Kate Reid is a young, relatively new FBI Agent in the BAU. She and her team are called into a Florida/Georgia case where young women’s remains were found in the St. John’s river and both had obviously been murdered by the same individual at vastly different times. The investigation leads to more murders and a series of complex plot twists that include office politics and the personal lives of the agents involved. It was well done and fast reading. Thanks to the author and Harp House Publishing for an e-Galley for an honest review.

Kate is definitely gaining confidence as an FBI Agent. The plots of Mahle’s books are remarkable and extremely creative. I am vicariously living Kate’s life and can’t wait to start the next adventure.

Robin Mahle is Rocking!

This writer does a believable job putting you right into the action just like you were right there with the Feds or one of the locals. A good read and worth the time!

In our ongoing to search for some interesting new leading ladies, we came upon an FBI Agent Kate Reid novel by Robin Mahle. “Blackwaters” is the fourth in currently an 8-book set – but we wish we had started with the first, as it soon became apparent that there is a significant back story to Kate, oft-referenced but really unexplained, which detracted a bit from our reading of this one.

The plot is a somewhat conventional tale of a serial killer picking on young women as an outgrowth of a totally abusive and dysfunctional family upbringing that ended when he burnt his whole family to death! Kate had a major role in an investigation that involved several law enforcement bodies from both jurisdictional considerations as well as the growing number of slayings. While most of the narrative revolved around her role, quite a few chapters were told from the twisted killer’s point of view. Several suspenseful final chapters involving the ultimate location and capture of the perp added great interest as the rather massive police procedural came to a daunting conclusion.

We can definitely see landing the first book in this set – and suspect its entirety may well be in our “to-read” future! {3.5}

Robin Mahle and Kate Reid have been my companions through thick and thin.
I enjoyed BLACKWATERS.The novel had so many excellent qualities.A fantastic STORY-the plot
illustrated how a dangerous villain can destroy young women in the prime of life.But.to add to the hell of these killings was "the bloody hollowed opening he created by removing genitals"
This novel features the further life of FBI agent Kate Reid. She has been through the loss of a loved one,
and admit some doubt about her abilities she sails successfully through. It is fun to read about her
and chear her wins.Kate is surrounded by a cast of smart detectives and warm friendships.
Previous novels illustrate those who helped Kate become an outstanding FBI agent.
Kate Reid mysteries are worth reading.

Book would have been better if Kate wasn't portrayed as Super woman Kate to the rescue! FBI rookie with a sixth sense (that is actually just coming sense) about what a serial killer would do next. Basic questions weren't followed up on until Kate mentioned them.
As a rookie she would have been at least reprimanded for going off on her own when another officer was within shouting distance. "But I had to". Nope. Not the way it is done.
Finished the book but skimmed the last third just to see if it got better. It didnt.

I'm really liking this Kate Reid series. She's proving herself while still dealing with her doubts and sadness. A really crazy, sadistic killer is out for revenge. The story moves along nicely keeping your interest the whole way through. It's interesting to see them figure out who he is and why he's killing. I think there may be a relationship blooming in the future. Looking forward to more books in this series.

Blackwaters is the best Kate Reid novel yet. It was chilling, disturbing and hard to put down. Through the backdrop of their personal problems, we're also starting to learn more about the team and what kind of people they are. Good read.

For those who want to know: This one has language, violence and sex. It's also an 18+ read for content.

This was book 4 in a series of 7. This latest in the Kate Reid series did not fail to please. Very good build up and stretch, characters strong, very good background on what FBI agents do. Luv this series and highly recommend it. PS: I purchased all of them, so I've got 3 more to go and I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Kate has matured, still dealing with the lost of Marshall, decisions of getting rid of the car. Working with Dwight on a case, trying to spread her wings. The reinstatement of Nick, who she stood by for his 2 months while the board decided. A lot of changes, she is having to deal with, and as readers we enjoy her character and following her steps. Good series, and looking for next book.

"Dragged a bit"

I don't doubt the authenticity of the FBI procedures, but this could have been wrapped up in half the time. To claim this was fast-paced was being economical with the truth. Another reviewer commented it was written by a woman for women which explained the excess emotion. I couldn't possibly comment, except to say something made reading this a tough ask.

Scary serial killer

An exciting book of killings, inside friction in the FBI, and small town police departments. The heroine carries the torch for a dead partner. She is a naive rookie in many respects. But, she is also very good. A little longish at the wrap up which leaves one wanting to get on with it. Kate will return.

This world is full of mentally deranged people.

Just completed book #4 in Robin Mahle's Kate Reid series. Loved it, completing it in less than a day. Full of suspense, intrigue and wonderful characterization. Recommend this book and this series to everyone who loves a good mystery. Solid 5 stars once again. This series gets better with each new book!!!

Enjoyable

I have read other Kate Reid novels and enjoyed them. It has been awhile so it took me some time to get all the characters straight. The author does a good job repeating details without wasting the reader’s time. Each book can be read as a stand-alone. The mystery in this story is well told.

Kate stands on her own two feet but like before she puts herself in danger. The unsub they're after doesn't care if lives or dies and how many people he has to kill. Nick is reinstated but his personal life is falling apart. As always politics come into play. However, this time his boss has his back.

Another great read!

I have gone through the first 4 books rapidly because I hate to put them down. Stories so good, Robin Mahle is a terrific writer! The characters are real in my mind. Ready for book 5 right now. I hope the author doesn't stop with just 8 in the Kate Reid series.

Loved this, kept me from plenty of housework!

This book is one that keeps you hurrying to get back to it when you’re forced to do something else. Only things that bothered me were the grammatical errors and involvement of bureaucratic politics in the FBI.

Good story but...

Good summer read. Characters are like able although a little shallow. Writing leaves a little to be desired as grammatical errors and misuse of words distract from content. But if you like crime fiction with female law enforcement officers, you will enjoy this.

Great read

Good read with enough to keep me going to the end. I did feel the dialogue was a bit stilted at times - very stereotypical language without substance. Some parts of the plot I felt would have made more sense by reading other books in the series, which I haven't.

Good plot

Enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. It’s a clean thriller with a good cast of characters. Plot was hard hitting w/o being hard boiled. Appreciate the author’s effort. Recommended.

A good read for fans of the mystery genre!

If you haven’t read earlier books in series some events will leave you wondering what previous events are driving Kate! There are enough teasers to make you want to find out more about her life before the FBI! Enjoyable read!

Mediocre procedural. Could be the basis of an episode of "Criminal Minds." Characters need more fleshing out - hard to get invested in them. Also, don't really work well as a standalone. Too many references to previous happenings without enough background.

I can see why I quit reading this 2years ago. This book has no redeeming qualities. I wish I could erase it from my mind. Needless gore, no suspense and the characters are unlikeable and the plot goes from bad to worse. Please give this book a miss and spend your time reading something worth while.

Intense

Everyone gets caught up in their work. Most don’t have to deal eoth the element of life and death. It’s a crazy world out there and I am happy we have some people who risk it all for us.
