Key and Rinko have a one night stand and for whatever reason, she obsesses over it endlessly for over five volumes even though a) she was insanely drunk, b) he was instrumental in getting her fired, and c) he has insulted everything about her from her appearance, her demeanor, her work ethics, her talent, her hobbies, her friendships, and how she handles just about everything. Did I mention HE GOT HER FIRED, causing her to feel completely insecure in her career and her life choices? And to also be UNEMPLOYED???? Rinko is also exceeding quiet, timid, and meek around him - a departure from how she behaves with every other character in this book.
Now we find out that the reason Key is such an absolutely vile character is because he had a wife that died. A wife who was his former pediatrician when he was really sick as a kid??? Who he married when he was barely out of his teens? Anyway, she died, so he is SAD and needs to treat everyone poorly so they can feel as sad as him. And if this wasn’t an obnoxious justification for his actions, his wife! Looks! Like!! Rinko!!!!!!!!
And now he apparently treated her terrible cause he LOVES her AND she reminds him of his wife!!!!!
Hahahahahha.
So Rinko, who just moved in with her nice, stable boyfriend who is DELIGHTED at having someone in his life, gets whisked away by her supposed friends who ignore her wishes to stay in her new, comfortable life and INSIST she has to go three hours away to save Key, the same guy who had also insulted all of them. Cause what if Key loves her? What if what if? They literally scream at her into going in a reversal of what actual supportive female friends would do - no good friend would be like, yah, drop your life for this guy who abuses you at every turn. Please. They would be telling her to run the other way.
And now we’re here where I think there is supposed to be some massive twist that Key is actually way more like the women than he bargained for and I think I am supposed to swoon by them having sex in a row boat on a beach?
The thing is: Key is irredeemable. The opportunity to redeem him passed ages ago. It’s like the mangaka got bored of the story half way through and the chapters where Key was supposed to grow as a person, where there was supposed to be some justification as to why he is worthy of our lead female protag, were lost. His behavior got exceeding worse and more than that, aside from being cruel, snarky, vindictive, creepy (when he just??? Shows up???? At Rinko’s date???????????) and stoic, he has zero personality. When has he shown us personality other than staring blankly at people and being annoyed?
Key’s faults lie in not in his trauma, but in his terrible characterization and often lazy, vague writing. How disappointing for a series that started off so promisingly.
One volume left. Ugh.
(Also, those pages and pages of filler that were supposed to give us more background into the girls’ history and friendship? Added nothing to the overall story at all.)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Half of this volume is flashback that doesn't really add any new content, and interrupts THE climax of the "what if" plot line. Really still don't like Key, and not enjoying the direction this is heading.
Is it weird that this is volume where I’ve found Key even remotely attractive? He’s still an absolutely garbage person and his haircut is stupid, but there were a couple angles where he was the perfect josei pretty boy, if only for a moment. I still hate his guts, though.
Even though Rinko and Hayasaka's relationship isn't meant to last, I'm annoyed it has to end like this. It makes no sense for Kaori and Koyuki to encourage Rinko to chase after Key. There have been moments in the series where his facade slips but ultimately, he's an asshole who's stuck in the past and takes it out on everyone else. He's self-righteous and never questions his own behavior. Trying to redeem him now is too little, too late. Another thing that bothers me is that half of this volume consists of advice columns. It was fun when it started but at this point, I don't care. Get on with the story already!
I do not understand Rinko's friends here. Why would you do any of that? And Key, blegh. The flashback chapter was kinda pointless, too. I just don't get the various attractions here.
Soooo Rinko and Key... Ehhhh. I get that she may not be super happy with her man (hes forgetable if sweet) but just... you were HAPPY so why... ehhh..... lying to him and then the way this played out is just not very nice at all. It is a good soap opera though!
Sigue habiendo cosas de la cultura japonesa que chocan un poco con mi visión de la vida, pero supongo que porque yo no he crecido con la presión de casarse.
I can tell we’re finally nearing the end of this series, because Rinko and Key are finally having some emotional breakthroughs in their relationship. I’m glad she finally got the courage to tell him what she really thinks. Honestly, he’s been kind of a jerk to her this whole time, but I think Rinko finally realized that he was angry at what he saw was them wasting their lives, and sad that his first love was dead. She has a kinder heart than Key deserves, but I’m glad she opened his eyes to the way he has also been living in the past. I feel bad for Hayasaka, because he was the one who had wanted to take it slow, and undoubtedly he’s going to be hurt by the fallout of this night. Also, Mami is the true hero of this story. Rinko’s friends love her deeply but they are just too involved sometimes.
Pretty much the only part I didn’t like of this volume was the extensive flashback scene with milt and liver in Rinko’s brain and memories. I’ve never really “got” that part of the story, and even though they are trying to do the philosophizing, the weird turns of phrase and confusing and off-putting. I just want to know what happens next!
I was really, REALLY excited to see some resolution finally coming... and then I realized the last half of this volume was flashback and side story. First half was 5 stars... last half... boo, bad form. Just publish the end already.
the library had everything but vol 9 in stock so we'll see how this concludes at a later date, but at this stage I think I can confidently say that the primary romance is frustrating me!!! it's frustrating meeeee baybeeeee
Mami rallies the girl squad to kidnap Rinko and make her go with them to find Key because 1) Key is missing. 2) Key's late wife has a lot of similarities to Rinko 3) Rinko might actually have a chance with him.
So even with Rinko protesting and claiming that she was perfectly happy with Hayasaka, she goes and confronts Key (one-on-one) with a surprising twist.
And then the story cuts off, goes into a prequel and tacks on two short stories so we have to wait until volume 9 to find out what happens. Fun.
Rinko has finally found peace and her friends screwed it up for her in the last volume because a MAN has trauma that has nothing to do with Rinko.
In this volume, we essentially hit the story’s climax. However, it’s rudely interrupted at the halfway point for some highly unnecessary background “context” (that reiterates points made in previous chapters), told in a gag-manga style with the liver and milt (I am TIRED of these characters. My god).
I’m hoping the next (and last!) volume redeems this mess
This was fun and dramatic as usual but I was a little annoyed it was only really two chapters of content. I'm not sure how much is in the last volume but I have a feeling they could have combined them both.
ma'am tell me why rinko's friends are exhibiting such trash behavior, like what kind of women pressure their friend to leave a stable healthy relationship for a guy who treats her like shit? what is the reason???
This volume only has 2 chapters on story and one chapter of a flashback that is not all that important. The story didn't move much as a result. With one volume remaining I am curious to see how this wraps up.
From this volume it becomes apart that the story is getting a live adaptation. The writing slightly differs and begins to resemble a drama series’s plot vs a purely manga released body of work. The ending section with the reader Q&A’s has become my favorite part.
If this series doesn't end with Rinko battling against the mascot characters with a ridiculously big sword, leaving Key to mope in the corner, then I'm considering it a failure.
chicas me destrozaron el dramote todo iba tan miseria pero a bien y derrepente dijeron plotwist cliché!!!! y yo eh NO! y el manga pos t lo comes...y yo en plan... joe matxo
