behind it? It took awhile for this to be solved since there wasn't any trace on who did it.

--- Guess who is baaaack? Yes, the evil Dr. Alex is back and she just gets more and more evil. She just doesn't stop and it starts with her writing a letter to Kim. She does not leave Kim alone.

---Kim's Mom revisits in this one and wants a parole hearing. We also get more info on Kim's and her twin Mikey's past.

---Evil Alex controls others to get what she wants and just won't stop.

---Evil Alex is trying to get out of prison and is trying to kill those who have put her there. Will Kim and her mother lives be at risk?

---Kim also has a stalker that watches Kim.

---As the body count increases, Kim and her team unravel a web of dark secrets, bringing them closer to the killer. But one of their own could be in mortal danger. Only this time, Kim might not be strong enough to save them…

The suspense just kept going. I was sucked in straight from the beginning. I tried to guess and predict the killer but wasn't able to. It was a very good mystery. I just could not put the book down. It had some twists, it was a devour.
I recommend this series to all mystery and thriller fans.

I want to thank Netgalley, the publisher and Angela Marsons for a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

Blood Lines is a fast-paced, action packed thriller that just gets better and better!
This was my first foray into the D.I. Kim Stone books, and I must say that I am hooked!

When the body of an upper-class woman is found in a seedy neighborhood, Detective Kim Stone is called to investigate. There’s something weird about this case, as the woman was not robbed, just simply stabbed with no evidence left behind. In the midst of this investigation, another body turns up with a similar stab wound. There’s nothing linking the crimes, so Stone and team must approach the crimes from every possible angle.

At the same time, Alex Thorne, Kim’s archnemesis, starts taunting the Detective Inspector from behind bars. Thorne has created a master plan to be acquitted of her crimes that will at the same time eliminate Kim Stone.

There are multiple storylines in Bloodlines, and what stood out to me was that they were all well developed. I wasn’t annoyed when one subplot shifted to the next because I found them all to be equally interesting. However, my favorite part of was watching the cat and mouse game play out between Kim and Alex. I can’t wait to read the other books in this series.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy of Blood Lines through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Bookouture and to Angela Marsons for the opportunity.

"Death is just too simple."

But nothing is simple for D.I. Kim Stone. If it weren't complicated, it wouldn't find its way into her wheelhouse of many spokes.

When a body of a well-dressed woman is found bedecked in Rolex watch and Burberry handbag, eyebrows become raised at the local authorities in Halesowen C.I.D. It turns out that she was employed by Children's Services. Now, who in the world would want to take this particular woman's life with a single knife wound to her torso? The reactions of her family members seem a bit odd as well.

But death doesn't seem to bare any distinct weakness of choice. A young female druggie is soon found with the exact same fatal wound as well. Someone is getting quite handy with a blade.

And just when you thought that our favorite sociopath, Dr. Alexandra Thorne, was put away in a tight package of prison, you would be mistaken. There's always the long arm of the law, you say. There's always the long arm of evil, too. "You should know something about me. I always decide when it's over."

But then, we know our D.I. Kim Stone. "Just tell her Kimmy's here." BOOYAH!!!

Angela Marsons rises to the occasion in each and every book in this series. She inserts diary events and an observer's reveries in just the right spots. The setting shifts from one location to another in rapid fire. And the players in this tilted game keep changing like the desert winds in Death Valley. (Oh, pun intended!)

Marsons had me flicking the light switch on in one scene when Kim views the back of her mother's now greyed head......Oh, Momma!

Let me just say, if you haven't started this series yet, get on the stick. Knowing Angela Marsons, the life of D.I. Kim Stone is rolling around inside that superbly talented head of hers. You don't want to be a heartbeat behind.

Blood Lines is book 5 in the D.I. Kim Stone series and is another gripping thriller from the Queen of crime Angela Marsons.

Psychiatrist Alex Thorne is back and still managing to wreak havoc on Kim’s life even while locked inside a prison.

Kim and her team are investigating two similar murders that seem to have no connection other than the way they were murdered, all the while battling her own unresolved issues.

This instalment delves further into Kim’s heartbreaking past and gives the reader real insight into the person she is and what motivates her.

The police procedurals are very well done and as they dig for small clues and links in each case we are thrown some surprising twists.

Multiple storylines are weaved throughout the novel coming together for a suspenseful and shocking finale.

Marsons has definitely secured her spot among the top authors in the crime/thriller genre. Her books have become an automatic ‘must read’ for me.

I received an ERC from the publisher via Netgalley.

Two lines from a classic family movie, The Wizard of Oz, kept running through my head as I read Angela Marsons’ Blood Lines. The first was, “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!” Spoken by the Wicked Witch to Dorothy, that line sent shivers through my entire body when I was a child, and I generally excused myself to go to my room, despite the teasing from my siblings that I was scared of the witch. Me? Scared? Darn right I was! The second line that kept popping up was, “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” Dorothy and her friends repeated this as they travelled through the Spooky Forest. What, you may wonder, does the Wizard of Oz have to do with DI Kim Stone?

Blood Lines is the fifth book in the Kim Stone series, and it marks the return of Dr. Alexandra Thorne, a sociopathic psychiatrist. Could a more dangerous combination exist than that of a person who is trained in understanding the workings of the mind but who has no emotional or moral compass to prevent her from manipulating others to do her bidding? This includes injuring and killing other human beings. I will take the Wicked Witch any day! Alex Thorne is behind bars, thanks to Kim Stone, (Evil Games) but Alex is obsessed with Kim and is determined to gain the upper hand. Kim, for her part, thinks she understands Alex, but can she resist her devious attempts to control her?

Lions and tigers and bears…Stone and her team – Bryant, Dawson, and Stacey – investigate the stabbing death of a woman, which eventually appears to become the work of a serial killer. They have a suspect, but is he really the murderer? Meanwhile, even while incarcerated, Alex is wreaking havoc inside and outside the prison walls, trying to draw “Kimmy” into her trap. Danger seems to lurk everywhere! Who is the real threat?

As always, the characterization is superb! Kim Stone has been painted as lacking in social decorum, but she is someone I would want going to bat for me. She defends her team members to her boss when they go astray, then takes them aside and sets them straight. She goes above and beyond time and again for victims because there is a huge part of her that understands their pain. That pain comes from the nightmare that was her childhood and from the emotional wounds inflicted by her mother that she has not allowed to heal. Alex Thorne knows this and seeks to exploit it. Will Kim recognize this? Will she understand that all of burden that she bears is due to her failure – her reluctance – her fear – of dealing with her past? I look forward to future episodes to see how she progresses.

Alex Thorne. What can I say about this evil sorceress? I disliked her in Evil Games. But in this book, I just sat back and marveled at the genius behind this character. Has Alex met her match in the intelligent, fiercely determined Kim Stone? (Thankfully, the witch did not go after Barney!)

This was one thriller where I took a mostly passive role as a reader. I did not run to my room and hide, but I did not try to solve the puzzle either. There were so many surprises! I just sat back and enjoyed the ride. And, oh, what a ride! If there’s one thing I could ask for, it would be more development of Stacey’s character, but everything else was fabulous! Alex vs Kim and team, oh my!

I’m a little late to the party with this series and that’s definitely tainted my enjoyment of this particular book. Blood Lines is the fifth book in the series, but it’s only the second I’ve read; the first being Play Dead (book 4). I jumped right in to PLAY DEAD and was immediately sucked in with the gore and creepiness of the body farm and Kim Stone’s lack of tact. I never felt like I was missing out by not having read any of the prior books. This time, with BLOOD LINES, not so much. The entire time I was reading, I felt like I was on the outside of the circle looking in. I wanted to lose myself in the story and get wrapped up with the characters, but for the majority of the book, I felt like I was just going through the motions in hopes that I would start to care. I didn't connect the way I wanted to and I'm blaming that on not having read Evil Games (book 2).

Apparently, Kim Stone met her nemesis, Dr. Alex Thorne, back in EVIL GAMES. The psychologist is sitting in prison now, but she’s still the puppet master pulling the strings. Alex has the devious skills needed to manipulate just about anyone to get what she wants; even from behind bars. Her next target - D.I. Kim Stone. With three dead bodies and a ton of history between them, it comes down to who can outsmart who.

Without a doubt, Kim Stone is a badass. She’s strong, smart and doesn’t take crap from anyone. I’m talking NO ONE. You have to admire that about her. She might not have the best delivery, but her antics keep things interesting and her sidekick Byrant makes for an interesting match-up. He's the only one that can sort of keep Kim in check and pull out a different side of her. Kim’s demeanor starts to make more and more sense when we get a peek of what she's been hiding behind her mask.

I’m pretty confident, I would have enjoyed this one more if I was up-to-date on the series. It was an action-packed read that kept me guessing until the very end.

Is Kim Stone becoming more human? It sure seems so in this book, and that makes her an even better character. She's still feisty and brash, don't get me wrong! Everything we love about her is still there, but she's showing she cares more often.

I just love Bryant to pieces. When he got all serious and called Kim "Kim" instead of "Guv" my heart melted. There's a lot of growth in Kevin Dawson in this book, and I see a bright future for him. Stacy is, well, Stacy, diviner of all things digital. I believe her accent was more prominent in this book, and that added a little flavor.

Dialogue is splendid! I love the banter between members of the team.

On the downside, I really dreaded the Alex Thorne chapters. She is despicable to the max. I hope to never encounter her again.

This is an excellent addition to the Kim Stone series, and I can't wait to see what's next!

Angela Marsons just keeps getting better and better

And the first part of the plan worked.
It was awesome. I was awesome.
I know it was the smile that get it. It's a smile perfected over the years.
I have a good looking face. I know this. People stare and I smile. For that I used my practice performance smile. So one that has got me through life. It has got me everything I wanted. It has got me out of trouble. I am told it's beguiling.
Personally I prefer my real one. The smile that feels natural on my face. The one that says I'm winning. My favorite smile.
The execution of the plan was painful in its Simplicity. I offered to walk her home, smiled, look down and then up again, a question in my eyes.
She hesitated.
My smile turned tremulous.
She nodded.
Result.
There came up point on the journey when there was a choice. Not about what I was doing. That was never in question. It was left to her house and write to mine.
She wanted to go left. I did not.
No one heard her scream.

********

Blood Lines by Angela Marsons is the fifth book of the DI Kim Stone series and the storylines are chilling, exciting, fast paced, and very difficult to put down. This instalment is no exception! Kim Stone is at her best, and yet, she remains vulnerable to emotional devastation stemming from her mother's abuse and the death of her twin brother when they were just young children. Despite the tough, unbreakable, driven, and stoic exterior, her childhood scars run deep, the damage irreparable. That's why she keeps everything, buried, sealed up in secret boxes in her mind. Boxes she never opens. Ever.
Few know her secret, know about her one weakness that can still bring her to the brink of insanity. Maybe beyond.
She thinks she's safe. One enemy is in prison and is never getting out. The other is locked in a psychiatric hospital forever.
Or are they?

Once you start reading this series, you won't want to stop!

#5 in the D.I. Kim Stone series.

This series keeps getting better and better. The author packs so much into this book including the return of the evil Dr. Alexandra Thorne who almost brought Kim down in an earlier book Evil Games. Kim is also dealing with the possibility of her mother being freed and at the same time leading her team on a series of murders, with apparently random subjects yet obviously killed by the same person.

Both the action and the writing are fast paced and totally gripping. Kim is distracted by her personal problems but still manages to guide her team to success. She also demonstrates what a strong person she is and I still think she is like an English version of Eve Dallas.

This was a great read and I am so looking forward to the next book.

She’s ba-a-a-ck!

DI Kim Stone and her team are investigating the stabbing murder of a well-regarded social worker that’s presenting a tough challenge for them. When a second murder occurs with similar characteristics but no other apparent relationship, Kim needs her full, undivided attention to solve these cases. But she’s highly distracted because her very real nemesis, incarcerated psychologist Alex Thorne, is up to no good from behind prison walls.

I was intimidated by Alex Thorne when she first appeared in Evil Games, finding her one of the most diabolical characters I’d encountered in fiction. Somehow I knew we hadn’t heard the last of her and, sure enough, she’s back at it, getting in Kim’s head like no one else is able to do. While the murder cases were interesting and true puzzlers, I was distracted by what was going on with Alex and Kim. Believe me, it was not a given that Kim would win this encounter without residual consequences and she made lots of missteps.

This is a riveting story that will not let you go. I cannot even comment on the strength or substance of the murder investigations as I was so wrapped up in the sideshow. It was as outrageous as we would expect from the manipulative Ms. Thorne and just as gnarly as the chief cases. And, as usual, the narrator heightened my anxiety with her exceptional performance. It was a relief when this one ended because my nerves were shot. Yes, I’m loving it!

In her acknowledgements at the end of Blood Lines, author Angela Marsons writes 'Ultimately this became the book that I didn't want to finish.'. I didn't want to finish it either. It was one of those rare reads that I just wanted to go on forever.

I savoured every page. I went back and reread parts, and rolled them around in my mind rather like you do with a good wine in your mouth, getting every particle of pleasure possible from it.

Blood Lines is the blue ribbon of the series - so far. Marsons never fails to astound me. Just when I think she can't possibly come up with anything better than she has already written, she goes and proves me wrong. Blood Lines is deliciously twisted, nail-biting, breath-taking reading.

Marsons is a master of her art. If you haven't yet read Marsons, I seriously suggest you start. And of course you must start at #1 Silent Scream. I defy you to stop there......

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copy of Blood Lines by Angela Marsons for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Angela Marsons is back to her dangerously thrilling best in this instalment. Not only is the terrible, manipulative Dr. Alex Thorne reaching back into her life, she has a complex case to deal with, and a serious look back into her past. It's cleverly plotted, keeps up energy throughout, and reveals so much more about how Kim became who she is today.

Easily the best she's written, this book proves Angela Marsons is at the top of her game.

Just when you think that Angela Marsons writing can't get any better you soon realize how wrong can you be ....
In my opinion its her best book so far and when you look at the ratings of her other books you know your going to be in for a classy fantastic roller coaster ride of a thriller but this one has just exceeded my expectations.

Detective Kim Stone is back to her best. Two bodies are found, both are killed in the same way but that is where the similarities end, there is nothing else to link the murders. One of the victims is a social worker and from an affluent area and another one is a young drug addict.

Only two days into the week and she was already just one body short of a serial killer.

Meanwhile Kim receives a letter from an old adversary, psychopath Dr Alex Thorne who is now in prison for her part in the manipulation of her patients.

Alex.... still twisted and obsessed with Kim, wants her to come to visit her in prison, she has something for her.

 photo original_zpsqha42cwj.gif

Alex is going to win this time and nothing and no one will stand in her way for her own means as well as to get to Kim Stone, using Kim's mother and her terrible past to do it.

Will Kim finally succumb and fall for Alex Thornes terrifying manipulation and destroy Kim once and for all or will she see through Alex's plans before another person is killed.

A really excellent exciting thriller, with all the twists and turns you are kept hooked until the last page.
Alex Thorne is just as chilling as ever. What a fantastic character she is.

Kim is still fighting her past demons and with news about her mother... its now putting Kims vulnerability to the test again and on top of that a killer is on the loose, time is running out and someone close is now in terrible danger.

Fantastic twist at the end.......

3.5 Stars for Blood Lines

I love this series & the character of Kim Stone. Unfortunately, this is my least favorite installment to date. It's not a bad read. It still has all the elements I have to come to love and expect from Marsons. I simply wasn't as into the case in this book as I have been with the other books though I think it was because I had high expectations.

I was psyched when I saw Dr. Alex Thorne was back - having previously enjoyed the back and forth power plays & mind games between her and Kim. That aspect of the book was definitely interesting and kept me reading. Alex is one hell of a sociopath/villain. I enjoyed delving deeper into Kim's life and how it shapes who she is. I also appreciated gaining more insight into her relationship with her team who I have come to regard as favorite characters.

I just wasn't overly impressed by the whodunnit in this book. I expected more based on all the emphasis put on the precise knife wounds, the lack of emotion displayed in the kills and the nonexistent leads which sent the team reeling. With that build-up, the killer simply didn't add up for me. I expected something bigger and definitely more sinister.

Aside from that, this was still a solid book in the series. It offered invaluable insight on Kim & included some great cat and mouse moments with Dr. Thorne. As always, looking forward to what the next book brings our way in what is definitely a top notch series.

Another delicious 5 star read from an author who is quickly becoming one of my top 5 favorites!

I could honestly just leave my review with these 4 words:

Alex Thorne is BACK!

If you don't know who Dr Alex Thorne is, you are truly missing out on one of the most devious and intriguing antagonists that I have run across. Marsons certainly knows how to create memorable characters!

But don't start here. Dr Thorne makes her grand debut in book 2 Evil Games, but I recommend that you start right at book 1 Silent Scream.

You won't want to miss a single chapter of this amazing police procedural series that offers strong, believable characters and intricate story lines with complex mystery and suspense all wrapped up in under 350 pages.

I can't get enough of Detective Kim Stone and look forward to what is next for her and her team.
My only question: Have we seen the last of Dr. Thorne? I certainly hope not!

The 5th Kim Stone book I've read, and I'm going to have to repeat myself by saying once more that they keep getting better. I found myself getting slightly lost through the first half, but that probably had more to do with me reading while on holiday in Sorrento and getting constantly distracted. Normally I can immerse myself in a read while on holiday, but not on this occasion. Loving Angela Marson's writing as much as I do, that simply wouldn't do, so I packed the kindle away and saved it for when I got home, and those pages simply flew by. The last half was simply unputdownable.

I'm not going to delve into plot, save to say that a fantastic crazy psychologist returns, adding extra twists and turns to a great story. I simply can't wait for the next book, and if they continue to improve as they have done so far, Goodreads will need to allow me a few extra stars.

Great stories and fantastic characters that you come to know more and more with each encounter. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see this being made into a TV series sometime in the future. It deserves to be; Kim Stone would make for fantastic viewing, especially racing around on that motorbike.

Thanks Netgalley and Angela Marsons for the gift of a great story in return for an impartial review

FULL REVIEW UP!
Fantastic! Have I told you how much I love this series?!!

Blood Lines is the 5th book in the D.I. Kim Stone series and it’s another great addition to the series!

Blood Lines starts off with D.I. Kim Stone and her crew investigating the homicide of a caring, social worker named Deanna Brightman. It looks to be a car prowl gone wrong but this scenario could be further from the truth. The investigation squad starts looking into Deanna’s life, family and cases as a social worker.
But when a drug victim, Maxine Wakeman is found with the exact same wounds, the investigation becomes more complex. The crew is trying to link the two victims which has become difficult because there's nothing in common between the two women.

As this plot direction is being developed, Blood Lines brings back Dr. Alex Thorne from the 2nd book in the series, Evil Games.

Hell yes, I love to hate Dr. Alex Thorne!!!! Angela Marsons could not have wrote a better character to HATE!

Dr. Alex Thorne is a sociopath and in prison. She’s pulling strings and planning events to finally destroy D.I. Kim Stone.
The cat and mouse game between Alex and Kim is fantastic. I love reading the interactions between the two and hoping Kim can keep strong and take out this evil bitch of a woman.

Another excellent addition to the D.I. Kim Stone series!
If you love crime detective books, look no further then this series. I’m very critical on this genre since I read crime, mystery and thrillers the most.
I have not been let down once while reading this series. The writing, plots and characterization is just excellent!!

Firstly thank you to the publishers, who thankfully often grant me access to their new books, Net Galley and of course the very talented Angela Marsons, one of my favourites.

Apologies in the delay of reading, and also the time ready reading the book, work commitments not allowing me the time.

DI Kim Stone is one of my favourite characters in this crime/thriller genre. The trials in her own background determines how she responds to individuals is rated on the varying degrees on her personal ‘don’t muck me about Stoneometer': the vulnerable ones have her full and immediate attention, her close knit team know how she works especially when they’re testing the little patience she possesses, and throw in the odd psychopath now and then and it’s a challenge she will rise to.

Stone’s cold and even frosty attitude is a stark contrast of how she fights the corner of the victims in the cases she works. In this case, two unrelated victims from entirely different backgrounds are discovered with a single fatal stab wound and, as ever, she is determined to get justice for them - thank heavens for Bryant, her trusty side-kick, who has ample diplomacy for the both of them when dealing with the general public and oddly uncooperative family members!

During the investigation Bryant senses a shift for the worse in the DI’s usual testy mood and realises something is amiss, but as his boss rarely lets her guard down its difficult to determine the reason why. But, we know that Dr Alexandra Thorne is attempting to use her high intelligence and knowledge to get her way back into the detective's life via ways she know will breech the DI’s tough exterior and cause her to lose control – inviting someone with the merciless supremacy of Alex Thorne into the driving seat of your life is not something you would want given her track record, believe me!

One of the great strengths of the book, is the great dry humour and great characters of Stone's coldness and Bryant's attitude with her, a great relationship between the two. This book also bringing Dawson's character forward more.

Here we have the return of one nasty character in Dr Alexander Thorne, but Kim Stone is a lady you don't want to mess with and she shows that again when she has to entertain Alexandra Thorne's sick games. Here we have through the book, a mental battle between two very strong and intelligent women.

Angela Marsons keeps to her usual very high standard of writing, character building, twists and shocks with this fast paced, gripping thriller , keeps your attention as you follow two strong plots.

The well-dressed social worker could have been sleeping – but the single stab wound to her abdomen told the police otherwise. Alone in her car with no evidence and nothing to show what or why, the mystery of her death was only the beginning for Detective Kim Stone and her team. Within days of the investigation, another body was found; her death was caused by the same single stab wound. Kim’s unease was heightened – no obvious links between the victims; they couldn’t have been more different, but Kim was sure they were linked.

The letter Kim received at her home sent chills down her spine – how could Alex Thorne, incarcerated for her psychotic crimes – have managed to contact her? But it was what the words said that threatened her peace of mind. Immediately Kim’s past rose up and enveloped her – but she needed to put it aside to concentrate on the investigation at hand…

Kim’s unease continued – she was sure she was being watched. But she kept the pressure going; gradually lies and deceit began to unfold. But was it enough? The danger was intense; Kim knew she was in a race against time – would they catch the killer before it was too late? And would Kim crack in the face of her nemesis?

Angela Marsons has a brilliant character in Detective Kim Stone – her unique toughness is laced with a softness which often makes her vulnerable. But the re-entry of Kim’s nemesis, Dr Alex Thorne, was a masterful stroke in the latest D.I. Kim Stone thriller. Blood Lines has a gripping and intense plot which grabbed me from the first page – the pace is relentless; the twists are chilling. Another brilliant episode in this series, and one I have no hesitation in recommending highly.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy to read in exchange for my honest review.

This series just keeps getting better and better! Great characters, great plots and a really evil adversary who wants to mess with detective Kim Stone's head.

In this fifth episode in the series, Kim and her team are investigating the murder of a middle aged woman, the Deputy Director of Children's Services and a young female drug addict, seemingly unrelated but killed in the same way. While they are grappling with how these murders could possibly be related, Kim's old foe, psychiatrist and sociopath Dr Alexandra Thorne is pulling the strings from her prison cell, determined to be released on appeal and plotting her revenge on Kim.

Angela Marsons brilliantly manages to juggle these two story lines, keeping a good balance between the mysterious murders and the evil plotting of the chillingly psychotic Dr Thorne. Dr Thorne has studied Kim well and thinks she knows what makes her tick but she doesn't factor in that Kim also knows a lot about Dr Thorne and how her perverted mind works. I love the short, snappy chapters that keep both threads on track and don't waste time with unnecessary padding. I feel that we're getting to see a bit more of Kim's character and what's led to her being a motorcycle riding feisty fighter. I'm also enjoying the development of the other characters in Kim's team, Bryant, Dawson and Stacey. Definitely a hard to put down, page turner with quite a few twisty bits. Can't wait to see what Ms Marsons writes next!

With thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for a digital copy of the book to read and review.

Thank you to Bookoutour via Net Galley for my copy.

This author is another of my selected favourite authors.
DI Kim Stone is real! Oh yes she is. The more crimes she solves the more we glimpse of her own troubled background.

She's head strong, she's determined, she runs a great team. But she has a side to her that I descovered in this latest book in the series that had me spinning like a top on its axis.

The plot of the crime was so well thought out. Every step Kim took, I took too.
Her partner that works alongside her makes it the ingredients in the equation that moles so well.

When the book takes on a chapter from another angle from a diary it becomes more intriguing but, when some chapters are taken over by the "baddie" itself it makes you sit up and take notice.

I really binged on the chapters, word by word.

Absolutely brilliant.

Once again another great book from Angela Marsons, the fifth in the series. Ms Marsons seems to have an innate ability to tell a story that completely captivates you and keeps you turning the pages until the end. In this story apart from dealing with two murders which seem identical in their method, Kim also is faced once again with the manipulative and cold sociopath Dr Alex Thorne, the one she was lucky to escape from with her life. Once again Thorne is trying to use everything she has to undermine Kim and Kim is fighting with everything she has to beat her demons and her old nemesis. Great story, strong characters, thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Brilliant! Thrilling! Suspenseful! Gripping! Intriguing! There are not enough adjectives to describe how I feel about this fifth D. I. Kim Stone book, BLOOD LINES by Angela Marsons. When I think Ms. Marsons has given me everything in a mystery/thriller/British police procedural I could possibly want, she surprises me once again with even more.

Kim and her team start investigating the stabbing death of an apparent carjacking victim, but something just doesn’t feel right to Kim and soon they have more victims with the same stab wound, but nothing else to connect them. No evidence at any of the scenes leaves the team struggling.

Adding to the stress of a tough case, the sociopath psychiatrist, Alex Thorne is back and has worked out a plan to eliminate the roadblocks to her release from prison, permanently. Kim barely kept her sanity dealing with Alex in book two and knows that another sparring match may push her over the edge, but she feels she has no choice. Alex has manipulated everyone around her again, even while in prison and Kim needs to figure out her end game and stop her no matter the cost.

The two plot lines intertwine to perfection in this book. The theme runs through both, but I can’t say more without giving a spoiler. Even the title is perfect for this book. I feel this book is perfectly plotted and paced. I put it down once only due to work. I would have been compelled to read it through in one sitting otherwise.

The characters are realistic and as in all the previous books, I look forward to what new insights Ms. Marsons will reveal about each. Kim is once again facing psychological implosion from her interactions with Alex Thorne and she also throws in the possible release of her mentally ill mother. Bryant is proving once again to be Kim’s rock and best friend besides her partner. Stacey and Dawson also continue to grow into their roles.

This book can be read as a standalone, but to understand the richness of Ms. Marsons’ characters, you really should start at book one and read how they grow. I cannot recommend this series enough! This is a must read series for me!

A huge thank you to Bookouture and Net Galley for allowing me to read this eARC in exchange for an honest review. Perfect!

Kudos to my Goodread friends who turned me onto Angela Marsons and her Kim Stone series. And thanks to netgalley for providing me with this fifth in the series. This was my first by Ms. Marsons but will certainly not be my last. For those of you, like me, always on the lookout for a new mystery series, this is it! And for those wondering if it works to read this book without having read the others, I had no trouble. Which isn't to say I won't be reading those first four (I’ve already bought the first one). There are references to a prior book and a certain criminal from the prior book features prominently here. But I didn't feel lost or confused.

This is a fast read and a good heart pounder. DI Kim Stone is a great lead character. “Being helpful was not a natural disposition for her”. My kind of gal. Not warm, not cuddly. True Type A, wanting it all done right. Still, she's a good boss, trying to teach her team. And you have to love anyone so devoted to her dog. But she has her demons, especially a history with an abusive mother, so all is not right in her world.

Marsons does an equally good job making Bryant and the rest of the team feel like real flesh and blood people.

The book runs along the twin paths- the aforementioned tale with the prior criminal and then a serial killer whose victims have nothing in common but the manner of death. Both storylines are engaging and kept my interest. A fabulous ending that I never saw coming.

My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
