My bookclub’s first book club selection of 2020 is The Joy of Missing Out by Tonya Dalton. We wanted something inspiring and motivational to kick off the new year. The majority of us are moms so we can totally relate to the content of this book. There are so many things to juggle between sports schedules, school, work, etc… This book shows readers how to prioritize the important items in life-how to put what is important, front and center. With this overwhelming world, we often lose belief in ourselves and we lose focus on what really matters. We begin to limit ourselves and find that our lives are defined by our choices. Tonya Dalton gives examples and provides many different scenarios within the book. The focus is to use our most precious commodity, time, more wisely.

I was so so excited about this book and honestly, it is great. Especially for those who struggle with organizing their time and just feel like they could barely keep their head above water. Unfortunately, nothing in this book is really groundbreaking. It says the same old thing other self-help books have said but just focuses on motherhood. That being said, I have implemented many of these techniques LONG before I knew this book existed. Many times I found myself waiting for the “AHA” moment. It never came. The book starts off incredibly strong and ends beautifully. The middle left me struggling to pay attention. The examples she uses are not relatable. Sorry, but I don’t plan to be Warren Buffet, nor do I want to be. I just want to successfully get through each day feeling like a great person and a great mom. I often found that the examples and the scenarios were a little privileged. This book is not for the mom who has to work 2 or 3 jobs and has to choose between bills and food. I have been in that situation and if I would have read this book then— I would have thrown it across the room.

The author is the narrator and I know she hosts a podcast. But honestly, the narration was a problem for me. She accented certain words. For example, “We are LIMITING ourselves.” or “LET’s focus ON what REALLY matters.” It drove me nuts, so I probably won’t be listening to the podcast. It just wasn’t for me. Since the podcast is successful, I am assuming it is just a me thing. Anyway, I almost rated this book 2 stars based on my enjoyment. But then I thought about it. The ideas and tips are great and could be helpful. I just already do most of what is suggested. This book also comes with a reading guide for readers to help put these tools to the test. So I actually rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I hope this book helps others to find their North Star.

sophomoric and trivial. Choose your priority and focus on it. I just thought if I kept reading, I would learn something and nope

Can Joy be Found in Productivity?

This book wasn't quite what I was expecting. The title, of course, is a spin on the fear of missing out (FOMO), which is quite a catchphrase these days. My thought was that the joy of missing out (this book) would be the opposite of the fear of missing out, but that's not how this book comes across. In fact, it is about productivity and uses the author’s four-part system to analyze and build that. Maybe it's just me, but I don't associate joy with productivity! It almost feels as if the author is combining two buzzwords in trying to cobble together a method. The book is heavily anecdotal, particularly of the author's life, though she also includes discussion of other people’s issues and forays into solving them. In general, storytelling is a good way to get across nonfiction concepts, but it must be done with a light hand. Examples shouldn't go on for too long, and they should definitely correlate to whatever the topic is. These personal experiences and anecdotes often failed one or both of these criteria. The storytelling at times overwhelmed the message, so I wasn't really clear what I was supposed to be taking away. That's the danger of storytelling; the actual message can get lost in a high noise-to-signal ratio. The book, too, seems to be focused more on mothers of at-home children. Whether you're looking at the topic from the perspective of the joy of missing out or productivity, not everyone who needs such guidance fits into that category. All in all, I found this to be a disappointing read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Tonya Dalton has written an intricate and intimate book that will change the way you look at your life and the way you "DO" life. It will have you re-evaluating what your priorities truly are and what you should be placing in utmost importance on a daily basis. She has woven the book together by sharing relatable stories of her life and tactical tools that you can implement immediately that make a real difference. I loved each one and found myself nodding along in agreement as well as highlighting multiple passages I wanted to revisit to absorb in more depth. As a soon-to-be empty nester, my life will look very different in two years. This book challenged me to think about my long term future goals (my “North Star”) as well as how to live my best right this very moment and to appreciate my “million dollar moments” each day!

Sometimes she steps on your toes (I needed it) and sometimes you get a warm hug. Either way, you feel like you have a new friend walking you through a way to create beautiful systems that will create harmony in your life. This book found its way to a permanent spot on my bookshelf. It has dog ears, coffee and water stains already, and will more than likely look worse as I reference back to it through the years to remind myself of the JOMO I discovered within the pages.

Have you ever thought about your North Star? What guides you? What really brings you joy? Most of us skip these essential questions, and because we do, we get pulled in every direction. The work that this book asks you to do is difficult, but you are not alone. Tonya is with you every step of the way. This book is relatable and easy to read. More than that, it’s effective. Open up and do the work. You will not regret it.

The Joy of Missing Out @tonyadalton . Available Tuesday, October 1st! (@nelsonbooks #partner )

Everyone talks about the power of YES but what about the power of NO? We fill our days because we feel better about ourselves and our productivity if we can check off the boxes but are, we accomplishing the things we want to be doing or merely just doing to do?

As I continue my Bookstagram journey I continually ask myself am I happy? Does my account still reflect my purpose or have I lost focus? I started this account with the hope to share my story so that I could inspire others and in the meantime chat about one of my favorite passions, BOOKS! Its easy to get caught up in FOMO with all the #bookstacks and #newreleases but will one more stack of books really make you happy? Maybe for a moment but what about the long run?

These are all questions I ask myself on a regular basis. I’m in this for the long haul so this requires some thoughtfulness. The JOY of missing out gives us the tools to work through all of this. From figuring out what our mission is and how to start saying no so we can say yes to things that inspire and excite us.

I can honestly say this is probably one of my favorite “self-help” books I’ve read to date. It could just be timing or that I found it so applicable to the #bookstagram world, but I loved how Dalton gave me easy small things to do that seemed reasonable and attainable. I just hope that I don’t lose focus.

- Memecah goals besar menjadi goal kecil-kecil
- Bagaimana memiliki rutinitas membantu kita mengerjakan sesuatu dengan lebih efektif
- Pentingnya memperjelas batasan dan berkata "tidak"
- dan masih banyak lagi

Saya membaca buku terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia terbitan Bentang Pustaka.

This book is well written, well structured, well organized. The author not only has created a prescriptive, well developed plan for living more by doing less, she also provides free youtube videos, handouts, a discussion guide, and podcasts around her passion of teaching people how to be productive over busy, to embrace a growth mindset, find their purpose/north star, values, rhythms, and grow better at making the choices needed to embrace a life of joy rather than being overwhelmed and exhausted.

The author is positive, engaging, and encourages the reader to not only change her life actions and habits, but to embrace a glass half full, and positive spirit. As well as a growth mindset over a fixed mindset, which holds so much power for humans. We need to know messing up is in our DNA, falling flat on our faces happens way too much, but we can't be stopped in our tracks or frozen in those mishaps, mistakes, faulty logic, whatever, we must keep striving to do better even if it's one tiny baby step forward. And this is something other books have not spelled out so well.

She's a former teacher, now productivity expert. And I'm a teacher and known for being productive. I already share her philosophy, and was aware of her tips, so it's not anything radical for me, and that makes writing a review more challenging and choosing a star rating more difficult. Five stars are a big deal to me-- and I weigh carefully choosing them.

My one disappoint is that this is a Thomas Nelson Book, a division of Harper Collins. I expected it to have some connection to ministry, God, and faith. But it's listed as Self-Help, personal growth, and success. The author uses terms like grace as a christian community would, but there really is no mention of faith or God in growing to be a productive person. But this isn't on the author, I've learned that Thomas Nelson's books can be super faith based, or they can be empowering, clean, well done books that fit in a biblical worldview, but appeal to a much wider audience when that is not emphasized in the actual publication.

But I can say clearly that her methods, organization, and formatting, mixed with real life reasons/experiences, and a arsenal of practical tips, does make this book stand out above and beyond other self help books and productivity books. So I'm marking it as 'amazing' because if I'd read this 20 years ago- it would have been for me- and as I interact with other book launchers, younger than me, or who need help navigating a path, I am sensing their energy, momentum, and joy in following her lead.

The author is down to earth and talks about YOUR goals, dreams, aspirations. She shares hard and fast strategies that if applied, will help you meet your goals. Dare I say this-- she's a motivator and excellent life coach-maybe a better one that Rachel Hollis (who is the author of the last self help/productivity book I've read).

Thankful to partner with Thomas Nelson and read an advanced copy of the book.

I got half way through. I could not finish this. There was nothing new. And the title is a lie. It’s all about productivity. Not the joy of missing out. It seemed like an extended blog post. And she advertises going to her website all the freakin time! I was incredibly frustrated with this book. It was a total let down.

I've been a Tonya Dalton fan for a while, using her individual tips to become more focused on my priorities. Having all those tips along with relatable stories gathered together into a system in this book is awesome.

If you're stuck in busyness or trying to prioritize everything and everyone, this is the book for you.

Be prepared for some deep work and getting real with yourself and your goals. When you're ready to reclaim your time and let go of all the "should do" spend some time with Tonya and The Joy of Missing Out!

The Joy of Missing Out not only helps you to decide what is important to you, but how to schedule your time to get the most important things done.

The book is divided into 4 sections. Each one builds on the others and the further I got into the book, the more the concepts started to click. I love that Tonya doesn’t just tell you what to do, she tells you how to find what is right for YOU, because we each have our own lives and struggles and passions. We have to find our own “yes” and she tells you how to figure out what that looks like to you.

But what makes this more than just a book are all the resources that go along with it. The discussion guide, email companion series, short videos, podcasts, and other downloads make it so that you aren’t just reading a book, you are planning out and taking action steps to make positive changes in your life. I can’t imagine ever being satisfied with just simply reading a book ever again. Every book should come with these kind of resources.

Tonya Dalton gets it- women are overworking, overstressing, and scheduling themselves to the max. While we may praise this”getting it all done” mentality in our society, I see it’s creating a phenomenon where the women doing it all are forgetting about creating a meaningful life where they feel productive AND satisfied. This book gives concrete guidance on how to miss out on things and find joy in the life that you plan with purpose. I cannot wait to implement the strategies in the book to my own life! In the Joy of Missing out, Tonya shares practical advice from her real-life, authentic experiences of what happens when we try to do all the things and find ourselves in a vicious cycle of trying to be everything to everyone in learned helplessness. Her inspirational and relatable teaching style combined with her innate talent for eliminating the clutter in our minds and lives will be sure to transform your life as it did mine. I highly recommend that you joyfully miss out on everything listed in your to-do list... with the exception of reading this book!

Another abandoned book. I’m getting better at this. I only made it to the beginning of the first chapter and decided it isn’t for me. I thought it would be funny ( it isn’t). It’s audience seems to be mothers of young families which I am not. My kids are launched ( thank fuck). The gorge started to rise when she called stay-at-home moms the CEO of the household and talked about the liveWELL method. Barf. (Nothing against stay-at-home mom’s by the way, it’s just that I never was one). It started making me feel depressed and reminded me of my own to-do list. So I stopped.

On a brighter note, we got a puppy. Her name is Danu and she is a three month old chocolate lab. Adorable. My griffon is nine and doesn’t love her. But I think he is coming around. He tried to play with her yesterday and she was so scared she hid under the coffee table. In her defense she is 20 pounds and he is 95 pounds. And he sniffed her butt. Hallelujah! I think all of my spare time is spoken for for the next few months.

The Joy of Missing Out encourages you to live your best life! It’s very relatable and goes way beyond “just another professional development book”. This book is uplifting and provides actionable tasks that allow the reader to create a system that is personalized. I found myself smiling and nodding as I read because this message is one that women really need to embrace! It is so refreshing to read a professional development book FOR women, written BY a woman.

It’s broken into four easy-to-read sections and has a companion discussion guide. There is also an email companion series and access to downloadable content. This book is one that is sure to be read over and over for me as my seasons of life change, and my goals continue to align with my North Star.

Tonya provides several examples of ways to set up a planning system that works for each unique person but really she’s taken things next level beyond simply writing tasks on a to-do list. JOMO focuses on reframing our mindset from overwhelm to “let’s do this!” The Joy of Missing Out shows the reader how to effectively say no to things that don’t spark joy while finding a resounding yes in the things that do! I highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Have you ever felt frustrated that your days seem filled with obligatory activities and events with little to no time left to fulfill the big projects and passions you dream about? If so, The Joy of Missing Out is for you! Productivity expert Tonya Dalton is highly relatable and exceptionally thorough in her step by step approach to 1) identifying your personal priorities and goals, and 2) setting up daily routines and time blocks with intention around those priorities that can help you create a life you love.

I was fortunate to complete Tonya's LiveWELL Method program earlier this year and can truly say it changed the shape of my days, even in the face of obstacles we all encounter. At one time, these setbacks or interruptions might have derailed me and left me feeling defeated and overwhelmed. Tonya's guidance and wisdom gave me the tools needed to get back on course with grace, and I'm happy to say that nine months into the year I have tangible results related to my personal and professional goals.

The Joy of Missing Out is structured in a logical and progressive manner that encourages you to do your personal work along the way. It is not simply a theoretical discussion on productivity. It is truly a blueprint from which you can create a life with greater intention, satisfaction, and joy.

If your daily schedule has you running around in circles, feeling "busy" meeting everyone's needs but your own, The Joy of Missing Out is absolutely for you! Please note that pre-ordering JOMO gives you access to some amazing and valuable bonus materials, so I strongly encourage you to order your copy today!

Clear and practical steps to focus in on your goals rather than making decisions on the fly. She has a well thought out path that anyone can follow and lots of additional resources to bring this book's suggestions to reality. I'll be going back to this one to do all the exercises and a more in-depth reading.

I'm starting to think that perhaps I should stop reading productivity/self-help books. Because they're all starting to sound the same after a while.

If you're very new to the productivity world, if you're a young mom, if you're already a fan of Tonya Dalton and inkWell Press... you'll probably like this. It's not a bad book. Tonya has a certain, gentle way about her that I think will resonate most with young moms trying to figure out how to get their act together. But then, of course, the flip side of that is: if what you really need is a kick in the butt, I don't think this book is going to do it for you.

If you've read any productivity books at all, you don't need this one. It honestly reminds me of a kinder, gentler version of "Girl, Stop Apologizing" (and that was a lot of recycled material, too). Highlights of "JOMO" include:
~Life is short! Embrace the time with your children!
~Find your why (or, as she calls it, your "North Star"); dig deep!
~Daily Download (which is a lot like Rachel Hollis' "Five to Thrive"...it's certainly in the same vein)
~Skip the to-do list, have a "priority list" (which is basically the Eisenhower Matrix)
~Recognize how habits happen and how to change them (cue, action, reward)

Again: if you're new to the world of productivity, and especially if you're a young mom, this will probably be a great book for you. Particularly if you like a kind, gentle approach. It includes a lot of emails and PDFs that you can sign up for that will be helpful if you're just starting out.

But seriously: if you've read Rachel Hollis, skip this one. If you've read Brendon Burchard or The Power of Habit, or anything by Jon Acuff...skip this. It's rehashing and repackaging of material you already know.

I don't normally read this kind if the book - I'm a nonfiction person. But I know the company and when it offered a free copy for pre-release I wasn't going to turn down a free book. I have nerd cred to keep up.

Not in book form, but I do make a professional study of productivity and planning methods. I'm ambitious and if there's a way to work better and smarter count me in. Rather have skills you don't need then lack those you do.

But this book was far more about finding what you're even working to and that made it better. There are a hundred means of going through email faster or finding out what issues do or don't need meetings. If you look up the best way to write a list you'll be crushed under an avalanche.

Not that real advice about those things isn't here to. But they aren't the point. The point is figuring out the (for the moment) end game of all this. All the little tricks in the world mean nothing if you don't actually have some overarching goal it's all directed to. And getting clarity to that point is the point.

So don't look for me to read a great many more books in this category - my science and history won't read themselves - but this is a good one. And a helpful one. And we need more like it.

One small note: it talks about the experience of many women, and for a reason, but facing challenges, overcoming hardship and keeping your eye on your goals and future really applies to anyone. Life pulls punches for no one. If you feel like the whole goal/focus part of your life is fuzzy give it a shot. It will get you nicely on the path to much clearer efforts. Woman or no.

I'm a magician... you know a wife, mom, full-time employee, daughter, friend, school and church volunteer, neighbor, and in charge of morning carpool... just a few things. Not much. Tonya describes me over and over again in her book, The Joy of Missing Out: Live More by Doing Less.

Because of her, I am now a recovering To Do List junkie. Before reading this book the only way I felt like I was truly accomplishing anything was by crossing off a task on my list. I'm one of those people who would add things that I already completed just because it made me feel better about my day. Now I focus on my priorities vs my to dos. Just one of the many game changers I took away.

This book was EXACTLY what I needed at this point in my life. It was real and forced me to look at my week (my 168 hours) differently. Tonya didn't just tell me what I needed to do though, she gave me the tools to work through how to make those changes. Day-by-day I'm implementing her suggestions. JOMO is truly a liberating shift in perspective and I highly recommend it to anyone feeling the pressure (and who isn't).

Even though I received an advance reader’s copy from Nelson Books for an honest review, I purchased a copy as well. Everything shared in this review are my own thoughts.

As I walk deeper through this book, these lyrics from Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero ringing in my head,
"I should not be left to my own devices
They come with prices and vices
I end up in a crisis."
It feels like it resembles a lot to our productivity, most of the time we spend minutes (or even hours?) to mindlessly scrolling through the social media with our devices, whining why people can achieve what they want, instead of focusing on our own goals. Well of course scrolling mindlessly can cost prices and vices, and you'll end up in a crisis (lol!).

The message of this book is very clear as stated in the conclusion, "this book is about productivity, but at its heart, it’s about the choices we make: the hard choices, the easy choices, the everyday choices. Our lives are defined by choices." It's about finding our North Star and deciding our priorities.

This book is very practical as it offers practices for us to try, and one of my favorite quotes from this book, "Nobody in the history of the universe ever accomplished great things by trying to do everything."

Tonya has a way of communicating in a clear, focused voice strategies for organization that actually make life easier, not more crazy. I can't wait to read about her ideas on how to regain focus on things that matter in our lives...family, friends, spending time doing the things we love, etc. Looking forward to going on this journey!

Imagine a day where your life is filled with harmony as you live a life filled with joy. The days of feeling like a circus clown running from spinning plate to spinning plate are long gone. The race against the illusion of finding balance and the feeling of exhaustion and overwhelm are replaced with a life focused on intention and fulfillment. In The Joy of Missing Out Tonya walks you through taking practical steps to move from overwhelm to finding joy and harmony in your life. It starts with focusing on your priorities and aligning your priorities with your purpose. Tonya helps you take the words from the pages of the book and walks you through examples of people living out these strategies and how it has impacted their life. For me, the Joy of Missing out is book about finding freedom, freedom in doing less but finding satisfaction in the richness of living a focused life.

Tonya Dalton has put together a novel full of stories and relatable content while also placing nuggets of gold here and there for us to find. Scratch that. The book is actually pure gold. She knows exactly what we as women experience on a daily basis and tells us there is a better way. A way to find our purpose and be able to give our all to others in the best way possible. When we are stretched thin, we are useless. She does a phenomenal job giving us actionable steps on finding out where we should be spending our time to have the greatest impact. I feel like I have gained a friend after reading this book.

I have loved Tonya's InkWell Press planners for a few years now as well as her Productivity Paradox podcasts and monthly liveWELL FB challenges. Being a recovering perfectionist (or trying to be), I loved the real talk and saw myself in many pages of this book - and the book provides the tools to change my mindset to free myself to live a more joyful life - the one I want - where life isn't controlling me, but I am in control of my life.

Tonya doesn't just talk about it - she truly lives it in her life which shines as an example that if she can do it I can do it! This is a must read for anyone and everyone that has any inkling of wondering how they can make their life better! Step 1 - Read this book!

I received an advanced copy of this book, but my rating and opinion are my own. I felt like this book was written for me. I struggled with feeling like I wasn’t doing enough to be there for others and support others, and it would only hurt my family. This book had so many moments that made me feel the (self imposed) weight lifting off my shoulders. If you have trouble saying no or feel like you can’t ever enjoy anything because you’re always on the go, this book is the perfect answer for you. There is so much Joy in Missing out!

This book is changing the lens I use to view my life. It’s not just a productivity book, it’s a tool for discovery and renewal.
I recently finished another wonderful book where the author spoke in the abstract about the topic. Not Tonya Dalton. She’s speaking directly to me and women like me. The book is an easy read - like a conversation between friends.

I am a fan of Tonya's planners and podcasts and received an advanced copy of this book as part of her launch team. While some may say this is just another productivity book, I disagree. Tonya breaks things like automation of tasks down and made me feel like I could implement change immediately. I think most women can benefit from her approach to quit trying to be everything to everyone and start focusing on what is really important to you. I know I have!
