I have to confess, I totally judged this book by its cover! Boy, was I in for a surprise! What I thought would be a dull read turned out to be an exciting adventure. The storyline was captivating, and the twist? Absolutely brilliant! This book is a hidden gem, and I'm so glad I gave it a chance.
It's rare that I read an entire story, and give it a 1 star.
What I will say is this, it wasn't all bad. Not even close. But it was kind of a bait and switch and then everything got turned on it's head. Now, I have just about zero trigger warnings, but I also like to know what I'm in for, or at least have some general idea. It's not necessarily that this poked at my delicate sensibilities, but, to me, this felt like it was done in poor taste. You know?
Why didn't I throw in the towel sooner? Sh*t didn't get real until 75%. Then it just kept dropping these bombs along the way that kept leaving a worse and worse taste in my mouth. I feel like my mind could use a "cleaner" now.
Okay, so let me back up to the good-ish stuff. This is a good ole fashioned, angsty second-chance romance. Gunner and Reagan were high school sweethearts. She was the good girl from a loving family and he was the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks and had a lot of terrible things going on with his family. Although young, they were wildy in love. Then a massive misunderstanding happens and Gunner takes that as his queue to leave town and never come back.
He comes back 8 years later with bad news of Reagan's sister and now all the wheels are back in motion. Now, I won't lie, I was enjoying myself, but it was nothing that hasn't been done before. But Gunner and Reagan have a lot of history and great chemistry. When it hits about the 75% mark, I assumed this would just end all nicely and I'd have my self an enjoyable read. Spoilers ahead on why I was wrong. [Just to reiterate here, I'm talking MAJOR plot spoilers. Only read on if you really want to know.]
And yes, that all happened at the last 25%. And a whole bunch more, to be honest, but I felt like this review is already long AF.
For me, it was beyond WTF. I digress. It was all good until it really wasn't. I know I laid into it. But I just wish I had some kind of full-disclosure notice before starting or else I really would've passed. So I suppose here is me sharing the full-disclosure I wish I had. Because the blurb and most of the book does not indicate that shiz really will get turned on its head. Anyways, cheers and happy reading. This one has high reviews so it may just be me.
Heavy on the romance with a sprinkle of mystery and suspense.
If you're a fan of second-chance romance this is a novel for you!
Gunner came from a troubled home, where he tried his best to protect his siblings from their abusive parents. It wasn't until he met Reagan that he was shown love and acceptance. However, a misunderstanding caused their relationship to fall apart. Eight years later, Gunner and Reagan are reunited due to an unexpected event. Can they make amends with their past?
I wanted more mystery and suspense from the story, but I enjoyed the romance. I would recommend it to fans of romance.
*** Thank you to NetGalley, Kiersten Modglin, and Dreamscape Media for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.**
"Unlike life, death could be cleaned - erased. Death was easy. Life was where things grew complicated."
Wow! What a great suspense/mystery/thriller!!! Twists and turns, intrigue and mystery, danger, love, betrayal - it's all in there!! This is my second read from this author, and both times she has had me glued to my kindle, unable to put it down!
Gunner James is the cleaner. The one who's called in to clean up any signs of death that remain after the body is gone. When the death of his unseen neighbor hits too close to home, he has no choice but to return to the one place he swore he'd never step foot in again. To the one mess he hasn't cleaned up. Her. It's time for closure. But, seeing her again has only reinforced that he still loves her, and now there's even more at stake. When mysterious and threatening notes all point to someone in his past, a past he thought was long ago buried, he has to protect her. But, who can he trust? Can he put an end to it, before he loses it all? He walked away from her once. Lost her. But he'll be damned if he'll do it again.
Reagan Orrick was doing fine on her own. She had long since moved on from the heartbreak she endured when he left. No word. No note. No call. Just gone. He never even let her explain that what he thought he saw was so far from the truth. Now, nearly a decade later, he's here at her front door and all those feelings came flooding back. He was her forever once upon a time. Can she convince him to stay this time? Will he believe her when she tells him the truth - and about the secret she's been keeping? Their past is about to collide with their present, threatening any chance they might have, and she's not sure she'll survive it. Will any of them?
This was so good! Kiersten has a way of drawing you in to the characters and into the story! You're never sure what's going to happen next and you'll have no choice but to keep reading, even when the clock says 2 AM, like mine did! She'll lead you in one direction, and you'll smugly think to yourself that you've got it all figured out. Then, BAM! You're taken in a new direction, and left guessing until the end!!
The Cleaner was an amazing read, full of mystery and suspense! I was hooked from the first page, and I was completely on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it!! I loved it!!
The Cleaner by Kiersten Modglin has a Jaw dropping storyline... A must read!!!
I absolutely loved this book!! Listened to it in just one sitting at 1.75x I was hooked right from the beginning. From the past story to the present, the suspense, twist and turns, second chance at love, intertwined so beautifully and written so well that I wish it never ended. This had all the feels. It was cute, sad, happy, funny, dark. Oh and that twist at the end wrapped it up so well.... A beautiful box with a nice bow. An absolute 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscape Media ❤️ and the author for this Audiobook. It was an absolute delight listening to it.
Gunner James is always cleaning up everyone's messes. So it comes to no surprise that it would prove useful in his career as a crime scene cleaner. He has lived in New York for the past 8 years running from a life of abuse, torment and heartbreak. But when his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a dead body, he has no choice but to return to the place where it all began.
Reagan Orrick knows all about heartbreak. After all Gunner disappeared into the night 8 years ago. He ripped her heart right out and left a mess in his wake. But when he shows up after the passing of her sister, to pay his respects, secrets that were buried and long forgotten, begin to unravel.
Secrets never stayed buried. But when all is revealed will death claim them?
Wow! What a read this was! I was immediately drawn in and hooked. This story was deep and a bit dark. Full of suspense and twists that will have your jaw dropping. This may be a romance, but it is a drama as well. I was questioning everything. The story is written in the present tense with flash back scenes, that give you the back bone of the story. I find that most authors don't pull off these type books well, but that is not the case with Kiersten Modglin. She pulled it off splendidly. Not once did it feel like it was choppy and missing pieces. It flowed flawlessly. Well done.
The characters of this story have a love that is deep and intense. It is like their story reaches into your soul and tries to rip it out. Classic bad boy v.s. determined good girl. An unlikely pair against the world. These characters are well-developed and very strong-willed.
Overall this book is a roller coaster ride of drama. Just when you think everything is ok, bam! Something else happens and throws you for a loop. It is full of suspense with twists and turns in every direction, that will keep you guessing till the end. So pick this book up today and enjoy a thrilling ride that will have you on the edge of your seat and white knuckling the whole way.
I’ve not read anything by this author before but after reading this and loving it I’ll certainly be reading more of hers in the future.
Gunner is a cleaner. He cleans up after dead bodies have been removed. When he gets a reality check he realises there’s one clean up job he hasn’t finished. He wants closure so goes back to Reagan. Reagan has had her heart broke by Gunner. She’s tried hard to move on but can’t forget him. Can she forgive him? Will Gunner leave her again?
I absolutely loved this storyline. I found this to be a well written romantic suspense that gripped me from start to finish. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I love romantic suspense! I love angst and suspense stories are usually guaranteed to give me that and who doesn't love a little bit of sweetness on the side?
Anyways, when I heard about The Cleaner, I was intrigued and then I saw the cover and knew I had to read it! It looked too good and sounded fantastic!
The thing about this story is Modglin, doesn't just give you the big suspenseful moment that turns the plot of the story differently then you had expected. She gives you a few of those moments.
I cannot tell you how many times I started yelling at my kindle because I couldn't believe what happened next!
And the romantic part was so sweet. This would be considered more of a "clean" romance, but trust me, you still want to read it.
The ins and outs, ups and downs, and total unpredictable-ness of this book will have you swooning, cursing, crying, and wondering how you've missed out on more stories like this in your life!
What a book! It had everything. Mystery, murder, sexual shenanigans! Loved it. Then again I do enjoy this authors so much.
“The Cleaner” is such a brilliant story, I never knew what would happen next. It kept me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly recommend this novel! ❤️📚❤️📚❤️
WOW!!! I loved this book! I am a sucker for a good romantic suspense. This book drew me in right away and would not let me go. This was my first book by this author can I honestly cannot wait to read more. This book honestly has it all! I was in love with Reagan and Gunner. I had this book read in one sitting, I could not put it down. My emotions was all over the place, I felt like I was on a emotional roller-coaster that I didn't want to get off of. There was times I wanted to throw my kindle and just yell. I did not see that ending come.... This is a must read!! I recommend this book to anyone!!!
Once again Kiersten blew my mind. She is definitely my once click buy. I love this book! This book is a must have! If you are looking for suspense this author knows how to write some amazing twists.
I will not go into detail, but this is a story about Reagan and Gunner. This very good Romantic suspense that will have all your emotions spinning, and have a rapid heart rate in a couple scenes.
This is my first time reading anything by this author. Wow, this book had a well - written storyline about Gunner and Reagan. You were able to follow along to the story. That had plenty of suspense, romance, angst. With a ending you didn't see coming. This book was so good, I had to literally read it in one sitting.
This book was absolutely amazing!! It has everything a reader could ever want rolled into one fantastically written story. It was packed full of mystery and suspense. There were so many twists & turns to keep ya guessing. I adored Reagan & Gunner!! Once I picked this one up it was impossible to put down.
po prostu pffff... mam tak zwalona szczeke w dol ze widac moje migdałki. nigdy nie zrozumiem jak mozna czuć aż taką nienawiść. tak zniszczyć kogoś z powodu nienawiści....
I read an ARC of this author's last release and quite enjoyed it, so when she approached me and asked me if I'd like an ARC of this book, I instantly said yes and started reading my ARC as soon as I received it! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book more than I was expecting to! The plot held my interest all the way through and I found myself intrigued after reading the first few chapters! The plot also had an interesting plotline and I enjoyed that it had flashbacks to the characters being teenagers! These scenes showed the characters first interacting and their relationship forming! The plot also only took me a few sittings to read and I loved the twist and turns in it! They really added a lot to the plot and completely changed it! The romance between the two main characters was also very beautiful! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Gunner was the main male character, and in this book he worked in quite a sad, gross job, but he didn't seem to mind lol! I liked Gunner a lot in this book! He did keep his cards close to his chest in the flashbacks when he was a teenager, but his secret did come out! It was a very sad secret and had a big impact on not only Gunner, but his siblings! Gunner was also so in love with his love interest and was very protective of her! Reagan was the main female character and love interest of Gunner! I loved Reagan a lot in this book! As a teenager, she was very naïve and had been through quite a few tough situations! She was very sweet as well and gave Gunner the benefit of the doubt! She never judged him and wanted to know the real him! As an adult, Reagan was more stubborn and had a lot more reasonability! I could understand why she was hesitant when it came to Gunner because he did leave her! It was easy to see that she still had feelings for him though! I loved that this book was written from both Gunner and Reagan's point of views! I was hoping that it was going to be, especially as the synopsis suggests that it's going to be, so I'm really happy that it was! It allowed for a lot more things to happen in the plot and it helped me connect more with both characters! This book was also written in third person, and I normally don't like reading books written from third person, but I seem to be reading more and more of them, so this helped me a lot and made it easier for me to connect with the characters! I can also completely understand why this book is a standalone! I'm really sad that it is because I would have loved to have read more on Gunner and Reagan, but all the questions raised were answered and the plot ended perfectly! I now can't wait to see what this author is going to release next! I have to be honest and say that I would pick this book up because I recognise the author's name, but I'm not sure if the cover would draw me to it if I saw it scrolling through Amazon! It does suit the book though and I do like it a lot! Big thank you to Kiersten for an ARC of The Cleaner!
An intense second chance romance. I love that their romance started so early and was a challenge all those years ago. Just two kids finding love in the world where people didn’t think they should be together. The one part I hated was that she was engaged to someone else. Just broke my heart for him and for her kid who was undoubtedly attached to him.
🌀Synopsis Gunner is a crime scene cleaner in New York until the scene comes to him. Someone dies in his building and he finds out it’s the sister of the woman he once loved. Knowing this, he must return home to bid his condolences. Reagan not only lost her sister, but she now has to face the guy who left her. Oh, and tell him he has a kid. Feeling the loss of him all those years ago, she’s hesitant to let him in. Gunner knows he has to be a dad to their daughter and decides to move home. When they take a family trip to Mew York to pack up Gunner’s belongings, things take a wild turn. One of Gunner’s siblings comes back into his life and puts Reagan’s life at risk. Now Gunner must save them both before he loses them for a second time.
This started out okay. I was very intrigued by the idea of this story. Gunner and Reagan, bad boy - good girl… in high school, an uncharacteristic kind gesture from him has her locked in. She wants to get to know him more. She sees through the hard exterior to the sweet boy underneath. And all he wants to do is protect her. All sounds good, right?
This book starts in present day. Gunner lives in New York as a crime scene cleaner. He stumbles across a dead body in his apartment building… the body of his ex’s younger sister. He goes home to tell the family and we learn of the tragic past between Gunner and Reagan.
The night she gave him her virginity, he comes back into the room to Reagan in bed with his brother… and instead of giving the situation two fucking seconds to get a little bit of clarity, he just leaves… town! He leaves behind his mother and twin siblings, victims of their father’s abuse and just takes off. What?!? It’s just so dumb!
Now, years later, he comes back and finds out the truth. He also finds out that Reagan has a kid, HIS kid… and he is suddenly jealous that Reagan has moved on?
Just so stupid! The daughter is written as a 8 or 9 yo, but her dialogue is way too mature. There is just so much about this book that was needlessly infuriating. Gunner was annoying. The way things happen was choppy and unconnected. It felt like the author was trying to put things in for shock value, but it was a misfire for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This second chance romance is a little different then the rest. A large portion is from 8 years prior and how they fell in love. It is suspenseful and beautiful all at the same time.
I enjoyed this book so much!! Gunner is your typical bad boy with a big heart. He came from shit but was determined not to let it take him over. I love Gunner! I wish I could tell you about all the other characters because I have so much to say but I will not ruin this book for you! I went into this book blind. I didn’t even remember reading the blurb and what I got was not what I suspected. The title made me think there would be more to the “cleaner” thing. But really it did not make or break the story.
I think Reagan is a peach. Like truly a southern peach. Time and circumstances may have changed her a bit but she is just a sweet little thing. I think these two were meant to be in love. I was sad when things changed.
This book was truly very interesting. I think some things felt a bit rushed or not defined enough but I was engrossed with this book. I’m sad it’s over I want to know more about a certain man who makes a mean milkshake!! This book will keep you up at night wanting to finish and will make you happy you did. Grab it now!!
**I received this book as an ARC and in return gave my honest review**
I don’t even know what this was, it had a lot of disjointed components and eventually it ended. It started off pretty well, there was an exciting discovery of a dead woman and pieces of information about her. Then that part of the story is sort of dismissed and we see history of a romance that is getting a bit of a second chance. Then suddenly there’s some kind of psychological thriller part with a few new secondary characters but then they’re gone. Then there’s an ending that was odd, abrupt, and poorly written. The story was like skipping a stone across a deep lake, it jumped across deep topics touching lightly on them then moving on without really connecting. Violence. Sex. Swearing. Abuse, mental illness, addiction, grief, assault, drugs, drinking, etc
Ok, I don't typically read romance, even if it's labeled as "romantic suspense", but from the first chapter, I was all in!
Gunner is a cleaner, a crime scene cleaner, to be specific, and it seems he was destined for the job. He's been cleaning up messes his whole life...from both his family and from Reagan, the girl he met in high school who saw past his trashy family and tough guy facade.
In typical Kiersten Modglin style, there isn't a wasted word, and the plot races on with such ferocity that telling yourself, "Just one more chapter" means "My eyes are burning, but I HAVE TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS!"
Thrilled to know there are 3 more books in this series. On to book 2!
"I'm good when I'm around you because you deserved it. There's a difference in pretending to be good for you and actually being good." - Gunner
I fcuking love this book!
The complexity of the main hero calls to me, to my inner-slut-cause-she-loves-bad-boys self.
Gunner, the hero in this book, is "The Cleaner". And of course, you read books, so you know we're not discussing janitorial job literally here.
This has been one of the best 2018 romantic-suspense I have read so far and I can honestly say that this book will stay with me for a long time.
As you've read in the synopsis, this isn't just an underground themed story: it has also a second-chance flavor in it. And who doesn't love reconciliation here?
The heroine Reagan slowly fell in love with Gunner during their younger years. Everything is going good between them until something happened that made Gunner disappear in her life without a trace.
Fast forward, he came back knocking on her door. Imagine that.
But life has been different ever since their separation and there has been a huge change with Gunner.
And to Reagan as well.
This isn't just a bang-bang kind of book. It has romance in it as well.
Life throws these two again together but someone from their past has been "watching and planning to ruined them again. This time, that someone is determined to succeed.
Over all, this book has a great pacing, and character development. You get to see the evolution of them, the way they were and how they've been. Fantastic twists and turns and surprises you wouldn't expect. I can honestly say that this won't be the last book I will read from this author.
