Proper Scandals #1

A Proper Scandal

Rate this book
Grace Sinclair has been callously cast out of her home. And though taken in as an orphaned child by the vicar and his wife, her unsurpassed beauty makes it impossible for her to remain in the vicar’s household—with two daughters of their own about to enter Society, the vicar and his wife see Grace as nothing but competition. Thankfully, Grace’s estranged Aunt Bell has agreed to take her in to her home in London. But Grace soon learns her situation has just gotten much worse.

It takes only a moment’s acquaintance for Grace to ascertain that her aunt has married a detestable rake. And Aunt Bell, recognizing the danger of having her lovely niece too near her husband, gives Grace an ultimatum: the young woman has two weeks to find a man to marry, after which she will be turned out. With no experience in the art of attracting a husband, Grace quickly realizes that a worthy suitor might not be so easy to ensnare.

Grace is in quite a mess! I loved her tenacity despite her discomfort with her circumstances. She desperately misses her parents, but realizes that nobody is there to save her, she must make the best of it and choose the path that will determine how the rest of her life turns out. She has her sights set on Nate, and even though he is determined to never be taken advantage of by a scheming woman again, he can't resist her sweet personality and genuine compassion. They had a fun meet-cute that set the stage for the informal banter they enjoy for the rest of the book. I loved the contrasts in the characters and story that makes them question what is real, what are everyone's secrets, and how on earth is everything going to turn out?! Strong characterization and the steady pace of the interesting plot made this a book I couldn't put down! Highly recommend!!!

SO MUCH FUN!!! This is not your normal same ol' regency romance, this book is fun. I loved sweet, stubborn, blunt Grace! Could there be a better character! She was so great. Nate was just perfect for her. There romance was such a whirlwind of fun. There is some subject matter that could have made this a fairly dark book, but the author did such a great job of giving it levity and keeping it light. This was different then her first novel and I am so glad this author can think outside of a formula. So happy I found her books!! Just really loved this one and I'm going to have to read it again soon. This is a proper romance with a bit of heavy subject matter of attempted rape. This is something I would still give my teens to read.

Just a fun story. Enjoyed it the second time around too:}
6-24-24I listen to this on audio. The reader was good I just didn't like the voice that she had for the leading man. It's always hard to do justice to these men when you're a woman reader. But all the other voices were awesome. Just really love this story.

This was such a charming book! I wondered by the title how it would turn out, what with it being a "proper" scandal and all. But I was utterly charmed by Grace, our heroine and the many adventures and scandals she found herself in. Especially her initial meeting with Nate Barton, our hero.

I giggled many times at Grace's antics. Maybe because I feel like she and I are similar in many ways. Not necessarily her "scandalous ways" but her personality. Ok, I put scandalous in parantheses because she doesn't know how to be anything but proper and watching her attempts to flirt with Nate was very humorous.

Grace finds herself in London, living with her aunt and her recent(ish -by a couple years) husband and his daughter Georgina. Grace is an orphan and had been living with the vicar and his wife after the death of her parents several years prior. But she finds that she must move on and upon arrival at her new home, discovers she will have to be quick on her feet as well as secure a marriage quickly if she wants to remain safe. (yes I'm being vague on purpose) ;-)

There were many secrets and twists throughout this story that I felt added to the whole of the story and had me enjoying it even more than I initially thought I would. Especially every scene with Grace and Nate in it. From the misunderstanding of identity, to the garden party, to the parasol malfunction, to Mrs. Stetson and her antics, to a fast paced horse ride at the end, and the scandal of arguing on the street in front of everyone. Oh, how I loved these two!

There are a couple other characters whom I didn't care for. A couple whom I wasn't sure if I would care for them and I came to find them charming and quite entertaining...as well as the possibility of a future story hidden in there. Hmmmmm... I can't wait to see what Esther Hatch is working on next for us reading fans! This is a delightful read that I highly recommend picking up and enjoying! My oldest daughter discovered it was on my Deseret Bookshelf subscription and she listened to it before I was even halfway done with it. She had some big smiles and giggles and was constantly asking me what part I was at. Then she'd give me a knowing smirk and say to me to hurry up faster and finish it! Silly girl!

Content: Clean. Some mild innuendos but nothing graphic. A character is kind of creepy and follows Grace around making her feel uncomfortable. An attempted attack on Grace by that character but nothing happens and it is not a graphic scene. Some kissing and talk about marital relations but nothing in detail.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Sadly, this was just a miss for me. It’s very much a Victorian-lite type of read. The dialogue, wording, behaviors and actions of the characters just came across very modern to me, it really took me out of the story and made it hard for me to enjoy. I had a hard time getting into it and was disappointed that the historical aspects were so lacking and didn’t give me the historical feel I look for when reading in this genre. I gave up around 25%

I’m glad I read If You’ll Have Me first, because I’m not sure I would’ve given this author another shot after this sorry excuse for a book.

I’m bailing at 45% because I can’t take it anymore. The heroine is insufferable; she keeps throwing herself at the hero even though it’s clear it makes him uncomfortable. She’s trying to trap him, and she’s so obvious, clumsy, and pathetic about it that I’m slowly cringing to death.

On top of that, her beauty is mentioned in every other sentence, and it seems to be the only reason the hero even acknowledges her existence. And if he’s so shallow that he’d fall for her only because of that, I don’t want to read about him either.

Sadly this book wasn't for me.
The writing style was very abrupt, the story itself was all over the place and confusing.
Grace's character was a mess, she was naive and demure but tried again and again to seduce Nate, leaving him no choice but to marry her. How she readily went with her aunt and uncle's plan to trap him into marriage was disgusting (more so as she valued his character).
The characters were not drawn well and there was no visible character development.
The confusing interactions between Grace and Nate were very frustrating.

First, I love the cover of this book. Second, the title is interesting--how can a scandal be proper? Once you get to know Grace you'll understand. Grace is an utmost beauty, most likely a diamond of the first water, but because she was orphaned and spent the last 6 years living with the vicar and his family she doesn't know the proper ways of London Society, how to converse with men, or how to flirt. Her lack of knowledge about these things leads to many awkward and sometimes hilarious incidents. It also impedes her ability to get a husband in the short time she's been given by her aunt and uncle.

Poor Grace--it seems she can't win for losing. She's forced out of the vicar's home because the vicar and his wife are afraid with her beauty she'll take all the men's attentions and their daughters won't be able to find husbands. Thus she's sent to live with her aunt only to find her aunt's new husband is a rake who owes money to everyone, and he's going to use Grace's beauty to do away with one of his debts that's due. Grace's first meeting with Nate is funny, and her first attempt at flirting with him is hilarious, as is the parasol & hat incident at the garden party.

Grace is sweet, and has been shuffled from one place to another--all she wants is to belong to a family. Nate is such a gentleman, but he was deceived and hurt so he's very protective of his heart, although Grace seems to be able to crack the wall he's built around it. She's unlike any woman he's met in London--she's smart, speaks her mind and is truly interested in his railway project.

I liked Nate's mother and that she and Grace both enjoyed polishing the silver. Who would've thought?! I liked Grace's Aunt Bell and how her life turned out in the end. Oh, and Mr. and Mrs. Stetson--such a cute couple. Of course there's at least one awful character everyone hates and we cheer when they get their comeuppance. For all the formalities in Society, a woman really had to watch out which men she befriended back then. I found this to be a lighthearted read mostly because of Grace's antics.

Thank you to Covenant Communications via NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. All thoughts expressed in my review are my own.

Beauty can't give you everything in life, as Grace comes to discover. Unbelievably gorgeous, she's an orphan and has been asked to leave the vicar's home to allow for his daughters to find a match. Her aunt takes her in, but the situation there is dreadful. Her only option is to marry, which is easier said than done.

Grace is utterly adorable! She doesn't know the first thing about flirting and her attempts made me laugh out loud. Her first encounter with Nate was so hilarious, yet charming at the same time, and I couldn't stop smiling (and swooning) as they kept running into each other, especially with Grace's bumbling efforts at snagging herself a match. She definitely isn't comfortable with her situation, but she spares nothing in her endeavors to find her place in society--happy and secure, freedom to be herself, and free from annoying rakes.

I was completely enchanted with this tale and didn't want to put it down. I loved the whimsical characters (and even enjoyed hating the slimy ones) and the story line was a pure delight. This author has a fun writing style that really captured my attention and didn't let go.

A Proper Scandal wasn't anything like I expected. The plot was not only unique but fun and delightful. Due to her unideal situation, Grace finds herself having to woo a proposal from a stoic stranger in two weeks, a task made more challenging when her victim is a man who has sworn off women. Due to her persistence and his reluctantly being drawn to her despite his best intentions, the two repeatedly find themselves in one unexpected situation after another.

Grace was adorable! I loved her. She was such a sweet and innocent character. Her bumbling flirting attempts were awkward and hilarious, yet charming. I also really liked Nate. He was such a good man doing his best to be honorable, despite the near-scandalous situations Grace repeatedly puts him in. I loved how he both tried to avoid Grace and couldn't help but want to be near her and protect her. I loved their banter and their gradually deepening relationship.

The plot was thoroughly engaging. I didn't anticipate the plot twist halfway through the story, which was a lovely surprise, and it made an already interesting plot even more so. The only thing that hindered my enjoyment was all the unwanted male attention Grace frequently receives (especially from her uncle) as it made me really uncomfortable. Other than that, everything else about the story was super cute, fun, and thoroughly delightful.

‘A Proper Scandal’ is about beautiful young Grace Sinclair who has spent her teen years with the vicar and his wife after her parents’ early passing. She has reached marriable age and is unceremoniously shuffled off to an aunt and uncle’s home who also have a daughter that is pretty much in the same husband-hunting boat. The uncle is a creepy letch that has ruined the family finances with his gambling debts. The only way to solve his money woes is to basically sell Grace to a particular target. Creepy uncle must force Grace to do her part in trapping the one he has chosen.

I really liked Esther Hatch’s first book, and this one started out promising, but I found the whole mix-up with the two cousins with the same names very confusing. When it got to that whole fiasco I had questions, things that didn’t make enough sense to me to understand that part of the plot. (It could be just me; there are not enough reviews yet to see if I was the only one that found it confusing.)

There are bright spots in the story, but it is not a keeper for me. However, I won’t give up on author Esther Hatch as I think she has much promise. ‘The Roses of Feldstone’ was very good!

DNF - pg. 100 (about 45%)

Not for me.

Although I sympathized with Grace because men constantly tried to take advantage of her and she was placed in a difficult position, I could not get on board with her trying to ensnare Nate and force him into marriage. Ultimately, her character was lacking to me - she went from trying to catch Nate, then trying to prove to him she wasn't a wanton despite acting like it, and then trying to be a seductress and not minding if she and Nate were caught in a compromising position. It just didn't make sense morality-wise, and I found it hard to believe she was a person of integrity. To me, the premise kind of marred her character and I could only desire an alternative solution for her problems.

I did like Nate's character, but I didn't understand why he was so drawn to Grace, especially when he discovered she was trying to entrap him. On top of that, I didn't find the story and their interactions to be romantic or charming. In fact, I had more of a desire for them to be apart, not together.

I much prefer Manor for Sale, Baron Included to this book by the same author. Unfortunately, A Proper Scandal just wasn't for me. 🌟🌟

I love it when I find a great book that I don’t want to put down. This was definitely one of those! I loved everything about it from page one. The characters were amazing, the plot was perfect, and the little trains in each chapter were adorable. And I can’t even tell you how much I love the cover!

Let’s start with Grace. She’s gone through some hard times. Her parents died, leaving her to live in the vicarage in her town. But now it’s time for her to move on. One thing about Grace is that she just wants to have a place for just her. She’s been removed from her home by the man who inherited her father’s estate. The vicar and his wife wanted her to move on. She just wants to be loved.

It’s a bit ironic how she escapes the crazy man on the train only to be in her uncle’s household. I loved this aspect of the plot. For Grace, it’s kind of just one unfortunate event after another. And she must work to get herself free of them.

That’s where Nate comes in. I loved Nate. He’s a gentleman, even when Grace is not quite acting as a lady ought. I loved his humor. And the way he goes out of his way to watch over Grace, even when he has no idea why.

This book is amazing! Make sure to go grab your own copy. It’s a perfect summer read.

Beautiful inside and out! Both Nathaniel & Grace are gracious, principled & conscientious individuals. She has frustratingly found herself at the mercy of her guardians since the early death of her parents. No matter who they are, her life has not been her own. Finding herself in a situation that goes against all of her inner morals, it is no surprise that she cannot bring herself to follow through - without confiding in Mr Nathanial Barton to some degree.

A man of gentleman standing, and heading up a newer faster way of railway building - Nate is heavily focused on attracting investments for his business. He has no time nor the inclination to become involved in the marriage scene, that London is so famed for. A chance meeting on a train station with a beautiful young lady will turn his carefully orchestrated world upside down.

I loved everything about this story. Fresh & original plot line mixed with a carefully detailed story. There is none of the skipping and jumping around, and it keeps you engaged as the reader.

Esther Hatch has yet again, captured the imagination perfectly and beautifully.

I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book & then proceeded to purchase my own paperback copy. I love the matt texture and the cover artwork. This is my honest review.

A wonderful, sweet story. Grace is an excellent character - I love her yearning for independence, for the love of a family and for a home, as well as her pragmatic approach to things and her appreciation of a hard worker. It certainly is quite amusing to see her as a self-conscious and upright girl trying to go along with a rather devious plan. The predicaments it puts her in and the completely understandable confusion on the part of Nate make for some funny moments. Her situation is truly dire, though (her uncle is vile) so it makes it exciting as she tries to make Nate understand. I'm only so frustrated it takes him so long!

A very good read, and makes for a very pleasant afternoon.

I am shedding happy tears right now because I LOVED THIS BOOK! Wowza. It took me by surprise but it was an absolute JOY! It made me feel literally all the feels. I laughed and cried and got mad and then swooned so hard my heart about burst out my chest!

I just loved how persistent Grace was with trying to ensnare Nate and he wasn't falling for her tricks. But yet he couldn't stay away! But gosh those two were ADORABLE together! I love how it felt like we got to see more of their relationship play out towards the end than we normally do in some Regency book. While the conflict about killed me, I was just so happy with how everything turned out. The end was PRECIOUS and made me all weepy!!!! This was everything I needed. It was PERFECT!

I’m blown away. This story is a mega-winner. The plot, characters, and conflict are complicated and multi-layered. It’s not your typical, dry Regency romance. Grace Sinclair is sent to live with her aunt and step-uncle in London. All she wants is a family, since her parents died 6 years ago. She wants to be loved and accepted for who she is, not her sizable dowry. But when a terrible man on the train ride to London makes overt advances (after learning about her dowry), she strikes up a conversation with a stranger, calling him Uncle, to escape the man’s less than honorable intentions.

Nate Barton is attracted to the beautiful woman who uses him to escape another man at the train station while she waits for her real uncle and aunt to arrive, but he’s been betrayed by a beautiful woman before and has no use for women. Though of noble birth, he works with a railroad laying tracks and doesn’t need a distraction. But when circumstances throw the two together days later, and the beautiful Grace tries to get him alone to compromise him and force his hand to marriage, he refuses to succumb to her charms. She will not win this game. He knows a woman like her could never love him for himself, and he won’t be played again.

I won’t give more of the story, because it is so delicious you need to experience each twist and turn of the plot for yourselves without being warned. But I read it in 2 days, though I had given myself a week to get through it. To me, that shows the beauty and brilliance of this story. The author basically hijacked me and held me ransom until the end. And I have Stockholm syndrome and will applaud my literary hijacker’s skill and authority. Bravo, Ms. Hatch. Thanks for kidnapping me and taking me along for Grace and Nate’s marvelous ride.

A PROPER SCANDAL is definitely the proper title for this story. It's full of almost scandals as the heroine tries to have some control over her life and find safety. Romance readers who like their stories heavy on the romance will enjoy this one.

Grace was a really fun character. She is sweet, smart, and beautiful, but also quite naive. I had to laugh at some of the dialogue as well as some of the predicaments she gets herself into. The scene with the hat and parasol was probably one of my favorites from the book. Hilarious and swoon worthy at the same time. I loved Nate! He was a fabulous leading man and I loved how he interacted with Grace. Together, they made an entertaining couple. They faced some difficult things and when they did, that's when I felt my emotions engage. There was heartache and distrust, but thank goodness there was a happily-ever-after in the end.

Having read this author's last book and most historical romance from this publisher, this story surprised me a little. I wasn't quite expecting it to push the line with the romance so much. It's still clean, but I think because I started it with different expectations, that threw me a little. I also didn't quite buy the urgency and the way things played out for Grace, particularly that her cousin and aunt didn't confide in her more and that she went from a proper young lady to someone who would ask inappropriate questions and push scandal so easily.

In the end, was it what I wished for? I enjoyed this. I would have liked more development and not quite so heavy on the romance, but I really liked the characters and it was definitely an entertaining read. Recommended to romance fans.

Being new to the proper romance genre, I'm finding that each book I read is showing me pretty quickly what I prefer in these stories. Unfortunately I don't think this author writes ones that are super appealing to me. This was a ⭐⭐⭐ for me, and the one I read prior was a DNF. Dialogue is one of the most important aspects of a book, and I really need *period* dialogue in proper romance, and this is just not a main focus of her writing style. There were also other modern aspects to the plot or the main character's actions that I just found to be unbelievable for the time. LOTS of readers like her books though so this is just my opinion - see for yourself! 😘 it's a very cute book if you're not distracted by the things I mentioned!
TW: assault

Spoiler:
I also thought the Uncle was way too creepy for the genre. Idk...he was straight up weird and some of the other reactions from men were not what I've come to expect from this genre or type of book. Maybe I'm placing too many expectations on the content, but in all honesty I was grossed out in a big way by the Uncle and the guy early on that she had to defend herself against.

I would have also liked to have seen a deeper feeling regarding how she was always forced to move or people always left her. There was great emotion that was just right there, but not quite fully explored for a 4 star or higher IMO.

What a charming historical!

I really enjoyed this story and the way the relationship developed between Grace and Nate. Grace is at a crossroads in her life. Her parents are both gone and the family she's been staying with has arranged for her to move in with her uncle and his wife. Grace tries to make the most of her new situation but she soon discovers it's not the best, although she does have allies.

Rather than waiting for her fate, Grace takes it into her own hands and decides Nate is the man for her. Nate is a gentleman and rebuffs Grace's advances, and that make for some humorous situations. Fortunately, they see each other for who they are, and are able to get past the problems.

This is a great story with an original take and I highly recommend it. Very good writing too, and you all know how picky I am about good writing.

Беше наистина Long Journey.

From the turn of the first page, A Proper Scandal by Esther Hatch is an absolute delight. This story is about a young woman who is in a not so good situation and is forced into finding and catching a husband within a couple of weeks. This speed in which this must take place is in part because of the main character’s uncle’s advances. The way this situation proceeds is charming, funny, and engaging. Readers will love the personality of the characters as they work through this frustrating situation. This is a fun, easy, and light story that readers will thoroughly enjoy!

This was a cute romance set in the Victorian era in London, 1843. It was a quick read but I felt like the misunderstandings went on a bit too long. Grace is beautiful and kind, but awkward as she tries to obey her evil uncle and compromise Nate Barton into marriage. Nate was a proper, yet stubborn gentleman which was part of the fun.

Finally read my first Esther Hatch! I’ve seen her books over the last couple years and have been meaning to read them. It was a very original & swiftly paced read. Very fun. My main complaint is that it reads very modern for the historical time. If the verbiage was more true to era I think it would have enhanced my reading experience. This is a very cute read with an original plot -which I really appreciate! I’m definitely left wanting to read more by this author.💞

I read this ages ago, and was in the mood to revisit it. Holy cow, it's such a fabulous story!!! I love the strong, yet kind main character Grace. I love how she falls in love and all the complications that go along with it!!!! Read this. Can't wait for more from Esther Hatch!!
