Sara's on the run and she's found the perfect place to hide.....

Sara Robinson – gambling addict, liar, thief – lived a hand-to-mouth existence in a dingy flat in London. Now she's running for her life after the chance to make some easy money goes horribly wrong. She has three things which might save her - a passport in someone else’s name, a ticket to Australia and a suitcase full of cash.

Sara finds herself the custodian of a crumbling Victorian mansion known as Crowlands House, once a children’s home in the rural town of Ararat. At first, the airy property seems cool and welcoming in the harsh Australian sunlight. It’s a private haven where Sara can forget about what happened in London, and a place to escape the hostile local townsfolk.

But there are things in the house that aren't quite right. And Sara can't ignore them forever.

The doors that won't stay open, the scratching sounds in the walls at night, the objects that disappear only to reappear in a room she has never even been in.

And then the children come out to play - one by shadowy one.....

Sara begins to delve into the mysteries of the mansion and uncovers a secret so gruesome it refuses to stay buried. But the evils of the past will do anything to keep the dead silent, and Sara must find a way to survive the horror that still resides at Crowlands House.

The crows in the gum tree wait patiently for the souls of the dead to leave the house, but he will never set them free.

THE CROWLANDS
by T.M. Creedy

No spoilers. 2 1/2 stars.Sara has a problem. A gambling problem. She is estranged from her family and has trouble making ends meet because of it...

Sara suddenly sees a way to start a new life by swapping identities with a murdered girl also named Sara and take the dead girl's booked flight to Australia...

Stealing the other girl's ID and a great amount of her cash, Sara arrives in Australia to house sit for an extended period of time...

She soon finds...

The isolated three story house she is sitting was once a children's hospital years ago, and it is now haunted by dead children...

Help us...
He hurts us...

Sara must find a way to set the children's spirits free...

This was a very slow-moving and predictable tale. I was so bored with the vast majority of the story that I could barely finish reading it, and the ending was pure nonsense.

Sara lives her life on a paycheck to paycheck basis. Gripped by a gambling addiction that causes her to waste hundreds of pounds gambling in a single sitting, Sara doesn’t know how she’s going to pay her bills this month when an advertisement catches her eye. That one phone call catapults Sara into escaping to rural Australia under a new identity. But the Crowlands House has a dark past, and that evil refuses to remain buried.

This is one of the best horror books I’ve ever read. The entirety of the book has an eerie feel to it where something just isn’t right. There are twists and turns in the darkness. As a whole, it’s a good story. Well written and attention grabbing from the first page to the last. It is an independent novel, so there are a few more typos than normal, but they aren’t distracting. If anything, my only complaint is that it wasn’t longer. The end felt a little rushed, where everything was just wrapped up so quickly with two separate storylines ending one right after the other by pure coincidence. Highly recommend.

So I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across this author/book, and since fall is right around the corner I've been anxious to find some good horror reads. The Crowlands did not disappoint! I read this in just a couple days and couldn't pull myself away from it. It was well written (even though I'm American and had to look up a lot of the British terms used in this book), the characters were developed and likable, and certain parts of the story had me guessing up until the very end (not going to spoil them here).

If you're looking for a good supernatural/horror read, try this one out!

A MUST READ!

I downloaded this book yesterday afternoon and was hooked from the start! The attention to detail is incredible, and as the story unfolded I couldn't wait to find out how it was going to end. Highly recommend this to anyone, but make sure you have time to read it all as you won't be able to put it down!

If you are looking for a good ghost story that will make you question the how many are present around you, The Crowlands will meet that need. T. M. Creedy is relatively new as an author, but is already writing like a veteran. Sara Robinson is struggling as a gambling addict. With a desperate need to pay the rent, she takes in a weekend boarder. This changes her life forever and now she is on the run. Taking on someone else identity may not have been the answer as she finds she is house sitting a mansion haunted by the children of a wicked time in history. She wonders if the infamous Dr. Silas Baldwin is still in residence also and how she can free the children’s spirit.

This novel hits home for me as the children in The Crowlands were often those with Down Syndrome. Though this is just fiction, harming these innocent children is horrendous. T. M. Creedy grabs the reader and hold you as the story of this house unfold. The wickedness and suspense within these pages are gripping. I loved the ending as it revealed many answers, but the reader wonders if there will be more from Sara in future novels. Overall, loved it! Not original in plot, but unique in how it was delivered. This is an author to watch.

A spooky read for ghost lovers.

The Crowlands is a good haunted house novel. The main character is on the run and thinks she's found a great hiding spot to lay low for a while. She soon learns the things in the house are more terrifying than the people looking for her.

This book is awesome! It's one of the best ghost stories I've ever read, it's so believable in the way it's written. The Crowlands appears vividly in my mind, the Australian sun and warmth, the cats, the ute, all of it. When having a break from reading my mind is full of Sara and what is going to happen next. I haven't felt so excited reading a book in a long time. I felt really satisfied with the ending. Nothing was predictable, the author made sure that things concluded in her way, that the whole story from beginning to end was interesting and fresh.

I awarded Two Stars for this book, the first being all I felt it was worth, and the second as a sort of token apology to myself for finishing it. Sadly, this just didn't do a thing for me. The utterly improbable storyline, shallow two dimensional characters, and general lack of haunting in a so-called 'Ghost Story' was a complete let-down. I am used to writing that engages me, not makes me want to stop reading. I admire anyone who has actually written and had a book published, but I won't be looking for any more by this author.

Sorry, but if you are looking for good ghost stories, look elsewhere. As an antidote and curative, I am currently reading "Full Throttle" by the amazing Joe Hill. Read ANYTHING he has written if you want a good ghost read, especially "Heart Shaped Box", or, if you simply need a good read... you will find that there's a world of difference between that, and The Crowlands.

I really don't like leaving negative reviews, but I felt I should be honest and express my view of this book, as to do otherwise would be unfair to the experience of reading it.

This is an awesome read, a page turner, a heart stopper and everything else in between, it’s a well-balanced book with a mix of humor, sadness and sheer terror, the house was a true horror indeed! The book is very supernatural in nature, and it will have you gripped throughout. It is full of surprises, you are literally hit with a bullet on every page. If you are not into horror stories, I do not advise reading this book because it will have you terrified and scared to turn the lights off at night! I really enjoyed the way the author was capable of capturing the fear that the characters felt, you truly went on a journey with each of the characters. I will definitely be reading more books by this author, so I am hoping that they write another book soon. I highly recommend this book!

I tagged this as horror, although I’m not sure that’s exactly the right category—supernatural suspense thriller would be closer, because I didn’t find it particularly scary. Eerie, yes, but most of the terrifying parts came courtesy of humans, not ghosts.

My only real complaint, the only thing that kept this from being 5 stars for me, was that the beginning and very end didn’t seem to really fit the story. I suffer from the same thing in my writing, so I recognize it; you know your plot, but how to get your heroine there and out again seem to be the hardest parts.

The best part of the beginning part of the book was the pretty realistic depiction of , even a type that’s not usually considered to be dangerous as other forms of . I think that subplot might have resolved a little too easily once the main character got to Australia, but sometimes a complete new start is considered a good treatment for those situations, as regular triggers get removed.

Living in a haunted house would probably hit the mental ‘reset’ button, as well.

I think my favorite part of this was how Sara reacted to the first ghosts encountered. Her decisions on how to react to the supernatural events around her, and to react calmly and kindly until she knew what she was dealing with, was...charming? That’s not the right word, but I’m not sure what is. She treated the situation as it was simply another part of her new situation, rather than something to send her screaming into the hills.

And I really loved how the final battle with the main antagonist was handled. For most of the book I kept thinking, “well, why don’t they just....?” Because normally in a book, you have to assume that every piece of information you’re given has meaning, but I’ve noticed a lot of what I’ve been reading lately seems to leave loose ends hanging about. I was beginning to be afraid that would be the case here, that a good set up would be wasted (or a red herring). Luckily, Chekov’s gun did go off in the 3rd act, and all was well.

The ending was open enough that it could, technically, leave room for a sort-of sequel, or at least a continuation of some of the characters. But it felt more like a natural end to Sara’s story, a transition point that didn’t require a sharply defined finish. She is at peace with her she is at the end, and the reader needs to decide to be as well.

This has been my first ever ‘horror’ reading experience and I have to say it was fantastic. I usually tend to avoid horror books as I prematurely assume that they won't give the same effect as a movie does. But oh how wrong I was. In fact, I would say that it probably had a bigger effect than movies as you imagine the settings and scenes yourself. I read this book incredibly fast and even though I was desperate to find out what happened in the end I was quite disappointed that it had finished. It's safe to say that I will definitely be reading more of these books in the future.

Wow, I could not get this book out of my head!!! What a ride!!
I loved the vivid descriptions of the house in Australia and all the characters Sara encounters when she stays there. The ghosts were both creepily scary and heartbreakingly sad. I thought the ending was well done and maybe leads on to a sequel? I hope so!!
This is probably the best ghost story I have ever read. So well written, so descriptive and touches of humour which I appreciated. I hope this author writes more books like this.

Heartwarming ghost story.

Entertaining story about a young woman who finds a new life and a sense of purpose in Australia. Her job as a house sitter in an isolated home puts her in the position to save the trapped souls in the home. As she struggles with this problem she becomes a far better person. Lots of suspense keeps the reader turning the page.

There were a few typos but it didn't distract me from the story which flowed so well. I got lost for hours actually being in the house and on the land, I've never been so drawn to a story ever. It was creepy, a few good twists and very moving. I've never shed a tear at the end of a book before, well done TM Creedy, a lot of authors could learn from you!

When I started reading I thought this would just be a nice read. Within an hour I was caught up in the story. I felt like I was there. Sara became a very real person to me. I hate that it ended. This is a magical writer, it's been a long time since I was caught up in a book like this.. I didn't put it down ,I read it in one sitting.

WOW!

Just finished the book and really enjoyed it. As I got towards the end of the story I wondered how the author would tie the first part with the last part. Touche! Absolutely well done.

A Story to Crow About

When her short term lodger is murdered a desperate young woman with a serious gambling problem assumes her identity. Sara and the lodger look remarkably alike so it is not difficult for her to take over her house sitting gig at a beautiful mansion in an isolated area of Australia. The owners are lovely and she comes to rely on the handsome stockman and his loyal dog. But Sara soon realizes there is something else at play at the mansion. Once a home for mostly children with Down's Syndrome and a few Aborigines, the mansion houses an evil that is powerful and determined. Sara must contend with otherworldly danger as well as a vengeful murderer

This is one of the best novels I've read all year. Sara develops and grows more likable. It is equal parts ghost story, psychological thriller and murder mystery. The pace was good and it was satisfactory in all respects.

More mysterious than scary, but good

I wasn't that into this book at first. Sara takes some time to grow on you. But it ended up being a great story with some surprises at the end.

A Truly Disturbing Read

Right from the start of this book I knew I was going to love it.  TM Creedy's writing style  slithers through your veins and before you know it you're immersed, unable to pry your eyes away from the pages.  It's nothing short of descriptive and you really feel like you could actually be there in the scenes.

I wholeheartedly loved the array of characters too in this novel, especially Belle. There's just something about her persona that just clicked.  There's are also the weak and strong, arrogant and kind, shy and hurtful characters, all of which really does bring this novel to life.

The story begins in Australia near a town called Ararat in the 1900's era with a slight melancholy  notion of what is to come, before quickly jumping to London, present day to the life of a gambling addict named Sara.  Desperate for cash, Sara answers an advert in the local newspaper and from there her normal daily life changes unimaginably.
Without giving too much away, the young woman finds herself with a new identity and a new job as a house sitter within Crowlands House, near Ararat, Australia and this is where the story  reveals itself, with disturbingly, shocking revelations that seethe into your bones of what really went on at this renovated place in the 1900's while it was an institute for children with downs syndrome.  There's an eerie ambience within Crowlands house and a lingering presence Sara can't quite place.  However, all is uncovered when a photograph is taken in the 'off limits' floor of the crumbling Victorian property.

Although classed as a horror, this has more of a Gothic lore feel to it and you'll find that your emotions spare no control from the chilling finds to the heartbreaking truth.  Some of the script can be downright hard to read and will really make you wonder if ever such things happened.  One thing I know for sure is that The Crowlands will be forever embedded in my mind.

I'd definitely give this 6 star rating if I could and I can't believe this is only Creedy's second novel.  There were a few typos but nothing novice in her writing at all.  I'll be keeping an eye out for future releases.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
