Running a space program was tough, so being king should be a walk in the park. Unfortunately, it was a park full of quicksand, serpents, and myriad other deadly things.

I volunteered for an ARC of the series in exchange for an honest review.

This one might be my favorite of the whole series so far.

As the name implies Charlie is a king. He's everything you could want in a king- he's compassionate, shows mercy and kindness, he is just, he leads by example and he makes a pretty good sandwich!

Bawb continues to be my favorite character. If Bawb got his own series is be a seriously happy camper.

As a reader there are some authors that when they come out with something new you can't wait to get your hands on it. Scott Baron is one of those authors for me. I've pretty much loved all his stories. I know going into it- it'll have quirky characters that will speak to me, a twist I wasn't expecting and there will be parts that are so loud funny I'll wake my husband up next to me and I'll be a fun escape from everyday life.

This was everything it promised to be- I'm thankful not to have to wait that long for the next in this series to come out

Edited to add: I just finished the audio version. Book three continues to be among my favorites of the series. I've been enjoying the audio versions as much as when i read them the first time

I adore this series so much, and this is (IMHO) the author's best book to date. It feels like a breath of fresh air. Charlie's luck changes not just in each book, but almost in every couple of chapters!

I was completely engrossed in the story, so much so that when Scott Baron's cracking (HUGE!) twisty surprises™ happened, I didn't see them coming. There's also a wonderful surprise near the end, I'm not spoiling it for you, though. The writing just flowed and the story itself is excellent. I love the fact that some of the characters are taking on some romance in their lives, it's heart-warming.

I've grown to really like Bawb (or Bob, whichever you prefer) and he has become more 'human' as time moves on. All in all, it's a very emotive book, at least it was for me...

Fantastic reading, well-structured and well thought-out plot, and intelligent full characters. What more can you ask for in entertainment value?

I chose to receive an eARC which I voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.

Great read

A fun and interesting read. Good character and plot development. First 2 books made sense but when I started the third I was not sure I would like but I really did like it and look forward to reading more.

I was so excited to see the next installment arrive starring Charlie and his band of friends. If you've been reading this series from the beginning you will know that Charlie and friends have landed back on Earth but in the past. If you haven't been reading the rest of the series, please do you won't regret it! As they learn to navigate this new world and time that they find themselves in Charlie and friends encounter new dangers and old enemies. With lots of twists and turns that will keep you up nights turning pages to know what happens next. If you like Sci-fi/Fantasy you will love this series, which each book can be read on it's own but you won't want to do. If you are new to this style you will quickly become a fan with this book and find yourself wanting to read the books that came before! I am impatiently awaiting the arrival of the next book about Charlie and all of his friends..

Charlie and Bawb have definitely joined forces by this time, although not necessarily by their own choice. Without revealing any details, they are now back on Earth, but at least a thousand years in Charlie's past. As you can probably guess from the title, he is now Dragon King Charlie, and never realized just how difficult it is to be King. I mean, it's probably better than being a slave, but being king requires way more responsibility and in some ways, more challenges. This story was fun and definitely was a mix of adventure, science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction (think Camelot). While I think I still liked the second book more, this was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the next book will bring!

If you can ignore the time travel to a medieval time trope this tale is actually a decent one. Charlie must find a way in an era when he does not dare show his magical abilities. While Charlie has decided to do what is just and right while trying to figure out to get back to right time, there are others around him who have different ideas. Charlie and his friends must fight once again in a bid to save at least some of their lives.

This book was so bad I'm not going to worry about spoilers, beginning with: The good guys don't kill the big baddie. They run away through time leaving the evil sorceress in the past, somewhat drained of power, but still surrounded by an army of slaves and, presumably, with some magical power left. After the good guys run away the evil sorceress should have slaughtered the troops they left behind and, eventually, taken over the world, but, for no apparent reason, she fails to do so.

Worse, the good guys shouldn't even have made it that far. The evil sorceress has been preparing for a year for the good guys to show up, although we aren't told that until the end of the book. At one point in time the bad guys set a trap for the MC which the MC, of course, escapes. But how does that make sense? The bad guys should know everything the MC is capable of so setting a successful trap should be well within the bad guys' abilities. Worse, the bad guys don't know that the MC has chosen to forgo using magic so as to not scare the locals meaning that the bad guys should have expected the MC to be about 10 more dangerous than he was.

So the author hides who the evil sorceress is through out 9/10ths of this book, even though he makes it completely obvious. As mentioned in reviews of earlier books, this author can only handle about 8 characters so, in a story that ranges through two different galaxies the same people keep coming up over and over again. Of course, the bad guy in book 3 is the surviving bad guy from book 2. Never mind the fact that the MC and co., through once in the universe set of circumstances, ended up back in time on earth. Somehow the evil sorceress duplicated this impossible feat arriving on earth 1 year before the MC. My point being this is just bad writing- the author didn't give the evil sorceress any kind of a useful clue or possible method of getting to earth but the evil sorceress does it any way. The explanation? The evil sorceress used the lobotomized brainwashed human who didn't know how she got to the second galaxy in the first place to find earth. But the author's own telling of this story makes it clear that the left behind human couldn't have directed anyone to earth if she wanted to, let alone an earth a 1,000 years in the past.

A key part of this story is the greatest assassin in the universe just sitting around pretending to be ineffective instead of, oh I don't know, maybe riding over to the neighboring kingdom that is threatening you and killing their king???? Which brings us back to: THIS BOOK MAKES NO SENSE, THE EVIL SORCERESS WAS LYING IN WAIT WITH TEN TIMES THE POWER OF THE GOOD GUYS. Once the dragon was trapped (which didn't make any sense either- a 50,000 year old highly intelligent dragon just strolls into an obvious trap - or at least it should have been obvious since the dragon was aware iron could entrap her and so should have been on the look out for iron) the evil sorceress should have just ridden in with her army taken the good guy's castle and killed everyone inside.

Bottom line: This book was so stupid I stopped reading it multiple time just to get over my frustration with it. The author managed to make his prior books fun in spite of all the stupidity they contained. Not the case here. The ending was mildly interesting but pathetic given the above mentioned fact that the good guys just run away leaving their underlings to face an evil sorceress. This book made me wish I hadn't bothered with the series at all.

I couldn’t finish it and trust me I really tried.

This is by far one of the worst books I’ve ever tried to read. I liked the first two books, but this one probably killed the whole series for me. I got to about half way through the book and stopped because it felt like I was being duped. The story has so much redundant information that I found myself skimming over whole sections and still know what’s happening. And I use the word “duped” because it felt like that was done intentionally to lengthen the book for some unknown reason. Especially since the book has relatively good grammar leading me to believe someone at least proofread this. There are about 15 chapters out of the first 31 that do nothing to advance the plot or develop characters further. And there are gaps in knowledge that can be solved by adding 1 to 2 sentences max. This book really got under my skin. If you’re a fan of being given useless/redundant information for nearly 400 pages by all means give it a go. If you’re a fan of mediocre pacing, helpful plot points, reading in general, stay far away from this book. 10/10 Do not recommend.

P. S. Yes. I know. Some of my review was redundant, but that’s just how bad this book was. It infected me with its nonsense!

I bulled through the first 3, but the thing about this series that ruins it for me, is that you get people doing some TRULY evil things to the MC and his people, and while the author gets us to hate these people, he never allows us to get closure against these enemies.
The guy who originally enslaved him and lobotomized his colleague? Nothing bad ever happens to him.
The pirate captain who suddenly decided to sell him to be a gladiator? Killed "off camera"
The mage who bought him to get him to control the dragons and who tortured Aura? Killed coincidentally in a case of karmic justice (okay, this one I was cool with)
The king who killed a BUNCH of his soldiers and kidnapped his wife? Dies as an afterthought.
The mage's daughter who seemed to have a hard on for torturing those under her, namely the animal girl? She's fine.

I'm sensing a theme here, and I don't really care for it. I don't generally need to see justice done, but if you make me hate a character, DO SOMETHING WITH IT.

An unfortunate end to this series. Yes, I realize that the author has more installments beyond this one but for me, this was the end. I can accept many instances of Deus ex Machina events but a very limited number of "gosh that was stupid, Charlie" events. And what this installment presented was a series of unacceptably stupid events, triggered by the unthinking actions of main characters who, up to now, have demonstrated an ability to think on their feet and move forward. That so many plot turns were initiated by a character's bad decisions was unacceptable and at 65% I had finally had enough and returned this book.

My advice is to leave this on the shelf. Stop after book 2 and pretend there is nothing more.

Sad trombone sound

The setting didn't fit the characters like the previous ones and it wrote off a galaxy-wide rebellion in a villain monologue! The big bad's identity could've been handled a lot better than the last-minute reveal. Charlie needs to be having fun misadventures while falling in love, not playing king. Disappointing and the last of the series I obtained for free so I have no desire to continue it.

I was hoping these would gradually get better because the first two are OK and they have great potential but honestly the quality has dropped with this one. I'm about half way through and I don't even think I'll bother finishing it, I rarely do that.

If you want to read something similar but much MUCH funnier and better written read Space Team series by Barry J. Hutchison.

okay

The author demonstrates a profound ignorance of history and logic, but this children’s story is still somewhat fun. Very simple and highly predictable, but then so are most modern stories. If food, it’d be fast food.

“Dragon King Charlie” is the concluding audiobook to the “Dragon Mage” trilogy series. The entire series is a wonderfully written story combining elements of both science fiction and fantasy in to one epic tale. The series is penned by author Scott Baron while the audiobook edition is skillfully narrated by Gary Bennett. I rated the other two audiobooks very high, and this last one did not disappoint. Take everything from the previous audiobooks in the series and bring the story, sadly, to a conclusion and you have Charlie who has become a Dragon King. The journey which the author and narrator take you on is well worth your time and precious Audible credit(s). If you are a fan of either fantasy or science fiction, there is something in this audiobook for everyone. Be aware that each of the audiobooks in the series is written so that they should be enjoyed in order.

Let me give you a bit of a recap of the previous two books. If you have not listened to the other books, please skip this paragraph as it might contain some slight spoilers. Take our engineer (Charlie) who never liked space travel and assign him to a ship on its maiden voyage using a never tried technology. Because of an issue, the ship was transported to a different galaxy. Crash landing on an alien world and losing most of his friends or co-workers, Charlie is alone. Even worse, this new place uses magic to power most thing so Charlie’s skill as an engineer is rather limited. Captured by slavers, becoming a pirate and forced to become a gladiator fighter, Charlie is later purchased by a mysterious person with an agenda. He escapes with a few of his friends and they end up back on Earth, yet they soon discover it is centuries prior to his own time. Wow, Charlie sure endured many things in his travels, and he did not even want to go on the ship in the first place. Charlie sure had some really bad luck.

Unlike with audiobook two in the series, book three seems to open without a prologue or background details for readers who may have forgotten some of the previous story. You are dropped right into the action and adventure where the previous book left off. However, the author does a great job of filling in some of the gaps via flashbacks or comments made by the characters reminiscing upon past experiences. At times I found myself saying “Oh yeah, that is right!” when the author reminded me of a past experience. I like how it helped bridge this part of the story with previous ones. In many ways, I found that I liked it better than a standard prologue chapter. The story included an epilogue chapter as well to help the listener close out any of the plot lines or situations; well done.

As with the previous two books, many of the Charlie’s old friends are back in this one. One of my favorites, Bob, is back as well. There is the same teasing and poking we have seen before. However, in this book we have some rather emotional scenes and losing some one or more main characters along the way. Charlie really sees that being a king is a difficult job and his actions often impact those around him. He still struggles in teaching, learning, and training members of the party as they each have struggles of their own needing to be worked out. New enemies are on the horizon and they are quite powerful as well. It takes all of the team to attempt to reach the goals of getting Charlie back to his time. I continued to see a unique magic system and the ability to store magic in different ways. I liked that magic was still a big part of the last book in the series along with the use of technology.

About the audiobook’s narration, I really like the clear, smooth, and clean voice of Gary Bennett. It is one of those voices that allows the listener to enjoy and feel they can get to know the individual characters. Each of the characters felt alive and dimensional due to the inflection given them by the narrator. I do not recall their being any issues with the audio itself. There were no pops, swallows or other background noises. Just a clean and professionally produced audiobook.

For Parents and younger listeners, as with the previous audiobooks, this book contains vulgar language along with some crude and light sexual humor. It is not used excessively but be aware that there is some contained in this audiobook. If this content easily offends you, I would suggest you find a different series to start.

In summary, Dragon King Charlie was a great conclusion to a very good series. It has a good balance of action, adventure, and humor. There were times the story was on the edge of being over-the-top, yet it had enough emotional parts to bring you back down. The magic system was interesting and different along with it not being overly powerful. Relationships were seen to be quite important for the group to meet their goal. For me, Bob is still my favorite character apart from Charlie of course. I enjoyed this audiobook and the series quite a bit.

Solid read. I would say that the book has a little bit of meandering in the early chapters. Not really advancing the plot, but just Charlie, and co adjusting things in the kingdom.

The story this time has this sense of... anxiety the entire way. We see Charlie, and co doing small things to change the kingdom essentially for the better, but sub consciously there's this feeling that SOMETHING is going to go wrong. Meaning; Charlie is trying to be a good person, while still maintaining the image of being king. He jumps down into a pit to save a peasant child who fell in, despite his guards telling him that kings don't do that. Their discomfort in seeing Charlie do it anyways. Little things like that which as the reader I couldn't help but feel like his people would revolt due to Charlie being unfit to rule, or rocking the boat too much.

Nevertheless by books end things kind of do go south as they are wont to do, but not in the way I thought. The series continues to be entertaining, and [I mean this in a good way] doesn't require me to be hyper-focused on every minute detail. I'm reading this as my palette cleanser series in-between larger/longer reads, and still enjoying it.

I have read the first three in this series and am reading the fourth. Well I say reading, I am listening to the audiobook as I am driving 5 hours a day to work and back so it passes the time nicely.
I can’t work out whether the series is written for adults or teens, there’s a fair sprinkling of F***s, s**t and the odd t*ts as well but who in knows. I am enjoying the stories but the writing is not always quite as good as the plot. For instance I can’t work out why in this book Charlie turns into a blood thirsty twat for a man who hates killing it seems a tad weird. Nor why the author keeps referring to early Medieval as a few thousand years ago, the impression you get form book one is that it is set in the near future. Still as I say the stories are enjoyable and nice and easy to take in while driving.
The narration is ok but suffers from Audible’s production values as do quite a few other books, any time someone shouts it has to be faked, i.e. very energetic whispers which does make the art or narration a bit of a farce.

Scott Baron continues to stun us with his involuted story Charlie Gault. In this one, Charlie and his crew try to get away from the head magician's daughter and somehow manage to fly through time and space and land back on earth. The only problem is that they land a few thousand years before Charlie's familiar time. They are in the middle ages in Wales and the first thing that happens is that the king of this small area rides up on his horse with his troops around him and demands their surrender. The dragon fries the king and his horse in her fire and eats them both. Charlie becomes king in his place, and Leila becomes his queen. Leila has her wolf-dog Baloo to take care of her security, leaving Charlie and Bawb to handle the rest of the troops in their castle. Charlie institutes a new and advanced training schedule for the men and Bawb plays his non-physical advisor. Meanwhile, Hunze gravitates to the kitchen and begins to learn to cook. Sounds pretty cushy, right? You simply must read the rest of this book; it's stunning!

Absolutely wonderful!!! I can't say too much, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone. It was a bit slow to start, and I found myself constantly asking "Where is Rika? What about Rika?" And, not to disappoint, About halfway through, it all picks up and gets really good. If the reader pays attention, it should be obvious who the invading king is, or along the lines of who is with him. At the end (without saying any spoilers) it was just too exciting to know what had happened. If you haven't read The Clockwork Chimera series, go read those before this book! That's all I can say. Fabulous book, and eagerly awaiting the next!

Love love love this series, completely addictive!

What a fantastic continuation of the story. The characters are rich, lovable or hateable, they breathe! Back to Charlie's planet, but some timing problems keep you swirling in a soup of awe.

I took a star because, regrettably, there were enough errors to take me out of the story. After a bit it became annoying. No one wants to stop in the midst of all these fascinating events to re-read a sentence to see if it should be 'of' or 'or'. Another pass by the editor, or a proofreader would have fixed this.

I have already pre-ordered the next two books.

Not the end of our story

Charlie becomes a king and sets about endearing himself to his new subjects. With the help of Bawb , he rules wisely , but there is danger on the horzon. It is rumored that another king wants his throne, and he has a wizard to help him. Charlie knows there is no magic on Earth at this time except his and Bawb's, but something is afoot. Charlie loses Ara, which tends to diminish his power a bit, but he manages to escape with his new friends and an old one, to a future he never imagined.
