Former Army Ranger turned government assassin Álvaro Montero and CIA Officer Caiden Cardosa crossed paths two years ago in Vienna, where their encounter ended less than amicably—despite the explosive sexual chemistry between them.

Now Caiden is riding a desk at Langley after his cover is blown. And Álvaro—who was “killed”—has a new identity and purpose as Delta/D, an operative for the Locke and Keyes Agency, under the leadership of the mysterious Alpha Orion.

When D and Caiden team up in a deadly black ops mission, the urge to kill each other will have to take a back seat to the desire for revenge against the man who betrayed them both. Surviving the mission won’t be easy. Resisting the passion between them—that might be impossible.

I am a huge fan of anything "alpha" man related. Which is why I have a great love for cops, FBI agents, secret agents, military men and so forth ;) Now when those men also decide to get down and dirty with each other.... My day is made :P

[crop output image]

So you can guess, that this book ...or I should say this whole series...is right up my alley. D and Caiden were absolutely awesome (read HOT) together.

The banter back and forth was delicious, as were the sexy times. That said, I could have done with a bit slower pacing when it came to the "I love you's" ... but hey, when you know you know ;)

Even though I knew who the bad guy was right from the start, I still very much enjoyed the story. I won't go into the whole plot, because you just need to read it for yourself.

Now as much as I liked D and Caiden's story,  I think I am gonna love Si's story a tad bit more. I pretty much fell in love with the guy the moment he was introduced, so I can't wait to get my grabby hands on his book. Hope the wait won't be too long !!

I really like Charlie Cochet's work (I swear!), but Kept in the Dark was a bit of a mess for me.

Okay, I'll admit I don't love romantic suspense, so perhaps the story may work better for another reader. However, as much as I tried to like this one, I couldn't get past my feelings of meh.

The story was quick and fast-paced, but the chemistry felt extremely forced and rushed for me. I know these guys have a past together and so some of the initial meeting/chemistry details are assumed, but the muddled storyline and the forced proximity made the romance feel unnatural.

I know that romances, especially these covert ops romances, are pure fantasy, but I felt like my imagination had to stretch 10 miles long to wrap my brain around this one. I didn't even feel like that with Hell & High Water, and that was a military-shifter book!

I don't know... I was mildly entertained, but the writing felt clunky and the romance wasn't my thing. I won't be continuing on in the series.

I won’t wax on about THIRDS still being a top favorite series, but I will say that Cochet has a knack for writing about law enforcement military types - loners or those with traumatic pasts or internal issues that are all overcome and solved by of course, love.

This is her latest series about a black ops group under the cover name of Locke and Keyes, and headed by the elusive and secret “Alpha”, who takes in those special men (who also just so happen to be gay or bi or pan - how lucky for us right?) and creates an interesting mix of outcasts who form their own brand of loyal-to-the-death family.

Here, the first story focuses on ex-military assassin Alavaro, left for dead and reborn as Delta, who continues to use his deadly skills to mete out justice. When he’s paired with a past lover, burned CIA operative Caiden, it soon becomes apparent that neither has forgotten their one night of passion those many months ago. It just so happens they were betrayed by the same person, and Alpha is giving them the means to get answers and revenge. The only thing is, they have to do it together or not at all.

Admittedly, I had low expectations because of the above reasons regarding THIRDS, and I will concede that I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this after I checked in my reality meter at the door. Of course, this was sappy and cheesy, but it had a good amount of snark and high stakes action. Of course, this is way insta-love as these two battle each other and their own selves in spite of their lightning quick feelings that they had never let go.

This was fun with a fast pace, and I like the idea of this series’ setup because apparently, there are way bigger fish to fry and plenty of team members ready to do their part in conquering evil while falling in love with each other as well.

Reliable Cochet fluff that worked a treat this time around! Cheers!

Kept in the Dark was so good! We all need the next one. I need it. Thrilling, steamy and hilarious all in one! Obviously, my first Cochet novel so I don’t really know the ‘formula’ when it comes to this author’s writing. The blurb promised an excellent story and I could say it delivered.

This book is an absolute riot from start to finish packed with just what I like to read in my romantic suspense stories.

It has two distinct and likeable MCs, a good tight-paced plot, lots of humour, great side characters you want to know more about, the element of mystery which drives a series and explosive chemistry between Caiden and D.

The ultimate villain of the piece was, for me anyway, I think a little bit obvious once a particular comment was made, but even so, the narrative still drives an excellent tension through to the conclusion.

There are loads of laughs in this one too, it's perhaps not up to Ace's level of joking from Charlie's Love in Spades but it's still very funny at times. It's also super steamy, Cade and D burn up the sheets and there are lots of totally delicious jealous on both sides as they go undercover for their mission.

This new series promises all sorts of fun going forward and I can't wait for Si's story next. As a PS, I absolutely LOVE that the whole black ops team is named after stars in the Orion constellation 😁

Kept in the Dark didn't blow me away like I'd hoped it would even though the banter was sharp, the whole Alpha story intriguing, and lots of action and steam.

If I'm honest I found D (that irritated me something rotten, call the man by his damn name!) and Caiden got rather sappy at times and don't even get me started on when Caiden declared his love - talk about an inopportune moment. 🙄

I'll probably read the next book in the series, and keep reading them till I find out more about Alpha.

This is your typical Cochet romantic-suspense fare, with plenty of heart and great banter between the hot as sin, badass men who fell in love within these pages.

I could quite happily read Cochet’s books forever and a day, but I will admit that there were a few moments — moments that were messy, rushed, brushed over, something — which made this particular one a little less of a winner than some of my preferred Cochet favourites.

Still, I had a lot of fun briefly living in this covert, kick ass, secret agent/agency world. With how full-tilt the action and romance progressed, there was little time to do anything but buckle in and enjoy the ride, for which I’m certainly not complaining.

So far, the set-up for more books in this series seems promising, with a myriad of potentially great male leads being introduced towards the end there.

As for now, I enjoyed this exciting and sexy second-chance story between presumed dead government assassin, Alvaro Montero, and his sassy and gorgeous counterpart, CIA agent Caiden Cardosa. Their story was pretty much the book equivalent of an action blockbuster, and once again, I’m certainly not complaining.

I discovered Charlie Cochet earlier this year when I read her Four Kings Security series and I fell in love with all the men in that universe.

I was excited to start a new series of hers but I am sad to say I did not enjoy Kept in the Dark, I struggled with it, I don't mind insta love but Caiden and D just annoyed me, D was supposed to be a cold blooded killer, he was more like a cuddly teddy bear and the villain was like The Terminator just kept on coming.

I did start this a couple of weeks ago, but I stopped to read another new release, I ended up skimming a few chapters and I have two to go, maybe, I did finish only by skimming to the end.

It does take me a couple of books to get into a new series sometimes so I might enjoy the next book in the Locke and Keyes Agencies better.

An awesome beginning for new series! The suspense is edgy, the humor is hilarious, the men are s*exy, the heat level is hot HOT! Ms Cochet never disappoints! This story features two men who had to give up their lives after a terrible betrayal, and two years later still search for answers. But what happens when the truth is out in the open? Does it feel good to know or does it fill them with regret?

Álvaro Montero is dead or as dead as everyone but select few know. After a hit that should have ended him, he had to leave everything behind to protect his family. Now he is D. He has found a new purpose in life in exposing the dirtiest criminals and bringing the weight of the law on them. His life is full of adrenaline rush and meaningless hook ups, and he tells himself that it's enough. Only deep inside he still remembers the man that he can never see again. But work in Alpha Orion is never dull, and he is brought face to face with his past lover and past mistakes. I liked D's sense of humor, the way he took care of Caiden. He might have physically left him but he also left a small piece of his heart behind.

Caiden Cardosa might have been a disappointment to his social climbing parents but out there in the field he was the best. But a man sneaking into the night and anonymous call put an end to his brilliant career and put him back to square one. Now he is listless while pushing papers at the office and slowly dying on the inside. But a late night phone call from mysterious Alpha gives him an opportunity to finally find closure and find the person who betrayed him. He never expects to see the man who still haunts his thoughts to be the one to help him. I loved Caiden undercover. He is so self confident and a wonderful agent. The situations he gets to with D are hilarious, the chemistry between them is undeniably explosive yet underneath it all are the tender feelings that never left and now are getting only stronger.

The case takes them to the wealthiest and the dirtiest of criminals - the Steward. The lengths they go to find what they need nearly shatters the newfound bond between them but Caiden finally sees that the knowledge is not worth losing the best thing he has ever found - D and their love for each other. But the clock is ticking, and there are others who are ready to make a move to find the info that can prove deadly. In the end the secrets still come out and devastate no matter what. But D and Caiden work together to make sure that nothing else happens. It's action packed, intense and thrilling. I loved the fast-paced adventure and love between two hard men that mellowed for each other. Ah, another winner! I highly recommend it!

4.5 stars - A new Charlie Cochet series!! Count me in. This series starter turned out to have all of the elements I have come to love from Charlie and her colorful cast of hotties. Here, we have a very specialized black ops group operating under the guys of the Locke and Keyes Agency, run by Alpha Orion. The members all have code names that correspond to constellations/astronomy – Delta, Epsilon, etc. and each are very unique and bring their own set of special skills. Little is known by anyone as to who Alpha Orion actually is/are, but they have come to trust him/her/them regardless.

An interesting and twisty tale is woven with Álvaro (now known as “D”) and Caiden. They shared a night of hot sex that didn’t end well when D disappeared on Caiden. Now, a few years later, after believing Álvaro was killed, Caiden is brought in by Alpha Orion on a special mission lured in with the opportunity for Caiden to find out who blew his cover and almost had him killed (thus ending his undercover career) and for D to find out who had actually killed, or tried to kill him. Despite their animosity about the past, the attraction is still blazing hot, and the chance to obtain justice is too much to pass up.

One of my favorite aspects is reading is fun, witty, snarky banter, with a little dirty talk for added fun. Ms. Cochet is a pro at creating characters who possess just that talent. I chuckled more than once at these two, loved their chemistry (something else Ms. Cochet seems to effortlessly provide) and rooted for them from the get go. I just knew there would be some bumps in the road for them, and a few twists and turns provided those as well.

Needless to say, this was another winner for me that left me excited and looking forward to reading more about the L&K gang. My only real niggle was the extremely insta-love aspect. I understood some of it here, and the story had to be wrapped up in a certain amount of time, but it detracts from the overall story for me, giving it a unrealistic feel despite any of the other unrealisticness that may be going on already. Aside from that, bring on the next one as the team grows and we learn more about each of them. You really can’t go wrong with a Charlie Cochet book.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Kept in the Dark is the first book in Charlie Cochet’s new Locke and Keyes Agency series, and things are off to a wonderful start. I was drawn in right away by the interesting set up and two really engaging characters in D and Caiden. We get a great enemies to lovers vibe right from the start as the men are at odds, but forced to work together if they have any hope of finding out who betrayed them. It is clear that the chemistry between the men is strong, even as they bicker with one another. And when they finally give in to their attraction, it is intense and super sexy. Cochet gives us a great backstory for the guys and I enjoyed seeing how the story unfolded as we slowly learn the truth about what happened to each of them that fateful night. The relationship does move very quickly when it does get rolling given the short time they are together, so that felt kind of rushed to me. But I did really enjoy the men together and think they make a fun couple.

This one just didn't work for me. Cochet is a great writer and comedy and sexy fun times are her bread and butter, so the book isn't bad but to me, the MCs just felt a bit like mash-ups of her tried-and true hits. Government assassins/lawmen with hearts of gold who are funny/sassy and oh so hot. And I guess this series is going for straight up fun/suspension of disbelief b/c their actions before the big reveal...just wow. I guess I wasn't expecting it to go full on soap opera off the rails cray-cray like it did, so it caught me off guard. This book is definitely about shutting off your brain and reading about two hot dudes having fun while supposedly being on a spy mission bc there is more side mission fun time shenanigans and drama from this one night stand they had two years ago and not a lot of emotional depth from either to back up all the feels they seem to have about it, but the book is funny and definitely good if you just want some Cochet fun times to turn off your brain. It just didn't gel for me, but I know what to expect going forward with the series.

I absolutely loved this. I love diving into new Cochet books, they're always so so good.

This is a fun, entertaining new series about a group of men who have died (but were resuscitated like D) or almost died and thus are believed to be dead by the known world, but who this mysterious Alpha takes in to work for them taking down corrupt people, and murderers and rapists and any other kind of bad guy you can think of.

No one knows who Alpha is (and I'm super curious about who it is, and wonder if we will ever get to know) but they all trust Alpha, and Alpha so far has never steered them wrong.

Two years ago, Caiden and D (aka Álvaro Montero) slept with each other one night, but when Caiden went to the bathroom afterward, D left, and Caiden didn't know why, given not only how good the sex was, but that there was a connection. But since he left, Caiden tried to forget about it and think of it as nothing, and why D left...well, that's something you'll have to read to find out, because we all know D was as into it as Caiden was.

Unfortunately, basically right after that, Caiden was arrested, and then accused of being a terrorist. Because of that, he barely escaped Vienna with his life, and as a spy he couldn't be in the field anymore because his cover had been blown. Being put on desk duty, essentially, is not what Caiden truly loves and is fairly miserable in those two years.

D, it turns out, was shot and died and was resuscitated, as was mentioned, and taken in, basically, by Alpha. It took months and months for him to recover, but once he did he assumed the new identity of D (for Delta....and also I'm a little disappointed Caiden never made a "give me the D" type of joke ;)) he started doing some good.

They're thrown back together when Alpha brings in Caiden because he wants him and Caiden on a mission that will identify the person that not only betrayed Caiden and labeled him as a terrorist, but that same person who had D killed. They're one and the same, so Caiden and D have to work together, only things are a little....tense and salty between them.

Because no matter how many times Caiden tells himself it didn't matter, his night with D did matter, and two years later he's still hurt by it, and D has his reasons and is trying to push Caiden away at every turn, even though he ultimately, of course, can't stay away from him.

Their chemistry, was of course, scorching hot. Their love also came through as the story went on, and I was just enjoying the ride.

When everything comes to a head, it's exciting and on-the-edge-of-your seat good. I couldn't put this down last night and actually stayed up until 5AM finishing it. Yep. I could not put it down. And I just wanted to see these two get their HEA, which they totally get.

We, of course, have a cast of characters in the Locke and Keyes Agency, so we will be getting more deliciously good romances in this new, wonderful series that I am already hooked to. I can't wait for more!

I HIGHLY recommend this, especially if you're a fan of Cochet. It was just so so good. Two BIG thumbs up from me!

Good parts:
The humour
The banter
The characters enimosity
The dialogues
The content

Bad parts:
The story revolved around D's jealousy
Caiden was supposed to hate D and not just give in so fucking easily
D was annoying
Too fast with the development of relationship
They literally decided to get fucking married like 2 seconds after D was being a total commitment phobe.

Kept in the Dark is the book I was looking for after missing Ty and Zane, this was like another universe of Ty and Zane, my two most favorite characters in my MM read.
D and Caiden were actually 'enemy' to lovers giving their 'hook-up' story two years ago.
This book was romance with action as a spice. Actually, I didn't really mind about the action, it was just the right portion.

The romance between D and Caiden moving really fast, from enemy to lovers. If you're not a fan of love at first 'fight', don't read this book. There were some scenes I didn't really want to read, a little bummer when D decided that what he did was better for Caiden, I wanted to punch him, and Caiden was no better at stupid decision.

Though the 'L' word came too soon, I think I was fine with that, because they really deserved to be together after what they had been through.
This action story was thick with romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
There was one character stole my interest, Harrison and Si. And I'm glad that Si will get his own story in the next book. Can't wait!

I had a hard time to put this book down, ended with a headache after I finished it at 4 in the morning. This is one of those book you don't want to put down before you finish. Recommended!

I'm not entirely convinced that this is a story I will remember, but I definitely liked Caiden and D.

This book combines several themes that I particularly like. D is a hit man with a heart of gold and Caiden is a legendary CIA agent who worked undercover for many years. I also love enemies to lovers stories. And this story has not only that, but also another theme that I like as much - a second chance romance. Yeah, definitely everything I like.

I like the dynamics in D and Caiden's relationship. Although I wish they would talk to each other more. At one point, hiding their feelings from each other and avoiding talking about what was happening was annoying to me. I would prefer to fully observe the development of their feelings. Confessions of love surprised me a bit, as certainly did D's move after the fight with the villain. I'd rather be given more time to watch D and Caiden together in daily life, little intimates that would reveal the depth of their feelings more than jealousy and dramatic deeds.

But I like D and Caiden as a couple. It's just that this story left me feeling a little unsatisfied, and not in a good sense. Usually, in the case of romances, I don't like if the next book is about the same main characters. I already know the main characters are together and I don't want to read about them arguing, because that's what the second book usually is about. But in this case, I would love to read about D and Caiden again, to see more of them. More of their life together. For me, the epilogue could be a separate book.

The plot is fine. Maybe a little over the top and I didn't always understand the what is exactly the point of D and Caiden's mission, but it didn't cause me problems. There are enough twists here.

What bothered me, and it is definitely my preference, is that they are both involved in erotic situations with other people during the story. The book basically starts with a scene where D has sex with two men and then Caiden has a complicated relationship with another man as a part of the plot. I wouldn’t call it infidelity. But if, like me, you don't like reading about the main characters in intimate situations with other people, this may be bothering you.

I liked Caiden and D, but I'm not convinced by the other guys yet. Still, I will probably read more books in this series.

All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.

Remaining true to form, Charlie Cochet's new book is a fun action adventure romp. D is a dead man, figuratively. A few years ago there was an assassination attempt, and his old identity has been completely discarded. He now works as a Hitman for an elite group, assassinating murderers and criminals.

He finds himself reunited with Caiden, a CIA agent and one night flame. They have to work together to stop a rogue government agent.

Passionate and engaging, I was particularly hooked by feisty D.

I can't wait for the next book.

Argh I really thought this would be right up my street!

It just seemed so unrealistic - which yaknow, it is a fiction and a CIA novel so I should expect that, but after what seems like 1 week together the I love you’s were flying...

For me there was Zero chemistry - or at least zero build up, it was weird it was like they both had all the chemistry build up in their heads but the reader doesn’t get to see any of it on page until they’re together. The build up is the best part!

This one was engaging right from the start and kept on going! Most of the book wasn't "action packed" though both MCs were working the case but near the end - all hell broke loose! As this was the first book in this new series there's a bit of introduction about the agency and the work they are doing. I liked that it wasn't overwhelming. We got what we needed, there's still a "taste" for the next ones with also a nice glimpse to the other characters to be coupled in the next books! Can't wait for Si's book "Lips are Sealed"!

The book is told from both D and Caiden's POV. They were both betrayed 2 years ago resulting in Caiden's cover (as a CIA spy) being blown leaving him with a desk job - NOT what he bargained for.. and D – a mercenary himself – was killed (though as you can imagine he was somehow revived). While Caiden is quite upset with the state of his life, D though needed to change his identity is living THE life working for Locke and Keyes Agency.

Caiden Cardosa knew he wanted to be a spy since he was a little kid. He got his dream working as a CIA officer until his cover was blown in Vienna (not long after he met and enjoyed a steaming night with the mysterious Alvaro Montero). Returning to US soil he knew things are never going to be the same again. Working as an analyst is BORING and his life outside of work isn't different – living in a grim grey apartment and no love life to speak of..

Álvaro Montero was good at his job as a government assassin. It's not what he had in mind when he joined the army as a Ranger, but it seems he was cut perfectly for the job. Well, until he was killed.. There's an irony – a hit man being killed by one.. Though he WAS killed he was saved by "Alpha" who asked him to join his black op operation. It's not like he had a lot of options.. He was already considered dead so a new identity as Delta (or D as most call him) was enough for him. Especially since unlike his job under the government he felt he was truly being a part of the "Good Guys" - exposing people and operations and handing them to the authorities.

Legally D works for the "Locke and Keyes Agency" run by the sweet couple David Locke and Becky Keyes. The agency supposedly offer consulting, data analysis and such but it's just a front for black op operations they are doing under the codename "Alpha Orion". Though D has talked to "Alpha" enough in the past he still doesn't know who "s/he" is, or even if it's just one person. But what he DOES know is enough for him to want to keep doing what he is hired to do.

Caiden and Delta's paths cross again when Caiden is offered to finally uncover WHO was the guy who betrayed him in Vienna. He doesn't ask a lot of questions, mostly because he doesn't have who or when to ask but when he finds himself in front of Alvaro (Delta) he is NOT pleased. Well, neither is D for that matter. While their short time together was explosive, the way it ended and everything that happened shortly after left them more than reluctant to working together but as it seems the guy who uncovered Caiden's identity is also the guy who hired a hitman to "take care" of Alvaro so working together makes sense..

Their job is to find and then recover data from the Steward. The Steward is code name for someone who collects data of illegal activity. Personally, he does nothing with the data, but when asked by his client he uses it mostly to blackmail the person he's got incriminating data on. As it seems he has incriminating data on the guy who betrayed Caiden and D and as he is being blackmailed - now is the time to look for the data – as well as the betrayer. Easier said than done considering they have NO idea where the Steward stores the data. But as they get access to his house as a part of a renovating team they try to figure it out.

During their time together they get closer. It's easy to forget their differences and act upon their mutual attraction especially as they realize they are a good team together. Spending days and nights together they both realize they actually WANT more from one another but there are still secrets and half truths between them and when those are going to be revealed, well, the outcome might change everything. Also with both being pursued by The Stewards' wife and his security guy they know they SHOULD do it for the mission but making the other guy unhappy as well as jealous isn't making it easier as well..

Everything is blown apart (literally) when the guy who betrayed them suddenly appears. One of the guys is shocked to realize he actually KNEW the betrayer while the other realizes how significant his role actually was. But though it all there is also a love declaration because even before they knew all the gritty little details they knew that being a part is NOT an option anymore. They would have to find a way to resolve everything and STAY together.

I really enjoyed this one. It was fast paced and fun. The interaction between the two was fun even or maybe mostly when they were not getting along hehe Caiden was the more serious and down to earth while D was a lot of trouble but together they made it work. I enjoyed seeing them get closer though my only complaint about this book is the fact that I felt like their LOVE was quite insta-love. I got the attraction, the mutual interest, the fact they were a good team together, but there is a big difference between those to being truly in love. But well, I'm not going to fault this book for this fact as it was truly fun and engaging throughout.

Yep, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Until the next one.. (hopefully sooner rather than later!)

I love Charlie Cochet and this book was no different ... but I think it was not one of her best ones.
the story was good but the relationship development was not very smooth. the back and forth between them was a bit much especially with Ds attitude.
I missed also the real moments of connection between them without sex. also the revelation that they are in love with each other was a bit ill-timed.

nevertheless it was a good read and I am looking forward to the next book

4 stars.

Kept in the Dark started off with a bang and I was hooked! Loved every second of this novel to the point where I couldn't stop reading until I pretty much finished.

I love a good enemies to lovers romance and this was done good here. I loved the relationship between D and Caiden. The angst. The chemistry. It was all there and you could feel it. I also loved the action that came along with it. It made the story work really well together until the very last page.

I feel like I know who's book is next and if I'm right than I can't wait. It's one of those things where I might even enjoy that book more than this and I loved this one.

Lightning paced and filled with interesting characters and banter for dayssss, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

It wasn’t perfect with some frankly unbelievable scenarios but I went along with them because they were badass!

Also,The loving and “forever promises” were quite fast in coming as well but I didn’t mind them because I luuurved everything about the MCs(even though D frustrated me at certain points), and wanted them to get their HEA.

The other members of the squad, though a bit hastily introduced, were hilarious and I’m super interested in their books...also, Harrison and who is Alpha?! This series should be fun & exciting!!

I've been wanting to read more Charlie Cochet for a while and I picked this up on a whim.  I haven't read the original series this spins off of but it sounded really interesting and I couldn't pass it up.  I love m/m romantic suspense and especially if there's an enemies to lovers edge to the relationship.

I will say that while KEPT IN THE DARK has that enemies feel at first, that trope is quickly sidelined and I think of this more of a second chance romance.  A second chance at what they never got. I think that switch and the progression of their relationship was really fast and that's probably the thing I wasn't sold on with this book.  All of a sudden there's this deep love that almost came out of nowhere while they are working on an op together.  But I can't deny the chemistry that these two had.

That being said, this was a great read and I think this series has a lot of potential for being a fun RS.  Enough action and danger without it being overwhelming, a great crew of guys and side characters as well, lots of great banter.  All of this really kept me turning the pages.  I'm really curious about the rest of the members of the team and I can't wait for more books to come out. Oh and did I mention hot?  This was definitely steamy!
