One wrong decision, and the future will crumble…

Skye Levanthe traded everything she owned in order to secure a place for herself and her son, Veridian, in a scavenging camp.

But all contracts have an expiration date.

Desperate to obtain the resources they need to survive, Skye agreed to navigate the dangerous ruins of fallen cities to search for tradeable materials. When a strange storm forced Skye and her scavenging partner into forbidden territory controlled by The Omni Towers, a ruin collapsed, nearly taking their lives and destroying countless others.

Only one other person survived the ruin collapse: a mysterious young girl named Kayla.

Faced with the decision to save her son or abandon her new foster daughter to a terrible fate, Skye agreed to the only possible course of action—to go into exile and take on the Omni traders in their own den.

No one ever said survival would be easy.

And every choice has consequences.

I loved the Omni Towers series, so it was no surprise that I devoured the prequel of how it all began.

This is the story of Skye, a single mother, trying to make a life for herself and her son outside the towers. When a young girl named Kayla is discovered in a collapsed ruin, Skye must make some very difficult decisions…to give up the girl to her own fate or move on from the life she has worked so hard to build for her and her son. Tensions were already high in the camp where they live so adding another mouth to feed without the ability to work for the group is never going to be accepted. But no child would ever survive on their own.

This the events that lead up to Kayla’s story and reminded just why I enjoyed reading Jamie A. Waters’ storytelling so much. I somehow missed the release of the past few books and now will be adding them to my soon to be reading shelf.

I received this copy of Ruins of Fate from Jamie A. Waters. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't get into the story. The writing lagged too much and I had a hard time being interested in it. This book wasn't for me but maybe others will like it more.

I liked RUINS OF FATE so much that I grabbed myself a copy of book one of the series and then the rest of the series after that.

The Omni Towers series is an established series with RUINS OF FATE giving everyone a glimpse of the character's pasts. I went into ROF with a blank slate having never read the series and I had no trouble getting into the storyline. I enjoyed meeting Skye, Kayla, Leo and Veridian and witnessing the start of their story together.

I enjoyed both the world and learning about the events that made the world what it was. After RUINS OF FATE was over I wanted to know what would happen next for the characters, so I immediately grabbed a copy of BENEATH THE FALLEN CITY. I wasn't disappointing.

Ruins of Fate by Jamie A. Waters is a Prequel to her Omni Towers series and what a great post-apocalyptic
world she creates .
Skye manages to scrape a living as a ruin rat - scavenging old ruins and raising her young son in this scary new world . Having discovered a young girl in one of the ruins she determines to keep her against all advice to the contrary .
Told there are not enough resources to feed her small family she is driven from the camp by the group leader Daryl and the protests of her boyfriend Leo - and must take the risk of moving to a much more dangerous 'family' camp .
Their story of survival against all odds are what makes this such an enjoyable read and sets up the future Omni Towers series very well .

I was given an arc of this book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

This book is a prequel to a (currently) 4-book series, set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future. Our MC faces multiple damn-near impossible choices & situations, trying to keep her family together & alive. It’s harrowing, full of Feels, & honestly a little too cuttingly close for comfort at times. In saying that, I am the type of naval-gazer to chew on things like climate collapse, so YMMV.

Trigger warnings:
Death
Violence
GBH
Food insecurity
Survival insecurity
Homelessness
Near-death situations
Impossible choices
Orphaning
Fostering
Theft
…there are probably others.

Characters of Colour?
Not so much. There’s one secondary character who is kinda brown, but it’s a pretty glaringly white cast.
Given it’s supposed to be at LEAST 150 years since the UV levels spiked, & our snapshot doesn’t include underground habitations, it’s a bit farfetched to assume people would still be mostly white by that point.

GLITTFAB/Queer characters?
None! Sure, relationships are discouraged, but especially to avoid pregnancy I’d have anticipated a LOT more GLITTFAB interactions, if not out & out Queer folx.

Disabled characters?
This is part of what hit me so hard.
Medical resources are slim. Survival is inherently Ableist in this environment, & it’s built into the trading system. If you cannot get in & around to scavenge, you don’t earn the resources to trade for essential supplies.
Even a temporary disability can see you losing your place, taking you from barely scraping by to dying slowly.
As a Disabled person, these kinds of inherently, viciously Ableist societal structures hurt like hell. When paired with the rapidly closing window before we’re facing irreversible climate collapse - part of which includes more pandemics - it’s enough to really make me worry about a future.

Worth my time?
Oh, absolutely. Despite the fear, & the pain, this is a story fundamentally about hope, humanity, & knowing which lines you will not cross. It took me about 2 hours, all told. A satisfying quick read.

Re-read?
This book is the prequel to a series. As such, it’s got a lot of re-read potential… if the rest of the series lives up to the epic that this book is lining up.
By itself? Wooof. I don’t think I would want to put myself through that again.

Recommend?
To fans of post-apocalyptic, dystopian adventures/romances.

I received this book in exchange for my honest views - thanks, BookSiren!

This is the prequel for the Omni Tower series. This series starts off with a post-apocalypse scenario caused by the war two centuries before and a dangerous action scene to set the stage for the remainder of the book.

Life is dangerous, supplies difficult to come by, and Skye had herself and her son to provide for. The only way to obtain supplies was to scavenge for materials or objects in the ruins to barter with at the Omni trading posts. This was dangerous and not always productive work.

The Omni Towers is a self-sustaining facility that housed thousands of people but, only if you were born part of it. The father of her child lived in the Omni Towers. They met when he was running one of the Omni trading posts. He was not aware that she had borne him a son. When she tried to take word to him, she was thrown out as she was just a "ruin rat". She had wanted him to take their son into the Omni Towers in the beginning so that he wouldn't have to eke out a dangerous existence as she was having to.

This book includes romance as she and her scavenging partner, Leo, are in love with each other though forced to hide their true feelings. Their camp leader did not allow for relationships between camp members.

And then, she and Leo, rescue a girl from the ruins near a great chasm when the buildings were collapsing all around them and the adults in her party were killed. This did not endear her to their camp leader who was already unhappy to have one unproductive child in the camp. Now there would be two? Skye would not even consider abandoning Kayla. Skye ends up leaving the established camp and having to go to a "family camp" which was a lot more dangerous and lower on supplies than even her current camp was but, it was the only way to keep Kayla with her. Leo had been gone for a week by that time and most presumed he was dead. He had planned to be gone for two days looking for where Kayla's family had come from.

How does their situation get resolved? Or doesn't it get resolved? This book has many action scenes and provides a significant amount of detail leading up to the series itself. I enjoyed the read and think anyone that likes post-apocalypse books will enjoy this one immensely.

This novella is a prequel to the Omni Towers series (which I haven't read yet). That said, I think it does a good job of introducing this post-apocalyptic world and the struggles that people who live during these times face.

The main character, Skye, is endearing. She lives in a scavenging camp, which is a decent place to be in this world, with her son Veridian and secret-lover (relationships are highly discouraged) Leo. Skye faces a lot of tough choices and harrowing situations throughout this novella and she handles them all with inner strength, determination, and iron-clad morals.

Leo fell a bit flat for me and called Skye 'baby' a few too many times, but his relationship with her and his resolve to keep her and her son safe feels believable.

A novella was the perfect length for this story. Just enough to give the readers a taste of the world without sacrificing an interesting plot and a good pace. There are a few more things about this world that I would've liked more explanation about, but hopefully those things are explained/explored in more detail in the actual series.

One of my biggest issues with this story, aside from the seeming lack of diverse characters, is Wes. He's introduced to us when he approaches Skye in a family camp. His character is spunky and shows promise, and makes a pretty bold move shortly after his introduction. However, something happens with him later that makes his character feel like a waste of space. I think more could have been done with him and that he could have added another layer of conflict and tension to the story.

Something I liked was seeing children in the story without them being the focus. It helped paint a fuller picture of what life is like in this world.

I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys dystopian, sci-fi, or Divergent-esk worlds.

'Ruins of Fate' is a prequel to 'Beneath the Fallen City'. I think there were changes to the story after the blurb was written as the story I read was a little different from the blurb.

Skye Levanthe and her seven year old son Veridian joined a scavenger camp eight years ago. She's one of their top scavengers and has strong intuitions that guide her well. When she's injured during a bad storm and the camp loses precious supplies, her and her son's place in the camp is jeopardized.

Leo is the second in command at the camp and Sky's long time scavenging partner and lover.

Skye and Leo go out on a high risk salvage, in hopes to gain much needed supplies and secure their places but instead almost die when the building collapses around them. Instead of finding what they need, a mysterious voice urges Skye to find and rescue a young girl, Kayla Rath'Varein.

The leader of the camp will not allow Kayla to stay and forces Kayla to choose between the camp or the girl. Kayla won't abandoned the girl and her choices are few as she leaves the scavenger camp, for a dismal family camp.

With the world in ruins, OmniLabs has all the vital things everyone needs but if you don't live in the OmniTower you are out of luck. No one gets into the Towers unless they already live there and they will only trade at the trading camps if scavengers bring them things they desire. The rest of the world struggles to survive in this dystopian world of the haves and the have nots.

I have so many questions about the Tower, OmbiLabs, who Kayla is, who the mysterious voice is, what actually happened to the world and what's going to happen in the future. A tantalizing prequel that gives you just enough to make you thirsty for more.

What is it about?

Ruins of Fate by Jamie A. Waters is a dystopian/post-apocalyptic novel following Skye. Skye was pregnant and abandoned by her lover in an unforgiving world. She was able to buy their way into a scavenging camp where she and her son Veridian spend the next eight years. After a massive storm hits supplies are running low and many are left injured. With their livelihood in jeapardy Skye must protect her family against the harsh realities of this ruined world-and maybe her world will grow just a little.

What did I think?

Ruins of Fate started off un-intriguing, which is ironic considering the massive "action scene" the novel opens with. It just seemed like an average dystopia with a kick-butt female heroine who will later turn out to be more special than anyone thought. The characters all acted so young my initial assessment was that it was also a book about teenagers. It wasn't until Veridian walked onto the pages of the book that I realized the characters were in fact adults. This further threw me off and I could not invest myself in Ruins of Fate-until Kayla came into the picture. Kayla and the events that she sets into motion made this book worth the hours I spent reading it. Kayla gave all of Skye's decisions weight-and finally gave stakes to a forced and overly cheesy romance. I also think that the use of certain characters as cannon fodder was a mistake-and a cheap way of trying to pull emotions from the reader.

Overall I don't totally regret filling my mind with this book-but I probably won't be reading the Omni-Towers series.

Having been completely captivated by another series from this author, I had high hopes that I'd find a similar feel here. Knowing that it was a novella, I wasn't sure whether to expect much in the way of suspense or storytelling... but I was pleasantly surprised that it lacked neither and I was instantly swept away.

It starts with the tension of a quick mission against the backdrop of a raging storm, and continues to keep readers at the edge of their seat with camp politics, (not so) whispered romances and a mother's fierce nature to protect her own. While I'm not usually one for the bleakness that tends reign in dystopian novels, there was enough intrigue and banter here to shift the focus away from anything too terribly depressing (because, let's face it, 2020 doesn't need books for that). While, as a mother myself, I found it tense to have the children so involved in the conflict that Skye dealt with, it was also a refreshing change to see a main character have to deal with such a realistic burden as the survival of her own kids within their harsh world.

As this is pegged as a prequel novella, I don't know if the focus shifts to other characters in the first book, but as a taste for the story, it certainly makes for an interesting start. We were given just enough background the "towers" that intimidate the landscape to make a reader want to know more, and it'll be interesting to see where it all leads from here.

Great short, and oh so sweet, prequel story to the amazing Omni Towers series by Jamie A Waters.

This focuses on Veridain’s mum Skye, and a younger, less grumpy, rather hot Ruin Rat Leo.

They are in a secret relationship and lead a really tough life under the previous Ruin Rat leader. He hates kids and it’s bad enough there is a young Veridain to feed, but we see how they came to be part of an itty bitty Kayla’s life.

You really get to see just how much both Leo and Skye helped Kayla, and can see where her strength of character came from. Not sure she would be who she is now, if she had grown up in the towers.

What’s even more interesting is finding out about who Veridain’s father is. Knowing he could potentially have his own story. Oh there is more to him than meets the eye, especially given who both his parents are. Haha, I’m telling you nothing about that, as you will love discovering it all with fresh eyes and excitement of what could be.

I read out of order so after book 3, and the conclusion of Kayla’s journey, but it was kinda perfect, as I think what we learn is this book, might have major implications in the later books.

This series is one of my absolute favourites. The world building is so wonderful and continues to grow with each book. The writing is addictive and a total page turner. I know I only have 3 books left and I don’t want it to end. I feel I would happily read about these characters and this world forever.

Top marks 5/5 and a huge thank you to Jamie and BookSirens for this copy in return for a non-biased review.

I love a good apocalyptic story. All the what ifs and the it could happens I find fascinating so when I stumbled upon The Omni Towers series by Jamie A. Waters, I thought why not. It was only after I finished Ruins of Fate, I discovered my book BFF had also read the series. When I asked her about it, I was basically told to hurry up and read the series so we could discuss it. Apparently, I was destined to read this series. LOL!

Oh wow, this was good. Not going into great details about the book because what isn’t in the blurb is something each reader needs to discover on their own. Kayla is amazing. The struggles she has endured. Actually, all of the characters and their lives, I can see so clearly becoming a reality. The struggles and choices she had to make were quite moving. I love the connection between her and Leo. Not quite romance, but definitely something deeper.

Ms. Waters has painted a very good picture of possible things to come. If I had one thing I would have wanted more of it would have been the how. How did the world get to this place? What caused the world to deteriorate? So many questions I now have. Hoping the further I get into the Omni towers series I’ll find the answers I am searching for. This is definitely a series worth reading!

I initially encountered Jamie A Waters through a fantasy series she had written, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that her sci-fi stuff was just as good. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Ruins of Fate introduces a wasteland populated by people scavenging artefacts and resources from the ruins of buildings in order to survive in an extremely harsh environment.

The very harshness of their lives makes the characters have to learn to be strong and able to fight to hang on to what is theirs, but the author manages to create human warmth and softness even in the hardest of the badasses in the books.

The people living in the wasteland are not the only survivors, however, with the mysterious Omni Towers looming large in the background of the story. Omni traders buy the artefacts the so-called ruin rats scavenge, and there is immediately a tension between the two groups, with the Omnis looking for unfair advantage and withholding much-needed supplies.

This book is a great example of a "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" story, with a lot of action to move the story on at a fast pace. The reader is immediately drawn into the world and the character stories, with hints of many mysteries ready to be uncovered. As a prequel to main series, Ruins of Fate is a fantastic first dip into a world where life is hard, but human hope and ingenuity win out.

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book from the author. Although this is a prequel to the Omni Towers series, you can read it at any time, or even read it as a stand-alone (although the ending will leave you so intrigued that you will want to read more!) I actually had read all six of the books in this series before reading Ruins of Fate. I loved it! I'm addicted to it! I read this one in one day because I could not put it down.

Without giving away any spoilers, Jamie Waters gives us a glimpse into the past that allows us to see the relationship between Kayla, Veridian and Leo. And then there was Skye, Veridian's mother. I absolutely loved this character. She is a kick-ass heroine who scavenges the ruins, protects those around her and stands up for her beliefs.

This book is not for the weak of heart. There is so much fast paced adventure and action that it will leave you out of breath. A definite must-read if you are a post-apocalyptic fan. Keep in mind that this is NOT Young Adult. Just like the other books in this series, there is a bit of steamy romance... but very well done. Fantastic world-building!

I am currently experiencing a book hangover. After reading this series, I will be looking for more from this author!

**I received a copy of Ruins of Fate from Net Galley and Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinions stated below are mine alone and not solicited in any way**

Ruins of Fate by Jamie A. Waters is a Prequel to her Omni Towers series. Ms. Waters is a new author to me and I have to say that this book really surprised me as I liked it I'll probably get the next book so that I can find out how Kayla and Carl's story plays out.

Skye Levanthe is a ruin rat which means they scavenge old buildings finding items to either trade or sell to the traders who live near the Omni Towers but with a huge rain storm coming they need to move their supplies to higher ground. The leader of the group, Daryl, where she lives asks her to leave when food becomes scarce and Leo her boyfriend (And vice president) balks at the decision to oust Skye and her son Veridian. Which leads to a family camp that's very dangerous but with now two kids in tow she must try to keep them all safe and not become a casualty. There really isn't any explanation of why everyone must wear UV reflecting clothes and scavenge for items to sell for food and medicine so that's my only issue other than that it was a good book.

I received a copy of Ruins of Fate thanks to the publisher through BookSirens for an honest review.

I really enjoy Skye’s story. This is a prequel to the series and a really great hook. I am fascinated to know what the Towers are and what Kayla ‘is’.

All the characters are so wholesome? Not quite sure that’s the right word but there aren’t really any bad characters. It is definitely a human race vs. desolate wasteland rather than against evil social force or person. At least that’s what I got from this book. Could be totally different in the rest of the series, which doesn’t follow Skye.

I would have preferred more worldbuilding info. It is probably in the book 1 but I wish more of it was touched on her. Like what happened to make this the world? Why do they need UV suits? What’s the birth control device that’s mentioned and does everyone have it? It’s a tech world but with no supplies. It’s really interesting and I’d love to know it happened.

Interesting dystopian story. Set in a world of total devastation, the people outside the Towers are left to fend for themselves. They have camps, where every day is a struggle. They have no opinion but to scavenge for supplies and food. They are the discarded, struggling to survive, whilst the people in the Tower live a privileged life. The scavengers risk their lives daily, stealing what they can to survive. The various camps are very competative and the leaders keep a tight reign. Skye has a child from a previous dalliance with a Tower resident and she struggles to keep him safe. The rules of the camps are that everyone has to contribute or risk being kicked out. Skye barely manages to prove herself and then saves another child who she brings to the camp. It's an interesting introduction into this world, descriptive and informative. I'm looking forward to reading how Kayla settles in and what her adventures will be

Book Review
Ruins of Fate by Jamie A. Waters
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Having not read any of the Omni Towers series before, I was going into this prequel without knowing the story.

Jamie does a great job and drops the reader right off the start with showing the dedication that Skye has for the lives of others. The courage that Skye has to not only raise her own son, but also take in an orphaned little girl, in a time where too is minimal, is amazing.

The story takes you into the future where a scavengers camp is in the middle of a big storm and through the aftermath. You watch Leo and Skye decide to take a big risk in hopes of it paying off for the better of the whole group.

I felt pulled into the story and routing for Skye and Leo and wanting them to succeed. I was interested in not only the characters but in the description of the outside world as well.

This was a pretty good dystopian story. The main character Skye has a son that she protects fiercely. She also has a romantic interest in Leo, the second in command. They are scavengers trying to live in a desolate world. Having a son in the scavengers is not usually done, but Skye's buy in and her work ethic has helped keep them in the group. When the catastrophic storm hits and injures Skye's hand, causes many of the other scavengers to be injured as well as ruining the supplies, the leader is ready to force her out of his group. This is their story. I enjoyed the characters and thought that it was a very good story line. It gives you a lot of details, but there are things that you want to know still. I am eager to read the next installment in the book.

I had already the book: Beneath the Fallen Towers and had really enjoyed the story about Kayla scavenging to survive. So when I was offered a free book telling Kayla's back story I jumped at the chance to review it.
Ruins of Fate is the story of Sky and her young son's fight to survive in a ruined apocalyptic world. The characters are likeable and the vivid ruined world descriptions are frightening.... during a scavenging raid that goes wrong Sky is summoned by an inner voice to find and save the infant Kayla. The story then unfolds how Sky battles to keep her new family as a unit and how they overcome adversity.
I enjoyed both books this has the makings of a good series. I would urge people to read them in the correct order, but each book is good as a stand alone unit.

I received this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. I know it is a prequel for an existing series but I was informed that reading this book prior to beginning the series is beneficial. I really like how well developed the characters are. It was a well paced story and I found it didn't lag at all. I found I was becoming more and more curious as to what kinds of powers Skye has. Sky is the main person in this book. She has one child named Viridon. While she is out scavenging with her partner Leo she finds another child - Kayla. She adopts Kayla into her small family, which causes problems with her scavenging camp. Kayla has unknown powers as well and is the focal point of the series moving forward. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

It was my first attempt at a novel from Jamie Waters, who is in this story describes a Dystopian world in which humankind is left to foraging in ruins to survive beside an untouched area on which the Omni Towers are built.
The novel covers the adventures of Leo, Skye and her son Veridian main characters of a group of scavengers who day by day are forced to take increasing risks to find goods and artefacts of the former prosperous world to trade, their only way to assure subsistence and survival.
The novel is well written with a oppressive catching atmosphere, it is pleasant to read and I am eager to delve into next volume.

The story had me from the first page. I was drawn into Skye's world and wanted to fight beside her to help them make a life for themselves.

Living in ruins their only chance at survival is scavenging. As supplies dwindle hard decisions need to be made. The scary part is, how far do you let yourself fall when you come across hard situations? I was emboldened by how Skye and Leo hold to what is right and fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

Story is a prequel for the rest of the series. Sets up the world well and gives a hint that there is something out there under the ruins.

When I read the first book in the series, Beneath the Fallen City, I was instantly hooked, and couldn't put it down. I've become kind of addicted to the series, I think about it all the time, and I'm always wondering what will happen in the second book, even though I haven't gotten a chance to read it yet. Luckily, this prequel came along, and I finally satisfied my craving for this series.

Ruins of Fate is a prequel to her Omni Tower series. The author does an excellent job of creating a desolate post-apocalyptic world inhabited by traders (those of the Towers) and ruin rats (those forced to scrape a meager living by scouring the abandoned ruins for things to trade). This is the story of Skye and her son Veridian.

I loved this story. I thought it was very well done, flowed nicely and had great character development. I am definitely going to start in on the Towers next.

This was a different story and I enjoyed it greatly. I read it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. The environment was well written to show the danger of the times. The story flowed well and kept you interested from start to finish. I have not been disappointed in any of the story’s I have read by Jamie Waters. I am looking forward to the next story because I need to know what happens with the little girl they found.

In this vision of the future, there are two types of people - those who live in the OmniLab towers and those who live in the ruins or family camps. In order to survive, those who live in the ruins have to scavenge relics which is anything shiny. The folks in the towers don't need electronics or metals. In return, ruin rats as they are called by tower folk can trade the relics they scavenge for medical supplies, food, and other necessities. This is an eerie look at a possible future that ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

Ruins of Fate (The Omni Towers, Prequel) by Jamie A. Waters is a wonderful story that I have read. This is the prequel to start this brand new series that I fell in love with. I love reading this action, adventure romance with general fantasy thrown in and I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves all of this in their stories.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
