Before the end of the thirteenth century, theologians had little interest in demons, but with Thomas Aquinas and his formidable “Treatise on Evil” in 1272, everything changed. In Satan the Heretic, Alain Boureau trains his skeptical eye not on Satan or Satanism, but on the birth of demonology and the sudden belief in the power of demons who inhabited Satan’s Court, setting out to understand not why people believed in demons, but why theologians—especially Pope John XXII—became so interested in the subject.

Depicting this new demonology, Satan the Heretic considers the period between the mid-thirteenth and mid-fourteenth centuries when demons, in the eyes of Church authorities, suddenly burst forth, more real and more terrifying than ever before in the history of Christianity. Boureau argues that the rise in this obsession with demons occurs at the crossroads of the rise of sovereignties and of the individual, a rise that, tellingly, also coincides with the emergence of the modern legal system in the European West.

Teeming with original insights and lively anecdotes, Satan the Heretic is a significant contribution to the history of Christian demonology from one of the most original minds in the field of medieval studies today.

Didn't totally finish, used for research on a specific topic.

That said, a fine historical work! Answers questions about how diabolism entered the realm of heresy and how theologians thought of it through the work of Enrico del Carretto. He also includes a slightly broader intellectual history regarding demonology.

Um dos estereótipos mais comuns da Europa medieval, é o de uma era sombria onde a igreja perseguia os pagãos a ferro e fogo. Mas também foi uma era onde o misticismo e magia estiveram em alta (principalmente através da astrologia e alquimia). Quando então se deu esse divisor de águas? Quando o diabo passou de coadjuvante para inimigo real?

'Satã Herético' é uma dissertação histórica sobre as mudanças que ocorreram nos bastidores da igreja, que passou de uma posição apática perante os demônios a uma preocupação ativa com esses entes.

Debates teológicos, legislativos e naturais conduzem as mudanças que confluem na inquisição como conhecemos: a heresia antes considerada concernente apenas ao pensamento, passa a englobar outras práticas mundanas; novas interpretações de mundo sobre doenças psicológicas e natureza humana mudam a suscetibilidade do homem ao espírito; novas leis criadas para punir os hereges; e o principal, os "demônios" passam de submissos ao poder divino para poderosos adversários de Deus.

Apesar do cunho basicamente acadêmico, é um conteúdo interessante onde o autor discorre e mostra através de uma vasta documentação, a batalha pessoal do papa João XXII contra a ordem dos Franciscanos que acabou levando à tais transformações.

No fim é o velho teatro pelo poder, onde o Papa luta para manter sua moral e posicionar melhor suas peças, os intelectuais que discutem entre si defendendo sua visão de mundo, e uma própria postura defensiva da igreja contra um mundo cada vez mais secular. São os bastidores da história que normalmente não vemos!
