An excellent military light novel, and I'm rating it as such, that is, excusing the inevitable whiff of jingoism due the military part and the inevitable -do we say flash?- of fanservice due the light novel part. Or maybe I'm just very taken by Wagner at the end of this volume.

Read through this series as part of an attempt to understand the recent increase in Japanese nationalism. The series is focused on a portal to a roughly roman/medieval world with an empire that attempts to invade Japan. The attempt fails almost immediately when the invaders encounter the modern versions of the Maxim gun (machine guns, tanks, and jets). As the invaders have none they are almost immediately slaughtered, and the Japanese "self defense force" invades the other world in order to humanely "civilize" it. The series fails to deal with Japan's history of brutal colonialism and even goes so far as to use the same justifications (namely, that they are on a humanitarian mission to "civilize" the locals). Add in some fairly absurd chest thumping, (the JSDF ends up killing many US Navy seals when the US tries to abduct "ambassadors" from the other world) plus a main character busy building his own personal harem, and you've got a nasty piece of work.

If you want a taste of the awfulness without reading, there is an anime adaptation currently (Jan. 2018) available on Crunchyroll.

What happens when a modern day foreign military power of the real world collides with the world of fantasy? A very unique story. I first heard about Gate from the anime series (on Hulu) and then learned more about both the book series and the manga adaption. I was captivated by the originality of the story. It's like a modern day version of Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" told by a military's point of view. The author himself, Takumi Yanai, was a JSDF soldier which proves the point about writer's writing what they know. For anyone who would like isekai (*a relatively popular fantasy subgenre, where a protagonist from the real world travels into a more fantastical world), I would highly recommend this.

Potential.

So far nothing has really happened in the story but I feel as though the foundation has been set and I am looking forward to reading the next volume. The characters are set, the world is build and there was some humor along the way. Nothing outstanding has happened yet but nothing bad has happened at all either. The plot is being build and I think this might turn out to be an exciting funny read.

I started reading this after watching the anime. It was very jingoistic but at least it started as a fun romp across the new world. Around 2/3 of the way the plot became frustratingly incoherent. I actually stopped at around chapter 132 before seeing that it ended at 143. The ending was super rushed but I'm glad it was put out of its misey.

Cap 1-9

Even though the amine is very close the manga, this volume flushes out the story where anime just skipped over portions. Overall a good story of what if.

This is a Japanese Manga where there was a gate that appeared nowhere in the middle of Tokyo connecting the world and the other universe. And then suddenly people and monsters from other universes start attacking but being destroyed by the Japanese Self Defense force due to the differences between their weapons. After the mess, the Japanese government has shown interest in the other universes. First after entering the universes the Empire had a war with them, and the result was the Japanese having a overwhelming win against the Empire. The main character Itami is a normal officer in the Self-defense and not passionate about his job, just wants to live alone only with his favourite anime. However, he was the person who quickly took actions during the attack from those monsters and made the number of casualties as low as possible. Because of his action, he has been nominated to be a leader of one of the groups that are going to the other universes.

The story starts of with a random portal appearing in Ginza where a medieval army and mythological creatures appear and starts murdering everyone. In response to this sudden attack, the JSDF are sent to suppress the attack. Because of this 'Ginza Incident', the JSDF are now tasked to seek diplomatic relations with the empire beyond the gate and find those responsible for this bloodshed.

I'll admit I was a bit skeptical on reading the manga based on the synopsis given. Modern technology vs a world of swords and magic? Sounds like something out of a poorly written fanfiction. However, as I continued reading, I was amazed by how well-written and engaging the story was. So far, we have Itami, an otaku who works to support his hobbies, lead his squad onto unknown territory beyond the gate. Their task given is to explore the new land and restore peace and trust among the people there. When the village people lost their home due to the fire dragon, Itami's squad offers to help them move to a safer destination. It was quite amusing seeing the reaction of the astonished village folks in response to the moving trucks presented and the 'weird' green outfit Itami's squad were wearing. The whole scenario with everyone traveling felt somewhat heart-warming as we see Itami's men leading these families with their belongings in carriages, trusting these strangers with guns holstered on their backs to take them to a safer place.

Gate - Thus the JSDF Fought There presents our modernized life clashing together with a medieval fantasy world with surprisingly an intriguing story and decent characters to move the plot forward. Overall, I'd recommend giving this manga a try if you're interested in seeing the conflict between modernized civilization and fantasy.
