Susan Schild writes heartwarming small- town love stories.
Susan is a wife, and a stepmother who enjoys weekend getaways with friends, reading fiction, and rummaging through thrift stores and antique stores for treasures like four dollar cashmere sweaters and amateur watercolor paintings. A dog lover, Susan is especially fond of Lab mix rescue dogs.
Susan and her family live in North Carolina where she is busy writing her next novel.
I think I’ll go slather myself with Ben Gay so my muscles won’t freeze up on me like the tin man.
Australians had been credited with inventing the black box flight recorder, the cochlear implant, and the electronic pacemaker. She groaned internally as she read on. Son of a biscuit. They’d also invented box wine. That was genius.
I hope you remember the girl you were, the one who rode bikes fearlessly, got dirty, and didn’t give a fig about how you looked.
“My legs and arms are white as rice, and I still have my winter weight.” Her thighs reminded her of rice pudding.
When she got back to their campsite, Charlotte was outside frying bacon on an electric skillet. Jenny sniffed. “Someone should make a perfume that smells like that.” “Men and dogs would just follow you around,” Charlotte said.
My Review:
Jenny was highly focused and working hard to get her resort fully operational but being a one-woman operation, she was anxious about balancing her money, time, and energy and was grateful to have her new love for support – but did she? Luke was called away on business to Australia and highly distracted by his new project during the rare phone connections. Luke was a kind and gentle man but he wasn’t much for discussing feelings and seemed to be as attentive and romantic as a frozen fish stick.
After reading several taut thrillers, I enjoyed the leisurely pace, real-world issues, subtle levity, rustic feel, and down-home flavors such as the name of the general store – Gus’s Gas-N-Git -, which was, smirk-worthy. While slow in pace, the storylines were easy to follow, realistic, wryly written, and chaste enough for my elderly mother’s church ladies' book club, which is indeed a rare find on my reading list. ;)
The previous installment was a drama-free slow-burn romance set against the backdrop of Christmas and a major renovation project. Now the renovation project is pretty much complete, the weather is warming up, the resort is open for business, and Jenny is finally settling in to a more comfortable life. She also has this sort-of long distance thing going on with Luke, the contractor that helped her renovate in the previous book. I say long distance because Luke lives far enough away to not see Jenny every day, but they are fortunate enough to be able to make mid-week dinners work.
Early in this story, Luke goes abroad for an extended work-related trip, and it stresses Jenny's routine. She feels strongly about their relationship, but she's having a hard time getting a feel for what Luke wants for the future. While Jenny continues to make improvements to the resort, she misses Luke. AND she sets out to try her hand at better marketing in an effort to bring more people to the resort all throughout the year.
I really like Jenny for her down-to-earth personality and the way she interacts with everyone she encounters. I like that she is willing to try out new things even though she may have to learn while she goes. Jenny learns new things like internet marketing and boating during this installment and it was fun to watch her perform just like any other regular inexperienced person would do. She maintains a great relationship with her friends and family. And she is honest about the impatience and frustration she feels with Luke gone away.
Even more than the romance, I loved the other parts of the story, including the day-to-day work around the resort. There are a ton of scenes on the page that include improvements to the property and cabins, and that fed my love for stories centered around renovation. Also on the page are the people staying at the resort and whatever activities they're up to. Some have come for workshops; others are staying there for regular vacations. I loved every single scene with these resort patrons and I hope the author continues to include them in the future.
The relationship between Jenny and Luke is a slower burn, so if you're looking for something steamy and fast-paced as far as romance goes, this isn't really what you're looking for. But if you want a relatable, steadily-paced romantic relationship, a great North Carolina lakeside setting, and all-around great character relationships, you may like this one as much as I do. (The two dogs and mini-horse have lots of page time!)

Sidenote: I almost had a fit when I got to the end of the story and saw the author's notation mentioning that the next Lakeside Resort book is out in May 2020! MAY 2020!!! So long from now!! GAH, I'm so impatient.
43 year old Jenny has recently inherited Lakeside Resort from her deceased father, Jax. She is working hard to juggle not only the business, her mom and stepdad who have come to stay for a few months, but also her newly formed love connection with Luke. Oh, yes, and you can't forget her charming pets, dogs Buddy and Bear, and a miniature horse, Levi!
This was my first book by this author, and I was automatically drawn in by her delightful, heartwarming writing style. This book read fine as a standalone, but since I felt like I missed out on key points of the story, it's probably better to start with #1. I would highly recommend this one for those looking for a wholesome, feel good, relaxing by a campfire/s'mores in hand kinda read. The descriptions of the campsite were vivid and made me wish I could spend a week there with girlfriends, wine glass in hand!
Location: Heron Lake, North Carolina

I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I love being able to pick up a book knowing that I have hours of sheer entertainment in front of me...and that’s just what I get when I open up a book written by Susan Schild! Summer at the Lakeside Resort takes us back to Heron Lake, North Carolina, and the cozy cabins that Jenny Beckett renovated in the first book of this series, Christmas at the Lakeside Resort. How I wish this was a real place, because I’d love to go there in real life! I felt like I was visiting with old friends, picking up where the first book left off, spending more time with Jenny, Luke, and Charlotte, as well as the dogs and miniature horse! This is a warm and cozy story, lighthearted and fun, but with just enough conflict and drama to keep the story interesting. Jenny is the kind of character that we are all rooting for; she’s relatable, kind, funny, and determined to be successful in life, business, and love. This is the perfect book for summer reading, endearing and sweet, with a beautiful setting and characters who are kindred spirits.
Susan Schild never fails to deliver a heartwarming love story with characters who are down-to-earth and so much fun to get to know!
I adored Christmas at the Lakeside Resort (I have a signed paperback copy--SQUEE!) and Summer at the Lakeside Resort is just as uplifting, fun, and informative--at times I found myself holding my breath as Jenny tries her hand at things she's never done (pull an RV behind a truck, drive a boat, etc.) and these things make the story come alive with reality.
I'm not into giving a play-by-play (you can read the blurb for that) but I can say the story flows nicely, I adore Luke and Jenny and hey, there's a miniature horse and two squishy dogs! I loved that Luke isn't your typical romance hero--he's a regular guy like most of us encounter, and Jenny is somewhat insecure which makes for a wonderful, heartfelt story.
I teared up at the end...I LOVED IT!
Nice job, Ms. Schild, and I'll be anxious to read the 3rd in the series next spring.
Jenny is an over 40s woman who is working hard to make a success of the campground that her Dad left her half completed when he died. Her dad always had big plans but rarely saw them to completion and the campground was just another example. Jenny and two friends worked to finish the cabins in time for Christmas in the first book in the series Christmas at the Lakeside Resort. Now it's March, the cabins are completed and she needs to figure out how to get those cabins filled for the summer months so that she can make enough money to live on. With the help of her best friend, Charlotte and her contractor, Luke, she works to come up with ways to make the resort successful. Luke is more than her contractor, he is also her boyfriend and even though there has been discussion about getting married, nothing seems to be happening. As Jenny struggles with keeping the cabins cleaned and making the visitors happy, she is having the time of her life.
It's wonderful to read a book with a main character over 40 who is still working to figure out their life and be successful. Jenny is a fantastic character - sometimes you feel sorry for her as she struggles with life and love and sometimes she makes you laugh out loud. I especially enjoyed how she used goggle to learn everything from how to catch fish to how to be interviewed for the newspaper to how to plant a garden. As she becomes more involved in the day to day running of the resort, her stress level increases until she realizes that it's ok to accept help from other people.
Note: this is book 2 in the Lakeside Resort series and you need to read this series in order to avoid confusion.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
How refreshing! A heroine who is actually working! A woman who thinks about more than her nails or how she looks in a bathing suit! Schilds has once again created a woman who is multi-dimensional and one who isn't counting on marrying a rich hunk to rescue her.
I like that we learn about building and running a lakeside resort along with Jenny and that we get to see occasional wins along with the requisite bumps in the road.
And when her mother and step-father come back into her life, there's an additional dimension that enriches the story.
The setting on a small lake in North Carolina rings with authenticity. I know because I grew up here. There's just enough Southern to spice up the story but not so much that it's distracting or tacky. (Tacky is something no southern girl ever wants to be.)
I look forward to each new book Susan Schilds writes. I just don't know how she keeps doing it and getting better with each one! I'm in line for the third in this latest trilogy!
I’m so caught up in Jen and Luke that it will be difficult waiting for their May wedding! I love Lakeside Resort and I feel at home reading about the adventures there.

📘📗📙My Review 📙📗📘
I have been waiting since Christmas to read this book. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book after reading and loving Christmas at the Lake Side Resort by this same author . Susan Schild’s new book “Summer at the Lakeside Resort” is another winner! I LOVED this book. I could not turn the pages fast enough. Susan takes us back to Heron Lake, North Carolina, and to the beautiful cabins that Jenny renovated in the first book of this series. Only now her mother and stepdad have moved in. This is a very heartwarming book with great characters. After everything Jenny has been through its hard for her to trust and take a chance she won't get hurt again. Does Jenny learn to trust Luke ? After doing all the work on the cabins can she find ways to keep resort up and running? Or will this be the end of her dream. Guess you are going to have to read it to find out. No spoilers here. Oh how I wish this was a real place, because I’d love to make a reservation and go there in real life! It sounds like such a beautiful place full of great people. And of course i will be all over Jenny's 3 adorable pets - 2 dogs and a lovable mini horse named Levi. It was so nice to read a story with characters that are my age. Instead of all of the characters being young, perfect, beautiful, and rich. If you are looking for a heartfelt read to add to your summer reading list look no futher this is the book for you. I was sad to once again say good bye. This was a really great read and I can’t wait for the next in the series..could you please write a little faster . 😂 I received a copy of the book from the the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: romance
I loved the previous book, and enjoyed this. I've had a couple of follow-on books recently, and I guess I'm coming round to the idea that actually what I want, what I enjoy best is the pre-romance, the story and struggles that gets folk together. Once they are together, sometimes I enjoy a sneak into what comes next but more often I just don't seem to get so engaged in the story. I enjoyed seeing The Boys, Jenny feels her boys are family, exactly the way I've always thought about my pets. ( My dog, Roxy, is now shrieking “A Pet!! You think I'm a pet??” I swear she thinks she's human. ) The resort is progressing, not without problems of course, and that made it so lifelike. Things do go wrong, I know, I'm still in temp accommodation because the 8-10 week renovation is now into about week 14 with another three or four to go. Uncover one issue, and three more pop up. I so felt for Jenny in the first book when this seemed to happen to her all the time. Now she's laid out all that money she needs to get the bookings in, but to do that she needs to spend more cash on attractions....cash she doesn't have. I didn't really feel the Luke issue, he's a good guy at heart and the commitment worry felt a bit forced, though of course there is his workaholic dad for history. People do often follow the role model set by parents rather than learn from it. It was a fun read, a light one but cemented my opinion that for me follow on books aren't really what I like best.
Stars: three, I enjoyed reading about Jenny and co, and seeing the resort progressing and for those who like reading follow on stories it will be a five, just a case of its me not the book. Reading tastes are so subjective.
SUMMER AT THE LAKESIDE RESORT is a delightful quick read and the second book to Susan Schild’s series. CHRISTMAS AT THE LAKESIDE RESORT should be read first in order to follow along. Schild writes about women in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s facing real issues in today’s world, and that’s what I like about her stories. This book is fun, romancey, heartwarming and deals with family issues. I enjoy her characters, especially Jenny, who inherits her father’s cabins on Lake Heron, North Carolina, as well as his Airstream camper. While new to entrepreneurship, she’s trying to rev up her business renting the cabins and keeping it afloat. She has a nice relationship with Luke, but he unexpectedly needs to travel to Australia to attend to business dealings, which turns her world upside down. He’s always there to guide and help her, but while gone, he’s not very attentive. She manages to handle things on her own with the assistance of her mom, Claire, stepfather, Landis, her BFF, Charlotte, and quirky campers Coy and Neecy, whose characters I also enjoyed. Jenny manages to grow her business, buys a new boat along with kayaks and canoes, learns how to sail and does all of this and educates herself without Luke’s help. She and Charlotte also take a much-needed camping trip with the Airstream, which they haul in Luke’s huge truck he’s left to Jenny while he’s gone. It’s another accomplishment she handled without him. Even though Jenny is gloomy and pines for him, Schild brings out Jenny’s strong and ambitious woman of today, which I admire. This is a very inspiring story, and yes, women can! I highly recommend this book!
Linda’s Book Obsession Reviews “Summer at the Lakeside Resort” by Susan Schild, Longleaf Press, May 15, 2019
Susan Schild Author of “Summer at the Lakeside Resort” has written an entertaining, and delightful novel. The Genres for this book are Fiction and Romance. Of course, I love the two big teddy-bear like dogs and the miniature pony that are part of the story. The author describes her characters as average people with problems, and likable. The story takes place back on Heron Lake, where Jenny Becket has her cabins. I appreciate the way the author describes the blue lake and wonderful grounds. This is the second book in the series, but can be read alone.
Jenny Becket is still adapting to her new business with the rental guest cabins. She is financially insecure and questions future needs. Right now as the summer approaches, Jenny would like to put a boat and other water equipment on the agenda. She and her friend Charlotte are trying to come up with ideas to get more people to visit. Jenny’s friend Luke, had to leave town on business for a few weeks and she misses him.
It certainly appears that at Lake Heron, this summer will have unpredictable events happen. This is a wonderful book about trust, second chances, family, friends, love and hope. I would highly recommend this book for those readers that enjoy an easy read with a happy ending.
Format: Kindle Edition Susan Schild has woven together a wonderful story in a perfect setting. Her descriptions are so vivid you are constantly drawing pictures in your mind, which is an important element of a book to me. If you enjoy a well developed story featuring strong women over 40, friends that help each other, close families, wisdom that only comes with age and believe in Fresh Starts then you will want to read this book! I fell in love with the Characters and found Jenny relatable in regards to her determination sprinkled with self doubt. Before I ever finished this book I was hoping for a sequel because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these Characters, The Lakeside Resort or the Rescue Animals. I wanted to know what the future would hold for them all. I found myself nodding in agreement with certain passages, laughing out loud at others and simply wishing the Resort was real and that I was friends with Jenny! I'm going to start calling Susan Schild "The Story Weaver". As an added bonus in the Kindle Edition there are some links to music and a recipe referenced. Thanks to Susan for writing about real women who are perfectly imperfect that we all can learn from and be inspired by!
I really liked the first book in this series and was hoping this second book would be as good and have found it is.
Over forty Jenny, has her whole world change, when things happen in her life and she finds she has to roll with all the changes.
She is learning as she goes on what she needs to do to get her resort up and running. Finding ways to get the cabins full. She learns to let others help her and to ask for help.
With the new man in her life, she is learning, like a lot of us with men. Luke shows how much he loves her in different ways that might not be the way she feels he should. She learns she needs to stand up for herself and let Luke know he needs to pay attention to her.
Looking forward to my third visit to the Lakeside Resort.
This was my second book from this author, the first book was really good and that carried forward into the next book of the series. I love reading about my home state, I always loved exploring it. I love the concept of a woman coming of age making something of herself and striving to make a living doing something that she loved. The characters that come in and out of the resort each have their own stories to tell, and I enjoy getting to know them. I can't wait to read the next book in this series and see where the storyline will take me. I would definitely recommend this book to others.
The second book in the series Lakeside Resort by Susan Schild is just as enjoyable as the first! Are you looking for a book that the main female character is not in her 20's? Do you enjoy reading books that at times might have you laughing out loud? Then you need to buy both books in the series and chisel out some time to escape into the life of Jenny and the beautiful Lakeside Resort.
I LOVED this next story that takes place at the Lakeside Resort!! While this book can be read as a stand-alone, I enjoyed being back with the characters I met in “Christmas at the Lakeside Resort” as Jenny deals with the quirky guests and her up and down romantic relationship! Looking forward and hoping for more adventures at the Lakeside Resort! Don’t pass up this fun read!
I loved catching up with Jenny, Luke and their furry friends. The story is warm and fun, with great characters that keeps the story interesting. Jenny is a woman learning new skills, determined to make a success of her venture. Susan always delivers a heart-warming story with laughs along the way. Great summer reading! I'm always impatient for the next book! Definitely recommend!!
Summary: After her initial burst of guests and and enthusiasm, Jenny is worried about making a success of the Lakeside Resort. Her background was teaching, not property management or marketing. She is going to need some clever ideas and more than a small amount of cash to ensure a steady stream of lodgers.
Luckily, Jenny has some great friends with a variety of skills. One of her friends is a super bargain hunter, which helps stretch Jenny’s thin budget. A few more friends help her build a laundry facility, complete with flower boxes so it matches the cottages. One of her frequent residents hosts a writer’s workshop and another suggests a yoga retreat.
As the ideas flow and the guests respond, Jenny starts to relax a little — except for one major problem. Her boyfriend, Luke, flies off on an extended business trip to Australia, leaving her to deal with some major headaches — like getting a large, expensive boat back to the resort when she doesn’t know a thing about boating. Jenny also worries about her relationship with Luke, as the months drag by and he seems increasingly distant. But with the support of her friends and family, Jenny knows that no matter what happens with Luke, she won’t be alone.
Comments: Bright and cheery, Summer at the Lakeside Resort is the perfect getaway. I’d love to vacation there! It reminded me of some summer vacations with my parents. For a couple of years, my parents booked a tiny one-bedroom pine cabin near the beach. It was one of several on a dirt road. As an only child at the time, vacations could get a bit lonely, but these cottages always had other families. The feeling of temporary community made those vacations particularly happy and memorable.
The novel’s setting isn’t the only thing that made me feel relaxed and comfortable. The characters are older, very down-to-earth and relatable. The dogs are also amusing, but that miniature horse is absolutely adorable!
With continuing social isolation during Covid-19, I’m looking for books that take me to other places. Susan Schild’s novel was a perfect armchair getaway to a very happy, sunny place.
Recommended for readers of Light Romance and Happy Fiction.

I had read book 1 of this series as one of my December Christmas reads. In it Jenny completed renovation of the resort in time for Christmas. I found all the characters endearing and so I was delighted to find the next three books on Kindle Unlimited. In this story, Jenny works on marketing and planning and missing Luke as he leaves her for business. On her own for two months, getting summer recreation items and imagining Luke falling for a other woman while he's half way around the world, makes Jenny nervy but still determined to make her resort a success. I love the witty dialogue and Jenny's musings to herself and all of the characters are spot on fabulous. Her mama Claire and husband Landis are introduced as new characters. I'm really enjoying this series.
After reading the first book in this series, I was really looking forward to this second one, and it didn't disappoint. Jenny is having to learn so many new things in order to make the Lakeside Resort a going concern, including how to drive and dock a boat! I enjoyed going along with her on this journey of discovery. Like Jenny, I was disappointed that Luke was out of the country for a lot of it, but Jenny made good use of her time.
This is my second time reading this Fantastic author and must say she has come up with an outstanding.story upon which to write many more stories! Keep up the great work! Looking forward to reading the next chapter in the life.of Luke, Jenny,Charolete, and the Boys at the Lakeside Resort! To me you.are in the class with authors like Fannie Flag and Fern Michaels!!!
Love this series! Enjoy reading about strong women that are independent and not afraid to tackle challenges on their own, but still realize it's okay to accept help from friends and family. This author is an excellent writer but REALLY needs a proofreader or editor. This is the second book of hers that I have read and it's very disappointing to spend money on a book that has so many typos and grammatical errors. Author should ask for ARC readers at the very least.
Jenny put her heart and soul in rejuvenating the camp ground. Between her commitment to the camp ground and her relationship with Like , things started going awry. Luke getting into the all work an no time for Jenny, he was falling into old habits. A vacation with a dear friend helped and surprise.... when she got home.... surprise...Luke showed up an d confessed no more overworking....loved the ending....
Love love these books awesome great , happiness finding yourself dealing with life happiness love and family . Wish I could go to the cabin and stay myself . I just feel like I belong there. AMUST READ AND YES THAT GOOD. CANT HARDLY WAIT FOR NEXT BOOK.
This is a light read that transports you to the cabins. The characters are relatable. The storyline was plausible. I am looking forward to hearing more about the characters in the next instalment. Sweet, simple and allowed me to relax as my imagination took me to the lake and the natural surroundings.
