Please do not buy my old books or cards, as I have repented and denounced them after Jesus saved me and opened my eyes to new age deception.

Here is my testimony of why I left the new age to follow Jesus: https://youtu.be/zZSH8mvIbdk

This book changed my life and helped me acknowledge my past hidden pain and how I was using food to continue the silent torture of myself without knowing why. If you can really follow her exercises, this book will change how you relate food and emotions.

Doreen Virtue is a great author of self-help books because she writes as though she is speaking directly to you. This book was easy to follow in terms of language and syntax and she explains her points very thoroughly.

The reason I rated this book a 3 is because she outlines very specific, detailed (in many cases hurtfully graphic) stories of her patients' accounts regarding abuse. The book is an amazing reference for those people feeling they have pounds of weight to lose because they are holding unresolved feelings inside. She sites scientific studies, provides a food chart of cravings and why people have them (relating to personal feelings) and ways that one can improve their overall lifestyle.

The primary issue I had with this book was the title. When I picked this book up, I thought it would focus more on the stress and anxiety factor and for the most part, it focused on abuse and women who may be overweight because they were molested, physically abused and or raped. In fact, about 3/4 of the book focused on these types of issues. I had a few other issues with parts of the book, such as the author referring to rape by a stranger as the "ultimate offense" (are there levels of rape? I would think all rape and molestation is considered terrible and offensive equally), but those bad verbiage choices did not impact the overall presentation of the book as much.

If you're looking for a book to help you with your overeating and are a victim of any of the above, the book will work wonders for you. If you're looking for information regarding over eating due to stress/anxiety of every day life and past trouble unrelated to the above, you may want to pick up something else.

This book is written largely to those who have experienced an emotional trauma involving either abusive parents, sexual abuse, and a few other events. The book is deceptive in this because you go into it thinking it's every woman's emotional pain...but mostly it makes you thank God you're not the one the author is talking about. Or maybe you are...and this IS the book for you. When I found out that I wasn't the one the author was writing to, I kept reading. Though difficult in parts, I was able to separate the beans from the broth and gain insight to how, why, and when we use food to heal pain.

A few key "gems" I stole from this book are:

"Nothing tastes as good as thin feels".

Weigh yourself naked every morning when you wake up - AFTER voiding. This will give you a true sense of your actual weight because it controls as many controllables as possible. Weight is a tricky thing. We gain and lose weight all day long - fluctuating from one to eight pounds each day.

Getting into this practice helped me guage day-to-day how I was doing. I can study myself and see where I have changed habits that have affected the scale positively or negatively. It helped me track BM's so I could see where I needed to drink more water, eat more fiber, etc. I found that ice cream helps me lose weight - go figure! I found that anything containing red meat weighed me down for at least two days and caused a major disturbance in my bowels and worsened bloating. I found that apple juice makes me feel great AND makes me drink more water, consequently, less bloating and more weight loss. Again, go figure!

Although I finished reading this book back in January, I remember how it "hit home" for me. I have often wondered how many of us with "weight issues" suffer from underlying trauma and/or self-esteem issues. I recommend this book to anybody who struggles with unhealthy weight and/obsession with it. I also recommend it to those people who love those with unhealthy weight issues. Personally, I believe that I was trying to "hide" under the weight, hide from the reality of life around me. God bless you Doreen and all of those who struggle with "pounds of pain."

Geared more to those who eat due to sexual abuse (which isn't my problem) but still interesting to see how outside influences can make us emotionally eat. I now find myself stopping before I treat myself to realize the real reason I want to eat and for me it's because of emotions (i.e. a bad day at work).

As most great books that combine science and experience, this book explains profound truths with every chapter about one's relationship with food and their body. It begins to make sense and integrate with every chapter. It tears down slowly all that we are fed through reductive and over simplified bite size pieces of information about nutrition and food and the body. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning about their relationship with food and the body

This book opened up some sections of my life I had been avoiding. With the first section giving examples of such abuse, it was a little hard to read but I pushed on.
I think what I gained is an understanding that I can and will move through the experiences I have had in my life while in my childhood. I choose to believe that I did the best I could at the moment with the ability and knowledge I had at the time. The current me can protect and soothe the younger me who needed it most.

There were a few things I felt were wrong with this book, even though I felt I gathered a little bit of information that I didn't know about stress eating. Doreen, even though she has some good points and "theories" about why people stress eat and binge eat; the majority of the book talks on the subject of being sexually abused. I'm not saying that there aren't people that are obese or overweight being the sole reason of being sexually abused, Doreen should of covered on a lot more of the other topics. I, myself suffer from being overweight but a lot of it is my own life choices and addictions. I've been abused throughout my life and I know that is linked to my eating habits. Not everyone whom is overweight or obese has suffered from that trauma before so I feel that this book could of been better at explaining why she focused solely on that subject. Otherwise, I feel my three stars stand where they are and the book is just OK.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Not entirely applicable to my story (or to all those looking to deal with the emotions behind weight gain), but the book still contains some valuable and insightful information.

A very good book if your weight stems from trauma, which didn't help me much. A little light on specific details for overcoming but still a good overview.

A lot of what Doreen Virtue says in this book makes a lot of sense. I took a long time to read the book because I took time to let it sink in and even when I got busy and didn't have a chance to read, I was still thinking about the things she was saying. I want to go back and go through again soon and do the exercises she suggested.
