Capturing a Unicorn

Rate this book
Will he betray or save the world’s only unicorn?
A novelist and journalistic investigator, Oliver is on a mission to expose the secrets of a clinic that dared to perform illegal experiments on humans. Against all laws and morals, there are doctors making monsters, and it has to stop. Humanity itself is at stake, which is why he must destroy the knowledge of their creation and eliminate any living threats.
Then Oliver meets Emma, a former patient, living within the ruins of the clinic. She’s sweet and gentle, pretty, too—despite the horn projecting from her forehead.
It seems Oliver has found one of the monsters, and she’s like nothing he imagined. Will he go through with his plan to eradicate those changed by Chimera’s secret, or save Emma for love?

A fitting end!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 🤓☹️😙🥰
Narrator: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Emma - she considers the destroyed Chimaeran clinic in the Rocky Mountains as her home, so she returns there, where she was comfortable. She knows she can’t go into society as she is the only living unicorn. She has a horn coming out of her head resulting from the experiments Dr. Chimera performed on her which saved her life from the breast cancer that was ravaging her body. She was grateful to the doctor for saving her life.

The Hero: Oliver - an investigative journalist and novelist that is set to expose the new pharma company that has taken over for the Chimaeran clinics in experimenting on human genetics and creating monsters. He wants it all to stop and is determined to remove the monsters from existence. He was hired by the company to show things in a good light but that isn’t what he has planned.

The Story: Emma never wanted to leave the clinic, she was safe there, had a place to live, three meals a day and she was happy. She came from an abusive background, had abusive boyfriends, and she was saved from all that by Dr. Chimera, so when she was drugged and evacuated on a helicopter on the night the clinic was invaded, she was afraid. Especially as there were other patients on the helicopter who weren’t as nice as her, guards and Dr. Sphinx was there. Emma found out that the Doctor had been raping her when she was unconscious right before the helicopter crashed, killing him and some of the others.

Oliver is determined to find the truth about the Chimaeran clinic and goes to the destroyed clinic in the Rockies to find out if there is anything left. After trekking up to the site of the clinic, Oliver sees a girl in the woods with a horn.

Like the rest of the books in this series, this one was told in multiple points of view via solo narration. Narrated by Troy Duran, who is one of my favorites. He has a deep and sexy voice and is terrific at doing different voices for different characters. He did a fantastic job with this entire series and I didn’t even care that it was solo narration.

Capturing a Unicorn by Eve Langlais

5th and final book in the Chimera Secrets series. Paranormal romance. Best read as part of the series.
Oliver is at the destroyed institution hoping to take photos so the world will know what the mad scientists created. Proof should still exist. Emma has gone back to the institute after the helicopter crash because she always felt safe there. She knows the horn on her head is not normal, but it doesn’t matter. As far as she’s concerned, the doctors there saved her life.

Two twists near the end that I didn’t see coming.
Entertaining and satisfying. A great series wrap up.

I listened to the audio version that is narrated by Troy Duran And alternated with a paperback copy. Troy did a fantastic job making Emma and Oliver unique with all the other characters having minor differences including the children.

This book is all about the continuing back story from the previous four books, with the slow burn romance of Oliver and Emma in this one, running throughout. Steamy in parts, but mostly full of action as the remaining ex-patients from the Chimera lab try to find a way to exist in secret. A great finish to the series (or is it?). 4.5 stars. 😍

This book was ok. The characters were tame (no pun intended), but book tied the pieces (previous stories) together. There was an ending, but it was left with the possibility of continuing.

Really didn’t enjoy this one all that much. Oliver is a prat from the get go and I really struggled with him as a hero and character. Emma is great and I really enjoyed her character but I felt Oliver’s redemption was rushed and I’m still kind of holding a grudge over his behaviour. Just scraped 3 stars for me. Nice ending though.

Perhaps this series would have been better wrapped up with the previous book. After all, once you've written the story about the central character, what's the point of continuing? And too, the purpose for this one feels more like a way of tying up loose ends, but it's done haphazardly.

The H... I kept picturing the reporter in Tim Burton's Batman (not Vickie Vale; the other one). He spends the first half of the book being an arse because mutants. We see a turnaround, but I'm not sure I believe it really.

The h... eh.

The background noise AKA the overarching plot is a conclusion on the whole "who's hunting them?" bit. Sortof. Because the people hunting them in the previous books aren't the ones hunting them now, but instead they're the H's mom's goons. Because of course. And of course, what better way to underscore that arsehole's initial attitude is wrong than to have mommy dearest give him the same treatment?

The real issue I had with this series in general is that it was all released over the course of a year or so, which means all the books were written entirely too close together for plot inconsistencies to occur. Book one had the H becoming a dick and getting locked away because he realized he had no freedom. Book two had the ones who went feral being hidden in a cage in a secret lab (even the secret lab has secret labs) and being "iced" if they went truly feral. Book 3 had the h with complete freedom to be a mercenary even though she's one of the experiments, and the ferals locked in cages on the level the H in book one was in, Book 4 was the outlier in that at the end of book 3, the lab was blown up so it took place at a house in the woods. Book five indicated that well, only the upper levels of the lab blew, and that a lot were left behind, locked in their cages to die. Strangely enough, that was never addressed after the H/h were collected and taken to that relic of a hotel the gang was hiding in.

And of course there's the bit where we have everyone being injected with all sorts of "natural" DNA, which explains one with wolf characteristics, one with lion characteristics, and one hyena. One could even sort of explain a mermaid - fish exist after all. But how do you get a phoenix? How do you get a unicorn? Demon/vampire/something or other? You kinda need an explanation there; things like that don't just appear out of nowhere.

And IS it over? It says "the end" at the end, but the tied ends are rather loose.

3.5/5 - Emma x Oliver.

5 stars for the OG gang. This couple wasn't very exciting, they were angsty.

Emma is a unicorn-woman. A woman with aggressive tendencies and a horn. She was a product of a bad relationship after a bad relationship. Abuse both physical and mental. She was dying of breast cancer when Chimera found her. She's the only patient that is grateful for Chimera’s intervention.

Oliver is a reporter looking to write a book about the Chimera Clinic. Oliver is mostly a dick throughout the book. He calls Emma a monster along with all of the rest of the gang once they all meet up.

The adhesion beat of this book gave me whiplash. It came out of nowhere and didn't seem genuine. Just Emma giving up her self-worth when Oliver all of a sudden decided he was in love with her, or lust. They had sex but it lacked intimacy. It was more like Emma reenacting the motions she had performed with the assholes of her previous relationships.

The plot twist didn't really make sense. Oliver's mother?

This last book just felt rushed. It’s interesting parts were the OG cast’s subplot?? The nice bow at the end left a possibility to continue but not really. It was like there’s still a threat but we are going to live happily ever after and share the mutant healing genes with the world. Umm, ok?

Emma and Oliver were more a like plot device than a viable ship end the end.

Well, that was certainly not what I expected to wrap up the series, but it was perfect! I really liked how Oliver changed his mind about some things, but not others. His treatment of others was his greatest achievement, and that made his character all the more likeable. Emma also had some growth to achieve, as she learned to let old habits fall aside and see things as they really are in her world. The banding together and comradery that has been growing in the series came to full fruition here, and it was wonderful!

Unicorn Love

In this last - I think - Chimera book, after the helicopter crash, journalist Oliver hunts down evil monsters only to find a sweet unicorn named emma.
But it isn't long til Cholera sends Jett to find lost patients reaching Emma and taking Oliver captive.
Shifters him the chance to get to know the group and make his own decisions.
I loved this whole series, and if intends here gorgeous be a really good ending, though I goodbye series continues .

Oliver begins with the perception that all persons who are made different are monsters, but meeting Emma makes him reconsider. What is a monster? Someone is different or someone who is destructive? How different? Intentionally or unintentionally destructive? Beautiful or not beautiful? The contrast between Emma and Oliver's mother might give him a different point of view.

Although book this was the longest storyline in this series, still felt rushed in the end. Not to mention, leaving too many huge cliffhangers...giving us more questions than answers🤷‍♀️ Someone mentioned, this is the last book in this series ...how can it be????

Fallen Hard!!!

Emma Kylie Baker, a former patient of Adrian Chimera ( A CHIMERA'S REVENGE ) and his cronies. Now she was something else, she had a horn and she could turn into a horse. She found out that one of the doctors hurt her and other patients, her inner animal took care of him. After an accident she found herself living within the ruins of the clinic. Then one day she met the most handsome man she'd ever seen...Oliver.

Oliver Marshall, a novelist and journalist investigator was on a mission to expose the Chimer clinic. The doctors and scientists were doing illegal experiments on humans. They had to be stopped, no matter what. He was hired by the very people he was trying to expose. He just never expected to find what he did when he reached his destination.

Emma was ready to make Oliver go away by destroying his belongings but she changed her mind when she saw what was on his camera. She saved his life countless times despite how he viewed her and the others that tried Dr. Chimera helped. There was something about him that drew her in and the sentiment was mutual.

Just as they were getting somethings off their hearts, some people showed up and too them to a secured place. Turned out it was Luke, Jett, Jane, Jayda and the rest of gang who'd been looking for survivors after their last location was compromised. Despite what Adrian said everyone wasn't happy with the doctor keeping him alive.

Emma was conflicted, but over time she and the others saw a side of Oliver that they never expected. Same could be said about the different way he looked at them too. Both side saw that they had a lot more in common than they thought.

Oliver and Emma gave into the attraction they felt for one another and then all hell broke loose. Someone from his past came after the woman and the people he started to care for. With help from those that weren't captured, they took down the bad guys.

CAPTURING A UNICORN is the fifth book in Eve Langlais' CHIMERA SECRETS series. What an amazing ride. I loved this series very much, it was different and unique. An exceptional job by Eve Langlais. 5 Golden Stars!

P. S. Looking forward to the next generation in a distant future! ;)

Bad ass!

This story was a seriously awesome end to this series! There were some major curveballs thrown, help from unexpected sources, and some seriously steamy scenes too. Emma... yeah. Emma got the short straw most of her life, and the hits kept coming all through the story. And Oliver was unexpected. His attitude at the start of the story and at the end are practically two different people, but in a really good way.

And that tease at the end! Gah! I love this author!!!
